2017 Winter Guide Dear Members: Welcome to the 2017 Michigan Soccer Winter Guide Edition! In this edition, you will find information relating to tournaments, events & more! MSYSA had a very exciting year as it celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2016! From two teams being crowned National Champions in Frisco, Texas to hosting the Region II TOPSoccer Symposium, we are very fortunate to be part of such a great soccer community in Michigan. Without you, our members, we are not able to provide unique, exciting & memorable opportunities to our youth participants & volunteers. Congratulations to the Great Lakes Coed Soccer League that was selected to host the 2017 US Youth Soccer American Recreational Cup event in Muskegon, Michigan on June 9-11, 2017. If you or your team is interested in participating in this recreational tournament, please visit the GLCSL website, www.glcsoccer.org or click here. US Youth Soccer announced that Saginaw, Michigan and MSYSA will host the 2019 US Youth Soccer Region II Championships as part of the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series, the country’s oldest and most prestigious national youth soccer tournament. The games will take place at Saginaw Township Soccer Complex and will draw more than 4,100 players and an estimated 12,000 spectators over the course of the weeklong tournament. The tournament will take place on June 21-26, 2019 and will host more than 200 boys and girls teams, ages 13 to 19 from within Region II! More information on volunteer sign-ups will made available soon! In 2016, MSYSA hosted the MSYSA Administrator’s Workshop that was free to all members of MSYSA. With nearly 100 attendees, each one left the workshop with a wealth of knowledge provided by guest speakers from Dick’s Sporting Goods, SportsForms, Team App & US Soccer as well as information presented by the MSYSA Staff. Please continue to check out the MSYSA website for more information & encourage your club & league members to attend this year! MSYSA thanks each of you for playing important roles in the growth & development of our sport. Your contributions now & in the future are greatly appreciated. We hope you have a great & fun-filled spring season! Sincerely, Thomas K. Faro, MSYSA Executive Director

2017 Winter Guide 2016 MSYSA ODP Adalin Farnum College Scholarship Recipients Ryen O'Meara l Male Recipient Ryen currently resides in Canton, Michigan, and most currently played with the Canton Celtic 98 Black team within the US Youth Soccer Midwest Regional League (MRL). He has been previously named to the MSYSA State Pool team for the Olympic Development Program (ODP) as well as the US Youth Soccer Region II Pool Team. Ryen has earned the KLAA Scholar Athlete award, become a member of the National Honors Society as well as orchestrates numerous service events and leadership opportunities within his community as part of this NHS position. Ryen provides acts of kindness by setting an example. If he can provide a smile to someone to brighten their day and show an upcoming class-mate or team-mate how to be an example, he will continue to do more. Ryen believes that a true act of kindness doesn't need an outcome of a 'win' but an outcome that is simply self-less and enhances someone's day. Emily Ashby l Female Recipient Emily is from Ada, and most currently played with the Midwest United FC '00 Royal team in the US Youth Soccer MRL. She has previously been named to the MSYSA State ODP Team as well as the US Youth Soccer Region II Pool team where she's competed at the Boca Invitational and Costa Rica Invitational as part of Region II. Within her community, Emily supports the Special Olympics Medaling Monkey 5K by volunteering her time and efforts. Through her acts of kindness, she feels that in going out of her way to provide a simple compliment or allowing someone to lean on her for guidance is rewarding as she enjoys assisting community organizations such as Kid's Food Basket and spending time at the local Veterans Home. Emily's acts of kindness has provided many opportunities for growth and learning and believes this has helped her create a good foundation for her future. Winter Guide

2017 Winter Guide RECREATIONAL GRANTS
Recreational Grant Any league or club currently affiliated with the Michigan State Youth Soccer Association may apply for a grant. The following are ideas for grant topics, but are, by no means, the only ideas that may be successful; outreach to schools to increase membership, setting up a play day or tournament, long-range-planning process, player/coach handbook, financial software, startup newsletter costs, training equipment, coaching education, web page development, computer, software, etc. Recreational Tournament Grant Recreational Grants totaling $15,000 will be made for the purpose of enhancing existing recreational soccer tournaments within the State of Michigan. Any recreational tournament currently sanctioned by the Michigan State Youth Soccer Association may apply for a grant. Due to the limited nature of the grant monies available, the grants are designed to be small and no grant amount over $3,000 will be awarded. It is anticipated that most grants will be in the $500 range and can consist of certificates, cash or in-kind services. 2018 MSYSA Recreational Grant & Tournament Application CLICK HERE
MSYSA Recreational Grant Package (Recreational Leagues) Recently, the Great Lakes Soccer League, a member organization of MSYSA, ceased operation and expressed their sincerest gratitude to their members, players, parents and the Michigan State Youth Soccer Association. To continue the development and opportunities Great Lakes Soccer League once provided, they've donated recreational funds specific to the betterment of youth recreational soccer in Michigan. Recreational grants totaling $30,000 will be made available for the purpose of enhancing recreational soccer club and leagues within the State of Michigan. Any league or club currently affiliated with the Michigan State Youth Soccer Association may apply for a grant. 2018 MSYSA Recreational Grant (Recreational Leagues) CLICK HERE
