setting the stage Orphanages in the Early 20th Century by Jennifer Bazzell

THE MANY FACES OF DADDY LONG LEGS The novel Daddy Long Legs was first published by Jean Webster in 1912, aimed at a readership of young women, or “college girls.” In the past century, the book about orphan Jerusha and the mysterious benefactor who sends her to college has been used as raw material for a variety of stage, film and television adaptations.

Jerusha Abbott

of Daddy Long Legs is a young woman growing up in an orphanage in the early part of the twentieth century. At that time, the orphanage system in the United States was a firmly entrenched part of society. As opposed to today, where the preference is to put abandoned children into homes through foster care, historians estimate that in 1900 there were approximately 1,000 orphanages across the country, providing for 100,000 children. Life in an orphanage often came with many difficulties. Such institutions were often modelled on a belief that isolating “problem” people from the general public was beneficial to the individual in question, as well as a way to protect society. Some of the children in orphanages were not true orphans in any sense of the word: their parents were very much alive, but often suffered from a variety of poverty or sanitation-related issues that wreaked havoc on the lives of many people in the lower social strata of the day. Entrenchment in poverty or tuberculosis and other contagious diseases sometimes compelled parents to face a horrible choice: life on the streets with their children, sending their children to a workhouse or hoping for the best with an orphanage. Once placed in an orphanage, many children faced a regimented lifestyle that could include marching drills, strict discipline and rigorous chores and responsibilities. Throughout Daddy Long Legs, Jerusha expresses concern over her status

1952 1935 1919

Mary Pickford stars in a silent film adaptation of Daddy Long Legs, which seems to be more melodramatic than the original novel (beginning with the discovery of baby Jerusha in a trash can). As a college student, Jerusha writes a novel and the income allows her to repay her benefactor. 8

1931

Janet Gaynor portrays Jerusha in a musical film adaptation that sticks fairly close to the original story. One of the adaptors is Broadway playwright and popular Hollywood screenwriter S.N. Behrman.

The story of Daddy Long Legs becomes the basis of a musical for Shirley Temple – the enormously popular Curly Top. Jerusha Abbott is renamed Elizabeth Blair. Because Shirley Temple is much younger than the main character of Jean Webster’s original story, an older sister, Mary Blair, is added so there is a romantic plotline.

1938

The story moved to The Netherlands in the fourth film adaptation, where Jerusha Abbott becomes Judy Aalders and the benefactor, Jervis Pendleton, is translated to Albert van Woudenberg.

The first musical adaptation for the stage appears under the title Love from Judy. While this adaptation sticks to the basic plot, it adds two other pairs of lovers, an older and oftmarried confidante and an African-American character named Claudette. The music was written by Hugh Martin, who also composed Best Foot Forward, High Spirits and the film Meet Me in St. Louis.

as an orphan and keeps it secret from her classmates. During the time period in which Daddy Long Legs was written, the Eugenics Movement was taking place, which had a profound effect on the perception of orphans. Many respected people and even scientists of the day believed that orphans were more likely to suffer from “bad blood” than other children. Influential individuals of the day cautioned would-be adoptive parents from considering a child whose parentage was either unknown or in some way “defective.” Such social crusaders created a situation where children in orphanages faced a difficult task of finding a permanent home. The strikes against them were based solely on the fact that they were in an orphanage in the first place. When she wrote Daddy Long Legs, Jean Webster was involved in a movement for orphanage reform. Progressives of the age encountered many social ills with which they took issue, but abandoned children proved the most emotional rallying call. In 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt called for a conference on the care of “dependent children.” He also announced his belief that homes were the best place to raise children. Orphanages, already out of favour, continued to decline in status, as society moved more and more away from the idea of the institutional raising of children to home-based solutions.

Perhaps the most famous film adaptation is the musical starring Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron, with music and lyrics by John Mercer. This version takes a lot of liberties with the original story. The setting is moved to an orphanage in Paris. Astaire, as the mysterious Jervis Pendleton, has a chance encounter with orphan Julie Andre and decides to send her to school in New England. As in the original, Julie is required to write letters to her unknown benefactor.

1990

Daddy Long Legs crosses the ocean to become a Japanese anime television series. Again, it sticks quite closely to the original story, covering three years of Judy (Jerusha) Abbott’s life over 40 episodes.

The most recent film adaptation is a Korean film, which uses the basic premise but changes much of the structure of the original story. It sticks with the idea of a young woman helped through school by an unknown benefactor but then the orphan discovers that her patron is the young librarian at the television station where she works. He was in love with her at university but lost his memory from a fatal disease. The two fall in love again and spend as much time together as possible before his ultimate demise.

2009–2013

Rubicon Theatre Company, TheatreWorks and Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park join forces to develop and produce a new two-person musical based on the book. Written and directed by Tony and Olivier Awardwinner John Caird and composed by Tony nominee Paul Gordon, the show tours the United States before making a move to the West End in London in 2012. In 2013, the musical makes its Canadian debut at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. MAR/APR 2013

Daddy Long Legs Director’s Notes

but it takes her on an extraordinary voyage of intellectual and emotional discovery that mirrors her creator’s own journey in life. Daddy Long Legs author Jean Webster grew up in a privileged East Coast family, cushioned from the hardships that she put her heroine through – but it was her education at Vassar College in New York that made her aware of the terrible inequality between rich and poor, between men and women, between the educated and the ignorant, that so characterised American life in the early 20th century. By showing how an intelligent and imaginative young woman can grow, against all the odds, from an impoverished and potentially embittered orphan into a happy and successful young woman, Jean Webster also proposes that the journey has to be made in the opposite direction by those who are born into any kind of privilege.

by John Caird I am very happy to be returning to Winnipeg for the Canadian premiere of Daddy Long Legs. It’s been a long time since my last visit in 1950. I was two years old and accompanying my parents, as one does at that age, while they moved from Edmonton where I was born, to Montreal where we were to live for the next eight years.

I don’t remember anything more about that trip. I must have slept all the way through Ontario. But how prophetic my infant thoughts proved to be – for here I am back in Winnipeg just as I dreamed I would be! Daddy Long Legs is all about a journey. Jerusha Abbott’s story doesn’t begin quite as early as mine, and doesn’t involve so many miles of track, 10

MAR/APR 2013

Jean Webster has an association of her own with Canada that is both amusing and sad to contemplate. In another echo of her heroine’s predicament in Daddy Long Legs, Webster was for many years in love with a lawyer friend of her family’s who was unfortunately already married. In 1915, he was granted a divorce and Webster was able to marry him. They honeymooned in a remote cabin in the Quebec countryside, where they were visited by former president Theodore Roosevelt, who invited himself to gatecrash the honeymoon, saying, “I’ve always wanted to meet Jean Webster. We can put up a partition in the cabin.” History does not relate how the shared honeymoon worked out, but a year later Jean Webster died of childbirth fever at the age of 39, leaving behind a healthy baby daughter, ‘Little Jean,’ and a remarkable legacy of literary and charitable works that challenged the conventional political assumptions of the time and remain an important contribution to the battle for women’s and orphans’ rights to this day.

I vividly recall looking out of the window as we pulled out of Union Station and thinking: “I’ll be back one day. When I’ve grown up and become a theatre director, I shall write a musical adaptation of a charming epistolary novel and celebrate its Canadian premiere at a theatre yet to be founded in this beautiful city.”

Only by understanding the true power of charity, and the abiding necessity to help those amongst us who are powerless to help themselves, can we aspire to be human. Only by understanding the talents and needs of others can we earn the right to share in their journeys, to commiserate their failures and to delight in their triumphs.

Setting the Stage

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Ride the Cyclone may be about a sextet of teenagers’ fatal run-in with a travelling fair, but the musical itself shows no sign of crashing as it rides the roller coaster of a second national tour. The 2009 collaboration between playwright Jacob Richmond, composer Brooke Maxwell and Victoria’s critically lauded theatre company Atomic Vaudeville was first scheduled for just two weeks of performances, but co-director and artistic producer Britt Candide Small had hopes for an extended tour. She just didn’t know how far the encore would take Saint Cassian’s six saints. “When we first performed Ride the Cyclone in Victoria, we knew it was something special even if it was still rough in conception. People loved the characters and they loved the music – that’s more than half the battle. “We performed it a second time in Victoria after reworking it and that’s when Michael Rubenfeld, producer of the SummerWorks Festival, asked us to bring the show to Toronto.

We knew it would be expensive, but we wanted it to be seen outside Victoria.” Small went to her independent company’s board and – $25,000 of fundraising later – the musicians and cast were on a plane to the festival. “That really changed everything,” Small says. “The Globe and Mail wrote a great review, we won two festival awards and people started talking about the show – inside and outside the theatre community. A Canadian producer got involved and we were able to do a three-city tour that proved Ride the Cyclone could be integrated into a theatre company’s season and work inside the regional theatre model.” Rave reviews from critics calling Cyclone the next Drowsy Chaperone have encouraged Small, though she’s hesitant to set the bar as high as the Great White Way. “Who knows what the future of the show will be? Sure, Broadway would be great, but right now I’m just happy the show has a life travelling across Canada!

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

“Comparisons happen because it’s really tough to create a musical. They aren’t cheap and it’s not like we’ve been in the best economic situation to develop a new show. But sometimes you just do it, you are tenacious. People in the theatre community have been very supportive. It gave us the courage to keep going.”

An extended trip with a team Small describes as “a gang of misfits” has given the artists random chances to collaborate on other performances. Nearly every member of the Cyclone team plays instruments, letting them leap onstage for cabaret evenings and comedy nights in the cities they’ve visited.

Their travels have allowed the diverse group to bring the show to family and friends across the country. Small’s grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins will be in the theatre when the show crashes onto the Tom Hendry Warehouse stage. The Cyclone team has gone dogsledding outside Whitehorse and watched Vancouver Aquarium’s whales.

“We’re hoping to participate in other people’s open mic nights in Winnipeg. We try to get engaged in the wider community wherever we go.”

They’ve even had the chance to push their luck. “Yesterday the cast went to West Edmonton Mall and rode a waterslide called the Cyclone, which features a ‘loop-de-loop.’ Yeah… I was kind of upset when they told me. But they all came back with their heads, so it’s fine.”

For Small, the darkly funny musical stays fresh each performance by creating a temporary, intimate community. “I think this play is about individuals and community; what the individual means in community. It certainly feels like that when we perform it. One of the beauties of theatre is that when you make it consciously theatrical, it embraces the room you find yourself in.”

Ride the Cyclone: A Musical The Saint Cassian Chamber Choir has wowed people in Uranium for well over three generations with their mixture of eclectic music and solid vocals. They were invited to “Uranium Literacy Week” to perform the original song “I’m Hooked on Books,” as well as invited to perform a medley of Broadway hits called “The Mad Wicked Miserable Phantom Cats from Saigon” at the opening of a local Sammy Peppers. This year, the Saint Cassian Chamber Choir participated in the Kiwanis International Classical Choir competition, singing the classic “One” from A Chorus Line. Although they were the only ones competing in their category, they came in second place, as it was explained that “One,” although a classic in some circles, is not considered Classical music. Oh well, better luck next year!

Thank You! Each season, MTC makes production equipment upgrades and purchases to ensure that our facilities are able to deliver exceptional performances for our audiences. The Winnipeg Foundation has assisted with these purchases over the years. In the current season, with the help of the foundation, MTC replaced our backstage headset communication system at the John Hirsch Mainstage just in time for the complex scene changes of A Few Good Men. The Foundation’s support also assisted us with the purchase of a digital mixing board at the Tom Hendry Warehouse. The sound board’s capabilities as a mixer for live musical performances are fully utilized this season for Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins and our final production of the Warehouse season, Ride the Cyclone: A Musical. The community will benefit from this new equipment as it helps our many rental partners, including independent theatre producers, dance shows and community events. Thank you to The Winnipeg Foundation for their generous support of MTC.

The Asper Foundation is a private philanthropic organization that undertakes and develops major initiatives in the areas of Jewish charity as well as culture, education, community development and human rights locally, nationally and internationally. Atomic Vaudeville

is composed of a collective of writers, performers and musicians supported by the leadership of Artistic Directors Jacob Richmond and Britt Candide Small. The company’s mission is to redefine performance in their community by creating a living and modern theatre environment which combines a variety of performance disciplines and stimulates dialogue with the audience, embracing the concerns and sensibilities of an undefined generation. A Victoria-based performance company that has produced new work locally, nationally and abroad, Atomic Vaudeville’s mandate is to encourage and support the professional development of new and emerging local actors, writers, musicians, artists and performers through: • An annual season of Atomic Vaudeville performances in Victoria; • The commissioning, development and public performance of plays and works by emerging local writers, composers and performing artists; • Sponsorship of and/or participation in Canadian and international festivals in order to showcase new, contemporary, local work. The company was founded by Small and Richmond in 2004 with the production of a monthly cabaret show that has become a beloved cult hit in Victoria, BC. The shows are a short-form mélange of theatre, music, song, dance, puppetry and sketch; an adoption of the rough vaudeville form reconceived for the present age, which attracts an audience hungry for live, entertaining and relevant theatrical art. The show has won numerous local awards including the Monday Magazine 2008 Biggest Big Winner Award, as chosen by the community. Since its inception, AV has produced over 60 cabaret shows in Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto and Bellingham and worked with over 200 local and visiting artists. As well as the ongoing cabarets, AV has been producing an annual summer Sweatshop Festival since 2006 in Victoria. The multi-disciplinary festival showcases local and visiting artists in new and experimental shortform work with a mandate to create a condensed creative space for artists across various disciplines and communities to perform and interact. The ongoing cabaret and festival programming of the company both supports and is informed by the full production of more refined and developed work; work that has established a reputation of excellence for the company nationally. Atomic Vaudeville has produced the plays The Qualities of Zero, Legoland, Ride the Cyclone, The History of Everything and Circus Fire in Toronto, Seattle, Bellingham, Prague, New York, Victoria and Vancouver. Atomic Vaudeville has also been commissioned to create new work for the Victoria Erotica Film and Arts Festival, the Monday Magazine Awards, the Victoria Art Gallery, the Luminara Festival, the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival and the BC Film Commission Conference. The company was incorporated as a non-profit company in January 2008.

Education & Outreach

Backstage Pass is a free high school subscription program that takes place over six Wednesdays during the academic year. Applications are open to all students in grades 11 and 12 with a keen interest in the performing arts, giving them an opportunity to take an in-depth look at theatre. No experience is necessary – just a love of theatre and willingness to learn and have fun! Each session starts with a morning workshop tailored to our current John Hirsch Mainstage production and is led by a member of Manitoba’s professional theatre community. Past topics have included the audition process, stage combat, dialects, set design, playwriting and more. After lunch (which is generously provided by Subway), students attend the matinee performance in the John Hirsch Theatre. The day concludes after our post-show Talkback. “The Backstage Pass program offers the invaluable experience of working with and learning from industry professionals and then seeing professionals in action live on stage shortly after. Participants really get a good perspective on the inner workings of a theatre company as well as the work that goes into producing each show.” – Elliot Lazar, 2011/12 BSP participant.

planned giving

“Charity, O Charity, I cannot believe how easier it is to give than to let yourself receive.” – Jervis, Daddy Long Legs In Daddy Long Legs, wealthy benefactor Jervis offers financial assistance to the young orphan Jerusha to help her obtain a college education. In the process, Jervis discovers the true meaning of giving and in a very real way: he gains more from his philanthropy than he gave. There are times when we all want to be philanthropists and give back, but few of us are as wealthy as Jervis. We want to help our favourite charity but we believe our resources are limited. In this case, a planned gift may be a good option to consider. Made from your accumulated assets, a planned gift allows you to realize your philanthropic objectives while maximizing financial and tax benefits. It is any gift made with foresight that provides a mutual benefit to the donor and to the charitable organization. For MTC, there are tremendous benefits derived from planned gifts, like having adequate resources to serve our community in the years to come and building a solid financial base to support future artistic excellence. For the donor there are advantages as well. A bequest of money, a percentage of an estate or a gift of real estate or personal property entitles your estate to a tax credit, thereby reducing tax liability.

Life insurance is another excellent form of planned giving. By making MTC the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy, the premium paid is considered a charitable donation and entitles you to a receipt for income tax purposes. It’s also possible to donate an existing policy and receive a tax receipt for the policy’s cash value. For a single person, the value of RRSPs or RIFs becomes taxable income at death. This can result in considerable income tax cost to the estate. If the RRSP or RIF has been donated to a charity such as MTC, their value is tax-free. Of course, it is important to consult your financial advisor when considering the benefits of such decisions. By making a planned gift and informing MTC of your decision, you become a member of MTC’s Founders’ Circle and receive recognition for your generosity and vision. In the play Ride the Cyclone, the Amazing Karnak is a mechanical fortune-telling machine that can predict the exact cause, time and place of someone’s death, an admittedly “rather morbid function.” Indeed, many consider planned giving in the same light, rather than thinking about all the positive, mutual benefits of such a gift. In the end, a planned gift is a great way to both give and receive. Information about our Planned Giving program and the Founders’ Circle is available in the lobby or from MTC’s Development Office. You are also encouraged to contact your legal and financial counsel in order to make an informed decision and consider your best options.
