SETTING THE STAGE A POOKA PRIMER If a friend or family member introduced you to a six-foot-tall rabbit named Harvey whom you could neither see nor hear, you might question his or her sanity. But as it turns out, creatures like Harvey have a rich history in Irish myth. Harvey is a pooka, a fairy spirit in animal form from old Celtic mythology. Wise but mischievous shapeshifters, pookas have the power of human speech and are known to strike up conversations with strangers, giving them advice or playing innocuous pranks. Pookas are said to be great listeners, and are often able to get people to divulge secrets and reveal their innermost feelings. They also have an uncanny ability to prophesize. A pooka never says goodbye – they mysteriously disappear, leaving the person they were talking to a little confused and wondering if what transpired between them was real. Playwright Mary Chase’s mother came over from Ireland with her four brothers when she was a teenager. A first-generation American, Chase had fond memories of the Irish folktales her uncle would tell her when she was growing up.

HARVEY “I think that’s always had an imprint on my work,” she told CBC Radio in 1981. “I have to say I’m very grateful for that heritage.” The myth of the pooka is alive and well in Ireland, where superstitions and customs regarding the creature are still observed by some. It’s always best to stay on the good side of a pooka so they don’t retaliate and cause mischief – like destroying crops and scattering livestock. Pookas are associated with Samhain, the Celtic festival that falls on October 31 and coincides with the harvest. Irish farmers are known to leave a small part of their crops on the field as “the pooka’s share.” Children are told not to eat fruit touched by the first frost because the pooka has spat on it, making it inedible. Rain falling on a sunny day – a common occurrence in Ireland – is a sign the pookas will be out that night. In Harvey, the legend of the pooka comes to life as Harvey interacts with Elwood and surprises even those characters who don’t believe he exists.

HARVEY debuted as a musical in Toronto in 1981. It was also the winner of the 1945 Pulitzer Prize. What? A comedy about a guy with a rabbit as a best friend wins the Pulitzer? In a year in which the competition included The Glass Menagerie? It seems hard to believe. And yet, believing is what Harvey is all about, so let’s go down that rabbit hole and begin to look at what lifts this story beyond a simple comedy.

FORMER NEWSPAPER REPORTER AND SUCCESSFUL playwright Mary Chase had decided she would stop writing plays after her latest one flopped on Broadway. Happily married and raising a family in Denver, her days included walking her young boys to school each day. And each day they would pass a woman going to work in the opposite direction. She knew the woman was a widow, with a son in the air force. One day she heard that the woman’s son had been killed in action. In an interview with CBC, Mary Chase explains: “That wasn’t what jolted me so much as the fact that in a week or 10 days, I saw the woman leaving the apartment house, going a little more slowly, to catch the bus to go back to her old job. I couldn’t endure it. She began to haunt me. And the question began to haunt me. Could I ever think of anything to make that woman laugh again? So I dreamt about her, she followed me up and down the stairs, she was in my thoughts, and I kept looking for ideas and rejecting them. I knew that she wouldn’t laugh about any comedy about sex; I knew she wouldn’t laugh about any comedy about money or politics. Then one morning I awoke at 5:00 and I saw a psychiatrist walking across our bedroom floor followed by an enormous white rabbit. And I knew then I had it.” This image, of course, was the genesis for the comic hit that ran on Broadway for four and a half years, has had countless productions since, became a beloved Hollywood movie, and even 8

At first, the play seems very simple indeed: a man’s insistence that his best friend is a six-foot-tall rabbit infuriates and embarrasses his social-climbing sister, who decides to do something about it once and for all. As she and others attempt to find a solution for Elwood and his unique companion, we begin to see how Elwood is possibly the most normal and human character, and it is everyone else who seems crazy, shallow and obsessed with all the wrong things. Yes, he sees an invisible rabbit, but he also sees the best in whoever is in front of him. And he has an uncanny ability to fully experience each moment with pleasure and joy – something that is ultimately admired and envied by some, ignored or feared by others. Then, as the evening unfolds, the invisible Harvey’s mischief shifts slightly. Suddenly this is no longer a simple story about one eccentric man’s hallucinations, but something that veers onto a different level of reality, making us wonder: what exactly is Harvey, who can see him and why, and what is he trying to do to this crazy group of people? In one of her final interviews, Mary Chase says that as a child, she “had sensed that there was in human beings – rich, poor, criminal, nice – a common denominator. That if you could once reach it, you were in a wonderful country.” It appears that this common denominator is what Harvey and Elwood choose to see in people, and the wonderful country is the place where they choose to dwell. It is also this wonderful country that the original audiences, the Pulitzer committee, and millions since have recognized – a place of purity, happiness, generosity of spirit and utmost acceptance of others. It’s a wonderful place that Mary Chase says lives inside all of us, no matter who we are. It’s a place where Harvey invites us to go, if we can only put aside our silly obsessions and misplaced priorities, and believe it exists. Let’s hop to it and go there now.

Mary Chase Playwright

Mary Chase (1906–81) was raised in Denver, Colorado. Before becoming a successful playwright, Chase kicked off her career as a newspaper journalist. Writing society pages and the text for flapper-era cartoons, Chase was described by colleagues as “pioneering” and “witty.” She had three sons with husband and fellow reporter Robert Chase. Her first play, Me Third, was produced at Denver’s Baker Federal Theatre as a part of a government initiative to ease unemployment during the Great Depression. Harvey opened on Broadway in 1944 and ran for 1,775 performances. Capitalizing on the play’s success, Chase wrote the screen adaptation, receiving an unprecedented $1 million from Universal Studios for the film rights. In 1981, while working on the musical adaptation, Say Hello to Harvey, Chase had a fatal heart attack, and was buried in Jefferson County, Colorado.

A Christmas Story is adapted from Bob Clark’s beloved Christmas film by Philip Grecian, who wrote It’s a Wonderful Life: A Radio Play, a great success at the Mainstage four years ago. This uproarious comedy takes a nostalgic look at childhood, and little Ralphie Parker’s longing to find a Red Ryder B.B. gun under the Christmas tree. A Christmas Story is helmed by MTC’s Associate Artistic Director Robb Paterson, who is no stranger to crowd-pleasing holiday fare. Robb played Bob Cratchit in A Christmas Carol – The Musical and directed It’s a Wonderful Life: A Radio Play and White Christmas at the Mainstage. Robb’s research for A Christmas Story took him to Cleveland; he toured the Parker family house where exterior scenes were filmed, although the rest of the shooting was done in Canada. In 2012, the film was chosen by the Library of Congress to be preserved in the National Film Registry of culturally significant films, and the play has become a holiday standard in many cities, giving audiences yet another way to spend Christmas with the Parker family. Invisible, Loyal Friends “If Harvey happens to take a liking to people he expresses himself quite definitely. If he’s not particularly interested, he sits there like an empty chair or an empty space on the floor.” – Elwood P. Dowd In Mary Chase’s play Harvey, Elwood P. Dowd has an imaginary friend by the name of Harvey. As imaginary friends go, Harvey is a bit unusual since he is a six-foot-tall white rabbit. But in many ways, Harvey is a good friend. He is a constant companion to Elwood and is loyal, supportive and generous. As you might expect, Elwood’s family is worried about his state of mind. After all, how many people have a human-sized rabbit friend? Nonetheless, Elwood seems to be happy and well-adjusted. The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, like Elwood P. Dowd, is fortunate to have many loyal, supportive and generous friends who are not generally seen. They are not exactly invisible and they are certainly not big rabbits, but they are enormously significant. This unseen group of MTC friends is made up of donors and supporters. And like Harvey, when our donors, sponsors and patrons take a liking to us, they express themselves quite definitely. If, on the other hand, they are not particularly interested, the result is empty seats and quieter spaces at our two stages. The cost of presenting quality programming is shared by many members of the MTC family. Ticket sales to subscribers and casual buyers contribute about 50% of our family budget. The rest comes from sponsors, grants, and corporate and individual donors. Although these may be the “unseen” supporters and friends, they make a definite impact.

Co-creators Alon Nashman and Paul Thompson are bringing their electric exploration of MTC founding Artistic Director John Hirsch to the Tom Hendry Warehouse. Hirsch played to great acclaim at the Stratford Festival in 2012 and the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013. While the original production incorporated Hirsch’s professional achievements and personal connections in Winnipeg, Alon and Paul wanted to deepen their research to ensure the MTC version is the fullest yet. So for a week in April, they visited Winnipeg in search of the man who lived passionately and without compromise. In addition to their intensive research on-site at MTC, the team visited the home where John grew up, spoke with people who knew him and explored his old neighbourhood. In the spirit of improvisation, Alon appeared as himself and sometimes as John. Fortunately for us, Alon and Paul invited videographer/photographer Leif Norman along so we could get a glimpse of Hirsch in the making. We encourage you to visit the Hirsch section of the MTC website to watch Leif’s video. Needless to say, we’re thrilled to welcome Hirsch home to MTC. While there is something very modern about the subject matter in David Ives’ Venus in Fur,

the play is actually adapted from an 1870 novella by Austrian writer Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch.

While Sacher-Masoch wrote other work, Venus in Furs is by far his most well-known and his only novel to be translated into English. His most enduring legacy is nonliterary: the power play and submissive behaviours found in his book and mirrored in his life gave birth to the term masochism – putting the ‘M’ in S&M.

In Venus im Pelz or Venus in Furs, an unnamed narrator has a dream of the goddess Venus wrapped in furs, who speaks about how the cruel nature of women increases men’s desire. Confused about his dream, the narrator talks to his friend Severin, who introduces him to Confessions of a Suprasensual Man, a manuscript Severin claims rid him of his desire to be dominated by women. The story is about a pleasure-seeking nobleman, also named Severin, who is infatuated with a woman named Wanda and wants to be dominated by her. He asks Wanda to make him her slave and encourages her to play out his fantasy, often using whips on him while dressed in only a fur coat. While reluctant at first, Wanda soon embraces the idea, finding new and creative ways to humiliate and degrade her charge, while increasingly despising Severin for allowing her to do these things to him. The tale comes to a climax with Wanda and Severin taking a trip to Florence. On the journey, Wanda has Severin dress and act like her servant, which includes staying in the filthy slave quarters when not servicing her every whim. Once in Florence, Wanda meets a man described as an Adonis and she brings him into their game. When Wanda’s new lover humiliates Severin, he no longer feels the desire to be submissive. Sacher-Masoch’s novel is autobiographical in part, as the author himself entered into a contract with a mistress in 1869, giving her

CURTAIN CALLS Director’s Notes by Christopher Brauer When I started working in the theatre (which actually wasn’t all that long ago – the ‘80s weren’t that long ago, were they?) there was a stillprevalent sense that at the top of the theatrical food chain was the director. The director was a person whose power was absolute. I can remember being told by one such authoritarian régisseur that directors should always be 10 minutes late for rehearsal – to show everyone who was boss. Seriously. And, while I think this polarized notion has mostly gone the way of the dodo (as it should), it’s easy to understand why people would create this paradigm and why shadows of it might still persist. I mean, think about the audition process: I, as the director, am the gatekeeper to employment, income, and possible “discovery” or career advancement for some actor. I sit in a room, and a steady stream of talented people come in to present their take on a scene, I work with them a bit (15–20 minutes, tops), then send them on their way. And, let’s face it – these actors really want the job. Especially if they’re young, they’re really prepared to jump through nearly any hoop I might hold out for them. So, I do this for a few days in town, then perhaps travel out of town. Then I decide. That’s a lot of power.

VENUS IN FUR However, Masoch’s infamous work has been roundly criticized by real-world S&Mers. The main criticism is that the characters in Masoch’s work (like de Sade’s dark visions) get pleasure from dehumanizing, or victimizing the objects of their desire. And that isn’t at all how real-world S&M plays out. As titillating/amusing as the image of the heartless, whip-cracking, PVC-clad “master” might be, the truth is – and it’s always like this, isn’t it? – a lot more complicated. Because, for all the power dynamics that are played with in S&M, that interplay is rooted in genuine caring, negotiation, equal and honest communication, mutual trust and – yes – love. And I think this leads us to the clever thing that Ives manages to ultimately unveil in this play. That playing out the power games, whether it’s between director and actress or between dom and sub, is fun and sexy and darkly exciting. But in the end, whatever the difference in power, the object of your desire/artist you are evaluating is your partner, not your victim. And if you treat them poorly, you might regret what you unleash.

In the play, Vanda says, “You don’t have to tell me about sadomasochism – I’m in the theatre!” It’s certainly easy to see how someone could suggest that there’s a parallel between the director/actor relationship and the dominant/submissive partners in an S&M relationship. Which is, of course, the game that David Ives plays in Venus in Fur. In using the Leopold von Sacher-Masoch novella Venus in Furs as his jumping off point for the play, Ives has made a sly choice. On the one hand he has chosen a seminal kinky text: without Masoch we wouldn’t have Masochism. (Isn’t it interesting that both Sadism and Masochism are named for literary figures?) Really, Venus was the Fifty Shades of Grey of the late-nineteenth century. Certainly Thomas, the director character in the play, is deeply inspired by Severin (Masoch’s main character) – a man who demands to be dominated, who demands to have whatever passion is in him released, and is relentless in accomplishing this pursuit. And Thomas is equally demanding as a director. 24

David Ives is perhaps best known for his evening of one-act plays, All in the Timing (he has been included in the “Best Short Plays” series seven times), and for Venus in Fur, which was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play. His plays include New Jerusalem: The Interrogation of Baruch de Spinoza, The School for Lies (adapted from Molière’s The Misanthrope), The Liar (adapted from Corneille), Time Flies and Is He Dead? (adapted from Mark Twain). He has also translated Feydeau’s A Flea in Her Ear and Yasmina Reza’s A Spanish Play. A former Guggenheim Fellow in playwriting and a graduate of the Yale School of Drama, he lives in New York City.
