MSYSA COACHING
Michigan State Youth Soccer Association
Curriculum, Culture, and Identity, Part III- Philosophy and Curriculum This is a follow up article to, “Designing a Curriculum”. In Part I, we defined a curriculum; A Curriculum provides a structured foundation by which players and coaches can develop. It is important to establish a level of criteria for both players and coaches in an effort to track progress as well as establish a common foundation for evaluation. Like steps up a ladder, the levels of the curriculum need to be progressive from A to Z. By establishing goals/ objectives at each level, both the player and the coach can be held to identifiable goal(s). Over time, the layers of goals will yield a culture, an identity for the club. In Part II, we provided ideas of how to design a curriculum based upon five key factors; The number of available coaches, the number of available fields, the number of players per coach, and the access to players, e.g. how often are players available to train. The objective in this article is to understand the philosophy of a club and its bearing on a curriculum. The club philosophy begins with the Mission Statement of the Club. Are you looking to provide a safe and healthy soccer environment? Are you looking to provide educational tools, coaches and facilities, to help players reach their potential? Once your Mission is defined, then you can move forward with a curriculum. CLUB X MiSSiON STATEMENT: “The mission of Club X is to provide the tools necessary for its members to enjoy and develop an interest and passion for soccer to their said abilities.” What then is our Club Philosophy? What do you want your players to learn? What should the finished player product look like?
14 MICHIGAN SOCCER
CLUB X PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PHiLOSOPHY: • Motto: “Strive for Excellence” • Establishes a training environment that values hard work • Establishes a priority on coaching education and player development • Establishes a brand of soccer that is fun, creative and attack oriented • Player development is a MARATHON not a SPRINT. The Mission Statement is complete. The Player Development Philosophy is complete. The meat and potatoes of your club are next. YOU need to detail the foundations, the building blocks necessary to reach your Player Development Philosophy goals within your Mission Statement. Club X wishes to have a final product that involves a particular playing style; a style that defines their culture as well as extracting the values of their Mission and Development Philosophy to the fullest. PLAYiNG PHiLOSOPHY • Develop the player first, team second • Possession is the key to scoring • Defend up field
Below is a graph that details the targets for Competitive Players in Club X. Club X General Player Development Targets for Competitive Players U13 U18 Ball competence Receiving air balls into space, add fake/ feint Serve balls over 2025 yards, both feet Strive for personal excellence Knowledge of structured games, 6:4, 7:5

What are your targets for your oldest players?
Once those targets are defined, the process works backwards. If a U13 player is expected to handle air balls, when do you introduce them into your curriculum? If “Speed of Play” is a crucial factor in your Player Development Philosophy, then when do you begin to introduce the factors in involved with “Speed of Play”? What are those factors technical ability, team shape, team communication?

The question remains of how and when to introduce the “teaching” of those targets? That, then, is the curriculum for your club; a defined program that develops players progressively through their maturation within the sport from point A to point Z, from age 5 to 18. Over time, the key targets form each age will yield a playing style that symbolizes your Playing Philosophy and an identity for your club.
• Use possession to probe the opposition The question remains of how and when to introduce the “teaching” of those for penetrating opportunities targets? That, then, is the curriculum • Utilize ball-oriented defense within a for your club; a defined program that zonal system develops players progressively through • Quick transitions: defense to offense, their maturation within the sport from offense to defense point A to point Z, from age 5 to 18. Individual player development is fundamental to their playing style. Possession is mentioned. Plus, a high Bryan C. Thorp tempo of defending up field is part of their Playing Philosophy.
