park on Churchill Drive in South Winnipeg. As biographers Fraidie Martz and Andrew Wilson describe it, John felt betrayed, raging at his family for abandoning the North End and everything it stood for. One day that autumn, John took a walk “along the river and noticed, as if for the first time, the wildflowers growing on the river banks, birds congregating in preparation for the migration south, and the squirrels gathering acorns for the winter.” He stopped grieving the loss of his old home, and became like the nature around him, oblivious to political boundaries and class distinctions. Such territorial allegiances are not unique to Winnipeg. David Lindsay-Abaire has set the first

Morality isn’t a function of location or prosperity. It is the realization that we are all connected, and that to help or harm another is to send ripples through all of humanity. The best theatre – like this play and those you’ll see here next season – reminds us that we are all one. That sense of a shared world saved John Hirsch as he wrestled with his new home in South Winnipeg. Little did he know that his success (and, by extension, the success of our theatre) would rest on his belief that good people live at either end of this noble, enlightened city. Yours always,

SETTING THE STAGE Q&A with Good People playwright David Lindsay-Abaire

Q

Good People is not autobiographical, but you did grow up in South Boston, where the play is set. Why did you choose to return to that setting now in your work?

A

I just think the neighbourhood is so complicated and ripe for storytelling. That said, I avoided writing about it for a very long time because the people I grew up with, I love and respect very much and I wanted to make sure I was mature enough as a writer and as a person to write about them respectfully. I kept hearing about British playwrights and how often they wrote about class. And people were asking, “Where are the American plays about class?” I thought, “Good question. Why don’t we write about class? Could I write about class?” I went back to the idea of Southie, and I thought if I wrote about the neighbourhood, then inevitably class would bubble up to the surface. There is this strange zeitgeist that is happening around South Boston and other working class neighbourhoods in Boston. But those stories are so often about crime and drugs and Whitey Bulger – these stereotypes of South Boston from 30 years ago that weren’t even accurate then, but they continue to get rolled out. I wanted to write about the people I grew up with, 99 per cent of whom just rolled out of bed in the morning, went to work, tried to feed their kids and did the best they could. How would you describe Southie – both the neighbourhood and the people you grew up with? Very salt-of-the-earth, working class people who are just trying to make a good life for themselves

and for their families. It’s scrappy, of course, and people are often mouthy. Right now the neighbourhood is very much in transition. It’s becoming gentrified and much more diverse than it was when I was growing up. It will probably be something completely different in five years, and it’s certainly not what it was when I was growing up there. I think I want to go back and write a couple more plays about it, because the more time I spend thinking about it, the more stories start swimming around in my head. The other location in the play is in the Boston suburbs: Chestnut Hill. Did you have some personal connection to that neighbourhood? I worked for a few weeks one summer in Chestnut Hill, and I knew some friends from Chestnut Hill. When I was 11 I got a scholarship to a private school, Milton Academy, which is in the suburbs. Every day I would get on a train and take it to the end of the line and go to Milton. At the end of every day I would come back to Southie. So that feeling of being aware of two worlds, I was familiar with that from when I was 11 years old. Was that when you started to feel a distance between yourself and the neighbourhood you were from? The character of Mike, who used to live in Southie but has “gotten out,” seems to feel that conflict very strongly. It’s the part of the play that I am incredibly familiar with and very aware of, that pull of being “of the neighbourhood” but not “of the neighbourhood” anymore. But I felt similar at Milton – clearly I was not of that world and yet I spent every minute of my day there, practically. After a couple

GOOD PEOPLE

“I wanted to write about the people I grew up with, 99 per cent of whom just rolled out of bed in the morning, went to work, tried to feed their kids and did the best they could.” – DAVID LINDSAY-ABAIRE

of years of going to school there, I was at Milton but not of Milton, and in Southie but no longer of Southie. I had a foot planted in these very different worlds. That conflict, that tension, shaped me as a person and certainly shaped me as a writer – and I think probably created a writer. It made me the quintessential outsider wherever I went. I think the most significant difference between me and the Mike character is that I was totally aware of what role luck played in the good things that happened to me. Mike seems to be of the mind that he has earned and deserves everything he has. I am not of the same mind. I have certainly worked very, very hard, and yet there are people from my neighbourhood who are just as smart as I was who just didn’t get the breaks I got. The scholarship that I got, it was from the Boys & Girls Club, and it only happened once every six years.

I had to be the right age on the right year for it to be possible for me to even get that scholarship. I was, and continue to be, very aware that my life could have gone in a very different direction. How do you see Good People fitting into the context of your other work? When it came time to do Good People, I thought, “What kind of play is this, how should these people speak? What is the style of it?” And again, I loved and respected the people from the neighbourhood so deeply that there was no way I was going to caricature them or write them so broadly that they could be dismissed. Ultimately the play decided for itself what it was going to be, and I suspect that’s what most plays that I write will do.

CURTAIN CALLS Director’s notes “There can be no vulnerability without risk; there can be no community without vulnerability; there can be no peace, and ultimately no life, without community.” – M. Scott Peck

by Vikki Anderson This is my favourite kind of play: authentic characters, an underdog heroine and socially relevant themes written with humour, openness and dignity. I also truly love this play because, like real life, it poses more questions than it answers. What makes a good person: character, values, morals, choices, words or actions? How do you judge? Who does the judging? What is it to be vulnerable, economically and emotionally? Is it strength of character, or a few lucky breaks that determine your fate? What are the ambiguities of memory when seen from the eyes of the vulnerable? And what are its contradictions when seen from the eyes of those who are privileged? The play asks challenging questions about the class system and the role that luck plays in separating the haves from the have-nots. The answers to these questions are not as straightforward as they may seem on the surface. You expect the arguments, especially given our current economic climate, to be polarized and fairly evident: Mike is ungrateful and Margie is admirable. Mike seems ungracious and takes his good luck for granted, while Margie inspires our compassion for her years of self-sacrifice. But Margie’s needs are physical: she’s desperate and simply needs a job. While Mike’s needs are more metaphysical: he’s desperate to secure evidence that, despite his advantages, he is still “good people”. Mike, who has the luxury of economic stability, struggles to avoid emotional vulnerability and his comfortable lifestyle insulates him from his past and Margie’s reality. Economic vulnerability drives a good person like Margie to become angry, resentful and vindictive and to engage in passive-aggressive tactics to elicit evidence that she has not wasted her life. We watch her wrestle with fear, hope, empathy and bitterness in an 10

APR/MAY 2014

effort to be seen, and to have someone see the world through her eyes. While we can’t deny how Margie has been victimized, we also can’t disparage Mike for wanting to get out. What makes a good person? Most of us are good people. We can be dignified, empathetic, loyal, generous and conversely petty, selfish, greedy and graceless when our values are tested. Our goodness is examined every day in our capacity to show indifference or compassion towards anyone we come in contact with – from our coffee shop barista to our loved ones at home. Who is ultimately worthy of the title “good people?” I hope you enjoy discovering the answer for yourself.

HOLDING A SPECIAL EVENT? CORRIENTES DOES CATERING!

ANNUAL GIVING

One of our community’s ‘good people’ will match your donation Donate for the first time or increase your gift and it will have double the impact! In Good People, Margie and Mike grew up in the same neighbourhood and shared many youthful adventures. But they drifted apart and lost touch with their old friends. Margie stayed in the neighbourhood and Mike went to university, became a doctor and moved to an upscale area. Many years later, circumstances bring them together again. Margie needs help and Mike appears to be in a position to provide assistance. Good People deals with community and the relationships within it. Among other things, the play makes us think about philanthropy. What is our responsibility to those in our society who need help? What is our responsibility to charitable causes in our community?

This year, we are fortunate that an anonymous “good person” has offered to match each new and increased gift, up to a total of $5,000. So, any donation made to MTC before May 31 will have double the impact. The generosity of MTC’s family of donors makes a significant difference to our annual budget. Ticket sales only provide half the dollars needed to produce the quality programming we enjoy. The other half comes from corporate gifts, sponsorships and individual giving. Through your donation to MTC, you not only help the theatre but you also receive great donor benefits. Check mtc.mb.ca for more information. The MTC donor family is made up of many “good people” who care about this theatre and this community. Join the family now by making a donation. Send your donation now by mail, online at mtc.mb.ca or phone Heidi Struck in our Development department at 204-954-6412. Be one of the “good people.” 22

EDUCATION & OUTREACH

Theatre for Young Audiences

Each season, 25 Grade 11 and 12 students participate in MTC’s Backstage Pass program, which offers workshops with theatre professionals, free lunch from Subway, tickets to all six shows at the John Hirsch Mainstage, and the opportunity to chat with actors after the performances.

“Someone asked me once if i see the arts in my future and i responded simply by saying ‘yes’. Whether we are involved on stage, behind the stage, or in the audience, involvement and inclusion are crucial to sustaining the theatre we love, because we are the next theatre generation.” – Khylie Graham, Backstage Pass participant from Miles MacDonell Collegiate

• Almost 1,900 students joined us this season for four special student-only matinees – A Christmas Story, The Secret Annex, The Glass Menagerie and Kim’s Convenience. • More than 200 students subscribed to the entire six-show John Hirsch Mainstage season. • Approximately 2,000 students and teachers joined us for matinees and evening performances throughout the season. Thank you to the educators from all the schools involved, and to Great-West Life for helping us share the amazing experience of live theatre! THEATRE FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES SPONSORED BY

Pay for your parking by phone Did you know you can use your phone to pay at Impark lots? We recommend registering in advance at paybyphone.com for added convenience. Avoid lineups and enjoy the comfort of your car by paying for parking with your cell phone! PayByPhone eliminates the need for you to pay at a lot’s meter, place a ticket on your dash or be at risk of running out of time. Through a simple registration process, you can create an account profile that includes your vehicle details and payment option. Then, depending on where or how you park, you can use your cell phone or PayByPhone’s website or app to pay for parking. Billing is automatic and you can access and receive reports online or by email… and because Impark uses wireless handheld devices to monitor its locations, your parking is instantly recognized as valid. PAYBYPHONE PROGRAM AVAILABLE IN MANY IMPARK LOCATIONS

Participation is easy. There are two ways to use this new service: 1 Call Four easy steps: 1 CALL THE PHONE NUMBER POSTED ON THE LOT’S SIGNAGE Phone numbers for the PayByPhone service are displayed on parking meters and signs. 2 RESPOND TO THE PROMPTS Existing users will be prompted to enter the four- or five-digit location number and parking time required. New users will be guided through a registration process. 3 WAIT TO HEAR THAT PARKING HAS STARTED Once you’ve heard confirmation that your parking has started you may leave your vehicle. Your vehicle will now appear on the handheld units used by Impark employees. 4 EXTEND PARKING ANYTIME Extension is possible at any time. Simply call the number you dialed in Step 1. Your account will be recognized and you will be given the option to extend your parking session or to start a new one.

2 Use the mobile app Download the free app (available for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry), use the mobile website (m.paybyphone.com) or call the number on the meter from any phone. PayByPhone users receive text message reminders, which cut down on annoying parking fines, and enjoy the ability to add more time from anywhere without having to rush back to the meter. Other features include email receipts and management of your account online. For more information or to register, please visit paybyphone.com For more information, please visit www.impark.com

TRIBUTE: GERALD ELDRED (1934–2013) his tenure, helping to increase the organization’s budget from $2 million to $6 million. Eldred’s ability as a sharp monetary manager also came into play during his tenure as the Executive Director of the Stratford Festival, where he helped bring it through one of the roughest financial periods in its history. In 1986, Eldred moved on to become Managing Director of the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto and retired in 1997.

Gerald Eldred, known universally as “Gerry,” was a distinguished administrative leader, financial manager and longtime arts and culture supporter who became the only person to serve as chief administrator for four of Canada’s major performing arts groups. On June 18, 2013, Eldred passed away at the age of 78, leaving his beloved wife Marjorie, his twin sister Joan Ferguson of Guelph, and a half sister, Cathy Eadie of Mississauga. Eldred was predeceased by his two sons.

For his strength as an administrator in Canada’s artistic community, Eldred received many accolades in his lifetime, including the Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee Award in 1997, the 1989 Award from the Association of Cultural Executives and the Silver Ticket Award, presented in 1998 by the Toronto Theatre Alliance. To be successful, the performing arts community depends on strong anchors like Gerald Eldred to help us weather the storms and ever-changing dynamics in our industry. Eldred played an important role in some of Canada’s greatest arts organizations, and their continued success can only serve as a tribute to his steadfast leadership and unwavering support.

A native of Galt, ON, Eldred originally had aspirations of becoming an actor, but ultimately chose a career in accounting – a combination of talents that contributed to his strength as a leader in the performing arts. Like many in the arts community, Eldred wore numerous hats before settling into a leadership role. After training in the production course at the National Theatre School, Eldred worked in various capacities at the Canadian Players, Rainbow Stage and the National Arts Centre before coming to the Manitoba Theatre Centre in the late 1960s. During his time at MTC, Eldred connected deeply with his love of acting and theatre by serving in many roles throughout the organization. He served as an administrator, technical director and a stage manager, and even took the opportunity to direct MTC’s 1968/69 production of The Zoo Story at the Warehouse. In 1968, Eldred was appointed Administrative Director of MTC, a position he held until 1972 when he accepted the post of General Director of the National Ballet of Canada. Eldred’s financial smarts helped to make many lasting improvements to the National Ballet of Canada during 26

2013/14 REGIONAL TOUR

Miracle on South Division Street JANUARY 27 – MARCH 2, 2014

Touring in the middle of a Manitoba winter is not for the faint of heart. Regional Tour veterans, along with one or two novices, took off one blustery Monday morning in January, ready to take the province by storm. Our 36th consecutive Regional Tour included actors Tricia Cooper (Beverly Nowak), Marina Stephenson Kerr (Clara Nowak), Stefanie Wiens (Ruth Nowak) and Cory Wojcik (Jimmy Nowak), stage managers Kathryn Ball and Jessica Freundl, and technicians Ian Kirk and Chris Hadley. The intrepid company braved over 5,000 kilometres of whiteouts, frozen sets and countless cheeseburgers as they brought Miracle on South Division Street to more than 3,000 audience members all over Manitoba and northwestern Ontario. We surveyed audiences and the vast majority of respondents raved about their theatre experience. One audience member remarked, “I am so grateful to have such high calibre of live theatre here in Deloraine.” “This year, we celebrate a decade-long partnership with MTC as the presenting sponsor of the annual Regional Tour,” said Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries President and CEO Winston Hodgins. “We are honoured to support the very important role the tour plays in connecting and enriching our communities with the joy of professional live theatre. We would like to thank the talented artists and the dedicated crew who made this year’s tour possible.” This tour would not be possible without the assistance of our sponsors: Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, Manitoba Hydro, Manitoba Public Insurance and MacDon. We would also like to thank all of our presenters and volunteers. APR/MAY 2014

FINAL BOW

The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre honours the passing of those dear to our theatre – people who’ve made a lasting contribution to this ephemeral art form.

Claire Miller

Gene Pyrz

Robert Glen Thompson

Claire Miller was an insurance executive at Great-West Life when he and his wife Irene started attending the newly created Manitoba Theatre Centre in 1958. Eighteen years later, Claire was elected Chair of MTC, a position he held for two years. Dr. Gregory Poggi, who was MTC’s General Manager at the time, remembers Claire as “an outstanding Chair for MTC – caring, decent, supportive, seeking only the best for the company and the community, and a wonderful mentor to me.” After Claire completed his term at MTC, the Sterling Lyon government appointed him to chair their Cultural Policy Review Committee, and then the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra board. Jim Carr, who worked with Claire on the Cultural Policy Review, praised his spirit of voluntarism and philanthropy, his huge heart and his ability to bring people together in a common cause.

Gene Pyrz was an actor and musician who swaggered across our stages in 10 productions, including three plays during the 1995/96 season, when he was a member of our resident acting company. He also appeared in such memorable Fringe plays as Yvette Nolan’s Blade and Sam Shepard’s musical The Sad Lament of Pecos Bill on the Eve of Killing His Wife, and was the lead singer in the rockabilly band Combo Combo. In a Winnipeg Free Press interview, MTC Artistic Director Steven Schipper remembered how cool Gene was, “… with his gravelly voice and rock-star slouch. He was a man’s man, Winnipeg’s answer to Russell Crowe. I’ll never forget his Mercutio here in the mid-’90s or his Macheath in The Threepenny Opera six years later. But it’s his Hank Williams in The Show He Never Gave that will probably linger in people’s minds, because it was that perfect Gene Pyrz combination of music, theatre and hip.”

Robert Glen Thompson will be remembered by everyone at MTC for his work as Site Supervisor and Front-of-House Manager at our Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, for his brief but jolly stints as Interim Receptionist, and, most indelibly, for his roles as James Lingk in Glengarry Glen Ross and Little Charles in August: Osage County. He delighted an entire generation of Manitoba students with his many performances in school tours such as A Prairie Boy’s Winter (PTE), Romeo and Juliet (SIR) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (SIR). Between acting jobs, he managed to perform stunts for film, play thousands of games of hockey, and travel to more exotic places around the world than most of us will ever read about. His unwavering belief in love, laughter and perpetual motion made him seem eternally young and impervious to mortality, perhaps the greatest acting performance of his career.
