MMLSC Maria Margarette L. S. Concepcion Art 333: PBC April 24, 2013

Artist Post 1 – SMP Show 1 (Michael, Chance, Amanda) The artist even that I attended was the first show of St. Mary’s Project (SMP) Studio Art Presentations on the 17th of April at 4:45 – 6PM at the Boyden Gallery. The SMP presentation is where art students present their yearlong art projects. I was excited to see what my fellow classmates had to say about the artwork that they created during their senior year. I also had the option to create my own SMP but I opted out and decided to take upper level art classes to become more familiar with other mediums such as Photography. There were three presentations following a questions and answer portion. The first person to present was Michael Bargamian. Michael was mostly interested in how the artist’s hand is evident in his/her work of art. His artwork gives viewers a chance to react to his pieces for example the single sentence project for Lisa Scheer’s Sculpture class. The viewer’s experience depends on how he/she would react to the sentence. Chance Hazelton artwork was more on not showing the artist’s hand. Chance took “familiar” landscapes and transformed them into unfamiliar images by removing the color. It was interesting how Chance talked about the process of how she installed her work in the gallery. She created two large paintings by projecting her images on to the gallery walls. And Chance’s final piece itself was a projection. Amanda Schmeltz was the last presenter. She talked about how her experience with religion influenced her to create the artwork in the gallery. Amanda had made some interesting connections with her Christian religion and art. She said, “The reason why she chose circles was because with Christianity she felt complete. Circles are start and one point and end at the same spot.” Through her artwork Amanda, wanted to convey the feeling of interconnectedness and

MMLSC being in the presence of something greater. Amanda had hoped her viewers would feel “comfort” and “awe.” Once the presentations were over, I was very proud of all three of my friends! They did such a wonderful job. I know they were very nervous throughout their presentation but that did not hinder their ability to vocally explain what how they got there. I’ve been familiar with each of their artwork but it was definitely interesting how their process changed and developed over the course of the year. They all found creative ways of representing their individual perspectives.
