Message from the Artistic Director

Life isn’t actually a cabaret. Would that it were. We could party our way into sated oblivion: “War? Old news. Politics? Boring. Injustice? Not my problem. Just fill my glass and play that song. You know, the one with the great beat.” It’s a seductive philosophy, and Kander and Ebb’s nightclub habitués aren’t alone in embracing it. Don Henley of Eagles fame sang in the 1980s, “They’re pickin’ up the prisoners and puttin’ ’em in a pen. And all she wants to do is dance, dance.” In 2011, a Britney Steven Schipper

Spears music video celebrated the apocalypse with an underground rave, and urged us to “keep on dancing

until the world ends.” These artists depict a world in which evil triumphs because good men (and women) do nothing but party. That’s why musicals like Cabaret and institutions like the new Museum for Human Rights are so important. They remind us of the perils that lurk behind passivity and a mindless pursuit of pleasure. Of course, every living creature craves pleasure, so the musical dresses up its cautionary tale in garter belts, sinuous bentwood furniture, and some of the cleverest songs ever written. The museum, well, it’s coiled inside a building as seductive as the come-hither index finger in all our Cabaret ads. Artists like Kander and Ebb and architect Antoine Predock enthrall us with beauty, so that wisdom enters not just through our minds, but through all our senses. In the musical and the museum, we learn to surrender selfishness to compassion, to trade apathy for action, and to find pleasure in sharing our good fortune with all of humanity. Yours always,

CABARET

The Evolution of Cabaret “Christopher – this city is doomed, more surely than Sodom ever was. These people don’t even realize how low they have sunk. Evil doesn’t know itself here.” – poet w.h. auden, writing to christopher isherwood about berlin Cabaret, which is based on Christopher Isherwood’s autobiographical novella originally titled Goodbye to Berlin and later included in The Berlin Stories, was published to great acclaim in 1939. The book featured people he personally encountered while living in Berlin from 1929 to 1932. Isherwood was the only English-speaking writer living there at the time to write a book about the period. According to his friend Stephen Spender, “Berlin was the tension, the poverty, the anger, the prostitution, the hope and despair thrown out on the streets. It was the blatant rich at the smart restaurants, the prostitutes in army top boots at corners, and the violent youths who suddenly emerged from nowhere and shouted: ‘Germany awake!’”

One of Isherwood’s stories, entitled simply Sally Bowles, piqued the attention of eminent playwright John van Druten, who decided to turn it into the play entitled I am a Camera, the first sentence in Isherwood’s book. The play was produced with great success in the fall of 1951, and became a British film in 1955. The idea of turning it into a musical began when playwright Joe COSTUME SKETCHES BY TAMARA MARIE KUCHERAN: KIT KAT GIRLS

Berlin was a cultural mecca in the 1920s, attracting aspiring actresses and singers from North America and Britain. By 1927, Berlin offered more than 75 cabarets and nightclubs and 49 theatres. Most of these venues featured capacity crowds every night. Two years later, it boasted 363 cinemas and 37 film companies producing 250 full-length films a year. German writer Eugen Szatmari gave the following description in his 1927 book: “Berlin at night, this light-filled, sparkling, champagne-bubbling, jazz-droning, noisy, too-noisy, always-overflowing Berlin night… there are two kinds of places: those one talks about and those one doesn’t talk about, but frequents just the same.” Among those not talked about were cabarets like the Kit Kat Klub, where every table featured a telephone that was used to contact someone interesting at another table. 6

Setting the Stage Masteroff took the material to producer Harold Prince, who then brought it to songwriters John Kander and Fred Ebb. Cabaret, starring Joel Grey and Jill Haworth and directed by Harold Prince, opened November 20, 1966, at the Broadhurst Theatre on Broadway. It received eight Tony Awards and numerous other awards before closing in 1969. Cabaret then toured the continent, including a Royal MTC production at the Centennial Concert Hall, starring Jay Fox and Tandy Cronyn, which opened on November 10, 1969.

CABARET

In the 1990s, Cabaret experienced a number of successful revivals, beginning with a new version directed by Sam Mendes for the Donmar Warehouse in London’s West End in 1993. Mendes’ version was vastly different from the original production and conventional first revival, and featured a highly sexualized portrayal by Alan Cumming as the Emcee – for which he later won an Olivier Award. Cumming later reprised the role in the 1998 Broadway revival, which was based on Mendes’ production and co-directed and choreographed by Rob Marshall. It later went on to become the third-longest-running revival in Broadway musical history and earned 10 Tony Award nominations, winning four. Royal MTC’s 1998 production of Cabaret was also a critical and commercial hit, selling out numerous performances before the end of the run. Its director, Michael Shamata, saw it as a play about choices. “We are presented with a community on the verge of doom. Every character is given the opportunity to recognize the impending doom and choose their path through it. Some choose wisely. Some choose irresponsibly. They are dancing on the edge of a dangerous precipice.” Most recently, Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall reprised their respective roles as director and co-director/choreographer after Roundabout Theatre Company announced plans to bring back their acclaimed 1998 production to Broadway. Cumming returned to the project and starred again as the Emcee while Academy Award-nominated actress Michelle Williams made her Broadway debut as Sally Bowles. Following her limited engagement, Emma Stone replaced Williams in the role. Reprinted from Ovation Volume 6, Number 1 (October 1998). Revised December 2014.

NEXT AT MISERY LOVES COMEDY

VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE february 11 to march 7

As February transitions to March, we often find ourselves in no man’s land. We’re no longer trapped in winter’s clutches but the spring thaw still feels out of reach. In other words: time for a comedy. Christopher Durang’s hilarious Tony Award-winning play is the perfect tonic for a long, cold winter. The New York production starring David Hyde Pierce and Sigourney Weaver was Broadway’s comedy hit of 2013. In this contemporary mash-up of Chekhov plays, Vanya and Sonia learn that their movie star sister intends to sell the family home, throwing their static lives for a loop. A master of offbeat comedy, Durang shows a deft touch as he balances elements of farce with the bittersweet compassion that made Chekhov’s plays such enduring classics. If you’re feeling a vague sense of Chekhovian déjà vu, know this: Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike isn’t based on Chekhov, nor is it a parody of Chekhov. Rather, Durang says, “It’s as if I took characters and themes from Chekhov and put them in a blender.” So if you attended ChekhovFest, you might hear echoes of the Russian playwright’s works. But if you’ve never seen a Chekhov play, that’s okay too. You’ll be laughing just as hard as everyone else.

Joe Masteroff Book Joe Masteroff is an American playwright, actor, author and lyricist who won the 1967 Tony Award for Best Musical as part of the

creative team behind Cabaret. Masteroff graduated from Temple University and served in the United States Air Force before turning his focus to theatre, studying at the American Theatre Wing and making his Broadway debut as an actor in The Prescott Proposals (1953). His first play, The Warm Peninsula, opened on Broadway in 1959 and, in 1963, Masteroff wrote the book for the musical She Loves Me, which garnered him a Tony Award nomination for Best Author of a Musical.

John Van Druten Playwright John Van Druten was an English playwright and theatre director who become one of London’s most successful dramatists of the early 1930s. Van Druten studied law at the University of London and served as a solicitor before coming to prominence with Young Woodley, which was initially banned in London by the Lord Chamberlain’s office due to its then-controversial portrayal of a schoolboy falling in love with his headmaster’s wife. His popular works include Old Acquaintance (1940), The Voice of the Turtle (1943), I Remember Mama (1944), Bell, Book and Candle (1950) and I am a Camera (1951), which was adapted from Christopher Isherwood’s novel Goodbye to Berlin and eventually served as the basis for Cabaret. Van Druten directed the last nine stagings of his own plays and the first production of The King and I at the St. James Theatre in 1951. He also published two novels and a book of his own work.

Christopher Isherwood Author Christopher Isherwood was an EnglishAmerican novelist and playwright best known for his stories about Berlin in the early 1930s. Throughout his career, Isherwood penned more than 40 works that included full-length novels, plays, autobiographies, film scripts and scholastic papers. As a young adult,

Artists Isherwood rejected his upper-middle-class upbringing and moved to Berlin, having been drawn to the city by its reputation for sexual freedom. It was there that he met many of his real-life friends who later served as inspiration for characters in his novels. Some of Isherwood’s most famous works include Goodbye to Berlin (the source material for the Broadway play and film Cabaret) and his critically acclaimed 1964 novel A Single Man, which was later adapted for the screen by fashion icon Tom Ford and starred Colin Firth.

PRIVATE LIVES

HELL

TO WITH LOVE.

january 28 – february 14

Many of the literature’s most memorable love stories have played on our stages. If we’ve learned anything from Pride and Prejudice, Gone With the Wind and Jane Eyre, it’s the road to happiness has its share of blind corners. And in the case of Private Lives, the lovers are driving a stylish two-seater with a bit of road rage. Noël Coward has been selected as this year’s Master Playwright for a reason. Despite humble beginnings, he rose to the pinnacle of society on the strength of his charm, wit and genius. Coward was a celebrated composer, actor, singer, director, novelist, painter and a trendsetter in men’s fashion. One of his most popular works, Private Lives has stood the test of time thanks to sparkling dialogue, sophisticated characters and the play’s relevance to our celebrity-obsessed culture. Somehow it never goes out of style to watch part of beautiful people behaving badly. Ironically, our final performance of Private Lives is on Valentine’s Day. Make it a date!

Emerging Artists OUT OF THE WINGS AND TAKING FLIGHT For every beautiful work we see on stage, there’s a devoted crew of talented people who work behind the scenes to make these projects come to life. In Winnipeg, we’re lucky to have an abundance of up-and-coming young talent dedicated to our local arts and culture community. This year, Winnipeg’s theatre partners wanted to shift the spotlight backstage and highlight some of the emerging artists you don’t necessarily see centre stage, but are key to the productions you’ll see this theatre season. As Musical Director of Cabaret, Joseph Tritt (right) brings to life the Tony Award-winning production’s vivacious score and transforms the atmosphere of the John Hirsch Mainstage into the sensuous and exhilarating Kit Kat Klub. A graduate of the University of Manitoba, Joseph also studied at the Manhattan School of Music and has spent the last few years working as an assistant or apprentice musical director for Royal MTC, Dry Cold Productions and Rainbow Stage. His hard work has paid off, with Joseph landing the lead role as Music Director for The Producers at Rainbow Stage this past summer and next year’s Les Misérables in addition to his work on Cabaret.

Calling all bookworms! JOIN ROYAL MTC’S BOOK CLUB We know theatre is a communal activity, and sometimes much of the fun in seeing a show is chatting about it afterwards. Why not go one step further and add a great read into the mix? Christopher Isherwood’s 1939 novella Goodbye to Berlin will accompany our January production of Cabaret. Meet fellow enthusiasts and immerse yourself in the world of the story! First published in 1939, Goodbye to Berlin is a semi-autobiographical account of Isherwood’s time in Berlin in the 1930s. The book was then turned into the Tony Award-winning musical Cabaret (1966) and the film Cabaret (1972), for which Liza Minnelli won an Academy Award playing Sally Bowles.

Thank You for a Memorable Year BY HEIDI STRUCK In December, I stood at the top of a massive slide peering into The Heart of Robin Hood’s Sherwood Forest 30 feet below me on the John Hirsch Mainstage. I turned a shade of green similar to the colour of the slide and took the stairs back down, marvelling that our incredible cast slid down it with ease night after night. In fact, this is just one of many experiences that have made my first eight months as the Individual Giving Manager for Royal MTC extremely 36

memorable and rewarding. So it only makes sense that I would take this opportunity, on behalf of Royal MTC, to highlight and thank all our donors who contributed to the success of 2014 through either a first-time, monthly or renewed gift. During this past year we hosted a number of special events that gave community members a chance to gather, celebrate and support the theatre.

Individual Giving The annual Lawyers Play, which raises funds for Royal MTC and our Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, was held April 29 to May 3 at the Tom Hendry Warehouse. The hilarious musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying was a hit and we look forward to seeing the lawyers dance and sing their hearts out in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, May 5 to 9, 2015. On September 29, we celebrated Steven Schipper’s 25th anniversary as Artistic Director and officially renamed the Endowment Fund in his honour. In celebration of this admirable achievement, more than 150 donors gave over $100,000 to the Endowment Fund in honour of Steven. These funds will be held in perpetuity at The Winnipeg Foundation, and are eligible for a matching grant from Canadian Heritage. Thank you so much!

The 32nd annual Black & White Ball took place at The Fort Garry Hotel on November 1, with more thanj 440 guests in attendance. It was a great party that celebrated a Cabaret theme. Thank you to everyone for making this year’s ball one of the most successful ever! Royal MTC’s special events wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of leadership volunteers. Thanks are due to the Lawyers Play committee members and the hard-working casts of each show, the original Endowment campaign co-chairs Maureen Watchorn and Gail Asper and the amazing Black & White Ball committee, chaired in 2014 by Michelle Weinberg. Thank you to them all! And to you – our audience and donors – we are so appreciative of your generous support this past year and we look forward to a fantastic 2015 with you!

ARMSTRONG’S WAR

Justin Otto in the Tom Hendry Warehouse production of Armstrong’s War. PHOTO BY BRUCE MONK

This January, the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre is hitting the road with award-winning playwright Colleen Murphy’s Armstrong’s War. After a critically-acclaimed run at our Tom Hendry Warehouse, the cast and crew are eager to bring this topical and engaging story to audiences across Manitoba and northwestern Ontario. Royal MTC considers regional touring to be a critical part of our mission to bring theatre to as many people as possible. Thanks to the generous support of Calm Air, we’re thrilled to venture to Churchill for the first time since 2010’s tour, Tempting Providence. Winnipeg is so fortunate to enjoy an abundance of arts and culture options that we often take professional theatre for granted inside the Perimeter. We don’t realise how much it means to people living in rural communities to have high-calibre theatre come to them. As actor David Fox said, “often they are the most appreciative audience you will find.” Royal MTC would like to thank our generous tour supporters: Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, CIBC, MPI, MacDon, the Thomas Sill Foundation, the Manitoba Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Black & White Ball

Divine Decadence, Darling! On Saturday, November 1, 2014, the Fort Garry Hotel’s Grand Ballroom was transformed into a red-hot cabaret for the 32nd Black & White Ball, a recordbreaking fundraising event with more than 440 guests. The night began with a special performance by Laura Olafson, followed by dancing well into the night to the musical talents of the Danny Kramer Dance Band. The Black & White Ball is the largest annual fundraiser for Royal MTC and the money raised supports the creation of world-class theatre, including this production of Cabaret.
