THE BOOM IS BACK
s we close the door to one riding season – an incredible one at that, the door to the offroad season is swinging open like never before. While the sport has previously experienced rapid growth during the 1990s when the ATV came of age and the boot squashing effects of the Consumer Products Safety Commission’s (CPSC) Consent Decree wore off, this is a different kind of growth.
The sport is now considered mature, with vehicles that are light years ahead of those simple ATVs from nearly three decades ago. We now have improved infrastructure in place, more clubs, more associations, more trails, more destinations, and more manufacturers. Unlike the 90s, when recreational ATV riders were often viewed as a nuisance, businesses and communities have learned how to embrace and profit from riders. Destinations like the Black Hills of South Dakota, which is featured in this issue, have exploded in popularity as riders flock to these areas where they feel welcome, and the trails roll on seemingly forever. Most importantly, we now have more riders. With better vehicles, more places to use them, and the unexpected pandemic benefit of new riders entering the sport over the past two years, the off-road boom is back and better than ever. In this issue we feature some of the best OHV riding destinations in the Midwest. Places that welcome riders with open arms and beaming smiles. Where tavern and restaurant parking lots are packed with ATVs and side-by-sides, and you’ll find a boot scraper at the door and tables and bar stools filled with riding enthusiasts just like you inside. Hopefully, we’ll see you there.

Nissan Teaming With Snowmobile Manufacturer to Make NASA’s Next Lunar Vehicle Jake Lingeman, (Reprint from Newsweek.com posted 4/7/22) NEWSWEEK.COM
Nissan won’t let General Motors be the only automaker in space. On Thursday at the 37th Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, veteran space company Teledyne Brown Engineering said that it will partner with Nissan, Sierra Space and others to create the next crewed Lunar Terrain Vehicle. “Teledyne Brown Engineering built the first lunar rover prototype for Dr. Wernher von Braun in the 1960s and we have subsequently supported almost every major U.S. human rated space mission,” stated Reggie Spivey, Vice President of the company’s Space Systems Group in a press release. “We are proud to continue our extensive presence in space and are excited at the possibility of transporting the first woman and person of color on the surface of the moon.” Teledyne has more than 70 years of experience in the space industry. It recently designed, built, and delivered the first of three Launch Vehicle Stage Adapters of NASA’s Artemis Vehicle. The initial launch is scheduled for early this summer. Teledyne is considered a Prime Contractor for NASA and has sent payloads to and from the International Space Station in the past. Nissan North America will bring its expertise to the equation with decades of design and innovation, including experience in space. It will also infuse its autonomous driving knowledge and intelligent vehicle systems into the rover. And since there’s no air on the moon, it will be an electric vehicle. “Nissan was the obvious choice for our team due to its previous work with NASA on autonomous mobility at AMES Research Center, vast capacity and experience with electric vehicles,” Spivey told Newsweek. “It’s passion for space exploration is unmatched and evident in our discussions and preliminary designs.” The automaker gets to expand its engineering capability, with the goal of bringing some of that tech to its land vehicles. “Participation in this project allows for the extension of our industry’s technology and design capabilities to space technology, and vice versa,” said Maarten Sierhuis, Alliance Global Director of Nissan’s Alliance Innovation Laboratory in Silicon Valley, California in a press release. Sierra Space, which has been in the industry for more than 30 years, will produce the flight 10 Midwest Rider 2022
software, navigation, communications, pointing and timing for the lunar vehicle. The company is currently finishing up its Dream Chaser, the only winged commercial spaceplane. That craft will start cargo supply and return missions for NASA next year. A less surprising partner is Textron Specialized Vehicles. That company builds Arctic Cat snowmobiles, ATVs and E-Z-GO golf cars, among other things (Aviation). The company will bring its creative chassis design, vehicle dynamics and suspension and handling expertise to the team. “We feel that we have created a dynamic, cutting edge and proven team for this effort,” stated Scott Hall, President of Teledyne Brown Engineering in a release. “Together this team will deliver a rugged, versatile and intuitive vehicle to support our future in space.” WITH THIS PARTNERSHIP, WE WILL EXPLORE POSSIBILITIES OF AUTONOMY AND TELEOPERATIONS, POWER MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS, VEHICLE CONNECTIVITY, AND HUMAN-MACHINE INTERFACE TO HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF INTELLIGENT LUNAR ROVERS. WE THEN WILL TRANSLATE THESE LEARNINGS FROM THE LTV OPERATING ON THE LUNAR SURFACE BACK TO EARTH.”

FULL CIRCLE
WITH LEVI LAVALLEE
REDBULL.COM
Minnesota snowmobile legend, Levi LaVallee, embarked on a mission to accomplish a lifelong dream of riding an inverted loop on a snowmobile - a feat only ever previously conquered by a few Polaris Thrill Team riders before him.
There are some great videos documenting LaVallee’s Full Circle project on the Red Bull website all aimed to revisit the history of snowmobiling at the birthplace of the sport in Québec City, Canada which challenged LaVallee’s skills on a custom course built on one of the country’s oldest military bases, La Citadelle. The freestyle snowmobile icon has had a decorated career and accomplished many unique projects in his lifetime, but there has always been one elusive item on his bucket list, the loop. The inspiration comes from The Polaris Thrill Team, who completed the world’s first loop on a snowmobile in 1969. In Full Circle, LaVallee brings this idea to Quebec and pushes himself to new limits by taking on an ambitious course culminating in a 30ft (9.14m) loop. With that goal in mind, hours of research and development went into making the course and building a loop feature fit for a snowmobile. Snow park and design creation company Today’s Park partnered with LaVallee to serve as lead engineers on the project. One of the biggest challenges was developing a design to bring such a large feature into the location. Clocking up high speeds on a snowmobile, Levi had to negotiate the twists and turns of the course built on La Citadelle with just inches between the edges of steep hills and drops. The course, over a kilometer in length, includes step ups, banks and jumps offering a freestyle paradise for the professional snowmobiler. 16 Midwest Rider 2022
“This is the bucket-list feature I have yet to do. In 2004, Polaris had their 50th anniversary and I saw the loop for the first time thinking that’s something I could do. The amount of preparation for this project is insane. There are all these little things that if you do them wrong, it turns into a big disaster. I think about how incredible it is that my snowmobile brought me here. This is where snowmobiling started, here in Québec, it’s a true honor to get this opportunity.” – Levi LaVallee

SHOP SOLUTIONS - THE GREEN HINGE SYSTEM GREENHINGESYSTEM.COM
We finally found a solution to eliminate rattling garage doors and the never-ending chase to properly adjust them to combat windy days.
N
o longer will you have cold or hot air and their associated elements blowing through the cracks and into your shop. The solution was painless to install and very reasonably priced. The Green Hinge System is based in Wisconsin and was engineered for varying height doors and widths, and when installed, the spring loaded hinges apply pressure to the track and rollers, pushing the door tight to the frame and seals. This not only keeps the elements out, but your door will stop rattling and open much smoother. An added bonus is the savings on your energy bill if you heat or cool your shop. Installation was quick and foolproof if you can read directions and are able to wield basic hand/power tools. This was a huge seller for us, because our arch nemesis in life are garage doors…we swear they are made with equal parts rocket appliance and voodoo magic. We ordered directly from the Green Hinge website and shipping was quick, and product well packaged with simple directions.

WILD BILL, WILDLIFE AND WIDE-EYED MEMORIES, THE BLACK HILLS OF SOUTH DAKOTA HAS IT ALL.
D
on’t look now, but suddenly the Midwest has become an offroad riding mecca and leading the charge is an iconic family vacation destination – the Black Hills of South Dakota. Home to Mount Rushmore, the Wonderland Cave, and the Mammoth Dig to name just a few, the reasons to visit the Black Hills for families across the United States, and specifically the Midwest are many. Family friendly, a short day’s drive, rich in history, stunning beauty, and home to some of the most well-known roadside attractions, monuments, and legendary towns anywhere. What’s more, the Black Hills has become one of the most OHV friendly destinations anywhere. Just about every family in the Midwest has visited the Black Hills. For many, it remains a vivid and favorite childhood memory. It was and remains a place to camp, to see our country’s history carved in stone, watch a herd of wild buffalo, and learn about storied outlaws in the historic town of Deadwood. More than just a series of roadside attractions, perhaps the most memorable component to the Black Hills is its rugged beauty. Rising from the prairie almost magically, the hills, which aren’t actually black but only appeared that way from a distance to early explorers, features majestic Ponderosa Pines, jagged rock outcroppings and an abundance of forest roads and trails that crisscross the 8,426 square miles that make up the area. It’s these trails and accompanying scenic roadways that have turned the Black Hills into one of the most popular OHV riding destinations anywhere. More than just great trails, what sets the Black Hills apart is how open they are to OHV traffic. You can ride just about everywhere, and that includes right down main street of towns like Hill City,
20 Midwest Rider 2022
The Black Hills has more than 3,600 miles of roads and trails open to OHV travel. Of those, over 650 miles are designated for all types of OHV vehicles. Custer, and Hot Springs or directly into the visitor’s center parking lot of Mount Rushmore. Then when it’s time to leave, simply hit the highway, find the first dirt trail (often appearing in less than a mile) and disappear back into the hills. The past several years, we’ve visited the area in the late fall, after the tourist season has subsided and the hills come alive with a burst of color. Given the access that the communities in the area have allowed, you can easily stay at a hotel and ride right from the parking lot or choose from countless campgrounds nestled in the hills and end your ride with good conversation and a cold brew over a campfire. According to the Black Hills and Badlands Tourism Association, the Black Hills has more than 3,600 miles of roads and trails open to OHV travel (most allowing vehicles 62-inches or less in width). Of those, over 650 miles are designated for all types of OHV vehicles. Aside from having a vast trail network, the Black Hills gives you the ability to choose different types of riding adventures. One day, you may want to keep things tight and slow, and explore the
narrowest and steepest areas. The next day you can mix it up and hit the popular tourist attractions. On our most recent visit, we took a break from the dirt and ran the incredibly beautiful Spearfish Canyon Road into the town of Spearfish. After a satisfying lunch at a local restaurant, we charted a different path back to our campsite that included a little of everything, from paved road, gravel, and two-track trail. This kind of variety and possibility of easy running makes the hills a great place to bring the family or newer riders.
With easy to navigate trails at your disposal and the ability to visit the most popular destinations and towns, the Black Hills is a perfect riding destination for families.
We chose the Mystic Hills Hideaway as our campground on our most recent visit. They offer campsites and cabins and feature a full-service bar and restaurant on-site. You can also rent a sideby-side from them. From here you can make Custer Peak, one of the most prominent mountains in the hills one of your first riding destinations.
Before You Go Like any new riding destination, knowing the rules and obtaining the proper registration before you get there will make the trip that much more enjoyable once you arrive. For starters, permits are required and can be purchased online at blackhillsbadlands. com/permits. You can choose either a 7-day pass for $20 or an annual pass for $25. You can also purchase these permits at various visitor centers and campgrounds. We were able to purchase ours when we checked in to pay for our RV site. Also, if you plan to travel into Wyoming, you will need to purchase a separate permit as there is no reciprocity for out-of-state registrations.
Once you set your adventure spirit free, you’ll find many offthe-beaten-path destinations including this popular watering hole located in the hidden community of Rochford.
The rules and regulations for riding the Black Hills are, much like the attitude of the community, not cumbersome. They include: • On-the-road drivers need a licensed OHV, must be 14 years of age or older and possess a valid driver’s license. • ATV/UTV use is strictly prohibited on the interstate highway system at all times. • Eye protection is required for ATV/UTV operators on all public roads unless a windshield is in place. • Helmets are advised for all ATV/UTV operators and riders on all roads. Helmets are required by law for anyone under 18. • Operators on roads must be able to provide registration and proof of insurance. There is no minimum age or license requirement for off-road drivers on trails. However, as always, use common sense and keep it safe. • Lastly, cross country travel in the forest is prohibited.
Settled in and ready to ride at our new home for the week at Mystic Hills Hideaway (mystichillshideaway.com). May/June 2022 21

While not a rule, we would also recommend equipping your side-by-side with a turn signal kit. Easy to install, they provide additional safety while sharing the road motor vehicles, 3 especially on busy highways or 2 within communities.

REDESIGNED AND READY
SPORTSMAN 450HO -NEW LOOK AND REFINED CAPABILITY HAVE US BELIEVING THIS IS ALL THE SPORTSMAN YOU’LL EVER NEED.
W
hen we first learned the Polaris Sportsman 450 and 570 had undergone a major transformation for model year 2021, it was the first time in a long time we yearned to throw a leg over an ATV. With the ever-increasing number of options afforded to us in the side-by-side space, the ATV, regardless of brand, had become somewhat of an afterthought. But the new look Sportsman with newfound capability, greater strength, and more intuitive operation had us eager to get behind a pair of handlebars once again and rediscover the benefits that only an ATV can deliver.
mocked and then mimicked. During the 90s it seemed every trail riding, hunting, fishing, acreage owning garage in America had a Sportsman in it.
For a refresher to those who might be new to the OHV space, the Sportsman in many ways singlehandedly transformed the OHV landscape. It revolutionized how an ATV performed and was operated with a long string of industry firsts that were first
Aside from a freshened up angular styling, new headlight (available in LED) and gauge package, many of the improvements to the updated Sportsman go beyond the skin. It starts with increased
24 Midwest Rider 2022
Our love for the ATV was immediately rekindled after spending the better part of last fall with a 2021 Sportsman 450 HO with Electronic Power Steering (EPS). Considered just one-step away from the entry point for the full-size Sportsman line, both the new platform 450 and 570 received a dramatic make-over, and for 2022 is available in 10 different variants including a Utility focused model and a hunt edition.
towing that has been bumped to 1,350-pounds (up from 1,225-pounds) and ground clearance that now measures 11.5-inches. Both bolstered numbers are tops in their class. You’ll also find a more powerful battery that produces 78% more cold-cranking amps, something many of us in the upper Midwest can appreciate
in the dead of winter. The added boost ensures the Sportsman will start, even after sitting on the icepack after a long day or night of fishing. What’s more, the battery has been relocated to under the front rack for easy access (Sportsman owners of previous models will remember the mud caked location of old), and for ease of charging, a port has been located on the
pod, so you easily attach a trickle charger for extended storage periods. Where the rubber meets the terrain has also been improved with larger 6-ply, 25-inch tires. While some other brands will flaunt bigger tires as part of an upgraded package, they come standard on Sportsman. Stronger is a common theme with the redesigned Sportsman, as you’ll find small improvements across the platform. One area that caught our attention as we were hauling materials back to a food plot were the racks. Not only are they stronger, but they also include steel extenders standard, allowing you to stack and secure a load while also providing multiple tiedown points more easily. It’s this level of attention to
detail that we really noticed the more we used and became comfortable with the Sportsman. While you won’t see other improvements, you’ll likely feel them. Things like improved engine braking and smoother clutching are evident with the improved, lurch-free drive away and controlled downhill descent you’ll experience. Other ease of use items that you’ll potentially find later during your ownership
For 2022, the Sportsman 570 is available in Utility HD trim featuring a switched power port at the rear, making it easy for you to operate attachments from the saddle.
Starting at just $6,999, the Sportsman 450 HO reminds us of simpler times, when balanced performance, capability, and ease of use propelled Sportsman to the top of the ATV heap.

REDESIGNED AND READY experience are the prewired winch hook up and pre-wired hand and thumb warmer upgrades, making it easy for you to add many of the accessories Polaris has available for the revamped Sportsman. But despite this long list of improvements, our biggest takeaway after enjoying the Sportsman 450 HO for the several months was it’s so much more than an “entry” level ATV. The Sportsman is quiet, smooth, and with available Electronic Power Steering, incredibly easy to
drive, even in nasty terrain where negative handlebar feedback can be an issue. The power, performance, and comfort of the Sportsman 450 HO come together for a perfectly balanced vehicle, all at price (starting at just $6,999) that continues to set the benchmark when it comes to value. While there certainly are ATVs with more power, more flashy features, and more performance infused suspension components, the Sportsman is still all the ATV you’ll ever need…maybe more.
While the stark styling of the redesigned base model is begging for an aftermarket bumper (maybe that was their plan) you’ll soon forget about the vanilla styling when you experience the smooth power and revised clutching of the updated Sportsman 450 and 570. About the only true nag we could voice was the lack of saddle storage. While this can be rectified with an accessory back, we’d like to have seen some sort for integrated sealed storage compartment.

uneau County and the surrounding areas have some of the most diverse and appealing scenery in the Midwest. From hills to forests, bluffs and waterways, each corner of the county has something special to offer. With the expansion of ATV routes, visitors can exit at any of the four Juneau County I-90/94 exits, eat and stay locally, and hop on their vehicles to explore the area. The success of organized off-roading in the region is partly thanks to the formation of the Joint County ATV Council (JCAC). Comprised of 17 individual ATV/UTV clubs associated with 10 Wisconsin counties (Clark, Wood, Jackson, Monroe, Juneau, LaCrosse, Vernon, Richland, Sauk, and Crawford), 32 Midwest Rider 2022
JCAC has carefully mapped the counties to show ATV/UTV road routes and off-road trails throughout the region. Visit their website for use of free interactive GPS-enabled or PDF print-it-yourself maps. Several of the JCAC mapped counties are included in what is known as the Driftless Area. The Driftless Area was not covered by a glacier during the last Ice Age, and as a result, many river valleys and ridges were formed by the melting glacial waters. The local topography includes bluffs, steep ridges, many rivers and streams, and an abundance of beautiful scenery.
Some of the highest degrees of slope are located in Vernon, Crawford and Richland counties. Finding a flat, straight road in any of
these counties is difficult – if not impossible. Explore these beautiful areas this summer. We guarantee you’ll enjoy the unique experience.

EXPLORE northerN minnesota’s superior forest FS.USDA.GOV
R
iding an off highway vehicle (OHV) can be a great way to get out and enjoy the forest, particularly one as large as Minnesota’s Superior National Forest. While exploring, there are some regulations you must follow and some guidelines you’ll want to follow. Both will help you have a safe and fun ride while minimizing impact to our natural resources. WHAT IS AN OHV? An OHV is any vehicle designed for off highway travel, excluding snowmobiles. This includes, but is not restricted to: • ATVs and UTVs • Off highway motorcycles • Four wheel drive trucks and other vehicles which are also capable of highway travel. WHERE CAN I RIDE? WHAT IS MVUM? The Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) is your key clearly showing which roads and trails are open to which type of OHV, as well as any seasonal restrictions. • If a road or trail you find in the forest is not on the map, it is not legal for you to ride it, regardless of signs. • Cross country travel is not permitted. • Downloadable map files are geo-referenced for use with smart phone wayfinding apps and some GPS devices. (fs.usda.gov) HIGHLIGHTS Refer to the MVUM for details, but here are some highlights. • These regulations pertain to any vehicle designed for offhighway use traveling within the Superior National Forest, with the exception of snowmobiles. • Travel is permitted only on the roads or trails which are shown on the map. • No cross country travel is permitted. • State regulations regarding OHVs apply in the National Forest.
• Seasonal restrictions are indicated on the map. • The maps are the final authority on use. • Maps are updated annually. Make sure yours is current. • Respect posted and unposted closures. • MVUMs show permitted use only within the Superior National Forest. Features outside the Forest are only shown as a courtesy: some roads and trails may not be shown; permitted use and restrictions are neither shown nor implied. MORE ABOUT MVUM The Motor Vehicle Use Map is published annually as four doublesided map sheets. The fronts and backs of these sheets define eight areas which cover the entire Superior National Forest. Each sheet has roads and trails coded to show precisely where you can use your particular type of off highway vehicle (OHV). OPERATE RESPONSIBLY Operating a motor vehicle on National Forest System roads, National Forest System trails, and in areas on National Forest System lands carries a greater responsibility than operating that vehicle in a city or other developed setting. Not only must you know and follow all applicable traffic laws, you need to show concern for the environment as well as other forest users. The misuse of motor vehicles can lead to the temporary or permanent closure of any designated road, trail, or area. As a motor vehicle operator, you are also subject to state traffic law, including state requirements for licensing, registration, and operation of the vehicle in question.
36 Midwest Rider 2022
KNOW THE RISKS Motor vehicle use, especially off highway vehicle use, involves inherent risks that may cause property damage, serious injury, and possibly death to participants. Drive cautiously and anticipate rough surfaces and features, such as snow, mud, vegetation, and water crossings common to remote driving conditions. By your participation, you voluntarily assume full responsibility for these damages, risks, and dangers. Take care at all times to protect yourself and those under your responsibility. YOU’RE RECREATING REMOTELY Much of the Superior National Forest is remote. Medical assistance may not be readily available. Cellular telephones do not work in many areas of the Superior National Forest. Take adequate food, water, first-aid supplies, and other equipment appropriate for the conditions and expected weather.
ALWAYS REMEMBER TO HAVE FUN, BUT RESPECT PRIVATE LAND! PROTECT YOUR PRIVILEGE. STAY ON DESIGNATED ROADS AND TRAILS AND IN DESIGNATED AREAS.

PROSPECTING COPPER COUNTRY IN MICHIGAN'S KEWEENAW KEWEENAW.INFO
M
ichigan’s Keweenaw has over 160 miles of trail to explore and there’s no better way to access their natural wonders, terrain, and history than by ATV or UTV. Glide along the coast of Lake Superior, or our favorite, through the ghost towns hidden among the vast Keweenaw forestlands. Trails on the peninsula run from Mass City in the south, all the way to Copper Harbor in the north. Many trails utilize repurposed rail grades built to transport copper ore and timber during the Copper Country’s mining heyday. The majority of communities can be accessed by trail with plenty of opportunities for fuel, dining and lodging. Visit the Keweenaw website for more detailed maps and resource information on the area to plan your off-road
tour of Copper Country this summer. For now, we’ll tease you with some ghost town stories…
prosperity, can be. When you hone in on your ghost town exploration, here are a few things to think about:
It is serenely quiet as you cautiously walk into the deserted towns located up and down the Keweenaw Peninsula. Standing in the overgrown grass, it’s hard to imagine these were lively, often raucous communities in the mid-1800s to early 1900s. America’s first mining boom was roaring to life and unearthing copper producing 10 times more wealth than the California Gold Rush.
Use extreme caution especially at abandoned mining sites. Dangerous, open mineshafts and wells are hidden by overgrowth. With 25+-foot drops, you won’t get out. Use caution near deteriorated townsite buildings and obey no trespassing signs.
But one-industry towns are risky. Rising production costs, a failed miners’ strike in 1913, followed by the Great Depression, caused jobs and people to vanish. Now, these phantom towns are vivid reminders of how fleeting natural resources, and
Look for old apple trees. Townspeople frequently planted these hardier fruit trees for a food source in their backyards. The trees will give you a sense of where children played, neighbors caught up on the news and rugged men soaked up the sun after spending hours in the dark earth. Visit (and stay at) Central Mine located north of U.S.
41, four miles north of Phoenix. This site has restored buildings, a visitor center with interpretive exhibits and a self-guided walking tour to introduce you to copper mining and town life. The town’s population peaked at 1,200+ in 1887 and dwindled to 100 by 1903 showing how quickly the pendulum of prosperity swung. Local Recommendations: Climb to the top of the upper rock pile for a magnificent view of the valley. Stay for a week at Miners house #8 and totally immerse in the story of this historically rich area. Tour the Laurium Manor Inn. While the village of Laurium is not a ghost town, it is the site of large homes that rose up from the hey-day of copper mining and lumbering. The most opulent is the Laurium Manor, a 45-room mansion built in 1908 for Calumet &

Arizona Mining Co. owners Thomas H. & Cornelia Hoatson. Today it is a bed-and-breakfast inn that in addition to being available for overnight stays offers daily self-guided tours between Memorial Weekend and late October. Visiting the Laurium Manor Inn is an excellent way to see the disparity of wealth during the height of copper boom-andbust years.

HOT BOTHERED
Cool your ride before the summer heat arrives with these simple solutions.
T
he warm summer days of exploring a wooded trail or an off-the-beaten-path minimum maintenance road are here. If you’re like us, a fully stocked cooler, your favorite navigation tools, and a few good friends is a recipe for a good time. To call Midwest weather unpredictable would be an understatement. Hot and humid one day can quickly turn to just above freezing and overcast the next. For that reason, we outfit our side-by-sides to be quickly adaptable to changing conditions. Flip down or removable windshields, quick conversion half doors, adjustable side venting, and rear close-off panels are all must haves for our side-by-side rides. But despite these popular accessories, many owners often complain about excessive in-cab heat, especially from more compact vehicles such as 50” wide models. The tighter packaging often puts you closer to the engine, radiator, exhaust, and cooling lines. The result is a cab area that can be nearly unbearable during the hottest days of summer. Fortunately, there are some simple do it yourself remedies that will dramatically reduce in cab temps and make for a more enjoyable experience by reducing noise and unwanted rattles and vibrations. The subject for this exercise was a Can-Am Maverick Trail 1000, a 50-inch-wide trail vehicle. While we love the performance of the Maverick Trail, a late season trip last summer had us melting from excessive cab heat.
There are really two solutions to reducing in-cab heat (short of having air-conditioning or moving to the Arctic Circle). One is to prevent the heat from penetrating the space through insulation and heat shielding. And the other is to generate more airflow to rapidly remove the heat – both from the cab after it enters, or better yet, from areas where the heat itself is being generated. We first looked at ways to reduce the amount of heat entering the cab. There are several options in the market when it comes to a combination insulation and sound deadening material. Most come in sheets, are self-adhesive, and can be easily formed and trimmed to fit just about any space. Some of the more effective versions include a foil face to further reflect heat. Knowing we didn’t need to tackle the underside of the engine compartment, we went with a non-foil faced solution form Noico Solutions (noico.info). The diamond patterned black finish blended perfectly with the OEM plastic making the finished product indiscernible to the casual eye. While the adhesive qualities of the product are very effective, we took the extra time to thoroughly clean the plastic before application. A warm, soapy water mixture and some elbow grease is all it takes. Another major area of heat production comes from the radiator lines that often run within the middle console up the forward mounted radiator. These often bare-aluminum or rubber lines can emit a ton of heat. To quell the output, we used simple neoprene insulation tubing from the plumbing section of our local hardware store. Lastly, while you have your buggy tore apart and cleaned up, look for any cracks and crevices where air from the engine compartment can leak into the cab. We used memory foam from an old mattress topper, cut the sections to size, and squeezed them into the gaps. Pay special attention to the front firewall area of the cab. With a forward mounted radiator, the rush of air blowing through the hot radiator will find its way into the cab through practically any gap. Use the memory foam or self-adhesive window and door gasket (also found at your local hardware store) to seal up the firewall as tight as you can.
42 Midwest Rider 2022
Upon completion, we found in-cab temps to be about 10-degrees cooler than previous. While not the same as enjoying the comfort of an air-conditioned enclosed cab, the results are definitely noticeable and well worth the less than $100 in material and half-day’s time we invested. Have a project or aftermarket product you’d like for us to evaluate and review here? Drop us a line and let us know at info@midwestriders.com
For additional, on-command airflow inside the cab, Wolf Snout offers this easy to install and wire overhead fan. While designed for a Polaris RZR, we suspect it could be easily adapted to just about any vehicle. Cost is just under $300, and you can find it at wolfsnout.net.
We removed the engine access cover and doubled-down the insulation in this area given it is closest to the engine and exhaust.
The Noico material comes in sheets measuring 36-square feet and is easily trimmed.
With the seats removed and the rear panel cleaned, cutting the forming the insulation was straightforward. A good tip is to tackle the space with several smaller pieces versus one or two large ones.
Simple pipe insulation from the plumbing section of your local hardware store is a simple and effective way to shield heat coming from the radiator lines running under the middle console on many side-bysides. May/June 2022 43
