MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR I find it difficult to think about infinity - that realm of the divine - when we spend every day of our lives coping with the finite. A favourite pen runs dry, a neighbourhood tree is cut down, and another show closes. We are tempted to wonder whether anything lasts. Or are our lives made up merely of farewells large and small, our nobility measured by the grace we bring to leave-taking? If you ask playwrights Annabel Fitzsimmons, Alison Lawrence and Mary Francis Moore, they’ll sit you down with a tequila shooter and tell you about their good-bye men, the ones who got away and Steven Schipper

slammed the door on infinity as they left. Grace isn’t a bittergirl’s first response, because grace isn’t

as funny as anger, grief, and revenge, but these wronged women earn their girl-power anthems in the end. Brad Fraser’s Kill Me Now may not be as easy to dance to, but it shares the sardonic humour and no-holds-barred honesty of the Mainstage musical. Of course, a bittergirl’s metaphorical heart can heal, while Fraser’s characters face the limitations of the physical body, and the ticking clock that is human frailty. Yet there is grace in Fraser’s characters, too, and a heroism that defies social norms. All four of these playwrights know that courage is our only defence against the ravages of time. Their characters dance, they laugh, they risk everything for love. And perhaps their headlong plunge into life (and death) is the best antidote to our own fear of loss and change. Yours always,

BREAKUP

SURVIVAL GUIDE Got dumped? Don’t fret. These fun and liberating tips will help you pull yourself together and move on. LET IT OUT

Your friends can only listen to your stories for so long. Buy yourself a journal and use it as a dumping ground for your emotions. Writing can also be a therapeutic way of reflecting. Delete

The temptation of scrolling through their social media feeds may arise. To avoid this, unfollow and unfriend to prevent getting sucked into the past. Clean up

The last thing you’ll want to see is your ex’s face, so throw away all pictures and mementos to help start fresh. Go outside

Locking yourself inside will do more harm than good. Instead, go for a walk or plan a picnic to help de-stress and recharge. Indulge

There’s nothing wrong with a little indulgence once in a while. Treat yourself to a spa day, dine at your favourite restaurant (and order the chocolate cake) or get some retail therapy. Get together with friends and family

Surrounding yourself with positive and supportive people will help you cheer up. Take a class

You know that salsa class you’ve always wanted to take? Now is the time. Sign up for a dance class, take a pottery lesson or learn how to cook. Engaging in something new will help you reconnect with yourself. Exercise

If you’re stuck in a rut, working out will not only boost your energy, but also improve your mood! Plan a trip

Whether it’s a tropical getaway or a short road trip, planning an excursion will help you detach from negative energy and focus on the present moment. Take your time

No need to rush into things. Take time to reflect, reconnect and recharge. 8

BITTERGIRL: THE MUSICAL

Annabel (Griffiths) Fitzsimmons, Mary Francis Moore and Alison Lawrence. PHOTO COURTESY OF THEBITTERGIRLS.COM

WHAT IS

BITTERGIRL? Summer 1998. Annabel Fitzsimmons (nee Griffiths) and Mary Francis Moore were actors and friends, who had written a play together for the SummerWorks Festival in Toronto. Mary Francis was on a radio show being interviewed with another actor/writer, Alison Lawrence. When they went to commercial break, Mary Francis turned to her and said, “You have to meet my writing partner, Annabel.” So that fall the three women—one divorced, one just dumped by her long-time live-in, and one facing yet another failed short-term romance—started getting together once a week to write. But no matter what work they brought in, the writing and the talk inevitably turned to relationships and bad 10

breakup stories. Quicker than you can say, “It’s not you, it’s me,” the bittergirls were born. bittergirl (the play) first took to the stage at Buddies in Bad Time’s Rhubarb Festival with the three bittergirls in black evening gowns (because if they were going to write about heartbreak, they were going to look damn good while performing it!) After selling out the festival, the bittergirls spent the next few years performing from the Tristan Bates Theatre in London, England to two sold-out runs at the Tim Sims Playhouse in Toronto and to festivals and summer theatres across Ontario. And every time they performed, audience members, male and female, gay and straight, young and old, grabbed them after the show and said, “Let me tell you my story…”

BITTERGIRL: THE MUSICAL After a break to pursue their own individual careers and projects, the bittergirls were invited to showcase the play off-Broadway. After their last performance, while Nicky Hilton danced on the table next to them at Joe’s Pub, the girls realized they loved the show too much to put it to bed yet, so they came back to Toronto and mounted a record-breaking run at the Pilot Tavern in Toronto. Audiences were lining the stairs at the Pilot waiting for their tickets, so Annabel, Alison and Mary Francis wrote poster-sized imaginary book pages and plastered the walls with them to give customers something to read. A literary agent took the hint and on Valentine’s Day 2003 the girls sat down and signed a book contract with Penguin Canada for Bittergirl: Getting Over Getting Dumped. Plume published the book in the U.S., and the bittergirls were flown to New York to appear on the Today Show (along with Martha Stewart and JLo!) In Canada, CBC’s Shelagh Rogers told them about pouring red wine over her date’s head when he dumped her over dinner. They were featured in magazines like Elle Canada, Glamour, Bust and Complete Woman. They gave relationship advice all over the continent - on the radio, on TV, in the grocery line and at their OB/GYN. But the girls still had more in mind for bittergirl. After a farewell tour that ended up in one last rock star moment selling out the 800-seat Rose Theatre in Brampton, the girls decided to turn bittergirl, the

play, into a musical.

LET ME TELL YOU MY STORY

So they did, and in the summer of 2015, the bittergirls set off for PEI for rehearsals of Bittergirl – the ... Musical. The show was a sell-out smash hit. One of the artistic directors who came to see it was Steven Schipper from the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre who wanted to bring it to the John Hirsch Mainstage with a brand new production helmed by the wonderful Krista Jackson. So here we are! We embarked on this journey way back in 1998, meeting just to see where this piece of writing would go. Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined where we would end up. We have seen each other through heartbreak, marriage, love, children, career shifts, a whole lot of dressing rooms and who knows how many airports. For a period of time we all lived on the same street, breaking into each other’s houses for a forgotten ingredient for dinner or a bottle of wine. We finish each other’s sentences and are the first people each of us turns to in times of crisis. The bittergirl adventure continues here in Winnipeg and the three of us couldn’t be happier. Annabel (Griffiths) Fitzsimmons, Alison Lawrence and Mary Francis Moore

EDUCATION AND OUTREACH

ENRICHING STUDENTS’ LIVES THROUGH

THE POWER OF LIVE THEATRE

A trip to the theatre does more than encourage an appreciation of the arts; it feeds our minds and our hearts. When young people experience theatre, their emotions are stirred so they learn to empathize with others. They become attuned to the subtleties of spoken language, so they can choose their words with care. They learn about history and geography from plays set in other places and eras, so they become part of a community that transcends space, time, and culture. In effect, a student visiting the theatre steps through a doorway to civilization, in all its wonder and diversity. So far this season -

• We sold out three student matinee performances. • Overall, nearly 6,000 students have attended a play with their school this season, a 20% increase over last year! Take a look around and you may just see young faces in the audience. Thank you to the educators from all the schools involved, and to Great-West Life for helping us share the amazing experience of live theatre! Want to Bring Your Class to the Theatre?

KILL ME NOW

PLAYWRIGHT’s NOTES BY BRAD FRASER

From the beginning of my career as a playwright I have done my best to put on the stage those people I didn’t see represented, starting with myself. As a director I have always tried to cast people who vary greatly in size, shape, colour and age, because I believe the eye is more excited by variety than PHOTO BY DAVID HAWE uniformity. Being queer and growing up in poverty led me to see the world from a much different perspective than many, and my desire to see that world reflected in the theatre led to the democracy of my characters — a repertoire that grows with each play I write, each attempt to stretch my imagination, to understand and portray things that are outside of my immediate realm of everyday experience. This is my obligation as an artist, to explore that which is not me. To find the concerns we all share in the traits that make us different. There’s a great deal of talk today about who has the “right” to tell a particular story, or depict a particular character, or explore a particular situation. These rather arbitrary and selectively applied condemnations, tellingly, are almost always based on race, and almost never on class. This allows those who can afford to attend

university to let themselves off of the ethical hook when they argue so passionately, as they often do, on behalf of another group who has not necessarily requested their aid. My response to these people can be summed up in one question — Who has the right to ask anyone else to limit their imagination? Is this not the greatest form of censorship possible, to dictate to people what they are allowed to empathise with and what they are not, to tell them to limit their dreams, to squelch the very beginning of the process of understanding? Art that fails and offends is as important as art that succeeds and gains wide acceptance. How can we measure one without the other? The great thing about art is people are rarely required to experience it if they don’t want to. Voice your disapproval by your absence, rather than calling for anything to be censored. We live in a democracy. Everyone has the right to free speech, even if it hurts your feelings or makes you angry. This is not a play about disability. It is a play about courage and love, as all my plays are.

Synopsis - Kill Me Now

Widower Jake has been unwavering in his commitment to taking care of his disabled son Joey. As Joey enters adolescence, Jake finds himself in a morally ambiguous position when it comes to charting his son’s passage from a puberty-ravaged teenager to a self-assured young man. 30

KILL ME NOW

DIRECTOR’s NOTES BY SARAH GARTON STANLEY

I took a flight across the country to see the first production of this play. It was directed by playwright Brad Fraser. I remember sitting in the theatre, after the lights had gone to black, after the actors had taken their bows, after people had begun filing out of the theatre, and sitting with my feelings and a profound sense of the beauty and the tragedy of our human existence. I was so moved by the story and so challenged by being so moved. We all die. We all know this and — of course — we also don’t. This is part of what allows us to keep going. In this ground-breaking script, Fraser asks us to engage deeply with our mortality and our agency. Fraser, through the dilemmas of his characters, demands that we sit with the hard stuff, and that we feel gently, compassionately for one another. A few years back I learned that for those among us who do not identify as having the lived experience of disability we have a name we share. We are TABS. United by the fact that - for now - we are Temporarily Able Bodied. And for those of us who are TABS, we know, that through the course of life’s progress we will meet with a moment where our status will change. This is part of life’s progress. Due to circumstances beyond any of the characters’ control (which if we are honest covers most of our circumstances) father and son, sister and friends are all forced to confront their own agonies around one of life’s central questions: when and how will we die? This question is before our courts, both legislative and ethical. As recently march/april 2017

as last summer, Bill C41 was amended (and passed) to legally allow for people whose death is “reasonably foreseeable”, the option for a medically assisted death. Ethically, this question still rages both nationally and internationally. And the question is most deeply examined in the context of disability. The concern — very simplistically put — is that a TAB might decide the fate of another without ever fully comprehending the agency, power and capacity of this beautiful human person. Ultimately, Kill Me Now is about love and more potently it is about all the questions love demands of each of us. We must love hard. It is the only way. And we need to laugh too, wherever and whenever we can. I love this play, its honesty, its courage and its unflinching look at the questions that can never be answered with a certainty of being right but can always be met with love.

KILL ME NOW The two main laws that protect Manitobans with disabilities from being discriminated against are the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and The Manitoba Human Rights Code.

the LEGAL and

HUMAN RIGHTS of MANITOBANS with DISABILITIES ADAPTED WITH PERMISSION FROM BARRIER FREE MANITOBA Human rights laws require governments, businesses and organizations in Manitoba to accommodate the needs of every person with a disability in a way that respects their dignity, self-respect and self-worth. These laws affirm the principle that society should be structured and designed for inclusiveness. Positive steps are needed to ensure people with a disability can access and enjoy the same benefits of all buildings, facilities, services, programs and employment as everyone else. 32

The Charter applies to the government and says that every person with a disability is equal before the law and has the right to equal protection under the law and cannot be discriminated against. So the government cannot create barriers that exclude persons with disabilities from getting the same benefits as others and that laws, policies and programs must accommodate the needs of people with a disability. Lawsuits under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms are frequently very expensive and may not be resolved for years. It can also be very difficult to enforce your rights under the Charter if you cannot afford a lawyer. The Manitoba Human Rights Code says that no person, business or organization can discriminate against people with a disability. Customers, clients and tenants with disabilities have the right to equal treatment and equal access to facilities and services. Public and private educational providers also must ensure their services are accessible and appropriate accommodation is available. Employers must accommodate the needs of people with disabilities. In the workplace, employees with disabilities are entitled to the same opportunities and benefits as people without disabilities.

Ovation

march/april 2017

KILL ME NOW In some circumstances, employees with disabilities may require special arrangements or “accommodations” to enable them to fulfill their job duties. The duty to accommodate extends up to the point of “undue hardship”, because of costs or due to a very limited set of other factors. In every case, the employer, landlord or service provider must show that they have made reasonable efforts to accommodate the special needs of people with a disability. Last year, over 45% of all the formal complaints made to the Manitoba Human Rights Commission related to disability discrimination, making it the primary reason for complaint. No other ground for complaint came close. And this has been true for a long time - in the 15 previous years, over 41% of all formal complaints related to disability discrimination.

Great entertainment lives here.

In almost all of these cases, settlements or decisions have required that changes and accommodations be made only for the person who complained. The policies and practices that discriminated against many other Manitobans with disabilities in similar circumstances were left unchanged. These human rights laws have made many positive changes for Manitobans with a disability. However, despite these laws, the exclusion of people with a disability, and the barriers that prevent their equitable access and participation remain widespread in Manitoba.

Living on your own, you must have to deal with different agencies to make sure all your needs are met. Do you find that managing a disability is a bit of a bureaucratic nightmare?

Q&A WITH

Yes! And working on this show, it’s great, but there are a bunch of other logistical challenges involved. There are issues with getting my personal care looked after, and the fact that my schedule has to change which is going to impact the schedules of a bunch of other people. And then there are challenges with going out of town, since the show will be on tour at NAC in Ottawa. There are challenges with social assistance that I need to deal with, making sure that I have income when I finish the engagement. There’s red tape everywhere. Right now I’m getting a mountain of red tape. I don’t think that’s going to end anytime soon.

MYLES A. TAYLOr MYLES IS AN ACTOR WITH A DISABILITY WHO PLAYS JOEY IN KILL ME NOW. What do you think will be the biggest challenge of playing Joey?

Well it’s my first big role so that entire notion is scaring the bejeezus out of me. It’s one of those challenges that scares me in all the right ways. I’ve been reading the script and I’m really excited for the character; Joey is someone I can relate to, I was him at 17, socially and emotionally I was pretty much Joey. I was ready to move out, thought I knew what was going on. Boy was I wrong! When did you move out on your own?

I was 24 when I moved out of the house. I felt like it was now, or I was never going to make it. And in all honesty, typical 24-year-old stuff aside, it was getting more and more difficult for my folks to look after me on a daily basis. So I just made it easier on them. 34

When I travel to Ottawa I’ll need a personal care attendant to help facilitate things like getting ready in the morning and that sort of thing. I need an attendant and some machinery to get in and out of bed. But I’m fortunate in that, once I’m in my wheelchair, for the most part, I’m pretty much self-reliant and self-sufficient. So that’s another thing I have to look into taking care of: all the transfer machinery I’m going to need out there as well. Since the show will be on tour at NAC — have you spent time in Ottawa before?

No. I’ve never been. That’s another thing I’m looking forward to: being a tourist. It’s been on my list of places to go for a while. What are your thoughts right now about the rehearsal process?

I think it’s all going to be terrifying and

Ovation

march/april 2017

KILL ME NOW exciting at the same time. I’m looking forward to it. Through theatre and film school I’ve been in plenty of rehearsals. I’m used to the grind of running lines over and over again and rehearsing blocking over and over again. That’s certainly something that I’m comfortable with, but maybe not to the scale or rigour of a professional show. So it will be interesting to see how my body holds up in terms of energy levels. But I’m looking forward to it, I think it’s going to be fun.

REGIONAL TOUR

JANUARY 30 – MARCH 4, 2017

Travelling over 8,000 kilometers, the Royal MTC Regional Tour of Last Train to Nibroc enchanted communities throughout Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. Penned by Arlene Hutton, Last Train to Nibroc is a charming love story set in 1940’s small town America. As Mae and Raleigh, Gwendolyn Collins and Kristian Jordan brought to life the innocence, humour and struggles of youth to over 4,000 patrons. “Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries takes great pride in its partnership with the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre to bring live professional theatre to communities across the province,” said President & CEO, Peter Hak. “This year’s production of Last Train to Nibroc was another tremendous demonstration of talent and dedication by the cast and crew. Congrats to everyone on the 24-show run.” Behind the scenes are several Regional Tour veterans: Kathryn Ball, Company Stage Manager; Ian Kirk, Tour Technical Director; and Chris Hadley, Tour Technician along with Jane Buttner, Apprentice Stage Manager.

This tour would not be possible without the generosity of our sponsors: Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, CIBC, MacDon, Manitoba Public Insurance, Calm Air, Winnipeg Airports Authority and Gardewine. We would also like to thank the Manitoba Arts Council for its continued support and all our hard working and dedicated presenters and volunteers. 52
