MMLSC Maria Margarette L. S. Concepcion April 30, 2013 Art 333: Photobook
Artist Write Up 2 – Bonnie Rychlak Bonnie Rychlak gave an artist talk on the 3rd of April on the third floor of the library at 4:45 – 5:45 pm. Rychlak is an artist, sculpture, lecturer, art consultant, and a curator. Rychlak is a former curator from New York City. She has curated exhibitions herself locally and internationally. Rychlak is currently curating an exhibition for contemporary artists. Rychlak has spent many years as the chief curator for the Yamaguchi Museum. She was also his personal assistant for 8 years before Yamaguchi passed away. During Rychlak’s presentation, she decided to talk about her the work that she has created as an artist. Rychlak started discussing the present art work that she created such as the Series of Trains. She had described them as “quirky objects” made from wax and how the material evaporates and goes metaphorically down the drain. After the severe storm Sandy, the intentionality of the piece had changed. Over the years, Rychlak had created artwork in several different mediums such as photography and sculpture. Rychlak had mentioned she had been the personal assistant of Yamaguchi. It seems that the skills that she had learned during that period Rychlak was able to become enthusiastic and curate her own work. I remember this was how I felt when I took a Curatorial Theory and Practice class during the Spring 2011 Semester at St. Mary’s. In that class, my professor Jayme McLellan taught us the art behind curating a work of art and in order to actually understand the theories, the thoughts of the curator, and the process of installing our own art, we were able to organize our own mini art exhibition.
