MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR We choose a career. We fall in love. We buy a house. Each decision – whether considered or impetuous – makes us feel like we control our lives. But what if something the real estate agent said – “… and the house is right on the migration route for cedar waxwings!” – tunnelled into a place beyond your control, a place beyond even memory? Maybe a grandparent held a pair of binoculars to your eyes so you could see the bird’s red wingtips like sealing wax. Now, you’re not just buying a house. You are in some way resurrecting your long-dead grandparent with a stroke of your Steven Schipper

pen, because we’re all just dancing on the surface of our rich subterranean past.

Rick Miller could definitely spin the soundtrack for that dance. In BOOM X, he hotwires our memories of the 70s, 80s and 90s with a smoking medley of disco, punk, hip hop and reggae. If you can remember when you first heard Michael Jackson’s Thriller, then chances are you’ll remember the parachute pants you were wearing, the studio apartment where you lived, and the person who was calling you baby. Miller asks if we’re shaped by the times in which we live, especially the era in which we come of age. Do our hearts and minds establish patterns that will play out in variations for the rest of our lives? Some would suggest we unconsciously retrace patterns laid down by our families or our societies before we were even born. When Annie Baker sends Jenny and Elias to the ancient battlefields of Gettysburg in John, she rekindles a war between them. Theirs is a simmering conflict that had drained into some underground trench for a time, only to bubble back to the surface under the influence of this haunted arena of war, and the eerie bed and breakfast that should be their refuge. Instead these places remind them that they can’t outrun their past (or their nation’s), that they’re the inheritors of all that’s gone before. The past calls to us with long-forgotten glimpses of our youth (and our parents’ youth and their parents’ youth before them), so that all of history seems like those Russian dolls, nestled one within the other until the tiniest disappears into infinity. Yours always,

BOOM X

WRITER’S NOTES “I want to hear some small moment from your life that proves you’re really alive.” — DOUGLAS COUPLAND, GENERATION X: TALES FOR AN ACCELERATED CULTURE (1991)

We all search for meaning, in one way or another. We want our little lives to be part of a bigger picture, which is why some of us are drawn to storytelling – the great connective tissue of the human race. This is the second in a trilogy of shows designed to tell a big-picture story: 75 years of history in this corner of our planet. If BOOM was the story of my parents’ generation, BOOM X is the story of my own generation, dubbed “Generation X”. What that means, and whom it represents, is up for debate. What is not up for debate is that we’re a relatively small demographic, on the thin edge between hordes of “Baby Boomers” and “Millennials”. This precarious position, though, gives Gen Xers a unique perspective, one that can hopefully keep building bridges and breaking through walls. BOOM X, at its core, is a search for identity: of a person, a country and a generation. No matter how young you are, or where you come from, I hope you find yourself reflected in one of its many shiny surfaces. Explosively yours, Rick Miller

who is generation x? who were very influenced by musical genres such as grunge and hip hop.

Generation X is a demographic that follows the post-Second World War baby boom and precedes millennials. Generation X includes those born at the end of the baby boom (1960 to 1965) to 1980. Another term used to refer to Generation X is baby busters. Gen Xers were children when societal values began to shift and were referred to as the “latchkey generation” or “lost generation” due to decreased supervision, more opportunities for childcare outside the home, and increasing divorce rates. The term “Generation X” has been used to describe alienated youth. In the US, they were known as the “baby bust” generation because of the drop of the birth rate after the baby boom. As young adults, Gen Xers were referred to as the “MTV Generation” (referring to the television music station),

Although known as the “ignored” generation, Gen Xers had a huge influence on older and younger generations. About 55% of start-up founders are part of this generation including entrepreneur Elon Musk. During this time in Canada, many Gen Xers, especially men, experienced challenges entering the labour market in the 1980 to 90s due to economic recessions which followed the baby boom. Despite this situation, the Gen X demographic is arguably the best-educated generation with approximately 29% who have obtained a bachelor’s degree or higher. As a result, most Gen Xers have powerful positions in organizations and practice more caution compared to the baby boomers when starting to form families.

SYNOPSIS – After making an impact with the multimedia hit BOOM, Rick Miller returns with BOOM X, a nostalgic sequel that nods to the experiences of Generation X of the 1970s and 1980s. Showcasing cutting-edge projections and Rick’s virtuoso impressions of politicians, musicians and activists (including Kurt Cobain, George Bush Sr. and Gloria Steinem, to name a few), BOOM X navigates the baby boom’s tangled legacy. Chronicling key events of Gen Xers, Rick features the music and moments that have shaped this demographic.

Bruno Matte

Writer / Director / Performer

Lighting Designer / Production Manager

Rick Miller is a Dora and Gemini award-winning writer/director/actor/ musician/educator who has performed in five languages on five continents and who Entertainment Weekly called “one of the 100 most creative people alive today”. He has created and toured solo shows such as the hit sensation BOOM, MacHomer, and (w. Daniel Brooks) Bigger Than Jesus and HARDSELL. With Robert Lepage, he has collaborated on Geometry of Miracles, Zulu Time, Lipsynch, and on the film Possible Worlds. As the artistic director of WYRD Productions and co-creative director of the Kidoons Network, Rick has most recently developed BOOM and its sequel BOOM X, and (w. Craig Francis) Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea, GAME of CLONES, Jungle Book, and (w. Craig Francis and Paul Van Dyck) Frankenstein; as well as animated series that educate, enlighten, empower and entertain young people. He often teaches an interdisciplinary class at the University of Toronto called The Architecture of Creativity. Rick is from Montreal, and lives in Toronto with his partner Stephanie Baptist and their two daughters.

Bruno Matte was born and raised in Quebec City, and graduated from Cegep Limoilou in 2005 in audiovisual design. A music enthusiast, he began his professional career as a lighting designer for concerts. He began working with local artists, then moved to international acts ranging from Richard Séguin and Charlotte Cardin to Cypress Hill and Daniel Lanois. In an effort to expand his creative research, Bruno began working on several bold theatre productions. Whether with Ex Machina or Kidoons, he found ways to seamlessly integrate lighting with video, under very rigorous technical constraints. His spatial design exploration continued in the world of dance, where he has worked with several La Rotonde choreographers on productions such as Alan Lake’s Les Caveaux. Bruno now regularly designs for the circus, which seems a natural fulfillment of his experience in music, theatre and movement. In productions ranging from Flip Fabrique to Machine de Cirque, the complexity of the work allows him to keep refining his craft.

TEEN CRITIC PROGRAM

Feedback plays an important role in theatre (and in life) so, this season, we welcomed 20 grade 10 – 12 students into Royal MTC’s new Teen Critic Program. We invited the students to be among the first to see six Royal MTC productions at the Mainstage and Warehouse. The students were encouraged to reflect on how the plays moved them and to take part in pre-show discussions with professional theatre reviewers and artists, as well as post-show “gut reaction” writing sessions.

NEXT AT THE JOHN HIRSCH MAINSTAGE

APR 24 – MAY 18 WORLD PREMIERE

by JAKE MACDONALD

“My weekends at the lake are not negotiable.” – BENNET

For many Manitobans, weekends at the cottage are akin to a religious experience. That zeal can be compromised when a family cottage must be passed down to the next generation. Nostalgia, personalities, maybe even lawyers, come into play. So when Eleanor wants her children to come up with a plan for their cottage, there’s a lot at stake. Jake MacDonald is already a master at his craft, with 10 books and countless articles to his credit. But The Cottage is his first crack at playwriting, a task he’s undertaken with vigour and enthusiasm. He’s also embraced the collaborative nature of theatre, working closely with staff, director Robb Paterson and dramaturge Trish Cooper. For his part, Paterson has assembled a tremendous cast, including Jennifer Lyon, Chris Sigurdson and Tom Keenan as the squabbling siblings, and Jane Burpee as Eleanor. Join us for this world premiere – cottage season is around the corner!

JOHN Some of Baker’s honours include a New York Drama Critics Circle Award, a Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, a Lilly Award, a Time Warner Storytelling Fellowship, a MacDowell Fellowship and a Master Artist Residency at Atlantic Center for the Arts.

The art of silence

Baker is a master of dramatic silences. Though plays typically depend on dialogue to deliver a message, she believes in the power of what is left unsaid. By letting the play unfold naturally, the characters can evolve and develop gradually and organically, challenging the audience’s patience and attention spans in our social media world. Baker has noticed that these moments of silence in theatre can be uncomfortable and awkward. But when the pause is just long enough, the audience becomes more aware and adjusts to these breaks pulling them deeper into the play.

Annie Baker Annie Baker is an American playwright best known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning play, The Flick. She was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and moved between Massachusetts and New York after her parents divorced. Annie began writing plays in fifth grade when she would create stories with friends. She earned an undergrad degree in dramatic writing from NYU and an MFA from Brooklyn College in 2009. In 2013, she won international acclaim for The Flick.

Baker magnificently crafts the art of silence in her work and continues to focus more on conversation (and the breaks in conversation) and less on action. For example, in John, Baker follows the story of a New York City couple during their trip to a creepy B&B and the disputes and awkward silences that arise from their squabbles. In The Antipodes, Baker highlights storytelling as a group of screenwriters have a brainstorming session and in, The Flick, she slows the story down to create a stronger impact when dialogue is delivered.

Baker’s plays have been performed worldwide including The Flick, Circle Mirror Transformation, The Aliens, Body Awareness and an adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. 24

JOHN our family, or our own actions – though this haunting often goes unnoticed. Nonetheless, places talk to us and work on us. It is no accident that John is set in a former hospital in one of the most haunted places in America. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania is haunted by the ghosts of the tens of thousands of soldiers whose lives were taken by their fellow citizens. And by the ghosts of the ideologies that fuelled that fight and were never truly laid to rest.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES BY CHRISTOPHER BRAUER

There is always more to things and we hardly ever see it. My son and I look at pictures of icebergs and are astonished by how most of the iceberg is hidden below the surface of the ocean. Or by how the mass of our universe is far greater than the sum of all the observable matter it contains. And it’s like that in our communications with each other, too. We watch each other so closely, trying to figure out what the other is thinking and we seldom really get the answers we yearn for. We watch so closely that we can’t listen. So, we go mad – watching, interpreting – missing the “more” we know is there. The places in our lives, too, are more than they appear. They are haunted with our past – the past of our nation,

And then there are the objects that fill our lives. The “matter” we hang onto regardless of what Marie Kondo says. The items that are roadways to memories, or histories, or places, or people. The items that we apologize to when we bump them or break them…because we suspect they are as conscious of us as we are of them. Annie Baker’s funny and sad and magical John is a play that allows us to see the “more” that we so easily speed past. And it does so by not talking to us about it, but by moving slowly and quietly and allowing us the time and space to become part of the play and to see all of the ordinary things of life made strange – strange enough that we can really see them again. The quiet and stillness are uncomfortable at first. But that passes.

SYNOPSIS – Jenny and Elias are taking their crumbling relationship on a tour of Civil War sites, in the hope that a few days in a Gettysburg bed and breakfast will bring them together again. As they figure out how to coexist (and whether they should), the struggling couple learns about love, acceptance and the pressures of loneliness. With a style all her own, Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Baker shines with this insightful reflection on human relationships. John illuminates the distance between what is seen with the eyes and what is simply understood, and asks how well we can really know the people we love. 26

Whether it be for pure enjoyment or to relive memories, people start collecting for many reasons. Inspired by the creepy doll collection in the B&B, we asked the cast of John about their past and present collections. “I collect cookbooks now. I used to collect elephants (not real ones – just anything with an elephant on it).” – Terri Cherniack (Genevieve) “People’s handwriting in the form of correspondence, so letters mostly. Also, things people have made with their hands; and, of course, books.” – Maggie Nagle (Mertis) “I always wanted to have a collection. But I was (and am) too impatient. So, I would just take other people’s collections. My cousin’s baseball cards, my sister’s sticker book, a box of seashells from a yard sale, I stole the tin of bottle-caps from my second-grade classroom.... I’ve always felt bad about never really collecting anything myself... now I realize that I was just collecting collections.” – David Reale (Elias) “I’ve kept every ticket stub of every movie I’ve been to starting with Ever After in 1998.” – Rosie Simon (Jenny) 34
