SETTING THE STAGE Inspired by short stories and the movie of the same name, A Christmas Story is set in 1938 in the fictional town of Hohman, Indiana and is based on Jean Shepherd’s childhood recollections. It is a memory play that explores a child’s perspective on Christmas, family, friends and life in small town middleAmerica during the latter stages of the Great Depression. Because it is based on recollections of childhood, not only are the main characters children, but reality is seen through a child’s eyes. Adult Ralph, the narrator, tells the audience how young Ralphie felt at the time the events were happening as well as how he now sees these same events. Adult Ralph is able to find humour in the everyday adventures of an American family preparing to celebrate Christmas.

Glossary Air rifle/BB gun A replica rifle that uses air pressure to shoot small round pellets or BBs. Although an air rifle does not have enough air pressure to kill or seriously injure someone, you could shoot your eye out. Black Bart Full name Charles Earl Bowles, “Black Bart” was a notorious outlaw of the American Old West. In his fantasies, Ralphie uses his Red Ryder air rifle to defeat Black Bart and his gang. Decoder ring A device that allowed a person to encrypt or decipher a secret coded message. The decoder ring allowed Ralphie to participate in the adventures of his favourite radio show. SETTING THE STAGE

A CHRISTMAS STORY

Playwright’s Notes by Philip Grecian In the early 1970s Playboy magazine published Jean Shepherd’s short stories about his Indiana childhood. I loved them, but even better than that, my children loved them, and insisted upon them as bedtime stories. Shepherd’s stories did not appear in every issue, and so when one did (after months of waiting and disappointment), it was a family event. One evening, during the Christmas season of 1983, we decided to take the children to a film. There was a new one at the mall theatre about which we knew nothing; it was called A Christmas Story. We sat in the darkness as the coming attractions ended. The feature began, and these words appeared: “A film from the works of Jean Shepherd.” We jumped. Our Jean Shepherd? Yes! Our Jean Shepherd! There on the screen

were some of the stories we’d loved, woven together into a cinematic whole, narrated by Jean Shepherd! Our Jean Shepherd! As it turned out, everybody’s Jean Shepherd. A Christmas Story was an instant American Christmas classic. Sixteen years later, Dana Wolworth, my editor at Dramatic Publishing, asked me, “Have you ever seen the movie A Christmas Story? I think it’d make a great play.” By this time I owned the book, In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash, which collected the stories that had been so much a part of our lives. I didn’t wait for the contracts to be signed, I began writing. I was three-quarters of the way through the first draft when all signatures were on the dotted lines. I could hardly wait for Shep (by this time I was referring to him by the nickname he preferred) to read the play. Two days later, Jean Shepherd died. I mourned his loss. We had never met, but he had helped me raise my children. He was an unbilled family member, a favourite uncle. He never got to read the play. That weighed heavily on me. But as I finished the first draft and moved on to the second, polished draft, I found myself asking more and more, “Would Shep do it this way? What would he think of this?” I read the original stories over and over again, trying to capture Jean Shepherd’s rhythms, the way he puts his words together. Sometimes, writing dialogue, I fancied that he stood over my shoulder, giving me pointers. Often, in my imagination, I heard that wonderful laugh of his when I made a scene work particularly well. So thank you to Dramatic Publishing, thank you, Dana, my friend and editor, and thank you, Jean Shepherd, the dear friend I never met. Ralphie Parker will ever continue in his quest for that Red Ryder 200-shot Carbine Action Range Model Air Rifle, on the printed page, on the screen and on countless stages. And you will live on.

Jean Shepherd (1921-1999) was a master storyteller. He took bits and pieces from his own life to weave tales of the joy, humour, intrigue and angst of growing up. His youth in Hammond, Indiana and his adventures in the Army Signal Corps were both fertile sources for his tales. For almost three decades, he told these stories to eager radio audiences, in Cincinnati from 1950 to 1954 and on WOR in New York from 1956 to 1977. His producer at WOR, Leigh Brown, would later become his wife and collaborator, and help pen the screenplay – along with director Bob Clark – of his most popular and enduring work: the film A Christmas Story (1983). Shepherd, no stranger to performance, also narrated the film. Shepherd began his entertainment career in Chicago as a performer at the Goodman Theatre, later performing in nightclubs and revues in addition to his

ARTISTS radio broadcasts. In the 1970s he took his talents to television for PBS. He wrote articles for several magazines, including Playboy and Omni, and was an early contributor to The Village Voice. ANNUAL GIVING

What we want for Christmas “What I want for Christmas is a legendary official Red Ryder 200-Shot Carbine Action Range Model Air Rifle with a compass and this thing which tells time built right into the stock.” – Ralphie Parker Oh, how Ralphie Parker dreamed of that BB gun! He asked his parents; he asked Santa Claus; he wrote a persuasive school paper; and he stuffed the family mailbox with Red Ryder ads. But, alas, almost everyone told him, “You’ll shoot your eye out!” Here at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre there are many individuals, like Ralphie, who are also asking for a very special gift this holiday season. For example, here is the request from the folks who manage the budgets and who know too well that only half of MTC’s revenue comes from ticket sales: “What we want for Christmas are legendary, official and generous donations from loyal MTC patrons who value the arts and who wish to express their love for the theatre in a powerful and significant way.” On further checking, we discovered that others at MTC want the very same special gift for the holidays! People like: • The Outreach Department, who look forward to providing educational opportunities and discounted tickets for young people, as well as special events and programs such as the Talkback series, Play on Words and Backstage Pass; • Those who are taking Miracle on South Division Street on the Regional Tour to more than 25 communities in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario; • The good folks who bring us the Master Playwright Festival and the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival; • Artisans who build our wonderful sets, props and costumes; • Actors from near and far who bring to life over 250 performances annually on the John Hirsch and Tom Hendry stages. What a coincidence! And to think, all legendary, official and generous donors also get great benefits in return, depending on the level of their gift. *ALL FULL PRIORITY SUBSCRIPTION PACKAGES INCLUDE ONE FREE EXCHANGE FOR EACH PRODUCTION. A $5 PER TICKET SERVICE CHARGE FOR SAME-DAY EXCHANGES AND/OR UPGRADE CHARGES TO HIGHER-PRICED SEATING MAY APPLY. SORRY, EXCHANGES NOT AVAILABLE FOR AN ALTERNATE PLAY OR MISSED PERFORMANCE.

With a $75 donation to the Annual Fund, donors become Star Patrons and receive benefits at the Friend level, plus their ticket exchange fees will be waived for the 2013/14 season!* Also, as part of the 2013 federal budget, the First Time Donors Super Credit (FTDSC) gives first-time donors and those who have not claimed a charitable donation in the last five years an extra 25% on their tax credit for charitable gifts. The FTDSC is applicable to any single cash donation of up to $1,000 made by an individual or couple between now and 2017. Goodness, so many benefits for MTC and for our donors! And no one is going to warn us about shooting our eye out. But MTC’s 2013/14 season is so great, so exciting and so fabulous, it might just knock your socks off!

Donate by mail, phone or online at www.mtc.mb.ca. For more information, contact Garth in the Development Office at 204-956-1340 ext. 240.

Fresh adaptation breathes new life into Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre “Literature, meet theatre.” – BOOK-IT THEATRE

JAN. 8 – FEB. 1

On the strength of literary classics such as Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, the Brontë sisters have a following that has reached near cult status, which is ironic considering how many of us can’t seem to keep them straight. Wuthering Heights – Emily. Agnes Grey – Anne. Jane Eyre – Charlotte. Thanks to its omnipresence on school curricula and book club lists, Jane Eyre has retained a storied place on the worldwide literary scene. Charlotte’s romantic novel has inspired a myriad of film, radio and stage adaptations, and even one fan website called ‘The Enthusiast’s Guide to Jane Eyre Adaptations’. For years, MTC had been searching for the perfect Jane Eyre for our audience and we knew we’d found it with Julie Beckman’s fresh and original adaptation for Seattle’s Book-It Theatre. Book-It Theatre’s mission is “to transform great literature into great theatre.” Their singular approach incorporates the novel’s original narrative without using a physical narrator. Instead, all the characters tell the story. The result is anything but a sleepy period piece. Needless to say, we’re thrilled to share our own production of Julie Beckman’s exciting adaptation with you.

About

John Hirsch 1930–45 | Born in Hungary to a cultured, upper middle-class Jewish family. After the Nazi invasion of Hungary, he lived with his grandfather and other Jews in the Budapest ghetto and suffered greatly during the war years. His grandfather did not survive the war and Hirsch learned his mother and brother had perished in Auschwitz and the Nazis had executed his father.

1947 | Came to Canada with the help of the Canadian Jewish Congress. Hirsch insisted on Winnipeg because its geographical location made it feel safe from potential invasions. Arriving in Winnipeg, Hirsch was taken into the home of Alex (Sasha) and Pauline Shack. He remained close to the Shacks for the rest of his life.

1949 | Enrolled at the University of Manitoba and became an active member of the Winnipeg performing arts scene through the Winnipeg Little Theatre (WLT). He also toured a puppet show around Manitoba schools through the Children’s Theatre, and produced musicals for the newly established Rainbow Stage.

1953–57 | Established Muddiwater Puppet troupe and was hired by WLT as their first paid director/ manager. Directed William Saroyan’s The Time of Your Life (1953). He worked at CBC as one of Canada’s first television producers. Directed Jean Giraudoux’s The Enchanted (1954). In partnership with Tom Hendry, he formed Theatre 77 in the old Dominion Theatre, 77 footsteps from Portage and Main.

Opposite: Drawing by Sylvia Drake of John Hirsch directing The Dybbuk at the Mark Taper Forum, Los Angeles, 1975, from Journey Into Our Heritage: The Story of the Jewish Peaple in the Canadian West by Harry Gutkin, Lester & Orpen Dennys Publishers, 1980.

1958–65 | Became founding artistic director of the Manitoba Theatre Centre, which was formed by the merger of Theatre 77 and WLT. MTC was the first professional regional theatre in Canada and became a model for similar theatres across North America. In MTC’s first seven seasons, he directed 31 plays, including Of Mice and Men (1959); Anastasia (1960); An Enemy of the People (1962); Pygmalion (1963); A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1964); Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1965); and The Importance of Being Earnest (1965). He also directed numerous plays for Rainbow Stage and children’s theatre groups.

Man’s a Man, the opening production at MTC’s new theatre. He also directed Orton’s What the Butler Saw in 1971 and his own version of The Dybbuk for MTC in 1974.

CURTAIN CALLS

at Yad Vashem. Paul went to a refugee camp in Aschau, Germany, where John Hirsch had set up a puppet theatre. We scoured archives in New York, Israel, Ottawa, Stratford and Winnipeg. Then there were the people we met. John affected umpteen lives and we had the privilege of speaking with many of these individuals, such as Len Cariou, Zoe Caldwell, Martha Henry, Tom Hendry, Roberta Maxwell, Brian Bedford, Maggie Smith and Gordon Pinsent. Stories about John abound, and every actor and colleague we spoke to had some illuminating memory, often inspiring and intimidating in equal measure.

In search of John Hirsch by Alon Nashman

IN A CHURCHILL DRIVE BUNGALOW,

where John Hirsch kept a basement bedroom until the day he died, Paul Thompson and I were shown a shoebox full of matchbooks. Not a single match in the vast collection had been struck. The matchbooks were souvenirs of John’s travels, part of a collection kept by his stepsister Sybil, a noted Winnipeg educator. New York, Istanbul, Budapest, Tel Aviv, Seattle, Montreal, Ottawa, theatres, hotels, restaurants, airlines, bowling alleys, political campaigns and gas stations were all represented. They formed pinpoints on the map of John’s life. Over the past five years, director Paul Thompson and I have travelled to many of those pinpoints in search of John Hirsch. We visited the home where he was born, in a Hungarian lakeside resort, and the puppet theatre in Budapest where he spent hours as a boy. Paul and I researched in Jerusalem where John’s UN refugee documents are stored

NOV/DEC 2013

Wherever we could we’d create scenes for the play, in particular the rehearsal hall at Stratford where John often worked. Paul would suggest a topic or a style, such as “try the Paris orphanage episode, but as done by Steve Martin,” and off I would go. My improvs were recorded and then massaged into script form. As much as possible, we would invite the spirit of John into the room with us. Certain scenes would stick, prove themselves to be theatrically piquant, and we’d keep them. In the North End, we met the family who now lives in John’s first Winnipeg home on Polson Avenue. Wonderfully friendly, active boosters of the community and local school, the youngest son walking proud with a snake around his neck, this family is like the buoyant brood at the heart of You Can’t Take It with You, the play John was directing in 1989 when he was diagnosed with AIDS. We could not help thinking that the house itself seemed imbued with the joyful spirit of the Shack family, who welcomed John into a new life in Winnipeg. These homes, on Churchill, Polson, and on the very stage of MTC, were a refuge for a lost and lonely, yet vibrantly creative young soul, who survived the horrors of the Holocaust and changed the course of Canadian culture. It is our great joy to bring him back home again.

We are proud to support the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and bring you the 2013/2014 season at the Tom Hendry Warehouse.

BETWEEN THEN AND NOW: TWENTY YEARS OF THEATRE PROJECTS MANITOBA By Gordon Tanner, 2012, Canada, 16 min.

Made to celebrate Theatre Projects Manitoba’s 20th anniversary in 2010, this documentary explores the origins of the company and the critical role it plays in encouraging new growth in Winnipeg’s vibrant theatre ecosystem.

JOHN HIRSCH: PORTRAIT OF A MAN AND A THEATRE By Mort Ransen, 1965, Canada, 29 min.

This rarely-seen portrait of the MTC pioneer reflects his radical beliefs about what theatre means. John Hirsch’s infectious enthusiasm led to the creation of the Manitoba Theatre Centre. This film is about his passion for theatre and its contribution to the city of Winnipeg.

HIRSCH Dir. Noam Gonick, 2010, Canada, 11 min.

Noam Gonick’s Hirsch is a creative interpretation of Hirsch’s life with inventive set design and innovative visuals. As a teenaged World War II orphan, Hirsch came to Winnipeg from Europe, his only possession a suitcase puppet show. He became an agitator for culture on the Canadian prairies, co-founding the Manitoba Theatre Centre and going on to direct on New York’s Lincoln Center stage. He died in Toronto in 1989 at age 59 from complications due to AIDS.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE WINNIPEG FILM GROUP

One of the founders of the Manitoba Theatre Centre, John Hirsch was a pioneer in the Winnipeg theatre community for his outspoken views on developing drama and the need to take risks in presenting live theatre. In conjunction with Hirsch at the Tom Hendry Warehouse, the Winnipeg Film Group’s Cinematheque presents two films which speak to his legacy and one on the importance of the independent theatre group Theatre Projects Manitoba, which champions independent theatre in Winnipeg.

The Seagull reveals Anton Chekhov’s lighter side JAN. 22 – FEB. 8

“I’m fifty-five. It’s a bit LATE to change my life.” – DORN

Although he lived to only 44, Anton Chekhov left behind a serious body of work. Plays like The Seagull, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard and hundreds of short stories have stood the test of time. Chekhov counted stalwarts such as Leo Tolstoy, Vladimir Nabokov and Tennessee Williams among his admirers. Even his life outside of writing bore a certain gravitas. After a childhood Chekhov described as a “tyranny,” he trained as a medical doctor. Throughout his life, he remained a practicing physician, saying, “Medicine is my lawful wife and literature my mistress; when I get tired of one, I spend the night with the other.” While Anton Chekhov earned his lofty place among the pantheon of master playwrights for his dramatic prowess, his gift for comedy sometimes goes unheralded. During medical school, Chekhov supported his family by publishing comic short stories. His deft touch with comedy is evident in many of his short stories and plays, including The Seagull. MTC’s production of The Seagull won’t be your only chance to experience the range of Anton Chekhov’s work. The 14th Master Playwright Festival features 22 companies presenting stage and radio plays, readings, films and short stories. We encourage you to take a serious look.
