Margaret Mitchell’s epic romance comes to life in this new adaptation. As civil war rages, Scarlett O’Hara struggles to survive at any cost. No one is safe from her charming manipulations until she meets her match in the dashing rogue Rhett Butler.
Stephen Sondheim’s darkly comic musical takes aim at nine people who assassinated – or tried to – the President of the United States. These lost souls believe the American dream has failed them and they’re ready to settle the score. Part of SondheimFeSt

Change is a major theme in Miracle on South Division Street. The characters are all challenged when secrets are revealed and they are forced to re-examine their lives. Clara Nowak’s relationship to her house and her neighbourhood is an extension of that theme. “No matter what’s changing in her life, this neighbourhood is a part of Clara; it’s in her DNA,” says Director Robb Paterson. “She describes the neighbourhood in its good days. It used to be a vibrant place where children would ride their bicycles down streets lined with small businesses. Yes, there is urban decay – businesses have closed and people have moved, mostly to New York City. Families have moved. Clara’s house is like a little oasis in the middle of the urban decay. 6
NOV/dec 2012
Even though there is massive change happening to the family, there’s no question, she won’t move. This neighbourhood is too much a part of her.” The fictional South Division Street is based on Seneca Street in Buffalo, NY, but keen observers will note that the photos surrounding the set look

“Her whole world is dying
around her”
– Ruth Nowak “When we looked at photos of Seneca Street in Buffalo, [we thought] it looked a little bit like Selkirk Avenue, and there is a similar cultural flavour, with lots of immigrants living in the neighbourhood,” Paterson says. “Both have also gone through similar changes. So many people have left and nothing has really taken their place. You see bursts of colour followed by emptiness, followed by another lively bit of architecture, a store or a restaurant, followed by bits of emptiness.” Those bursts of colour are likely people like Clara; business owners and residents who feel passionate about their neighbourhood and don’t want to abandon it. “Clara’s keeping the neighbourhood alive in any way she can,” Paterson says. “Her perspective on life may change, but there are certain things that will not change about her: the way she lives and where she lives, the day-to-day housekeeping, caring for her family, and baking for the neighbourhood.”
Around the holidays, or any time family gathers, food is a big part of the festivities. In Miracle on South Division Street, matriarch Clara is known for her Polish desserts. Here’s a handy guide to her specialties. CHRUSCIKI Crispy, sugar-dusted fried pastry, also known as Polish crullers or Angel Wings. They are commonly eaten before Lent or at Polish weddings. KISIEL A fruit soup made of sweetened juice and thickened by arrowroot, cornstarch or potato starch. Served either hot or cold, kisiel sometimes contains red wine and fresh or dried fruit. KOLACZKI Flaky pastries that resemble miniature foldovers. They can be round, square or diamondshaped and are traditionally filled with fruit, sweet cheese or nut paste. MAKOWIEC A baked roll of sweet yeast bread with a ground poppyseed filling. The filling is sweetened with sugar or honey and flavoured with rum, orange or lemon zest. RUM BABKA Spongy bread or cake traditionally baked in a Bundt pan. Some are filled with fruit and glazed. Others contain raisins or are drizzled in icing. Rum Babka is soaked in rum after baking, making it an adult-only treat. NOV/dec 2012

Curtain Calls
Miracle on South Division Street
by Tom Dudzick
This play is pure fiction, based on a “true” local legend. Back in busy, bustling 1950s Buffalo, a block and a half from my father’s tavern, there stood a barbershop. Next to the barbershop was a 20-foot-tall shrine to the Blessed Virgin Mary – a beautiful life-sized statue encased in wood, brick and glass. Its raison d’être? Well, legend had it that the Blessed Mother herself appeared to this barber and gave him a message for the world concerning world peace (she was in favour of it). Whether this miraculous materialization actually took place is still a matter of conjecture, but, regardless, there it stood, this monument to a man’s faith for us impressionable kids to gawk at and wonder about. The nuns at St. Pat’s told us not to waste our prayers or coins on the ersatz saint as the mighty Roman Catholic Church had no intention of ever sanctioning this hokey miracle. And that’s how the matter stood at the time I left the neighbourhood in 1964. Fast forward 45 years. My old neighbourhood has all but disappeared. Businesses and homes have succumbed to hard times and neglect. Its denizens have fled to the suburbs, and St. Pat’s is gone. But amidst the rubble of urban blight something still stands, dare I say, “miraculously?” You guessed it, the shrine to the Blessed Mother – spared from the wrecking ball by a promise from city hall, lovingly preserved by a handful of faithful residents, its creator long passed away. I made a pilgrimage to my old neighbourhood a couple of years ago. I stood before the shrine – newly Windexed, freshly flowered, its mail slot still active with donations and requests for miracles – and I thought to myself, “There’s a story here.” The real-life details of its origin were forever buried with the barber, but that didn’t stop my wheels from turning. I invented a family – the Nowaks of Buffalo’s East Side – amalgams of people I grew up with, some friends and family, and a little of myself sprinkled in. I enjoyed spending time with this oddball family, in my notebook and on my computer. But seeing them alive on stage, darned if I haven’t fallen head over bowling shoes for them. I hope they get under your skin as well.

Families & Miracles
The cast of Tom Dudzick’s Over the Tavern (John Hirsch Mainstage, 2007). Photo by Bruce Monk
“Good. I feel better then. We shouldn’t have secrets between us. Especially now.” – Clara, Miracle on South Division Street In Miracle on South Division Street, the Nowak family is well-known in their community for a remarkable miracle. As the audience learns, however, there’s a secret behind the family’s miracle. What happens when the truth is revealed? Do the Nowaks become the laughing-stock of the neighbourhood or does a greater truth come to light?
learn how the magic happens. For example, Friends of MTC (who donate $50 or more) are invited to attend a dress rehearsal, while members of the Director’s Circle meet a cast of actors at a private home reception. For a complete listing of all giving levels and the great donor benefits, visit the MTC website at www.mtc.mb.ca.
Actually, once the truth is revealed, the real miracle on South Division Street takes place. The Nowaks begin to understand who they really are and they grow closer to one another. Family truths are often like that – they bring people together, and a deeper sharing of love and support emerges.
The impact of your gift is significant. You help keep ticket prices accessible and contribute to MTC’s artistic growth. You provide educational opportunities for young people. You support the regional tour, which takes theatre to communities in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. And you allow MTC to hire the most talented local and international artists and artisans. No matter the size of your gift, you can be assured that it is put to good use.
Deep and meaningful relationships are also at the core of strong organizations. The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre is blessed with a strong family of subscribers, single ticket buyers and businesses who believe in our work, as well as passionate individual donors who help make the “miracles” happen on our stages. The transformation from script to full production is indeed miraculous, and MTC relies on the generosity of donors and friends to create these magical moments. You are invited to join our donor family by making a contribution to our Annual Fund and, by doing so, deepening your relationship with the theatre. As a donor, you receive benefits that will enhance your theatre experience – benefits that give you the opportunity to peek behind the curtain and 24

Education & Outreach
Make the most of your visit to MTC with our Outreach programming for audiences Discover more about the plays and actors and meet some of the behind-the-scenes staff with the following programs designed to enrich your theatre experience (all at no additional charge!):
Monday Mix Begin your night at the theatre by exploring a facet of the production you are about to see! Our Monday Mix evening at the John Hirsch Mainstage (Series 15e, the second Monday of each production’s run) offers the opportunity to learn more about theatre through pre-show chats with local theatre professionals. The half-hour session begins at 7:00 pm, and before one of the six Monday Mix evenings, a backstage tour will be offered at 6:30 pm. Visit www.mtc.mb.ca/mondaymix for this season’s lineup.
Talkbacks Join us after the show for an informative question-and-answer session with the actors. Audience members can inquire about the production, the play, life in theatre and more! Talkbacks are offered after Tuesday evening and Wednesday matinee performances at the John Hirsch Mainstage, and after Tuesday evening and Thursday matinee performances at the Tom Hendry Warehouse.
Facility Tours Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes? See first-hand how a production goes from conception to the stage by taking a backstage tour of MTC. Areas of the building typically visited include our carpentry shop, scenic art department, properties department, wardrobe department, storage facilities, backstage dressing rooms and performers’ green room, as well as the theatre itself.
For more information, contact MTC’s Outreach Manager at 204-934-0304 or email outreach@mtc.mb.ca. A tour group takes in the backstage spectacle at the John Hirsch Mainstage. Photo by Gaune Studios
