Ed’s Garage
Playwright’s Notes by Dan Needles Biologists tell us that the greatest diversity of species can be found in “edge” environments, where the savannah meets the rain forest or the field meets the fencerow. I take inspiration from one of these edge communities, where city meets country. Generally, I think of myself as more of a vacuum cleaner than a writer. I have gained a reputation as a humorist by roaming the side roads of rural Ontario for the last 50 years and writing down the witty things other people say. The family farm may be on the verge of extinction, but the farmers themselves haven’t all died. They’re just doing something else. The voices of the old farm community can still be heard in the old meeting places: the village diner, the church hall or the counter of one of the neighbourhood’s more loosely regulated automotive repair shops. This play, Ed’s Garage, pays homage to the wit and wisdom of those voices.

In this charming musical, we’re drawn into the lives of two extraordinary individuals when a young orphan writes monthly letters to the mysterious benefactor she calls “Daddy Long Legs”.
This thrilling musical takes us on a wild ride when a chamber choir dies in a roller coaster accident. Ride the Cyclone is their final recital where they celebrate their individuality while coming to terms with their untimely demise. GenerouslY sponsored BY

Curtain Calls
Ed’s Garage
Every winter, the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre takes a show on the road, bringing live theatre to communities in rural Manitoba and northwestern Ontario. This year, Ed’s Garage made the annual trek before landing on the John Hirsch Mainstage, and Stage Manager Karyn Kumhyr was there through it all. Having toured Manitoba extensively with other theatre groups and having accompanied MTC’s tour once before (Driving Miss Daisy, 2006), Karyn is no stranger to the road. From packing an entire show in a truck to meeting great people along the way, MTC’s regional tour is a unique endeavour with a set of rewards and challenges all its own.
How does the regional tour differ from a traditional show at MTC?
Oh, man, where to begin! It’s a completely different world. Every day on tour is a challenge: from our convoy of two vans and a truck navigating hundreds of kilometres of winter highways to coordinating our requirements with the local presenters who run the venues we perform in. How do you adapt the Ed’s Garage set to make it work in 23 different spaces? MTC has terrific designers, carpenters, painters and props makers who send us out with a show that can expand or compress to the size of the stage. The first thing we do when we walk into a venue is make a quick determination of how to best adapt our set to the space. For the actors, a line that takes them across the stage in one theatre has to get out in two steps in another – it’s quite an adjustment. We spent a week in rehearsals working on the largest set configuration and a week on the smallest to give them a chance to get used to adapting. What’s the secret to packing an entire show in a truck? The secret is our amazing tour technicians: Chris Hadley and Chris Thomson. They put an enormous amount of skill and energy into making this show work every day on the road. 8

What do you like about touring Manitoba and northwestern Ontario in the middle of winter? We had a long driving day north from Neepawa and it was after dark as we approached Flin Flon. The Northern Lights started dancing in the sky above us. The giant turtle in Boissevain, Pisew Falls near Thompson – we get the opportunity to experience so many fascinating places. What are the challenges? Unloading a five-ton truck full of equipment into a small community hall in freezing temperatures! Sometimes all of our crates won’t fit into the hall and we have to run back and forth from the stage to the parking lot for frozen props and tools. What were some of your favourite moments from this year’s tour? In Virden, some members of the local Arts Council made a lovely dinner of homemade soup and baked treats for us backstage after our set-up and sent us on our way after the show with little baggies of snacks for our hotel rooms. In Snow Lake, we spent time with members of the community who had a reception for us. The people we meet are wonderful and make this tour such a rewarding experience.

The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre kicked off its 35th consecutive regional tour on January 2, 2013. MTC expects that 4,000 audience members spread over 8,000 kilometres will see the play in 23 communities (as far north as Thompson, as far west as Virden, as far south as Gretna and as far east as Atikokan). A Manitoba winter can create some interesting challenges for a tour of this magnitude. Freezing temperatures mean finding set materials that won’t be damaged by the cold, and a severe winter storm can mean rescheduling the odd performance, but this company is up for anything the road throws at it. “Just like Ed, the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre inspires the community it serves with the annual regional tour,” said President and CEO of Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Winston Hodgins. “We congratulate MTC who, for 35 consecutive years, has opened the doors to professional live theatre, bringing access to new audiences. Along the way, they have made many friends and warm memories with theatre lovers of Manitoba and northwestern Ontario. As presenting sponsor, we are very proud to have been part of the journey for the past nine tours. Thank you to the dedicated artists, crew and staff, who have shared their talents over three decades and thousands of kilometres.” As we prepare this issue of Ovation, the tour has already visited 14 communities and received many standing ovations. EDUCATION & OUTREACH
During the run of Ed’s Garage, MTC will be asking for your support of the Jean Murray – Moray Sinclair Theatre Scholarships and Apprenticeships Fund. Established in 1964, the fund has provided more than 800 awards to over 400 Manitobans. The fund comprises two components: a scholarship division for students attending post-secondary theatre programs full-time and an apprenticeship division for emerging artists looking to gain experience in professional theatre. Last season, during the run of Shirley Valentine, you donated $21,509.80. Thank you for your support of up-and-coming local artists! From this collection, we allocated 17 scholarships to postsecondary students and three apprenticeships to young professionals.
Apprentices this season are Heidi Malazdrewich, Apprentice Director for Gone With the Wind; Garrett Rusnak, Apprentice Lighting Designer for Other People’s Money; and Casey Shapira, Literary Apprentice. The Jean Murray – Moray Sinclair Theatre Scholarships and Apprenticeships are unique in that they allow students to receive support from audiences. Recipients appreciate your personal investment in their future. Ushers will be coming around to collect donations to the fund. We thank you in advance for continuing to support Manitoba artists.
For more information on the Jean Murray–Moray Sinclair Theatre Scholarships and Apprenticeships or for an application package, please visit www.mtc.mb.ca/scholarship. If you prefer, you can contact the MTC Outreach Manager at 204-934-0304 or outreach@mtc.mb.ca.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH Two past scholarship recipients share what the Jean Murray – Moray Sinclair Scholarships and Apprenticeships meant for them.
Sharon Bajer is appearing onstage in MTC’s production of The Penelopiad. Seeing a production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at the Vancouver Playhouse in 1984 was the first professional production of a play I had ever seen. I remember not being able to leave my seat after it was over; I was so moved and shaken by the play. Two of the performers, Nicola Cavendish and Janet Wright, were then accosted by our drama teacher after the show to come and talk to us on our school bus. They were both so funny and articulate that I just wanted to be them and do what they did. Later that year a touring Shakespeare company from Washington came to our school and I was doubly floored that “Shakespeare” language could be so amazing. In high school I auditioned for a theatre school in Vancouver called Studio 58. I did Ophelia’s mad speech complete with plastic flowers and a very bad British accent. My acting teachers still love to remind me of how ridiculous my audition was. I think they let me in just because they couldn't stop laughing. I received my MTC scholarship well into my career as an actress because I wanted to learn how to become a director. The scholarship allowed me to assist other directors and analyze scripts which was great training and led me to participate in the Michael Langham Workshop in Classical Direction at the Stratford Festival where I assisted and directed my own projects for two seasons. Theatre is a collaborative profession. All the elements that make a great play – performance, design, direction, production and writing – have to come together to achieve the magic that can sometimes happen in a great show. I think anyone with a lifelong commitment to theatre will eventually become skilled in other areas. For me, acting, playwriting and directing all go hand in hand. I have been doing this for 25 years and for me “success” just means still having a love for great theatre after all this time.
Kathryn Ball is the Assistant Stage Manager for Ed’s Garage. I didn’t initially think about a career in theatre. I did a lot of acting in community theatre as a teenager and young adult but was never interested in pursuing that professionally. I went to university and got my commerce degree and was thinking about taking an arts administration course through Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton, just so I could stay involved in the arts. I got into stage management on a whim. I picked up a brochure for Theatre Production and just decided I would rather do that than arts administration. I fell in love with stage management and have never looked back! Theatre Production at Grant MacEwan is a hugely demanding course. It was recommended that we not work while in the program. I certainly didn’t and I don’t know how anyone would have found the time to do so. Between classes, studying, projects and the shows we were always working on, there was barely time to eat and sleep never mind work a part-time job! The scholarship helped me live out there while going to school and focusing on my studies. There are lots of great stage managers in this city and we all want to work. When February comes around and the theatres start to announce their seasons, we all pounce to try to fill up our next season. Had I not had my training I wouldn’t have known where to begin. We took courses in everything from carpentry to wardrobe to sound and lights so it gave me a base knowledge on the other aspects of backstage work as well. FEB/MAR 2013

in context In the introduction that precedes The Penelopiad, author Margaret Atwood calls the play “an echo of an echo of an echo of an echo of an echo of an echo.” The play is an adaptation of Atwood’s own novel, which is a reimagining of The Odyssey, the ancient Greek poem attributed to Homer. But the original echo goes back even further – to ancient mythology composed in the oral tradition, which encompasses information not included in Homer’s epic poem. In The Penelopiad, Penelope is given a chance to tell her side of the story – what she went through while her husband Odysseus was off having the adventures detailed in The Odyssey. A working knowledge of that epic poem is helpful going into The Penelopiad, but since it’s a massive tome with 12,110 lines of dactylic hexameter, we’ve provided a brief overview to help provide context for Penelope’s world.
² Odysseus fights for the Achaeans (Greeks) during the Trojan War. After a 10-year stalemate, it is his idea to build a large wooden horse with soldiers inside. The horse is left at the gates of Troy as a “gift” and the rest is history (or rather, mythology).
² Once Troy has fallen, Odysseus takes a number of men and a fleet of ships. They set sail and execute a hit-andrun raid on their enemies. As they are sailing away, their ships are caught in a storm and driven off course.
² The sailors come to the land of the Lotos-Eaters where they are introduced to a magical plant that makes all who eat it forget who they are. Odysseus must bring those who have eaten the lotos back onto the ships by force.
² Odysseus and his men come to Goat Island, where they enter the cave of a Cyclops named Polyphemos and are trapped when he comes home. Polyphemos eats some of the men before Odysseus persuades him to drink their wine. Once the Cyclops is drunk, Odysseus drives a white-hot, sharpened branch into his eye. The father of Polyphemos is Poseidon, the god of the sea. This causes some issues for Odysseus as he tries to work his way home.
² The sailors reach the home of the wind god Aeolus. As a gift, Odysseus is given a bag in which the winds are trapped. Odysseus aims for Ithaca, but while he is asleep, his men open the bag and the ship is blown off course again.
² The ship ends up in the city of Telepylos, which is peopled by cannibals. Many of Odysseus’ men are eaten before he escapes with just one ship left in his fleet.
² The remaining men find themselves on another island. A magical woman named Circe gives a drink to some of the men, who are immediately turned into swine. Odysseus convinces Circe to change them back, and he spends a year on the island as her lover.
² As they journey onward, Odysseus and his men pass the Sirens, whose beautiful singing lures sailors to their deaths. Odysseus orders his men to stop their ears with wax so they cannot hear the Sirens’ song, but he himself is tied to the mast with his ears unstopped. Thus, he becomes the only man to hear the song of the Sirens and live to tell the tale.
² After overcoming that obstacle, the group runs into another. Six of the men are eaten by Scylla, a sixheaded monster. The men were forced to sail under her cave while avoiding a whirlpool caused by another monster, Charybdis.
² Later, after leaving the island of Thrinacia, the ship is caught in a storm. Everyone dies except Odysseus, who ends up on the island of the nymph Calypso. Odysseus stays with Calypso for seven years. He becomes her lover, but chooses not to eat ambrosia and become immortal.
² Hermes, the messenger of the gods, arrives and orders Calypso to release Odysseus. The hero leaves on a new boat. Poseidon, still wrathful over Odysseus blinding his son, causes a storm that shipwrecks Odysseus on the island of the Phaeacians, who treat him kindly and furnish him for his journey back to Ithaca.
² Odysseus finally arrives home. He has been gone for 20 years. 18

Curtain Calls Q & A with
The Penelopiad Set & Costume Designer
Tamara Marie Kucheran Tamara Marie Kucheran studied theatre in university, thinking she’d be an actor, but in her third year, she sat in on a theatre design course and the next day, changed her major. For the little girl who lived in the dress-up box and loved doing dioramas in school, designing for the stage is a perfect fit. Working on The Penelopiad has been a special treat, as Margaret Atwood’s poetic and ethereal reimagining of the Odysseus myth from the perspective of his long-suffering wife provides lots of freedom to be creative. Just before the start of rehearsals, we sat down with Tamara to chat about her designs.
Q A
Given the abstract location of the play’s setting, what is the inspiration behind the set?
The Penelopiad is really a memory play. It is rooted in Hades and then the world develops around Penelope as she reflects on her life. With that in mind, and taking key clues within the script about Hades being cold and Penelope being in a place where her body doesn’t even exist anymore, I wanted it to be quite nebulous. Of course, there’s the connection with Odysseus and The Odyssey. That brought in a lot of ship imagery. The mast immediately came to mind with its overtones of graveyards and their crosses, specifically a mast on its side, off-kilter. That became my anchor – this idea of a mast floating in space. Working off that idea, I introduced the texture of rope and that whole idea of ship rigging. The other thing that is quite ethereal is the idea of the sails. It’s as though the This page: Kucheran’s sketch of Penelope’s costume. Opposite, top: Maquette of the Penelopiad set. Opposite, bottom: Sketch of Helen’s costume.

the penelopiad
What was your approach to designing the costumes? I start off with what is history and fragment from there. I knew we weren’t going to be absolutely historically correct, so I also looked at fashion and how fashion has twisted the classical lines. And I thumbed through this book called Goddess, which had some great ideas for draping fabric. Tracey and I decided on a modern interpretation of the very traditional lines. We chose knit fabric, which is not typical of the time, but it has to move and be durable for the type of movement the actors are going to do and it drapes beautifully. We are doing some dying of the fabric that has a suggestion of water. There’s a deep connection to water in this play.
sails have been blown off the mast and have become something else. Something “drape-y” and feminine. I wanted to give the lighting designer something to work with so he can put colour on them and all of sudden they’re a river, they’re blood, they’re a field of green. The fabric has that flexibility. I’m really looking forward to working with him to create the atmosphere. We also wanted to keep the space very open and shadowy so the actors come out of the darkness into the central playing area. Tracey, the director, is so brilliant with movement; the set gives her space to create shapes and places using the actors’ bodies as well. There’s going to be lots of times where they’re not just maids. They can take on architectural aspects or environmental aspects of where they are through body and movement.
One of the biggest challenges is how many characters the 10 maids take on. All those costumes had to be built on what the maids were wearing so they could be layered. When they are men, we focused on broadening the shoulders and padding the waist to square out the silhouettes a little more. When they are women, it was important for Tracey and me that we see the body shapes, which played into the choice of the fabrics. What has been your favourite part about working on the sets and costumes for the show? I think what’s so fantastic about this show is the poetry within the words. There are so many places you can jump to from there. As a designer, you’re not being dictated to. You take your clues and you build up from there. There are so many different interpretations, which gives you a lot of freedom. It really lets your imagination be free. I’m also looking forward to the partnerships, and how closely all disciplines are going to have to work together to put this on. Everyone’s in it together and it’s a real collaboration. That’s one of the most appealing things about working in theatre, the fact that you get to collaborate with people all the time. FEB/MAR 2013

Annual Giving
Rod Beattie and Douglas E. Hughes in Ed’s Garage at the Grand Theatre (London, Ontario). Photo by Claus Andersen
“There were lots of good counsellors long before there were certifications and degrees.” – Cassandra, Ed’s Garage Ed does more than change oil and balance tires at his garage; he offers advice and counsel to folks in his community. He does not have a college education or a list of letters behind his name: no qualifications or special training in psychology or human relations. He is simply able to reflect on the circumstances and events life has given him. And what’s more, Ed is able to share that wisdom with others. Every community needs an “Ed” and every community or neighborhood likely has one if we look carefully enough. Here at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre we also like to “share our wisdom.” During the run of Ed’s Garage, theatre patrons are asked to make a donation in support of the Jean Murray–Moray Sinclair Theatre Scholarships and Apprenticeships Fund. These programs offer educational experience to young artists who plan careers in theatre. In the recent production of Gone With the Wind, four of the actors, the Apprentice Director and three of the four-person stage management team were all past recipients. For actor Stephen Russell, “the scholarship and my training allowed me to do lots of things I wouldn’t have had the chance to otherwise, and afforded me the opportunity to go to Stratford and work with and learn from some of the best actors in the business.” We hope you consider donating to this worthy cause when the basket is passed at this performance. A gift in support of our Annual Fund helps us “share our wisdom” more broadly. The plays we offer each season entertain us, but they also raise our awareness of the world around us: theatre
makes us think. Our Monday Mix and Talkback programs give an opportunity for audience members to discuss our plays with theatre professionals. Facility tours offer a behind-the-scenes look at our production facilities and Play on Words, a partnership with the Winnipeg Public Library, allows MTC staff and artists to share thoughts and ideas with the general public. A gift to our Annual Fund supports all of these great programs and helps us nurture future generations of theatre lovers. Student subscriptions and tickets to MTC are subsidized to be more affordable. In addition to matinees that are open to the general public, MTC offers Theatre for Young Audiences (TFYA) matinees for selected productions. Every student-only performance is followed by a talkback session and online study guides are available to educators for selected MTC productions. The Backstage Pass program is a free high school program available annually to 25 students from grades 11 and 12 who have a keen interest in theatre. Each of the six sessions includes a workshop led by a member of Manitoba’s professional theatre community and attendance at a matinee performance at the John Hirsch Mainstage, followed by a talkback. As a donor to the annual fund, you become part of the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre donor family. Your gift will have a real impact and help us “share our wisdom” through the magic of live theatre and our many outreach programs. Good theatre is more than entertainment and great theatre inspires, teaches and educates. In the words of the late MTC co-founder Tom Hendry, “The arts… give a great city an image of its soul.”
