Message from the Artistic Director

The central purpose of theatre and, indeed, many of our sister art forms, is the illumination of the human condition. Without such reflections of our essential nature, we can be so busy struggling through our own lives that we fail to see the primal journey we share with other human beings past and present. Hamlet even advises a theatre troupe to hold “the mirror up to nature, to show virtue her own feature, scorn her own image, and the very age and body of the time his form and pressure.” Lewis Carroll took Hamlet’s lesson one step further, and made his Through the Looking-Glass a funhouse Steven Schipper

mirror of distorted nursery rhymes and irrepressible chess pieces. Lewis Carroll wrote this fanciful sequel

to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in the nonsensical yet profound language of childhood. Yet he used the game of chess and the inverted image of life on the other side of a mirror as a lighthearted metaphorical guide to help Alice navigate her way to adulthood with confidence and independence. At the Hendry Warehouse, Simon Wiesenthal is negotiating another archetypal rite of passage: retirement from the public sphere. As Wiesenthal meets with a group of students in his office, he packs up his personal possessions and works the phone in an attempt to bring one last Nazi to justice. Like many of us, he is not ready to give up his life’s work. He feels there is so much more to be done, and he is afraid that no one will take up his cause, an admission crafted to inspire us all with its own wise magic. Perhaps theatre is both mirror and trumpet call, for we are not meant to be mere passive observers of life or art. These plays summon us to action. Can we confront our own Red Queens? Can we remember those who died unjustly, and use that memory to prevent new injustices? What we see and feel here – our laughter, our outrage – these are meant to help us find our own purpose in the looking-glass we call the world. Yours always,

Alice Through the Looking-Glass

preface BY JAMES REANEY After writing Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland for the six-year-old girl next door, Alice Liddell, the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who wrote under the name Lewis Carroll, waited five or six years before writing a sequel, Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There. Now, the fact that Alice Liddell was fast approaching 11 years of age may have influenced the shape of the new story. It starts out with Alice in a chess game playing the part of a very young pawn who in five or more moves arrives at the other end of the board as a Queen, more grown-up than at the beginning of the story, and certainly a long way from the girl who once was Alice in Wonderland. Well, if you listen carefully, you will note that in the beginning of Through the Looking-Glass, Alice is very much bossed around by the adult figures, in particular the Red Queen, who is said to be based on Miss Prickle, Alice’s governess in real life. However, increasingly as the story flows along, Alice is less subservient until, at the very end, it is she who is ordering both the Red and the White Queens around. Are we not watching the growing up of a child into an independent young lady who has learned a great deal from surviving so many encounters with strange people and situations, all of which she has addressed with a politeness and civility most of us would find very hard to manage? A great many people go through life without questioning the sanity of the way our genetics and our society and our minds arrange things – left is left and right is right; first you prick your finger with a pin, and next you scream. But suppose you lived in a looking-glass world like White Queen’s where everything was the other way around – left was right and right was left. So, perhaps, in the reflective world, you would 6

ecaferp YENAER SEMAJ YB scream first and then prick your finger; perhaps you would be first imprisoned, and then sentenced for a crime that you will not commit until tomorrow. Why? Because in Looking-Glass Land, time flows backward. Could this ever be so? Yes, it is so every time a great artist such as Lewis Carroll gets tired of our always-predictable world and decides to liven things up a bit by suggesting other possibilities. Why should we always be content with the same boring routines day after day? And perhaps too, they will be more bearable for the refreshment we have been given in the new things we find out about when we too pass through the looking-glass. Long before it was thought of, Lewis Carroll was a practitioner of Surrealism – the Salvador Dalí world of melting, bent watches and fur-lined teacups. Also, Carroll is the first in a long line of Oxford University eccentrics who have strongly urged us to abandon this boring, humdrum world for something more interesting, such as Tolkien’s Hobbit Shire or C.S. Lewis’ Narnia. One of my favourite lines in the story is Alice’s remark just after she gets through the looking-glass into the room behind it: “They certainly don’t keep this room as tidy as the other.” In view of the fully active railway train, the deer in the Forest of Namelessness, and the Egg balanced precariously on a wall as well as the 4,000 or so soldiers kept by the White King – all things a cleaning lady might object to – this has to be the understatement of the 19th century. Still, may we all, in our soul, have such an untidy room! Abridged and edited by the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre from James Reaney’s original preface as printed in Lewis Carroll’s Alice Through the Looking-Glass: Adapted for the Stage by James Reaney (published by Porcupine’s Quill).

synopsis

Set some six months after returning from her adventures in Wonderland, Alice has been dismissed to the drawing room for misbehaving, with only her pet kitten for company. To pass the time, Alice employs her imagination and begins telling the kitten about “Looking-Glass House,” a fantasy world on the other side of the mirror above the fireplace where everything is backwards. While engrossed in her tale, Alice suddenly finds herself on the mantelpiece and steps through the mirror into the Looking-Glass world. 8

On the other side, Alice meets the Red Queen in a landscape that resembles a giant chess board. She asks if she can play, and the Red Queen permits her to become one of the white pieces, explaining to her that she must reach the other side of the board if she wants to become a queen herself. This begins an interesting series of adventures as Alice moves across the board to earn a crown – meeting a host of comical characters along the way who may help or hinder her quest to win the game.

James Reaney’s stage version is derived from Lewis Carroll’s Through the LookingGlass, which served as a sequel to his famous children’s novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, both published in the late 1800s. The book has been adapted several times, in combination with Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and as its own stand-alone film or television special. When it was published, Through the Looking-Glass was received far more enthusiastically than Carroll’s first novel and has remained a classic staple of november/december 2015

Victorian children’s literature. A live-action version of the story has recently been produced by Walt Disney Pictures and filmmaker Tim Burton as a follow-up to his 2010 film Alice in Wonderland, and will be released in May of 2016.

Lewis Carroll, pseudonym of Charles Dodgson, was an English logician, mathematician, photographer and novelist best remembered for his work Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass (1871). Born in 1832, Carroll entertained himself and his family at a young age by creating games and writing stories. In school, Carroll excelled at mathematics and was awarded a scholarship to study at Christ College, where he later served as a teacher and lecturer. Carroll was an avid photographer, often choosing children as the subject of his portraits. One of his favourite models was a young girl named Alice Liddell, who later became the basis for Carroll’s fictional character Alice. At the time of his death in 1898, Alice had become the most popular children’s book in England and later would become one of the most popular in the world.

EXPLORE MORE ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS The Annotated Alice by Lewis Carroll

If you’re going to read Alice (and you should), make it an edition that explains all the inside jokes, the real people the characters were based on, and the actual places that inspired the fantastical versions. Look for the most recent edition, as it compiles the full texts of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking-Glass, Tenniel’s original illustrations, and more. Or the Very First Adventure

The British Library holds the original handwritten book Lewis Carroll created and gave to Alice Liddell, the inspiration for the character, as a Christmas present. It is the first version of the work later published as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. View the book on the British Library’s website at www.bl.uk/alice. More on the author

Many biographers have tried to tease apart the enigma that was Charles Dodgson a.k.a. Lewis Carroll, a peculiar man for his time. Most are contradictory in their interpretations of his journal entries, letters and other historical documents. Some notable works include:

The Mystery of Lewis Carroll: Discovering the Whimsical, Thoughtful and Sometimes Lonely Man Who Created Alice in Wonderland by Jenny Woolf Lewis Carroll: A Biography by Morton N. Cohen More on Wonderland

The Alice Behind Wonderland by Simon Winchester Delves into what we know of Alice Liddell, the girl who inspired the character, especially as depicted in Lewis Carroll’s own photographs. Looking-Glass Letters by Lewis Carroll, selected and introduced by Thomas Hinde Excerpts from Carroll’s letters and diaries, as well as his photographs and portraits, contextualize the period of his life from which Alice in Wonderland emerged. Alice’s Adventures: Lewis Carroll in Popular Culture by Will Brooker Alice and her story have appeared in a variety of forms in a surprising number of places, including theatre, film, tourist destinations, novels, graphic novels, computer games and toys.

In the Shadow of the Dreamchild: A New Understanding of Lewis Carroll by Karoline Leach There are 1.4 million books, magazines, movies, audiobooks, eBooks and more at the Winnipeg Public Library, and all you need to borrow them is your library card. Your Donations Make the Impossible Possible “Why sometimes, I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.” – the white queen Alice Through the Looking-Glass takes us on a wild ride through a topsyturvy world where Alice witnesses impossible situations such as the White Queen putting on a bandage before cutting her finger. Strange experiences pop up and Alice encounters several odd characters including Humpty Dumpty, talking flowers, a lion, a unicorn, not to mention Tweedledum and Tweedledee. This fantastical story is Lewis Carroll’s sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Wiesenthal

A NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT BY TOM DUGAN

Why would an Irish Catholic kid from New Jersey write a play about Simon Wiesenthal? When I was a kid, I wished my dad was a superhero racing out of the secret tunnel beneath our house every day to save the world. But alas, Frank Dugan was an ordinary man, a construction supervisor who drove into the Lincoln Tunnel every day to earn a living. My mother countered: “Your father may be an ordinary man, but he did extraordinary things!” I learned that

my dad was awarded the Bronze Battle Star and Purple Heart for his service in the Second World War. As an Irish Catholic who grew up in the depths of the Depression, my dad didn’t talk about himself much. In time, however, I was able to pester him enough to share his war experiences. Of all the stories, the one that impressed me the most was when his unit liberated the Langenstein concentration camp in Germany. Feeling the 35-year-old shrapnel under his skin, I said, “Boy, Dad, you must really hate Germans.” His answer surprised

me. “Nope, there are all types of people, good and bad. I don’t judge them by what group they belong to. I judge them by how they behave.” It was that rejection of collective guilt that first drew me to Wiesenthal’s story. Simon Wiesenthal brought 1,100 Nazi war criminals to justice. He also defended a few German and Austrian officers who refused to participate in “the final solution.” He fought for the rights of Jewish, Soviet, Polish, Gypsy, Jehovah’s Witness and homosexual Holocaust victims. However, for me, his greatest legacy is his teaching: he shared his message of tolerance with countless young visitors at his Jewish Documentation Center in Vienna. Simon Wiesenthal was truly an ordinary man who did extraordinary things.

Wiesenthal A NOTE FROM ROBERT J. KATZ

Rarely does society get to hear accounts of history that are as personal and compelling as Simon Wiesenthal’s. The theatrical presentation Wiesenthal offers a compelling new avenue to share his challenging narrative as a concentration camp survivor and Nazi hunter. Telling stories like these gives voice to those who were silenced 70-plus years ago, and encourages new generations to develop their own voices of conscience against hatred and intolerance. It has been my privilege to be one of the shepherds of these stories as Chair of the Board of Councilors of USC Shoah Foundation, which collected and is committed to preserving in perpetuity more than 51,000 video testimonies of Holocaust

The Simon Wiesenthal Center is founded.

survivors and other witnesses for use in education, both formal and informal. Simon Wiesenthal gave us his own monumental 10.5-hour testimony, chronicling his life before, during and after the Holocaust. When asked in his testimony to explain his lifelong fight for justice, he said, “If we fight together against a repeat, then we fight for the world against a shared danger.” (Please visit sfi.usc.edu/Wiesenthal to view Mr. Wiesenthal’s testimony.) That fight continues in bringing performances like Wiesenthal to the public, and in delivering testimonies like Wiesenthal’s to researchers, teachers, students and the world at large. We all need to listen and learn from these stories, as links to the past, as lessons on our shared humanity, and as sources of inspiration for positive action in our own lives and communities. Robert J. Katz is the Chair, Board of Councilors, USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education.

Wiesenthal receives the US Congressional Gold Medal from President Carter, the first of multiple decorations from other countries, including an Honorary Knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain.

Wiesenthal is named as a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Ayckbo urnfest My work is about men’s inhumanity to women, women’s inhumanity to men and

the physical world’s inhumanity to us all.

A legend of West End theatre, British playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourn has written and produced more than 70 full-length plays that have appeared on London’s most prolific stages. The 16th annual Master Playwright Festival highlights his extensive body of work that spans several decades and has earned more than 35 awards – including two Oliviers, two Molières and a Tony. Known for his farces and comedies, Ayckbourn’s work is riddled with entertaining commentary on marriage, social status and the woes of the British lower-middle class. Now aged 76, Ayckbourn is a playwriting powerhouse and shows no signs of slowing down as he continues to produce new work for the stage on practically a yearly basis. As its contribution to AyckbournFest, Royal MTC will present Things We Do for Love at the Tom Hendry Warehouse, Ayckbourn’s uproariously funny comedy about a woman who rents a room to a friend and her fiancé – unwittingly unleashing a firestorm of unexpected and violent passion.

The darker the subject, the more light you must try to shed on the mat ter. And vice versa.

Seductive and smashing, with intoxicating, fleet-footed flashes of art and big, knock-’em-dead sequences. Elton John’s songs are infused with the energy of joy. january 12 to february 6

– new york times

Billy Elliot The Musical celebrated its 10th anniversary this past summer. Since opening in London, this thrilling musical has stolen the hearts of millions of theatregoers across the world. The role of Billy Elliot has become a career-maker for triple threats across five continents. The show itself is a triple threat of sorts with a soaring score by Elton John, electric dance numbers and a powerful story set against the miners’ strike that marked a turbulent period in 1980s England. But as is often the case, the human spirit shines brightest during dark times and this is certainly true with Billy Elliot. In an interview, Elton John explained his connection to the story: “The story of young Billy, a gifted working class boy with artistic ambitions seemingly beyond his reach, had so many parallels to my own childhood. Like Billy, the opportunity to express myself artistically was a passport to a better, more fulfilling life.” He added, “The show demonstrates everything I love about the power of art. It can inspire you. It can transform lives. Art can make you look at life in a way you never have before. And it can take you places well beyond your wildest dreams.”
