greetings Since the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre is a nonprofit charity, we are totally unacquainted with the cut-throat principles of corporate success so eloquently dramatized in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. In the arts, success is the result of our warm, fuzzy belief in creativity and community service. People rise through the ranks on the basis of intelligence, hard work and honesty, and no one ever makes a pass at a co-worker. Ever. Sure, money’s important but, in the theatre, money always takes a back seat to humanity, compassion and artistic integrity. In fact, at MTC, we worry less often about money because the Manitoba Bar Association generously donates their time and talent each year to raise funds for us with a production like the one you’re seeing tonight. Ironically, they’re really stretching themselves in this one, pretending to be manipulative, back-stabbing, greedy corporate sharks, when in reality their kindness and generosity make them exemplary corporate citizens, giving back to the community instead of taking for themselves. That brotherhood of man they sing about near the end of the play? That’s the guiding light for these lawyers and judges, who know first-hand about the noble tie that binds all human hearts and minds. Yours always,

Steven Schipper

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is the story of J. Pierrepont Finch, who, with the help of the book How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, becomes the chairman of the board of the World Wide Wicket Company after starting out as a window washer. The production you are about to see includes a cast entirely comprised of volunteers who are law students and lawyers. While they are professionals in their offices (or students who shortly will be professionals), their performance may also lead you to believe that they could pursue a professional career in the theatre. Their commitment and dedication to their craft and this performance is unmatched. While Mr. Finch may have succeeded in business without trying, the success of this production is entirely due to the hard work and efforts of the cast and crew. I would like to thank Robb Paterson, director of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Chuck McEwen, the MTC/MBA committee members and all the staff at MTC for their continued hard work which makes this event such a success. To date, these joint productions have raised almost $900,000 for MTC. Finally, I want to thank all the corporate sponsors for their generous support of this event and their contribution to the fundraising efforts of MTC. Finally, I thank each of you for attending tonight and supporting MTC by doing so.

artists Gail Asper

Krista Boryskavich

Miss Jones

Miss Krumholtz

Gail is delighted to be celebrating her 24th anniversary of participation in the MTC/MBA productions. How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying has been one of her favourite musicals since childhood, when her father used to lead the family in singalongs of “A Secretary is Not a Toy.” Other past favourite roles include Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls, Nurse Ratchet in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Mama Rose in Gypsy. When not treading the boards at MTC, Gail plays the role of President of The Asper Foundation, which has been spearheading the creation of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, set to open this September. Gail would like to thank her husband Mike and sons Stephen and Jonathan for their love and support and would like to dedicate this performance to her late father, Israel Asper and to the greatest Miss Jones ever, Susie Catellier.

After a seven-year absence, Krista is thrilled to be returning to the stage in her third MTC/ MBA production in the role of Miss Krumholtz – a busybody of a secretary whose favourite time of day is her coffee break. In real life, Krista is the Acting City Solicitor for the City of Winnipeg, practising primarily in the areas of municipal and commercial law. Krista would like to thank her family, friends and colleagues for their support, and to the tremendous crew at MTC for their hard work and dedication in making this show a reality!

Paul Cooper J.B. Biggley

Andrea Bellhouse Secretary

BIO SPOILER ALERT Paul will not be playing a Nazi this year.

Andrea is pleased to be joining the cast of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying for her first MTC/MBA collaboration! A music major in a former life, Andrea is currently a second year law student. Living proof that you can take the girl out of music, but you can never take the music out of the girl! Andrea thanks her family for continuing to support her performance addiction, and thanks to the creative team (Robb, Melinda, Chuck, Jason, Bill, Sofia, Eric), fellow cast members, and everyone else behind the scenes for welcoming her into the fold. 8

In the four years since his last appearance in the MTC/MBA show, Paul has taken on the far more serious role of fatherhood, and is happily failing miserably at being a good role model for his son Declan. He has also taken on the even more seriouser role of Crown Attorney at Manitoba Justice – Prosecutions and continues to try his best to behave in that environment. More rehearsal is required. Paul would like to thank his new employer, the cast and crew of this year’s show who make this look far easier than it is and more fun than you could believe, and most of all his lovely wife Anne, who in addition to providing him with a lovely home and family must constantly be wondering what she did to deserve all this.

artists Tashia Dreger

Adrian Frost

Secretary/Wickette Girl

Bratt

Tashia is very excited to be back for her second MTC/MBA play, having appeared in Legally Blonde last year. Tashia has enjoyed singing, dancing and acting all her life and is thrilled to be a part of this production, which has been a lot of fun and a great experience. She would like to throw a big “thank-you” out to her friends, family and colleagues for supporting her through this show (and the final exams of law school that coincided with the final week of rehearsals).

Adrian is thrilled to be participating in his fourth MTC/MBA musical production (Chicago, The Producers and Legally Blonde). In real life, Adrian is a labour and employment lawyer at Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP, and that experience leads him to believe that certain personnel matters at the World Wide Wicket Company might be a little offside. Adrian thanks his family, friends and colleagues at TDS for their ongoing support and the great people at MTC for this opportunity. Extra special thanks and love to Kerra, Isabelle and Madeline for their tolerance and encouragement.

artists Bill Haight

Melissa Hazelton

Ovington/ Peterson-Davis

Secretary

Bill had no idea what he was signing on for when he accepted the small non-singing part of Ovington in this year’s production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. His frequent refrain throughout the many rehearsals was, “What’s with all this singing and dancing stuff?” [Edited for family consumption.] He has previously appeared in the MTC/MBA productions The Caine Mutiny Court Martial, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and The Odd Couple. He also makes frequent stand-up/sit down comedy appearances at the dinner table before the critical and sometimes appreciative audience of his wife Fia and their daughters Emma, Freja and Hanna. Bill practices civil and commercial litigation, professional governance law and health law at Duboff Edwards Haight & Schachter.

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is Melissa’s second appearance in the MTC/MBA Lawyers Play. After her debut performance in last year’s Legally Blonde, Melissa is excited to be back on stage this year and enjoying the chance to do something a little different outside of her work as a Crown Attorney. Melissa would like to extend a huge thank you to her family and friends for all of their love and support. And extra big thanks to everyone at MTC for working so hard to make us look like we know what we’re doing! Enjoy the show!

Sean Hicks Toynbee

John Harvie Womper/Henchman Sean is pleased to be participating again in the MTC/MBA production, and thanks his colleagues at Taylor McCaffrey LLP for their continued support of the Lawyers Play. This is the fourth time that John has inflicted himself upon an MTC/MBA audience, although he has been distressing other audiences from time to time with the slings and arrows of outrageous performances since starting out at the Black Hole Theatre Company over 30 years ago. John is a partner at Myers Weinberg LLP and he is grateful for the generous support of members of the firm and friends who are taking in this show. John is especially thankful to Mary Kate, Helen and Peggy (who taught him his lines) for their love, support and patience.

Jeff Hirsch Twimble/Henchman

Jeff is delighted to be appearing in his eighth Lawyers Play. Previous credits (?) include Twelve Angry Jurors (1990), The Caine Mutiny Court Martial (1992), And Then There Were None (1997), R.P. McMurphy in One Flew CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

Reannah Hocken Rosemary

After a long day in the office, rehearsals pretending to have a long day in the office were made to be a wonderful experience by the brilliant artistic team. Year after year, without fail, they turn a pack of lawyers into a talented cast of players. When not singing and dancing onstage, Reannah practises law at Restall and Restall. Thanks to all the friends, family and colleagues for attending this year, and a big thank you to Matthew for keeping her dinner warm during rehearsals. Enjoy the show!

Reannah is thrilled to be participating in her fourth MTC/MBA production, previously appearing in The Producers, Gypsy and Legally Blonde. She is very excited to have been cast as the eager Rosemary Pilkington, who knows exactly what she wants and isn’t afraid to go and get it.

artists Jamie Jurczak

Nalini Reddy

Hedy LaRue

Smitty

Jamie is thrilled to be playing Hedy in her seventh MTC/MBA Lawyers Play. It seems like just yesterday she was apologizing to her mother for her roles (and wardrobes) in Little Shop of Horrors, Cabaret and Chicago… As for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying… this might be the biggest apology yet! She wants to assure everyone that despite her various lawyer show characters over the years, her mama did raise her right! Thank you to Robbie and Bill for the opportunity to tackle Hedy. Thank you to her friends and family and colleagues at Taylor McCaffrey for supporting her need to do this year after year (and to those who suggested she should take on method acting for this role: nice try!). Thank you to her dancers at Maples Academy of Dance for constantly running lines with their teacher, and for sharing her with this show in the middle of competition season. And thank you to Mom and Shoe for everything, always.

Nalini is back for her eighth Lawyers Play, returning after a six-year hiatus brought on by her then-three year-old declaring that “Mamma lives at rehearsal.” Having played Velma Kelly in Chicago, she is pleased to be playing the friendly and fully-clothed Smitty in this year’s show. Nalini is ever grateful to her parents for all of the music and dance lessons she had growing up, and she is very thankful for their and her angelic mother-in-law’s help at home on rehearsal nights. Most importantly, she wants her boys – Brad, Kieran and Sanjay – to know how much she loves them and appreciates them putting up with many Mamma-less afternoons and evenings. When this is over, it’s mini-sticks, Minecraft and a nice Malbec! She really hopes that you enjoy the show and thanks you for coming to this fun and important fundraiser for our invaluable regional theatre.

Leith Robertson

Catherine (Kate) Kelly

Gatch/Policeman

First Scrubwoman

Catherine returns to the stage, having been in five previous MTC/MBA productions. She is thrilled to be mopping, dusting (especially certain men’s behinds!) and bossing around Second Scrubwoman (who she has become quite good friends with – it’s been great working so closely with you, Barb!) When she’s not cleaning, dancing or make googly eyes at the men in this office, she spends her days practicing Family Law. She sends much love and gratitude to her friends for their continuing love and support! 14

Close sources reveal that this could be Leith’s favourite MTC/MBA show… ever. Leith is an Associate at Pitblado Law, where he maintains an eclectic corporate/commercial practice. He is from Australia and has substituted long walks on the beach for short/awkward stumbles on the snowbanks. Leith is extremely grateful for the amazing opportunity to work with brilliant, talented people at MTC and wishes to thank his colleagues at Pitblado for all their support. CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

Steve Scarfone

Secretary/Wickette Girl

Jenkins

This is Jaime’s debut in the MTC/MBA Lawyers Play and she could not be more excited to be here! Jaime grew up wanting to be an actor (as she is sure many lawyers did!) but the closest she has gotten to a stage is practicing in the litigation department at Aikins LLP… until now that is! Love and thanks to family, friends and colleagues at Aikins who have supported her through the show! Special thanks to Reannah (the lovely Rosemary) for encouraging Jaime to be a part of the show, and thanks to all of the enormously talented cast and crew for helping her fall in love with theatre all over again!

Steve begins his biography by predicting this show will sell out, not necessarily based on its quality but rather, because the economy has finally rebounded after what seems like 75 months in the crapper. This is great news not only for community theatre, but also for manufacturers of electronics and sugary foodstuffs… and anyone else who delights in the outlay of disposable income. Steve, ever the optimist, makes this bold prediction fully aware that it may expose him to (further) contempt and ridicule.

artists This is Steve’s sixth MTC/MBA joint production but without question the most special as his beautiful daughter Olivia will be watching from the audience for the very first time (alongside her equally beautiful mom). About three and a half years ago, between Steve’s appearances in The Producers (2010) and Gypsy (2011), Olivia was born, weighing just one pound and 13 ounces. She knows all the big numbers and will be singing along. Steve is indebted to Kim – having hijacked her maternity leave (again) – for tolerating his absence from home while she expertly cared for their little girl and newborn son Michael, thereby allowing Steve to sashay, ball change and grapevine with other lawyers afflicted with delusions of grandeur. That’s all he’s got. People have short attention spans and thankfully, for what you are about to witness, even shorter memories.

Barb Shields Second Scrubwoman

Barb is excited to be involved in her third MTC/MBA musical production. After all, it includes her two biggest addictions: caffeine and knitting. Barb’s two previous shows were Little Shop of Horrors (Salvation Army Lady) and Cabaret (Frida the Band Leader). In real life, Barb practices tax law at Aikens and volunteers on the boards of the Santa Claus Parade and the St. Vital Lions Club. A special big thanks to her husband Denis Labossière for supporting her dream to be the oldest chorus girl in the show.

artists Abe Burrows Book

After studying to be a doctor and an accountant, Abe Burrows had a career in sales before becoming a successful radio script writer and writer/performer of musical parody numbers. His first Broadway libretto was Guys and Dolls, co-written with Jo Swerling, with a score by Frank Loesser. Among the musicals for which he provided librettos are Make a Wish, CanCan and Silk Stockings (both with scores by Cole Porter), Say, Darling and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (which he also directed; score by Frank Loesser). His nonmusical plays include Cactus Flower (wrote and directed) and Forty Carats (directed).

Jack Weinstock Book

Jack Weinstock, a native New Yorker who attended Columbia College and was a graduate of NYU’s Bellevue Medical College, was in private life a doctor. He did not start to write professionally until he met his collaborator Willie Gilbert, first as a patient and then as a friend. In addition to his successful writing career, “Dr. Jack” (as Weinstock’s friends called him) successfully lived two lives, one as author and one as doctor. He was medical director of a life insurance company, surgeon at two hospitals, and had a Fifth Avenue medical practice. Jack Weinstock died in 1969.

Willie Gilbert Book

Willie Gilbert, who came from Cleveland, Ohio, received a BS in education, but pursued a career as a comedian. Together Gilbert and Weinstock won Tony Awards as co-writers of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Subsequent stage credits include the 1963 musical comedy Hot Spot and the 1965 hit comedy mystery Catch Me If You Can. TV credits range from science fiction to classic children’s shows like Howdy Doody and sketches for comedian Jackie Gleason. Willie Gilbert died in 1980. CONTINUED ON PAGE 26

Music & Lyrics

One of America’s great composer/lyricists, Frank Loesser began his songwriting career during the Depression as a lyricist, contributing songs to Broadway revues and nightclub acts. In 1948 Loesser was approached by fledgling Broadway producers Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin to write music and lyrics to George Abbott’s libretto for an adaptation of the classic Brandon Thomas play Charley’s Aunt. The result, Where’s Charley?, was a hit. This led to Loesser’s next show, the hugely influential and successful Guys and Dolls (1950), also produced by Feuer and Martin, with a script by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling. In 1956 Loesser wrote the libretto, music and lyrics for his next show, The Most Happy Fella, adapted from Sidney Howard’s play They Knew What They Wanted. In 1960 he provided the score and was co-librettist for Greenwillow. His last show, Pleasures and Palaces, closed in 1965 during out-of-town try-outs.

Robb Paterson Director

The Lawyers Play – what a kick! There must be something in the water in Winnipeg; our lawyers (a lot of them anyway) can sing! And they’re funny! And they’re smart!! And they can act and they can eat!!! (“Break’s over, Steve, get away from the snack table!”) Seriously, we have all worked so hard. Thank you. Other theatre credits for the MBA include The Pyjama Game, Grease, Little Shop of Horrors, Cabaret, Chicago, Gypsy, and assisting Steven on Inherit the Wind, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Legally Blonde.

Pay for your parking by phone Did you know you can use your phone to pay at Impark lots? We recommend registering in advance at paybyphone.com for added convenience. Avoid lineups and enjoy the comfort of your car by paying for parking with your cell phone! PayByPhone eliminates the need for you to pay at a lot’s meter, place a ticket on your dash or be at risk of running out of time. Through a simple registration process, you can create an account profile that includes your vehicle details and payment option. Then, depending on where or how you park, you can use your cell phone or PayByPhone’s website or app to pay for parking. Billing is automatic and you can access and receive reports online or by email… and because Impark uses wireless handheld devices to monitor its locations, your parking is instantly recognized as valid. PAYBYPHONE PROGRAM AVAILABLE IN MANY IMPARK LOCATIONS

Participation is easy. There are two ways to use this new service: 1 Call Four easy steps: 1 CALL THE PHONE NUMBER POSTED ON THE LOT’S SIGNAGE Phone numbers for the PayByPhone service are displayed on parking meters and signs. 2 RESPOND TO THE PROMPTS Existing users will be prompted to enter the four- or five-digit location number and parking time required. New users will be guided through a registration process. 3 WAIT TO HEAR THAT PARKING HAS STARTED Once you’ve heard confirmation that your parking has started you may leave your vehicle. Your vehicle will now appear on the handheld units used by Impark employees. 4 EXTEND PARKING ANYTIME Extension is possible at any time. Simply call the number you dialed in Step 1. Your account will be recognized and you will be given the option to extend your parking session or to start a new one.

2 Use the mobile app Download the free app (available for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry), use the mobile website (m.paybyphone.com) or call the number on the meter from any phone. PayByPhone users receive text message reminders, which cut down on annoying parking fines, and enjoy the ability to add more time from anywhere without having to rush back to the meter. Other features include email receipts and management of your account online. For more information or to register, please visit paybyphone.com For more information, please visit www.impark.com
