If the two lovers hadn’t married, Romeo’s banishment might have led to heartbreak, but each could have moved on romantically, just as Romeo has already forgotten the Rosaline he thought he loved so surely at the story’s outset. But the furtive wedding has transformed them from two kids with a crush to husband and wife, a union sanctified by heaven and sealed with one passionate night in each other’s arms.

Romeo and Juliet Steven Schipper
Shahin Sayadi
Alon Nashman
When Steven Schipper first conceived of setting Romeo and Juliet in contemporary Jerusalem, he turned to senior artists in the Canadian theatre community to begin a dialogue about how best to realize the concept in a sensitive and respectful way. Shahin Sayadi has been a wonderful resource in the Muslim community and helped with national auditions; his company Onelight Theatre is known for celebrating Canada’s cultural diversity. Alon Nashman, artistic director of Toronto-based Theaturtle, is the production’s Jewish cultural advisor. His one-man play about MTC co-founder John Hirsch will debut at next year’s Stratford Shakespeare Festival. STEVEN > When I contacted you with the concept behind R & J, what were your initial thoughts? Shahin > I thought this was an innovative approach to the play and I was pleased you were involving cultural consultants from the very beginning. Alon > My first thought was that you were
opening a can of worms, and a very exciting one. Everyone has a fascination, and an opinion, about Jerusalem, and a preconceived idea of what Jerusalem is, what life is like there. Every domestic story there is related to a political, historical and spiritual unfolding. Steven > I’ve taken as inspiration the line: “Here’s much to do with hate, but more with love.” Is it possible to simply let the text speak for itself, or does the setting and concept require additional context? Alon > The challenge is relieving the audience of
preconceived notions, having them encounter the characters and situation, and opening them to the 6

play’s imperative to protect love and life. I also hope the audience will be moved by the production to investigate the wonders and complexities of Jerusalem, and to understand its difficult tangle of prejudice, feud and rivalry. Shahin > Although Shakespeare’s story has many parallels in other cultures, his text was conceived and transmitted in a specific cultural context. Of course, Shakespeare himself transplanted the story into a foreign setting and this did not diminish the impact of the play on English audiences. I think you have found the balance between respecting Shakespeare’s work and challenging the artists and audience members to engage with this classic theatre work in a new and modern way. Steven > In auditions, actors expressed concerns that their culture would be portrayed in a less favourable light than other cultures. Many of the characters in Romeo and Juliet behave badly, and only recognize their pettiness and

though for the first time. Will it be possible to do this without political overtones?
Shahin > It is important to recognize, as you have, that bringing other cultures to the stage in a meaningful and respectful way is a sensitive issue. As a culturally diverse theatre artist, I am pleased to see a theatre as prominent as MTC taking on the challenge instead of shying away from it. I think there is a bright future for theatre in Canada if major theatres seek expertise, as needed, to bring cultural diversity to the stage.
Alon > The very name Jerusalem can be trans-
lated as “city of peace,” but historically it has been a place of great intensity, which has often bubbled over into conflict. So, yes, it’s going to

heritage, and often look similar, eat similar foods and listen to similar music. When I think of this production being set among Semitic peoples, that the families involved are cousins and not strangers, concerns about how one or the other side is portrayed are lessened. Steven > As director, I’ve chosen a framework I think will be exciting and engaging, in the hopes that audience members who are familiar with the story hear and see the play as

get political, but that doesn’t worry me. There is no shortage of potential “star-crossed lover” stories that arise there, most obviously between
From
Ancient Rome to Punk Rock: Reinterpretations of
Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has been adapted or reinterpreted many times. Frequently, it is the culture or setting that is changed, providing a fresh spin on the classic tale. Here are some of the ways the timeless story has been reimagined:
1662 Almost a half century af-
ter Shakespeare’s death, an adaptation by James Howard is regularly performed by the Duke’s Company. Their version is a tragicomedy, in which the two lovers survive.
1680 Thomas Otway produces
an adaptation called The History and Fall of Caius Marius, moving the play to ancient Rome. Romeo is Marius, Juliet is Lavinia and the feud is between patricians and plebeians.
1956 Peter Ustinov writes
Romanoff and Juliet, a comedic adaptation of the script set in a fictional mid-European country in the depths of the Cold War. The play is later adapted into a film.
1957
West Side Story gives the play a musical touch, moving the action to New York City and turning the feuding families into warring street gangs the Jets and the Sharks. nov/dec 2011

an Israeli and a Palestinian couple (that story has unfolded many times in real life), but also between families of different Christian sects, or between Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews, or Sunni and Shi’a Muslims. Jerusalem is a gathering place, a place of pilgrimage for many, and one of the most scrutinized cities in the world.
Shahin > Beyond having a memorable theatre experience, I hope audiences will find there is value in bringing new perspectives to the stage. There are many stories to be told and many voices to be heard. I hope this production will whet the appetites of audience members to seek out challenging, perspective-widening theatre works.
Shahin > When theatre artists are doing their work well, the focus is on the art and craft of theatre, but it is inevitable that, with any story, the work will have overtones that speak to politics, society, economics, religion, etc. In my opinion, theatre should not try to avoid political overtones; it should try to avoid bias and stereotyping of political realities. But at the centre of this play is a love story and the focus is really on Romeo and Juliet and how the politics of their families and communities shape their destinies.
Alon > My hope is they marvel at the way
Shakespeare seems to have been writing about our time, that his play is urgent, necessary, provocative and wise. The play pits our striving for justice and desire for love against a despair that violence and conflict are never-ending. Nowhere is that hope so great, or that despair so frustrating as in Jerusalem. Personally, I hold on to the hope that the “city of peace” can be a place where people of many traditions can join hands and dance together.
Steven > What do you hope Winnipeg audiences will take away from the production?

Franco Zeffirelli directs a big budget film production of the classic play starring Leonard Whiting, 17, and Olivia Hussey, 15. It is the first major production to cast leads who are close to the age of the characters, breaking the tradition of casting older actors in the title roles.

theatres in Jerusalem mount an Israeli-Palestinian co-production in which Romeo is Palestinian and Juliet is Israeli.
1996 Romeo + Juliet, a movie

1997
Folger Shakespeare Theatre moves the play to the suburbs. Romeo sneaks into a barbecue thrown by the Capulets and meets Juliet. Juliet finds out about Tybalt’s death while at school.
1998
Joe Calarco adapts and directs an all-male cast in Shakespeare’s R&J, reimagining the classic story as the modern tale of blossoming love between two gay teenagers.
2004 Second City satirizes the
play with The Second City’s Romeo and Juliet Musical: The People vs. Friar Laurence, The Man Who Killed Romeo and Juliet. In this version of the tale, Friar Laurence gets framed for the murders of every Capulet and Montague in Verona.
Angeles produces a Native American version of the play, Kino and Teresa. The play is set in 17th century Santa Fe and revolves around the conflict between the Pueblo Indians and Spanish colonists.
2008 A South African
production sets the play in postapartheid Cape Town, featuring the gang-ravaged youth culture of the divided city.
2010 The Royal Shakespeare

Curtain Calls
Wherefore art thou Juliet? Pam Patel has a unique physical and vocal approach to creating a character. We sat down with her to find out about her creative process and how she feels about playing one of the world’s best-known tragic lovers.
How did you get involved in the performing arts?
I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a performer. I also knew that I wanted to change the world, but those are big dreams for a little girl. So I thought I would focus on the performing bit! I always loved to sing. Growing up with Indian parents, I was surrounded by music, whether it was classical, Bollywood, or even folk, and I think that’s what pushed me towards exploring what I could do with my own voice. So with this passion, I studied music in university, not really Pam Patel knowing what I would do when I entered the “real world.” How did you transition from music into theatre? When I graduated in 2008, a good friend of mine suggested I audition for the Multicultural Theatre Space (MT Space), a theatre company based in Kitchener. I was hesitant, but I also knew I didn’t really have anything to lose. And so, I auditioned for Majdi Bou-Matar, the artistic director of the company. Knowing I wasn’t a trained actor, he took a chance on me and cast me in a short Theatre for Social Change piece about hate crimes. This led to being cast in The Last 15 Seconds, which has gone on to tour across Canada and overseas to the Middle East. I can sincerely say that the MT Space has made me into the artist I am today and helped me land a starring role in Romeo and Juliet. I feel that I am fulfilling the dreams I had when 10

I was a little girl. I’m not only performing on stage as a singer, actor, and sometimes even a dancer, but I’m also changing the world with the art I create. What do you love about performing? What I love about what I do is that I’m able to give people an experience, in real time, which allows them to explore their emotions, and become more aware of the world surrounding them. When I am on stage, I am able to shed my own layers, explore my emotions and capabilities and live an experience with my cast mates where we laugh, sweat and cry together. Being an actor is difficult, and sometimes we ask ourselves why the heck we do what we do. But when that one person comes up to you after a performance and says that you’ve changed them, or you gave them a space in which they could cry or laugh, you know that’s why you do it, and it’s always worth it. You trained originally as an opera singer. How does that training translate to Shakespearean theatre? Just like there are various components in opera, like text, voice, orchestra, staging and story, a Shakespearean play has the various components of text, rhythm, stress, structure and relationships. I often create theatre by first exploring physical relationships and emotions in a space with different-cultured bodies, and secondly adding the text to place these movements and scenes
Romeo and Juliet in context. I now have the opportunity to work in a reverse process where we discover relationships and emotions based on a familiar text. I’m looking forward to having this experience broaden my horizons as an actor. Juliet is such an iconic character. How do you feel about playing her? What kind of spin do you hope to put on the character? I embrace the opportunity to play an iconic character that has been reinterpreted so many times. I hope I can bring my rawness and honesty to the stage to produce a character that is very real, genuine and connected to present-day reality. I also hope to bring in elements of the physical work I do to the stage. In addition to exploring the ways in which Juliet carries different emotions, I would like to portray a Juliet who also holds the history of her family and land, her culture, her language, and her experiences and knowledge in her physical body, as well as in her voice. Shakespeare was a brilliant man to have written such timeless characters. We can find Romeos,
Juliets, and even Mercutios in all of our realities, and the realities of these characters are found even now, in universal settings. What I would like to do is find what it is in myself that makes me “Juliet.” I can’t create the idea of a character and put on a mask to become them, but what I can do is find those layers in myself, in my body, in my history, in my culture and language, and present them on stage to tell a truth and live an experience. What are you looking forward to the most with this production of Romeo and Juliet? I’m actually really looking forward to the audience reception and feedback. I think that part of our responsibility as actors, directors, designers and theatre practitioners is to instigate a dialogue with the audience. The audience is witness to the events occurring on stage, and therefore, needs to be affected intellectually and emotionally. It is our job as actors to affect this audience. I hope we have done our job in conveying this unique interpretation of Romeo and Juliet.

William Shakespeare
English playwright and poet William Shakespeare is recognized in much of the world as the greatest of all dramatists. Hundreds of editions of his plays have been published, including translations in all major languages. Scholars have written thousands of books and articles about his plots, characters, themes and language. He is the most widely quoted author in history, and his plays have probably been performed more times than those of any other dramatist. Shakespeare’s plays include comedies (A Midsummer Night’s Dream and As You Like It), histories (Richard iii) and tragedies (Hamlet and Macbeth). His other works include Othello, Measure for Measure, King Lear, Twelfth Night and more than 150 sonnets.

The incomparable Nicola Cavendish returns to MTC in the play that speaks to anyone who has ever wanted more. With wit and a colourful vocabulary, Shirley commits subtle anarchy as she escapes the confines of her “unused life”, embarking on the adventure of a lifetime.
Armed with wicked wit and astute insight, George Bernard Shaw pits mother against daughter to expose the hypocrisy of Victorian society. Starring Seana McKenna (Medea, A Streetcar Named Desire), Mrs. Warren’s Profession is MTC’s contribution to ShawFest 2012.

Building a Lifelong Relationship “I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.” – Oscar Wilde A trip to the theatre does more than encourage an appreciation of the arts. Young people who are educated in the arts get the opportunity to use their creativity and ability to think critically when they imagine the world seen on the stage. Their emotions and sense of empathy are engaged when they study characters; their ideas of history and society are developed through period pieces or plays set in other parts of the world. When we involve young people in the world of theatre, we help them to experience a sense of community that transcends the boundaries of space, time and culture, and in so doing, we honour the diversity of not just our city or country, but of the world.
relationship. In support of this pursuit, we offer a variety of programming for young people: our Theatre for Young Audiences matinees will welcome more than 5,500 students to the John Hirsch Mainstage this season; the Backstage Pass program offers grade 11 and 12 students the chance to take an in-depth look at theatre with help from a variety of theatre professionals; scholarships and apprenticeships are available to students in theatre studies programs to provide assistance and valuable on-the-job experience; facility tours enable groups to take a look behind the scenes to gain an appeciation of what goes on at MTC.
MTC hopes to do much more than merely introduce youth to the experience of live theatre; we want that first meeting to grow into a lifelong
Your continued support of MTC helps make theatre accessible for younger generations and, in turn, helps create a stronger community. Thank you so much.

The Power of Love The story of star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet is one of the most enduring and famous plays by William Shakespeare and is a classic of English literature. Most of us have studied the play in school or have seen this classic work presented as a play, ballet or film. The story has been retold many times (see page 7) and the blend of comedy and tragedy makes the play an audience favourite. In 1950, it was adapted into the musical West Side Story, where the feuding families were depicted as rival street gangs. In our production, director Steven Schipper sets the play in present-day Jerusalem, heightening the relevance of the world’s greatest love story and encouraging audiences to reflect on the world around us. At MTC, we strive to entertain, challenge and engage our audiences, believing that a great season of theatre should do all these things. While the lives of Romeo and Juliet end tragically, the truth of Shakespeare’s tale is that their deaths bring their families together in peace and reconciliation. The Montagues and the Capulets were not that different after all. Similarly, the Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths have common roots. While these religions may have different practices and traditions, they share similar values of love, peace and charity.
“Two households, both alike in dignity” – Prologue to Romeo and Juliet The approaching holiday season celebrates joy, hope, peace and love and also gives pause to think about how our personal lives and the world around us can reflect those themes. It is also a season of giving and a time when donors traditionally make gifts to our Annual Fund. These gifts keep our doors open wide with affordable ticket prices and ensure artistically rewarding and technically ambitious theatre is presented on our stages. As a donor to our Annual Fund, you contribute toward the 50% of production costs not covered by ticket prices; you play a role in showcasing our community’s fine artistic talent to our audiences; and you educate the next generation of Manitoba theatre audiences. Donations received before December 31 are eligible for a 2011 charitable tax receipt.
“O! she doth teach the torches to burn bright.” – Romeo Your support of our Annual Fund keeps MTC’s artistic fire burning bright this season. Make a gift today.

MTC MOURNS THE LOSS OF FORMER ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ARIF HASNAIN This past spring, Arif Hasnain passed away in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Arif was MTC’s sixth Artistic Director, taking the reins from Len Cariou in 1976. Arif began his career at MTC as an actor in Alice Through the Looking Glass, Hamlet and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. In four seasons as artistic director, Arif balanced familiar plays with risk-taking, directing such plays as The Crucible, Measure for Measure, Dracula and The Seagull, which featured a young Kathleen Turner. Arif’s directing career took him to the Vancouver Playhouse, the Cricket Theatre in Minneapolis, and the Shaw and Stratford festivals. Arif was also a gifted teacher, working with students at the National Theatre School, University of Manitoba, University of Ottawa, Dalhousie University and Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. MTC mourns the loss of Arif Hasnain – actor, director, artistic director, mentor and friend. 30
