A Few Good Men

A Brief History Lesson

Doug Mertz, Paul Essiembre and Ashley O’Connell in A Few Good Men.

by Stephanie Buri Choy A Few Good Men is set in the summer of 1986 in Washington, DC and the United States Naval Base located at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The characters in the play are all members of the military, either as marines or military lawyers. The play takes place near the end of the so-called “Cold War.” The Cold War took place from 1947 to 1991, and was an ongoing state of political and military tension between the United States and the communist Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was made up of a number of Eastern European countries, the most powerful being Russia. While no direct military action took place during the Cold War, it was a time of heightened fear, since both the United States and the Soviet Union possessed nuclear weapons, and any use of these weapons would lead to massive destruction on both sides. By 1986 the tension had decreased, as the two sides engaged in talks and the Soviet Union weakened. In 1991, the Soviet Union officially dissolved and many of the former countries that were a part of it became independent again. Cuba was involved in the Cold War because of their alliance with the Soviet Union. In 1959, Fidel Castro took power in Cuba after a revolution, and in 1961, he formally declared Cuba to be Communist 6

and allied with the Soviet Union. As a result, the United States ended its diplomatic relations with Cuba, instituted a trade embargo, and restricted travel from the United States to Cuba. Two major incidents, the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 and the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, led to worsening relations and the fear of nuclear conflict between the two countries. In the 1980s, the US was continuing their anti-communist foreign policy, and was looking for ways to undermine communist control of Cuba. Guantanamo Bay has been a United States Navy base since 1903, and continued to be held by the US even after their diplomatic relations with Cuba crumbled in the 1960s. After Fidel Castro took control in Cuba, he told the United States to leave the base, but they refused. In response, Castro sent armed troops to Guantanamo, and the United States countered by building a wall around the base and setting an elite Marines unit to guard it. In the 1980s, when Aaron Sorkin wrote this play, Guantanamo Bay was still a tense place, even as the Cold War was drawing to an end. US troops stationed at the base were physically close to Cuban troops, and many feared a war could break out between the two countries. Gunfire was exchanged from time to time over the wall. Since the 2000s, Guantanamo Bay has become infamous as the site where many suspected terrorists are being held by the United States.

Curtain Calls

A Few Good Men

Director’s Notes by James MacDonald When I was researching A Few Good Men, I entered into a world about which I knew very little. I have always been a military history buff, but that knowledge and interest was largely confined to our own Canadian military traditions. Over the past several months, I have gained a new understanding of the arcane workings of the United States Marine Corps. And, I have to admit, a new appreciation. We expect soldiers to be fierce fighting – and sometimes killing – machines. We expect and require soldiers to be ready to face the most deadly of situations with bravery and fearlessness. And yet, war itself is a game played by ever-changing rules – particularly in today’s world, on fields of battle where the enemy itself is often uncertain. And there are a number of cases – the recent prosecution of Canadian Capt. Robert Semrau comes to mind – where the “truth” is difficult to detect, and impossible for civilians to conceive.

The play continues to have relevance 25 years after it was written – if anything, its resonance and importance have increased. The post 9/11 world has drawn the role of the military, and actions of soldiers in a war zone, into sharp focus. At the same time, the murky areas of war are open to the glare of full-time media and internet coverage, exposing the tactics of the military to the opinions and judgment of civilians. We can justifiably expect those who are sent to defend the banner of “freedom” to uphold the values of the society which they are sent to protect … but can we ever fully understand the pressures under which these soldiers operate? The play poses a number of questions: about the relationship between soldiers and civilians, about the relationship between lawyers and their clients, about the conflict inherent in a “just” legal defense in the face of a heinous crime and, above all, about how we as a society handle the grey areas of “truth.” On a personal note, I am thrilled as always to return to the great city of Winnipeg, where my great-grandparents settled over a century ago, and where I started my professional career.

After gaining a reputation in the 1980s as a promising young playwright, Aaron Sorkin’s A Few Good Men caught Hollywood’s attention; the film rights were acquired before the play even premiered. Castle Rock Entertainment hired Sorkin to adapt his play for the big screen, and the film, directed by Rob Reiner, became a box-office success. In 1989, he received the prestigious Outer Critics Circle award as Outstanding American Playwright for the stage version of A Few Good Men. Sorkin spent the early 1990s writing two other screenplays at Castle Rock, Malice and The American President. In the mid-1990s, he worked as a script doctor on films such as Bulworth and Schindler’s List. Sorkin has gone on to write for many movies and TV shows. Besides A Few Good Men, he has written The Social Network, as well as cooperating on Enemy of the State (1998), The Rock (1996) and Excess Baggage (1997). Sorkin’s TV credits include the Emmy Award-winning The West Wing (1999–2006), Sports Night (1998–2000), Studio 60 on Sunset Strip (2006–2007) and, currently, The Newsroom.

MTC Gets Students Talking About MTC spoke with Elliot Lazar, a recent high school graduate and participant in the Backstage Pass program. Elliot is an actor who most recently appeared onstage in the 2012 Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival hit Bare. Is there anything about the experience of watching a show that stands out for you? There is nothing quite like live theatre. Unlike film, everything you see is happening live, right in front of you in real time. The performers are phenomenal and, when you’re sitting so close to them, you can really get a sense of character. Even for just a moment, what’s happening in front of you is real on some level, and there’s something really thrilling about that. Do the talkbacks with the actors add anything to the experience? Talkbacks with the actors allow participants an inside look into the world of the performers, their careers, their lives and their craft. It’s an invaluable sharing of knowledge that can really be useful – especially to emerging artists. How do you feel after you’ve seen a production? I’ve found that the moment right after a play has ended is often filled with conversation. Wherever you go in the theatre you can hear a conversation about the play, whether it’s trying to figure out how the special effects work, or exploring the show’s themes or message. Theatre is really unique in that it can bring people together like that. These plays really leave you thinking – there’s always at least one moment that will reach you on a more emotional level. All of a sudden, anything from conflict in the Middle East to an unfulfilled British housewife can be relatable. 20

Live Theatre!

Sponsored by With support from Great-West Life, MTC is once again pleased to present student-only matinees, welcoming high school students to experience the thrill of live theatre. Productions are chosen with both educators and students in mind: school groups will be treated to performances at both the John Hirsch Mainstage and the Tom Hendry Warehouse in a series that includes A Few Good Men, Red, Miracle on South Division Street and The Penelopiad. S T R O N G E R C O M M U N I T I E S T O G E T H E R TM

These productions (as well as Gone With the Wind and Other People’s Money) have study guides that include discussion questions, classroom activities, background information, glossaries and more. They’re a valuable resource for all of our patrons, and can be found at www.mtc.mb.ca/studyguides one month before the show’s run starts. Student matinees as well as public matinees are followed by a 15-minute Talkback which allows the audience to chat with the cast and ask questions about the production and life in the theatre. They’re a great way to enrich your experience at the theatre.

Setting the Stage Jameson Matthew Parker and Oliver Becker in Red. Photo by David Cooper

Mark Rothko by John Luna Reviews of Red cite its success at coming to terms with the challenging task of staging a play about a visual artist. The devices of theatre – tension and expectation, the palpable, sympathetic resonance of figures on a stage – seem irreconcilable to the quiet contemplation of flat objects on museum walls. And yet it is these qualities that Mark Rothko felt compelled to capture in painting. Dramatic yet vulnerable, eloquent yet obscure; these words describe the artist but also perhaps, his work. Who was Rothko? He was born Marcus Rothkowitz in what is now Latvia, in 1905, to a family of industrious middle-class Jewish intellectuals who immigrated to the United States eight years later. Marcus proved an able student, earning a scholarship to Yale, but found its elitism alienating and moved to New York, where, thanks to a friend at the Art Students League, he decided to become a painter. Like many Americans of his generation, Rothko’s artistic education was prodigal; during the Depression years, artists of any stripe struggled to survive. At the same time, the Museums of Modern Art (1929) and Non-Objective Painting (later the Guggenheim, 1939) exhibited experimental Europeans like Picasso and Matisse. Getting by teaching children’s art classes, Rothko educated himself in museums and galleries, meeting mentors like Arshile Gorky and Max Weber, immigrants themselves with polyglot passions. 24

Rothko also worked as an artist for the WPA, a New Deal labour program, alongside notables like Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt, Louise Nevelson and Milton Avery. Many of these artists would go on to develop a style called Abstract Expressionism, emphasizing spontaneous brushwork and intuitive symbolism. They were influenced by the European Surrealists, who used elements of chance (such as “automatic writing”) to liberate the unconscious, producing unexpected images with mythological and political overtones. Rothko, who had studied the psychoanalytic theories of Carl Jung, made connections between “primitive” art and the art of children, in which free colour was the primary impulse. After the war, the United States emerged as a superpower eager to prove that American culture was more bold, expansive and democratic than any that had come before. The Abstract Expressionists – whose approach to painting emphasized individuality, scale and physical energy – fit the bill. Rothko received his first significant praise from critic Harold Rosenberg, who coined the term Action Painting to describe the way artists enacted conflict within the “arena” of the canvas. As both a Jewish artist haunted by the Holocaust and an avid reader of Shakespeare and Orestes, Rothko wanted to relate the catastrophes of contemporary life to an art that was “tragic and timeless.” Rather than tell stories, Rothko’s canvasses offered a testament to tension and anxiety, resolution and ecstatic calm.

Red Rothko crafted softly luminous surfaces, displayed without frames to encourage communion with the viewer, whom the artist hoped would feel "enveloped into” a paradoxical combination of intimacy and awe, at tantalizing proximity to “an unknown space.” For a painter interested in intangibles, Rothko’s method was nothing if not physical: pigment solution scrubbed into raw canvas, followed by scumbled skeins of overlapping brushwork; glancing and staining, burning and occluding. The paintings unfold in perception, yielding up structure to time and light. They are absorbing but also moving, a reaction Rothko sought when he described painting as a “religious experience” he wanted to share. By the mid-1950s Rothko’s work sold to notable collectors, skyrocketing in value. Success was isolating: stung by the scorn of less successful peers, Rothko also feared that his intentions went unrecognized by collectors who enjoyed his work as decorative. In 1958, the Seagram Company completed their architecturally significant headquarters on Park Avenue and commissioned Rothko to make paintings for the building’s luxury

restaurant, The Four Seasons. Rothko was uneasy with making artwork for the enjoyment of wealthy diners, but the opportunity to produce paintings for a dedicated interior proved irresistible. For years, he had wanted to make a grand statement, a “place” that went beyond the effects of any single work. Rothko designed horizontal compositions suggestive of architecture: columns, doors or windows. He travelled to Europe: the reds of Pompeii’s Villa of the Mysteries influenced his palette; while in Florence, the murals at Michelangelo’s Laurentian Library inspired visions of a space in which “all the doors and windows are bricked up.” In selecting these precedents, Rothko sought to measure himself against the European tradition, but also to come to grips with his conflicted ambivalence. The outcome of this struggle, between ego and integrity, ambition and authenticity, plays out in the closing scenes of Red.

Curtain Calls

Red Oliver Becker steps into Mark Rothko’s paint-splattered shoes in Red. We sat down with him for a chat about art. Red is the story of a key moment in an artist’s life. What do you like about the play? It’s about art! It addresses the subjective area of art and how it plays or doesn’t play a role in one’s life. What is its purpose? Is it enough just to be “entertained” without any active participation from the viewer? What is art? What is red? What is good theatre? What constitutes “good” art as opposed to “bad” art? The relationship of the viewer with the art? It's a very thoughtprovoking, well-written, visceral, muscular and exciting play. As demanding as it is, it is exhilarating to play and I like that too. How does playing a real person like Mark Rothko differ from playing a fictional character? You would think it would differ, but not by much. The script and then one’s own imagination is always the major resource. My Rothko will not be the same or any closer to another actor’s interpretation of the role. The script is initially the template (or palate in this case) from which you draw clues, objectives and insight into the character’s mind. Playing a non-fictional character, I might gain a bit more insight from what other people said about him or how he walked or talked. But as with any character in any play, my job is to get as close as I can to the truth as intended by the playwright. What do you hope people will take away from the show? What any good piece of theatre or art is intended to do – as Rothko himself had intended his paintings to do – not just to “entertain” but to make people “think and feel and really look,” discuss, challenge their preconceived ideas and leave them changed in some way.

OCT/NOV 2012

Born Marcus Rotkovitch in the town of Dvinsk, Latvia, then part of the Russian Empire, Mark Rothko immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of 10, settling in Portland, Oregon. A gifted student, Rothko attended Yale University on scholarship from 1921 to 1923, but, disillusioned by the social milieu and financial hardship, he dropped out and moved to New York to “bum around and starve a bit.” A chance invitation from a friend brought him to a drawing class at the Art Students League where he discovered his love of art. He took two classes there but was otherwise self-taught. Rothko painted in a figurative style for nearly 20 years, his portraits and depictions of urban life baring the soul of those living through the Great Depression in New York. The painter Milton Avery offered Rothko both artistic and nutritional nourishment during these lean years. In the 1930s, Rothko exhibited with The Ten, a close-knit group of nine American painters, which included fellow Avery acolyte, Adolph Gottlieb. Success was moderate at best but the group provided important incubation for the Abstract Expressionist school to come. The war years brought with it an influx of European surrealists, influencing most of the New

ARTISTS York painters, among them Rothko, to take on a neosurrealist style. Rothko experimented with mythic and symbolic painting for five years before moving to pure abstraction in the mid 1940s and ultimately to his signature style of two or three rectangles floating in fields of saturated color in 1949. Beginning in the early 1950s Rothko was heralded, along with Jackson Pollock, Willem deKooning, Franz Kline and others, as the standard bearers of the New American Painting – a truly American art that was not simply a derivative of European styles. By the late 1950s, Rothko was a celebrated (if not wealthy) artist, winning him three mural commissions that would dominate the latter part of his career. Only in the last of these, the Rothko Chapel in Houston, was he able to realize his dream of a truly contemplative environment in which to interact deeply with his artwork. Red presents a fictionalized account of Rothko’s frustrated first attempt to create such a space in New York’s Four Seasons restaurant. Rothko sought to create art that was timeless; paintings that expressed basic human concerns and emotions that remain constant not merely across decades but across generations and epochs. He looked to communicate with his viewer at the most elemental level and through his artwork, have a conversation that was intense, personal and, above all, honest. A viewer’s tears in front of one of

his paintings told him he had succeeded. While creating a deeply expressive body of work and garnering critical acclaim, Rothko battled depression and his brilliant career ended in suicide in 1970.

individual giving generosity. We invite you to join our donor family with a gift to the Annual Fund.

SAM: What’s the code? DAWSON: Unit, Corps, God, Country. A Few Good Men, Act I The US Marines in A Few Good Men follow a strict code which involves loyalty to their military unit, their corps, their God and their country. Sadly, their code does not always serve them well. Playwright Aaron Sorkin takes us on an intriguing journey where acts committed in the name of a noble cause are not necessarily righteous and noble. The presentation of engaging and provocative plays like A Few Good Men is part of MTC’s Mission – our code, if you will – that guides our energy and purpose each season: The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre exists to celebrate the widest spectrum of theatre art. Deeply rooted in the province of Manitoba, which gave it life and provides for its growth, MTC aspires to both reflect and inform the community it serves. Throughout MTC’s history, loyal donors have supported our mission through their financial

The 2012/13 season at the John Hirsch and Tom Hendry Theatres certainly reflects the widest spectrum of theatre art. From the world premiere of Gone With the Wind to Margaret Atwood’s fresh take on the Greek classic The Penelopiad, the upcoming season showcases musicals, tragedy, comedy and high drama. Your support plays an integral role in our ability to present these diverse offerings. MTC also continues to serve and reflect the greater community through quality programming, education and outreach. The Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival is the second-largest Fringe Festival in North America and is part of MTC’s ongoing commitment to developing new artists and audiences for live theatre. Similarly, the Master Playwright Festival unites artists from local theatre companies to present the works of master playwrights. Each year, our regional tour shares the excitement of live theatre with communities in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. Education and outreach opportunities are provided through scholarships and apprenticeships as well as through various MTC programs such as Theatre for Young Audiences, Backstage Pass, Monday Mix and Talkbacks. In so many ways, MTC truly reflects and informs the community it serves. We all live with goals or a “code” that reflects our values and attitudes. Winnipeg business leader and philanthropist Robert Chipman, addressing his high school alumni at a tribute dinner, once described the following as one of the precepts that he lives by: “The winners in the world are those that give. This is our city – we want to be proud of it. We all need to contribute to making it an increasingly better community.” Help us achieve our mission and contribute to the greater community with a gift to our Annual Fund. Visit our website at www. mtc.mb.ca for an outline of donor benefits or contact Garth in the Development office at 204-956-1340 ext. 240 for more information.
