SETTING THE STAGE Background Notes Kim’s Convenience began as a vignette for an event at fu-GEN Theatre. Director Nina Lee Aquino, among others, felt there was more to be mined: a story rooted in Toronto but not often portrayed on its stages. A story needing to be told. With Aquino’s encouragement and guidance, Ins Choi set out to create a full-length play. But first he acted at the Stratford Festival, won a place in the Soulpepper Academy, and became a father twice over. The play grew slowly, gaining supporters as it went. Choi’s faith community at Grace Toronto Church, for example, funded a week-long workshop. When Kim’s Convenience was finally submitted to the Fringe Festival New Play Contest, it won. The subsequent production and extension were sold out. Soulpepper saw a chance to champion a new work that celebrates a completely Torontonian story. And here we are. While not autobiographical, this play is grounded in a thorough knowledge of the milieu. In fact, Choi originally wanted to stage it in an actual convenience store. “You got that smell,” he says. “You got that convenience store smell, the dust, the grime, the bell…” That idea didn’t come to pass, but this tender, funny and surprising script evokes the setting brilliantly anyway, giving the play a powerful integrity and authenticity. One of its many pleasures is the behind-the-scenes look we get at this staple of our economy. From the 1980s, when the Kim family of the play moves into Regent

Park, Koreans have been a fixture in Toronto convenience stores. In the enormously appealing character of Mr. Kim, or Appa (father), we see the smarts, courage, resourcefulness and humour these immigrants brought with them. Through his customers and perhaps most vividly through his children, we also see Mr. Kim’s prejudices, hopes, fears and longings. He is a fully rounded, richlyrealized creation, and a gift for any actor. Listen to Mr. Kim on the subject of who’s stealing and who isn’t. Watch him deal with other businessmen. His daughter may speak better English but she has her hands full in an argument with her toughminded Appa. Mr. Kim’s all too familiar difficulty is he has knowledge but no one to pass it on to: neither of his children will take over the business when he retires. They have other dreams – desires Mr. Kim and his wife’s hard work and sacrifice have helped make possible. One of the script’s most revealing aspects is its portrait of Regent Park. The closeness and pride among those who live there is perhaps most simply and beautifully summed up in Mr. Kim’s response to the idea of closing his store: “This community need me.” The gentrification now underway may improve some buildings, there’ll certainly be more pricey condominiums, but what will happen to the people who have called this community home for years? What will happen to the small businesses that have so faithfully served them? Through this one family, their business and their loyal clientele, Ins Choi has given us a hilarious, touching glimpse of a corner of our own world. Here. And now.

Playwright’s Notes by Ins Choi My father grew up in North Korea. Since his birth, until the end of the Second World War, it was “occupied” by the Japanese. Soon after WWII, the Korean civil war broke out. During that time, he and his family walked south, across the mountainous Korean peninsula with thousands of others in search of freedom. My mother grew up in an orphanage in war-torn South Korea, raising her younger brother from the age of five. After graduating high school, she was working as a secretary for the government when she met my father. They set foot in Canada in 1975 with $200, three kids and hope. My father worked at

my uncle’s convenience store by day and went to ESL classes by night while my mother took care of me and my two older sisters. We lived with my uncle’s family in the apartment above their convenience store on Weston Road and Black Creek Drive. After a performance of Kim’s Convenience at the 2011 Toronto Fringe Festival, my parents came up to me, hugged me and said, “We are very proud of you. Thank you.” Kim’s Convenience is my love letter to them and to all first generation immigrants who call Canada their home. I am deeply honoured and thrilled that you are here as part of the Kim’s Convenience tour. Mari, you had more faith in me than I had in myself. Love you… you too, Poem… you too, River.

CURTAIN CALLS From Fringe to Centre Stage

by Jason Neufeld As you’re probably aware by now, Kim’s Convenience came to prominence at the Fringe in 2011. Playwright Ins Choi won the Best New Play Award at the Toronto Fringe Festival that summer before the play was remounted by Soulpepper Theatre in 2012. It’s a success story that speaks to the power and importance of the Fringe movement in North America. While many theatre artists take a more conventional route to success in the industry – undergrad, theatre school, endless auditions – the Fringe circuit has become a valuable breeding ground for artists who perhaps don’t fit the mould, or find themselves on the outside looking in. What is unique about the Fringe model is that artists have the freedom to create their work without restrictions. Fringe Festivals are unjuried and uncensored as a rule, meaning anyone can mount a show as long as they get a slot through the lottery, and have the courage and the drive to do so. This freedom often leads to incredible theatre: either deeply personal works that expose the pure heart of an artist, or wildly imaginative work that can only be produced when an artist is unshackled and given the opportunity to fully realize their personal vision. And Choi’s success is far from unprecedented. The Fringe has given birth to a multitude of 10

celebrated artists and productions. The Drowsy Chaperone, which debuted at the Toronto Fringe Festival in the late ‘90s, has had a successful Broadway run and numerous subsequent productions. Ronnie Burkett and his marionettes came to prominence during the Fringe’s early days. Some of you might remember Fool’s Edge, which played at the Cauldron during Winnipeg’s very first Fringe Festival. Burkett has gone on to worldwide renown in the years since, including acclaimed productions at MTC like Tinka’s New Dress. Rick Miller had one of the quintessential Fringe hits in the ‘90s with MacHomer and has since experienced incredible success, including his production of Bigger Than Jesus, which was well-received at MTC’s Warehouse in 2003. And it’s not just Toronto artists; local success stories include Joseph Aragon, whose musical Bloodless: The Trial of Burke and Hare debuted in Toronto as Theatre 20’s inaugural production. Alix Sobler, whose show The Secret Annex just wrapped up a successful run at the Warehouse, cut her teeth on the Fringe circuit with shows like The Cloud Factory and She’s Not There. The list goes on and on. These success stories don’t just live in mainstream theatres either. For example, Charlie Ross has been touring his One Man Star Wars and One Man Lord of the Rings shows non-stop for years, and The Pajama Men, masters of absurdist narrative sketch comedy (Fringers may remember

them as Sabotage) have graduated from the North American Fringe circuit to selling out houses all across the globe with their new show Just the Two of Each of Us. TJ Dawe and Michael Rinaldi penned a comedy called Toothpaste and Cigars that toured the circuit in the early 2000s. That play was recently adapted as a movie starring Daniel Radcliffe and renamed The F Word. But the Fringe isn’t just about its successes. It’s about unfettered imagination and easy access to theatre for both artists and the audience. Many

shows live a quick and vibrant life over the course of a couple of weeks in the summer and yet never again see the light of day. And this too, is beautiful. Many Fringe-goers have their favourite shows they shared with but a handful of other lucky audience members – perfect moments in time with shows that seemed to speak directly to them. But every once in a while, they are treated to a show that is destined for something bigger. Audience members in Winnipeg will never forget being among the lucky few to snag tickets to Jake’s Gift when it first played at the Fringe in 2009 at MTC Up the Alley with its limited seating capacity. Or they felt part of the groundswell that was last year’s runaway hit show 6 Guitars by Chase Padgett and Jay Hopkins. Theatre producers in Canada will continue to mine the Fringe circuit for shows destined for bigger stages, because these shows speak directly to the heart of what we’re all looking for – something honest and pure.

In his subversively funny Good People, David Lindsay-Abaire hits us where we live. For Margie, played by Frances McDormand on Broadway, this is a working-class neighbourhood in Boston. When Margie loses her job at the Dollar Store, she turns to an old flame for help. Mike has become a successful doctor and has escaped the old neighbourhood. If we’ve learned anything from Boston boys Matt Damon and Ben Affleck (Good Will Hunting, The Departed, The Town), it’s how tricky it can be to cut the ties forged in a hardnosed neighbourhood. We can move on, but do we really get to leave the past behind? If we work hard and move to an upscale neighbourhood, does this mean we’ve succeeded where others have failed? For 16 years, Investors Group has generously supported MTC’s Wordplay program; they have been a corporate supporter since 1972. Their visionary leadership has been a critical factor in the success of our new play development. Since Steven Schipper took the helm of MTC, he has premiered an average of one new play each season, an exciting accomplishment for the company, for the artists who created the work and for the corporation who funded the artistic exploration. Wordplay is MTC’s vitally important “R&D” wing, where we can foster new work and invest in the creation and development of plays for our stages, and for the Canadian theatre canon. We review and analyze script submissions, commission new plays, provide dramaturgical support, and program readings and workshops. In the current season, support from Wordplay had a significant impact on our Tom Hendry Warehouse productions of Hirsch and The Secret Annex. Canadian playwrights Paul Thompson, Alon Nashman and Alix Sobler were given the resources to finesse characters, hone dialogue, and fine-tune narrative, before the pressures of rehearsal and an audience were introduced. Wordplay readings – with artists gathering to perform a play in MTC’s library – also help us select plays at the John Hirsch Mainstage. For example, hearing actors read Julie Beckman’s adaptation of Jane Eyre convinced Steven Schipper that the play could take MTC audiences on a magical journey into the heart of the Charlotte Brontë novel. 24
