Message from the Artistic Director

We all have a picture of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes in our head. There’s the Meerschaum pipe, the deerstalker cap and the houndstooth cape; all the outward trappings of an eccentric man whose powers of observation and intellectual deduction far surpass his social skills. Recently, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller’s portrayals of the great detective have updated Holmes and given him a contemporary relevance, but there are other ways to re-imagine this iconic figure. At our John Hirsch Mainstage, playwright Katie Forgette has brought two real-life theatre artists – Steven Schipper

playwright Oscar Wilde and actress Lillie Langtry – into the orbit of the fictional detective, and created a

compelling new tale of blackmail and royal scandal. By cleverly lifting lines from both Wilde and Conan Doyle, Forgette has written a literary mash-up with special appeal for those of us who love theatre. But perhaps Forgette’s greatest accomplishment is her creation of Lillie Langtry as a woman worthy of a future king, or an uncommonly clever detective. Playwright Colleen Murphy has also created a pair of worthy adversaries – one male and one female – at our Tom Hendry Warehouse. Halley Armstrong would seem to be an unlikely match for an injured soldier. She is only 12 years old and confined to a wheelchair, but she’s taken the Girl Guide oath to do her best, to be true to herself, her beliefs and her country, and to take action for a better world. That the soldier doesn’t want her to improve his world seems almost irrelevant. Détente arises from an unlikely source, a 120-year-old book about war that turns the two young people into unlikely allies. Both Murphy and Forgette walk arm-in-arm with literary masters from another century, crossing thresholds of time and gender to create modern stories of humanity and hope. We are delighted to launch our season with these pairs of men and women, as they find light in the darkness and yin in the yang, like houndstooth. Yours always,

SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE CASE OF THE JERSEY LILY

THE EVOLUTION OF SHERLOCK HOLMES Since appearing in 1887, incarnations of the Sherlock Holmes character have appeared in countless literary works, films and television adaptations. From Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original storybook setting to modern-day London and New York, Sherlock Holmes is popping up everywhere. Conan DOYLE’S ORIGINAL WORKS

HOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTERS

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote four fulllength Sherlock Holmes novels, starting with A Study in Scarlet, which was published in 1887. An additional 56 short stories, compiled into five books, make up the rest of the Sherlock Holmes canon. THE BIG SCREEN

Holmes’ first (albeit very short) on-screen appearance was in the 1900 silent film Sherlock Holmes Baffled. Arguably most notable of the silver screen Sherlocks, though, is Basil Rathbone (opposite), who brought the detective to life for 14 adventures between 1939 and 1946. Widely thought to be one of the most common characters in the history of cinema, Sherlock Holmes has been played by more than 70 actors in over 200 movies.

Sherlock Holmes catapulted to the forefront of popular culture again in 2009 with the release of Warner Bros.’ action mystery film Sherlock Holmes, directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Robert Downey Jr. in the titular role, Jude Law as Watson and Rachel McAdams as femme fatale Irene Adler. The film garnered positive reviews and earned more than $500 million at the box office. Downey and Law reprised their roles in a 2011 sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which was also a commercial success. TAKING OVER TELEVISION

Following the success of the Warner Bros. film, two modern adaptations of the

SHERLOCK ON STAGE

While the first person to portray Sherlock Holmes on stage was John Webb, William Gillette is possibly the most well-known stage actor to take on the character. Gillette wrote, directed and starred in the popular play entitled Sherlock Holmes in seven different Broadway productions from 1899 to 1930. The part was eventually taken over by Harry Arthur Saintsbury, who played Holmes more than 1,400 times in Gillette’s production. Two musicals, Baker Street (1965) and Sherlock Holmes: The Musical (1988), have also been produced, as well as a ballet. A New York production of William Gillette’s Sherlock Holmes, circa 1900. Sherlock Holmes story hit the small screen. In the BBC version, Sherlock sees flatmates and friends Holmes and Watson (played by Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman) assisting the Metropolitan Police Service with various mysteries in and around London, with Watson documenting their adventures on his personal blog. In CBS’ Elementary, Johnny Lee Miller plays the titular character as a former drug addict who, after being ousted from Scotland Yard, is forced to relocate to New York and live with sober companion Dr. Joan Watson, played by Lucy Liu. Sherlock Holmes on television has a local connection as well. From 1997 to 2000, YTV aired the Winnipegfilmed TV series The Adventures of Shirley Holmes, which followed Holmes’ great grand-neice as she solves mysteries in an around a fictional Canadian town. Basil Rathbone (above) starred as Sherlock Holmes – with Nigel Bruce’s Dr. Watson – in 14 films between 1939 and 1946. Rathbone’s portrayal is widely praised for its faith to the original text, and his version of the character endures as one of the defining visual representations of Conan Doyle’s sleuth.

SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE CASE OF THE JERSEY LILY

FACT IN FICTION Sometimes, the most interesting stories can be derived from actual life events – and filled with characters influenced by real people. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle drew inspiration from the sights, sounds and people of 19th-century Britain to create the Sherlock Holmes world, even basing the titular character himself on people he’d worked with and admired in his own life. Like Conan Doyle, playwright Katie Forgette blended fact with fiction to create her own Sherlock Holmes story. But where did these memorable characters come from, and who was the real Jersey Lily?

success, Wilde began an affair with Lord Alfred Douglas and was later arrested, then i mprisoned for homosexuality. Within the dialogue, playwright Katie Forgette makes several references to Wilde’s works and personal letters.

SHERLOCK HOLMES

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was inspired to create the character of Sherlock Holmes by real-life surgeon Dr. Joseph Bell. Conan Doyle worked under Bell at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh as a clerk and, like Holmes, Bell was known for drawing large conclusions from the smallest observations. During his career, Bell was occasionally involved in police investigations with forensic scientist Sir Henry Littlejohn, also cited as an influence for the Sherlock Holmes character.

LILLIE LANGTRY

OSCAR WILDE

Born Emilie Charlotte Le Breton, Lillie Langtry (also spelled Lily Langtry in the United States) was an English actress who, in addition to starring in many stage plays, was known for her relationships with several noblemen. Langtry pursued a career in show business at the suggestion of her close friend Oscar Wilde. The subject of widespread public and media interest, Langtry was involved with the Earl of Shrewsbury, Prince Louis of Battenberg and, most famously, the Prince of Wales. The Prince spent a considerable amount of

money on the affair, building private retreats for the couple and once complained to her, “I’ve spent enough on you to build a battleship.” PROFESSOR MORIARTY

Several real-world criminals are speculated to have served as the basis for Sherlock Holmes’ primary nemesis, Professor Moriarty. Prime suspect is Adam Worth, a criminal mastermind who started off as a bounty jumper, pickpocket and bank robber in the United States before forming his own criminal network in the United Kingdom. Some of his notable crimes include personally stealing a painting of Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire and $500,000 worth of uncut diamonds from South Africa. In his stories, Conan Doyle

has Sherlock Holmes compare Professor Moriarty to a “latter-day Jonathan Wild,” who was a notorious London underworld figure known for blackmail, bribery and collecting rewards for valuables he stole himself. ABDUL KARIM

Abdul Karim, also known as “the Munshi,” was a former Royal Household servant who rose to be the personal attendant and close companion of Queen Victoria. Their friendship caused tension within the Royal Household, and violated many Victorian taboos of race and class. After her death, Victoria’s son dismissed Karim from court and ordered that all letters, photographs and other remnants of their relationship be destroyed.

ON SATURDAY, APRIL 26, ROYAL MTC HOSTED THE HONORABLE STEVEN FLETCHER,

MP for Charleswood-St.James-Assiniboia, and Dr. Rick Wishart from Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada for the unveiling of a National Historic Sites plaque, which has been installed on Market Avenue. Mr. Fletcher spoke about theatre’s ability to help us engage our best human instincts, when we judge a building not by the façade, but by the stories and impact that happen inside the walls. Our building was designed for functionality, durability and strength – all virtues of a theatre company as well as its home. Beauty takes place on and behind the stage, and in the interaction between actors and audiences, as well as in the building itself. Artistic Director Steven Schipper praised the architecture, as well as the building’s larger purpose: “People are sometimes surprised when they hear that our theatre has been designated a national historic site. After all, it’s only 44 years old, and its austere beauty and studied functionality haven’t always been appreciated. … [but] I think of this building, both onstage and off, as a near-perfect space. Something almost spiritual, certainly magical, takes place in this theatre, and inspires in our citizens tolerance, mutual respect and empathy.”

THE HEART OF ROBIN HOOD NOVEMBER 11 – DECEMBER 6

Makes your heart

leap and your feet stomp – THE PATRIOT LEDGER

So what can you expect when you come to The Heart of Robin Hood? Icelandic director Gisli Örn Gardarsson takes the reins after scoring rave reviews for previous productions at the Royal Shakespeare Company and the American Repertory Theater. Our version will showcase the same elements that wowed those audiences: eye-popping adventure, amazing fight choreography and thrilling swordplay. The Heart of Robin Hood is a visual spectacle with actors sliding down ramps, flying from ropes and making daring entrances. Add in some rollicking humour, epic romance and an original score performed live by contemporary folk music group Parsonsfield, and this show truly has something for everyone.

As it turns out, Robin Hood as the “noble outlaw” is a rather recent invention. When Robin first made an appearance in the 12th century, he was anything but a lordly philanthropist. According to playwright David Farr, Robin had been “civilized” over the years and he thought it would be fun to return the English anti-hero to his darker roots. In other words, forget everything you ever knew about Robin Hood.

Director of Royal MTC before the Board hired him as Artistic Director in 1989. Since then Steven, along with general managers Zaz Bajon (now retired) and Camilla Holland, has kept Royal MTC on a steady and successful course. On September 29 the Royal MTC Board, at the suggestion of Camilla Holland, made an exciting and fitting tribute to recognize Steven’s silver anniversary, announcing the Royal MTC Endowment Fund would be re-named in his honour. Steven responded to the announcement by saying, “I am both honoured and humbled by the theatre’s thoughtful tribute, but I should actually be thanking them for all they’ve given me over the past quarter century. I did not make Royal MTC. Royal MTC made me.”

Steven Schipper PHOTO BY JERRY GRAJEWSKI

THE CASE OF THE Re-named Fund In 1986, Artistic Director Rick McNair hired a promising young Montreal director to helm Brighton Beach Memoirs. At the time, Steven Schipper had directed fewer than 10 plays, but Rick saw something special in Steven and was eager to share it with all Manitobans. Brighton Beach Memoirs might have been Steven’s first play at our theatre, but it was certainly not his last. In May 2014 Steven Schipper celebrated his 25th anniversary as Artistic Director of the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. After attending McGill University and Bishop’s University, Steven graduated from the National Theatre School of Canada in 1978. Steven served for two years as Associate 20

The impetus to launch an endowment fund to support Royal MTC started with Steven. Past Board Chair Kerry Dangerfield remembers Steven presenting this idea to the Board in a “quiet and convincing manner.” Steven took seriously the proverb, “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second best time is now.” The Royal MTC Endowment Fund is like that tree; it has the potential to grow and provide shade and comfort for theatre lovers in the future. Steven’s vision inspired Endowment Campaign co-chairs Gail Asper and Maureen Watchorn, as well as Endowment Director Leona MacDonald, to work with hundreds of individual donors, corporations and foundations to propel the theatre into a bright future. The Royal MTC Endowment Fund was established in 2001 through The Winnipeg Foundation, with a goal to ensure financial viability and artistic integrity for the theatre. Thanks to those who have contributed in the past few years, the fund has grown to more than $16.5 million in market value. During the 2013/14 season, the Endowment’s investment income

Royal MTC/MBA Lawyers Play HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING

How to raise money without really trying Actually, the 2014 Lawyers Play succeeded because of a lot of hard work. But because it was so much fun, it didn’t feel like we were really trying! From April 29 to May 3, the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre (Royal MTC) and the Manitoba Bar Association (MBA) presented How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying at the Tom Hendry Warehouse. Royal MTC’s 22nd Lawyers Play would not have been possible without the partnership of the MBA and the sponsorship of PwC. Since its inception in 1990, the annual Lawyers Play has been an important fundraising event for Royal MTC and the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, raising over $850,000. The support of our patrons, donors, program advertisers and

sponsors ensures we continue to offer incredible theatre at accessible prices for all Manitobans. For this production, the cast put in hundreds of volunteer hours and their hard work and dedication had audience members raving and giving standing ovations each night. Winnipeg’s legal community, along with friends and family, showed overwhelming support with almost 1,300 attendees at five performances, including three sold-out shows. Royal MTC extends a heartfelt thanks to the talented cast and hardworking crew (okay, so we did really try), as well as our many volunteers, sponsors, advertisers and audience members.

ARMSTRONG’S WAR

Playwright’s Notes BY COLLEEN MURPHY It is said that war is the ultimate test of character, whether you are a soldier or a civilian. Down through the ages, writers and dramatists have directly or indirectly used war to press down hard on their characters in order to explore notions of honour, courage and hope, as well as to protest the hellishness of war. I think of Stephen Crane’s novel The Red Badge of Courage (American Civil War), Sean O’Casey’s play Juno and the Paycock (Irish Civil War), Erich Maria Remarque’s novel All Quiet on the Western Front (First World War), Euripides’ play The Trojan Women (Peloponnesian War, 430–404 BC), Tim O’Brien’s collection of short stories The Things They Carried (Vietnam War), Shakespeare’s Henry V (Battle of Agincourt

in 1415 during the Hundred Years’ War), Ernest Hemingway’s novels For Whom the Bell Tolls (Spanish Civil War) and A Farewell to Arms (First World War), and Pat Barker’s Regeneration Trilogy (First World War): Regeneration, The Eye in the Door and The Ghost Road, the latter of which won her the Man Booker. Here in Canada, there is Timothy Findley’s novel The Wars (First World War), and Joseph Boyden’s Three Day Road. I cannot list all the war films except to say that Roberto Rossellini’s war trilogy: Rome Open City, Paisan and Germany Year Zero (Italians and Germans in the Second World War) and Terrence Malick’s film adaptation of James Jones’ novel The Thin Red Line (American soldiers in the Pacific Theatre in the Second World War) are essential viewing for anyone interested in the complexities of war. All these works examine the choices people have to make under intolerable pressure – some are heroic choices, some are not, but every choice creates consequences that people carry into their future. I read all the books about war and watched all the films, but the most important thing I did in order to write Armstrong’s War was to talk to a former Canadian soldier who shared what it felt like to be a soldier. He gave me insight into the notion that ‘death is always your battle.’ It does not matter which war you fight, you will always fight yourself and you will tell stories about what happened. As human beings we can imagine almost anything, but we must also tell the truth of something. It takes courage to face reality. The poet Goethe said, ‘Few people have the imagination for reality,’ but I believe most people do. Theatre gives each of us that possibility. october/november 2014

Setting the Stage

ARMSTRONG’S WAR

A Canadian honour guard carries the remains of Canadian army Pvt. Sebastien Courcy during a sundown ceremony at Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan, July 17, 2009. Courcy was killed in action July 16, 2009, while participating in counterinsurgency combat operations in the Panjwaii district of Afghanistan.

Staging the War in Afghanistan BY DR. GEORGE BURI corporal michael armstrong: We’re tasked with helping the government of Afghanistan serve the needs of their people by separating insurgents from the local populations – except you can’t defeat an insurgency, best you can do is marginalize it. halley: Does that mean we’re not going to win? In 2001, shortly after the September 11th terrorist attacks carried out by Al Qaeda, the United States launched what President George Bush called the “War on Terror.” This war included invasions of both Afghanistan and Iraq, although Iraq had no connections to the attacks. In order to facilitate such an ambitious military undertaking, the United States called on NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) allies, including Canada. Canadian politicians, not wanting to take part in an invasion of Iraq, chose to participate in the war in Afghanistan, where the United States removed the Taliban government, who october/november 2014

were accused of sheltering Al Qaeda and its leader Osama Bin Laden. At the time, the Afghan war was considered to be more or less “over” and the plan for Canadian involvement in combat was to be minimal. The Taliban were quickly removed from power and an alliance of northern warlords friendly to the United States put in place. But the war lasted much longer than many Western observers predicted. As Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham stated, “I think everybody was convinced that Afghanistan was a lot further down the road to recovery than it

Setting the Stage really was.” The Taliban government had drawn support from the majority Pashtun ethnic group and had been financed and supplied by factions within Pakistan. Its defeat brought about resentment on the part of those who now found themselves without political power. The mostly non-Pashtun regime created by the US (and led by President Hamid Karzai) had little support in the Pashtun-dominated South, particularly in the region around Kandahar, the country’s second-largest city. The result was the reorganization of the Taliban into a guerrilla insurgency that waged a war against the Afghan government and the NATO occupying force supporting it. Canadian soldiers stationed in Kandahar played a major role in attempts to defeat the Taliban insurgency.

military confrontations but on gaining the support of the Afghan population. As the United States discovered in Vietnam decades earlier, it was impossible to defeat an enemy that could continue to find new recruits from a supportive population. By the mid-2000s, Canadians were suffering greater than expected casualties in a war that claimed tens of thousands of Afghan lives, and further alienated the civilian population. By the late 2000s, Canadian support for the war at home was declining. More and more observers, including Canadian and American politicians, conceded that the result of the over decade-long war would be the withdrawal of NATO troops without any clear “victory” over the Taliban. In 2014, the last Canadian soldiers left Afghanistan, ending a 12-year involvement in which 158 soldiers were killed and more than 2,000 wounded.

The outcome of NATO’s war depended not just on defeating Taliban fighters in

Q&A WITH JUSTIN OTTO

Q

Director Robb Paterson describes your Michael as a very pragmatic counterpart to Halley’s more hopeful nature. What else can you tell us about him, and the interesting dynamic between these two characters?

A

Michael is someone I sometimes forget is a young man. He’s had to make some decisions beyond his years and war has hardened him. I believe this pragmatism Robb speaks of comes from Michael’s dedication to being a soldier. Decisions of such magnitude – those with human life at stake – mould a practical, some may say distant or heartless type. Life is now measured like rations, hope for one’s own sifted out. This breeds the central conflict of these two characters – they both value life but in radically different blueprints and are ignorant to the others’

opinion. A stubborn young man versus the preteen optimist; we’re in for a battle. This is your first appearance at Royal MTC and, moreover, in a major role. What are you looking forward to most about being part of this production?

Besides this Warehouse stage, the large general audience and the shiny dressing rooms? I’m looking forward to performing the sort of play I’ve been playing in bars,

Curtain Calls run-down studio spaces and Fringe venues – a piece of theatre that throws a few punches. As a two-hander it’s intimate, which I hope is amplified by this fantastic space. It being a major role brings pressure to deliver but more importantly the opportunity to play and explore each and every night. As a bonus it’s under the direction of Robb Paterson and the fantastic eyes, minds and expertise that play a hand in every production here at Royal MTC. What do you hope audiences get out of seeing the play?

I want the audience to find the hope within these two characters because the play hits at so many personal issues. I hope they get angry, I hope they find the humour, I hope they form some new strong opinions and rethink some old ones. Feel with Michael and Halley, not just for them. Something Michael says sticks with me with each reading: “I chose this.” I hope the audience can leave the theatre with an idea of what that means to them. And for them to like me because, let’s be honest, I’d love to be welcomed back here!

Q&A WITH HEATHER RUSSELL

Q

What attracted you to the script for Armstrong’s War? What were your initial thoughts after reading it for the first time?

A

The script is smart and honest. I fell in love with the characters – Colleen Murphy has given them such compelling voices. When I first read it, I thought, “Halley is me when I was 12!” Your character, Halley, is younger than you are in real life and also lives with a disability. As you move into the rehearsal process, what challenges do you think you might october/november 2014

ARMSTRONG’S WAR

Heather Russell

face preparing for this role? What can be learned when taking on a character that’s so different from yourself?

As someone with full use of my body, I don’t often stop to think about what it would be like if my mobility was limited. To get a glimpse of what life is like for Halley, I’m meeting with a young woman who uses a wheelchair. Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to portray young characters (last season I played a 17-year-old and a six-year-old). I try not to think of them as younger than me, and I embrace their hopes and fears as though they are my own. It’s exciting to explore characters with different life circumstances and to discover that, at their core, they are more similar to me than I first realized. Halley and Michael are two people from very different walks of life. What’s so special about watching them connect and learn about one another throughout the play?

It’s lovely to witness two characters that initially seem so different fumble, fight, and ultimately find a friend where they least expect it. I think all human beings are on a quest for acceptance. Michael and Halley’s journey encourages us to risk being vulnerable and to challenge our assumptions along the way. Be sure to check out the full interviews with Justin and Heather on royalmtc.ca

NEXT AT THE EMPRESS OF THE BLUES REIGNS AT THE WAREHOUSE

THE DEVIL’S MUSIC

THE LIFE AND BLUES OF BESSIE SMITH

DECEMBER 2–20

If I ain’t good enough to use your front door, then I ain’t good enough to use your stage. Miche Braden PHOTO BY T. CHARLES ERICKSON

– Bessie

After a whites-only theatre asks Bessie Smith to use the back door, she walks. Instead, she sets up at a Memphis buffet flat and we’re in the audience for her final performance. The daughter of a preacher, Bessie Smith overcame Southern poverty to become the greatest and most influential classic Blues singer of the early 20th century, earning the title “Empress of the Blues.” In her prime, Bessie was the highest-paid black performer, and her first record sold 780,000 copies. She recorded with Louis Armstrong, crossed lines of segregation through her music, and paved the way for Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin. In 1980, Bessie Smith was inducted into the Blues Foundation’s Hall of Fame and, in 1989, into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Originator of the title role, Miche (pronounced Micky) Braden’s performance in The Devil’s Music in New York earned the show four coveted award nominations: Drama Desk “Best Actress in a Musical”; Off Broadway Alliance “Special Event”; and The Lucille Lortel and Audelco “Best Solo Show.” Accompanied by a live band, Miche delivers a love letter to Bessie Smith in this memorable show. Don’t miss it!
