SETTING THE STAGE

ABOUT TENNESSEE WILLIAMS by Robert Bray Tennessee Williams’ first major production, Battle of Angels (1940), was a critical and commercial disaster. Always one to plow ahead through adversity, Williams recoiled from the devastating experience and began working on the autobiographical play that would result in his almost instant fame, The Glass Menagerie. It premiered in Chicago in December 1944 and soon moved to Broadway, running for 563 performances and winning the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award. Williams followed this huge success with A Streetcar Named Desire (1947), which ran for an amazing 855 performances and in 1951 was adapted into film by Williams and Elia Kazan, who had also directed the Broadway run. Williams had become distrustful of Broadway’s big money and production pressures even as early as The Glass Menagerie, but he never stopped working and never lost interest in having his plays staged. As he had predicted, his drama clearly underwent changes that saw him move beyond the poetic realism that characterized not only many of his early plays (including all the commercial successes), but also the best received and most popular productions of his notable contemporaries. For about 17 years, from 1945 to 1962, no American playwright at home or abroad was more lionized. But sadly, during his last two decades, no American author was more vilified. Because of his early, stupendous success, Williams found himself in a no-win situation at the latter stage of his career. If he

returned to familiar territory, his new play would be unfavourably compared with the previous success of his early work. And if he experimented with bold new material, the critics yearned for a return to his golden period. Williams responded by writing what he wanted to stage, not what the critics demanded of him. But for Williams, fame has a cyclical quality, as now, some 30 years after his death, Williams’ popularity with audiences and critics is approaching that of his glory years. In 1999, his Not About Nightingales, an apprentice play written around 1938, opened to wildly enthusiastic reviews on Broadway and in London, lavishing more praise on the author in a few months than he had enjoyed during the last 10 years of his life. New films, major revivals and hit stagings of previously unpublished work have kept Williams in the headlines in recent years, and in 2005, USA Today proclaimed in a frontpage banner that “Tennessee Williams is Hotter Than Ever.” In the last 10 years, there have been 16 major revivals of his work, and today Williams’ status as America’s greatest playwright seems incontrovertible. Because he travelled in elite circles with celebrities from all over the art world, Williams became a household name in America and abroad, arguably the most recognized literary figure of the century. As with his plays, the movies made of his work explored the drama of the self, probing the dark corners and difficulties of desire and exploring the ties of love and family that bind and entrap his troubled characters. His vision of the human condition, coupled with the poetic form with which it was enacted, quickly achieved recognition for its unique beauty and depth. In

THE GLASS MENAGERIE the space of only a few years, he won four Drama Critics’ Circle Awards, two Pulitzers and a Tony, and was easily elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Williams doubtless endured his share of commercial failures and negative reviews, yet his critical success was unrivalled by any other playwright during Broadway’s most fecund artistic period. He lived in a time when his homosexuality remained an almost taboo topic, but his coming out on the David Frost Show in 1970 before millions of viewers proved to be a courageous act that doubtless inspired other gay artists to be more comfortable with their identities, even if they were not so bold as to publicly pronounce their sexuality.

beholden to the pressures of the almighty dollar. His material remained highly cultural, accommodating tragic themes and modernist techniques, scorning traditional pieties, and including previously taboo subjects such as homosexuality, drug addiction, and even cannibalism. The Broadway and off-Broadway stage in the postwar years and later readily adapted to Williams’ unique vision, and even when the author turned to experimentalism and avant-garde themes, his plays continued to find commercial production, even if audiences and critics, at least for the most part, were bemused and sometimes even angered by the direction in which his mature artistic vision led him. Yet Williams, never one to back down from challenges, worked right up until the day of his death on February 25, 1983.

Throughout his 40-year career, Williams always sought to give his audiences more than just a show, even if, while following his inspiration more Dr. Robert Bray teaches courses in modern American uncompromisingly as a mature artist, he was literature, modern drama, and Tennessee Williams at obliged to seek out friendly and accommodatMiddle Tennessee State University. Our production of The Glass Menagerie features music created by Canadian composer Marc Desormeaux for a Stratford Festival production directed by Marc’s frequent collaborator Miles Potter. In addition to Stratford and the NAC, Marc also worked with Canadian Stage, Mirvish Productions, the Great Canadian Theatre Company, CBC and, of course, the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. Readers of MTC’s Ovation may remember his work in The Drawer Boy, Proof, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, A Streetcar Named Desire and Orpheus Descending, the latter two plays starring Seana McKenna. After Marc died on October 2, 2012, the flag at the National Arts Centre was flown at half-mast, and Miles wrote in an email to us: “There is going to be a large space to fill in the theatrical composer world now … and it will never be completely filled. I don’t know anyone who worked quite like Marc; Seana always felt there was another character on the stage with her when she acted with and to Marc’s music.” During the run of The Glass Menagerie, a CD of The Glass Menagerie and Orpheus Descending: Music of Marc Desormeaux is for sale in the lobby of the John Hirsch Mainstage for $20. Thomas Lanier Williams was born on March 26, 1911. In 1938, he changed his name from Tom to Tennessee, his father’s birth state. Mr. Williams first succeeded on the Broadway scene with The Glass Menagerie, which won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award. He followed his first major critical success with several other Broadway hits, including A Streetcar Named Desire, Summer and Smoke, The Rose Tattoo and Camino Real. Williams received his first Pulitzer Prize in 1948 for A Streetcar Named Desire, and reached an even larger worldwide audience when The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof were made into major motion pictures. His other classic plays include Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (for which he earned a second Pulitzer Prize), Orpheus Descending and The Night of the Iguana.

ANNUAL GIVING

Unique, But Part of the Whole

Jim: “Isn’t there some one thing that you take

more interest in than anything else? Laura: “Well, I do… I have my glass collection.” – The Glass Menagerie

In Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, Laura finds meaning and purpose in her life through the little glass ornaments her mother calls “the glass menagerie.” Laura’s menagerie provides an escape from the world around her and a chance to reflect on her life. In a very real way, theatre is like Laura’s glass menagerie. Attending a play can transport us to another world and provide an escape. At other times, the theatre holds up the world before us so we can reflect on its reality. Of course, part of the reality of bringing theatre to the stage is the cost. Ticket sales generate only half the money needed to present the season. The other half comes from grants, sponsorships, and corporate and individual donations. You can become a part of that “other half” by making an investment in MTC. A gift supports both the artists on stage and the work behind the scenes. It also allows MTC to keep ticket prices affordable, support education and outreach programs, and present the regional tour. Ben McIntyre-Ridd and Gordon Tanner in A Christmas Story. PHOTO BY BRUCE MONK

By supporting MTC, you play a part in the creation of the art. Your investment also deepens your connection with the wonders you see on stage because you’ll know you have made a contribution, just as the seamstress stitched the costumes and the carpenters crafted the set. Donor benefits go far beyond the tangible ones listed, which range from recognition in Ovation 18

FEB/MAR 2014

to invitations to special events, depending on the level of your gift. For an outline of individual donor levels and the exciting benefits you can receive, visit www.mtc.mb.ca. Some MTC donors choose to make a regular investment through our Monthly Giving Program. While our season runs from autumn to spring, MTC’s dedication to storytelling continues throughout the year and a monthly gift provides the theatre resources all year round. By lending your support on a regular basis, even smaller monthly amounts can add up. Think of it this way – a monthly gift may have helped pay for: • Harvey’s hat (the one with the rabbit holes) in Harvey; • The suggestive outfit worn by Vanda in Venus in Fur; • The leg lamp in A Christmas Story; • The period costumes and wigs created for each character in Jane Eyre; • The elaborate set, including the intricate figurines in The Glass Menagerie. Monthly giving has its advantages. Your gift can be securely charged to your credit card each month, spreading your annual gift over several months. By making a monthly gift, you know you are assisting in the creative process that brings life to our stages. Pick up a donor card in the theatre lobby or contact MTC’s Development Department at 204-956-1340 to make your monthly gift. You receive one income tax receipt at the end of the tax year. Laura’s menagerie in the play has many different figurines on the shelf, including her beloved unicorn. While each figurine is unique, it is also part of a whole collection. At MTC, the actors, stage managers, directors, prop team, audience members, sponsors, stage hands and monthly donors all have a unique and important role to play in each and every production to bring the story to life.

Donate by mail, phone or online at www.mtc.mb.ca. For more information, contact MTC’s Development Department at 204-956-1340.

MTC/MBA LAWYERS PLAY

Just Another Day at the Office!? Power, sex, ambition and greed – it’s just another day at the office for some. And certainly for the cast of this year’s Lawyers Play, the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Blending wit, comedy and romance, the story follows the unlikely rise of a window washer to high-powered executive. Featuring memorable songs from the authors of Guys and Dolls, this irreverent musical will delight audiences (without really trying). Since 1990, members of the MBA have volunteered thousands of billable hours for the Lawyers Play and in the process, these talented lawyers and judges have raised over $850,000 for MTC programming. In 2002, the Manitoba Bar Association received a National Post Award for Business in the Arts for its innovative collaboration with the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. For first-time cast member Jaime Rosin from Aikins Law, this fundraising production is a great cause to support. “I’ve been coming to MTC since I was young,” said Jaime, “and I think it is so fantastic that we have such easy access to quality theatre in Manitoba through MTC. It’s obviously a great cause to support. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that many people who end up in the legal profession grow up dreaming of being actors – the theatrics translate pretty well to the courtroom! The Lawyers Play lets you relive that dream for a little while. Most of all, it’s just so much fun! “I grew up at MTYP and doing shows at school, and the fine folks at MTC are definitely whipping me back into shape! I can honestly say that everyone who comes to see the play will be seriously

impressed with the level of talent and quality of the performance that is going to be on display. You won’t think of lawyers the same way again!” Jeff Hirsch from Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP performed in his first Lawyers Play in 1990’s Twelve Angry Jurors and is making his eighth appearance this year. “My family and I saw this show on Broadway a couple of years ago and it was hugely entertaining – great, sly writing and a ton of laughs,” says Jeff. “It is a great satire and tongue-in-cheek tale on the workplace and the things people do to try to survive and get ahead. Did I mention it’s funny?” “I usually stay away from the musicals and stick to the acting, but I am hoping there will be enough happening on stage in this one that my singing and dancing go unnoticed,” laughs Jeff. That said, he is having great fun working with choreographer Sofia Costantini. “This is my first time working with Sofia and I can see she is going to make sure everybody gives their all. She is committed to making our dance numbers as creative and fun as they can be. I am a fan.” How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, directed by MTC’s own Robb Paterson, takes the stage from April 29 to May 3 at the Tom Hendry Warehouse. Gala performance tickets cost $100 and include complimentary wine, a post-show reception with hors d’oeuvres and a $70 tax receipt. Tickets for the April 29 preview cost $50 and include a $35 tax receipt.

Call the MTC Box Office at 204-942-6537 to get your tickets. For more information and the complete cast list, or to purchase your tickets online, visit www.mtc.mb.ca/lawyersplay

Toronto Fringe hit Kim’s Convenience touches down in Winnipeg HHHHH “Stomach-hurtingly funny” – NOW MAGAZINE MAR. 12 – APR. 5 The national tour of Ins Choi’s smash hit Kim’s Convenience makes a welcome stop at MTC before continuing to Vancouver. This hilarious and touching play first charmed audiences at the 2011 Toronto Fringe Festival, winning the New Play contest and the Patron’s Pick. The show has since enjoyed successful runs at theatres across Canada, including Soulpepper, where it was extended more than once due to demand. The playwright and actor Ins Choi was born in Korea. His parents came to Canada with $200, three kids and a lot of hope. Although Kim’s Convenience was inspired by his family’s experiences, the story has a universal resonance that transcends ethnicity. The play is ultimately about family and the cast is often approached by audience members who say, “That’s my story.” The journey of a fractured but loving family confronting the future and forgiving the past is quickly becoming a Canadian classic. We hope it will join the ranks of previous Fringe shows such as The Drowsy Chaperone and Jake’s Gift that have become classics on MTC stages.

SETTING THE STAGE Excerpts from

The Diary of Anne Frank On Nazi Punishment of Resisters “Have you ever heard the term ‘hostages’? That’s the latest punishment for saboteurs. It’s the most horrible thing you can imagine. Leading citizens – innocent people – are taken prisoner to await their execution. If the Gestapo can’t find the saboteur, they simply grab five hostages and line them up against the wall. You read the announcements of their death in the paper, where they’re referred to as ‘fatal accidents’.” – October 9, 1942 “All college students are being asked to sign an official statement to the effect that they ‘sympathize with the Germans and approve of the New Order.’ Eighty per cent have decided to obey the dictates of their conscience, but the penalty will be severe. Any student refusing to sign will be sent to a German labor camp.” – May 18, 1943

THE SECRET ANNEX On Writing and Her Diary “Mr. Bolkestein, the Cabinet Minister, speaking on the Dutch broadcast from London, said that after the war a collection would be made of diaries and letters dealing with the war. Of course, everyone pounced on my diary.” – March 29, 1944 “When I write, I can shake off all my cares.” – April 5, 1944

On Still Believing “It’s a wonder I haven’t abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart. It’s utterly impossible for me to build my life on a foundation of chaos, suffering and death. I see the world being slowly transformed into a wilderness, I hear the approaching thunder that, one day, will destroy us too, I feel the suffering of millions. And yet, when I look up at the sky, I somehow feel that everything will change for the better, that this cruelty too shall end, that peace and tranquility will return once more.” – July 15, 1944

Playwright’s

Notes

by Alix Sobler

IN MANY WAYS WRITING A PLAY IS LIKE LIVING A LIFE. You make decisions, sometimes seemingly at random, and then you deal with the aftermath. Every story can be told a thousand different ways depending on the choices you make, just as every life can be lived a thousand different ways depending on the paths you follow. In the end, we must have confidence that the decisions we made were more than just arbitrary acts, but the best possible choices to be made at the time, based on the information we had, the strengths of our character, and the experiences that have shaped who we are. What if Anne Frank had lived? It’s such a simple question with no simple answers. I submit to you this one possible outcome from a universe of possibilities. As a longtime admirer of the writer and the person, I have always longed to see Anne breathe again, to age and flourish, to experience the full life that she deserved, that she so desperately wanted, with all of its triumphs and tragedies. But for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, and so it must be conceded that it’s possible that Anne’s gain might have resulted in a loss to the world. And so choices were made. Paths were forged. We deal with the aftermath. Such is life. I am so grateful to Steven Schipper, Laurie Lam, Camilla Holland and everyone at MTC for their confidence, support and encouragement in the 26

writing and producing of this play. I also have to thank Michael Nathanson and WJT for commissioning it, and believing in it from the beginning. Much appreciation is owed to the Manitoba Arts Council for funding, and to my colleagues at the Winnipeg Arts Council for their generosity of spirit and friendship. This play could not have been written without the kindness and encouragement of my fellow playwrights of the Prairie Theatre Exchange Playwright’s Unit and the many friends and peers who supported me along the way. To the wonderful actors who helped with readings and workshops, I thank you. To Jen, Daria, Kevin, Andrew and Tal, whose hard work, creativity, and dedication throughout this process has made this play what it is, I say thank you. To Heidi, a fearless leader, brilliant mind and gentle spirit, I could not have asked for a more devoted partner on this journey. I thank you more than you know. And finally, thank you to Anne. She is a voice who refused to be silenced, a young woman unafraid to speak her mind and an icon who continues to inspire us, educate us and challenge us to recognize the paths we have chosen. She continually reminds me to be grateful for every day. Words can never express what I owe Anne Frank. Perhaps this play will scratch the surface. L’chaim, Alix Sobler
