Message from MTC’s

Artistic Director Steven Schipper

In 1968, feminist and undercover Playboy Bunny Gloria Steinem asked her puzzle-loving friend Stephen Sondheim to concoct some cryptic crosswords for a new magazine called New York. Over the next two years, the playwright created 41 of the most diabolically difficult puzzles of their kind, stopping only because he had to finish writing Company, a play that ultimately won Tony Awards for best musical and best score.

Doesn’t this story say a lot about Sondheim’s plays? They’re as sexy as Steinem, as defiantly brilliant as his puzzles, and as imbued with urban chic as the city that inspired Sondheim’s life and work. At the very heart of both the puzzles and his plays is virtuosic wordplay. Sondheim is as unsentimental as Brecht, as cerebral as Beckett, as blackly funny as Mamet, and as keen a social observer as Shaw, but he writes in rhyme. Long before hip hop made it cool again, Sondheim was creating rhymes that delight and surprise and, in retrospect, feel inevitable, as if there were really no other civilized way to express that idea or emotion. His lyrics are clever while seeming effortless,

revealing while hiding masses of subtext, and since A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in 1962, they’ve been paired almost exclusively with Sondheim’s own incomparable music. Today, you can’t buy a copy of the rare spiral-bound collection of Sondheim’s cryptic crosswords, but you can come to SondheimFest and experience his plays. They will charm and challenge you, and, as Sondheim said of his puzzles, offer you the deeply satisfying pleasure of following and matching his devious mind. Yours always,

About Stephen Sondheim Stephen Sondheim has been called the greatest artist in musical theatre, and the founding father of the modern musical who revolutionized the medium. Over the course of his career, he’s won an Academy Award, eight Tony Awards, multiple Grammy Awards, Laurence Olivier Awards, Drama Desk Awards and a Pulitzer Prize for Sunday in the Park with George. He’s written music and lyrics for more than 19 major works, has composed film scores and has been the subject of multiple anthologies and revues. Born in 1930 in New York, Sondheim grew up with his mother in rural Pennsylvania after his parents divorced when he was 10. An only child, Sondheim became friends with the son of playwright, lyricist and producer Oscar Hammerstein, who happened to be his neighbour. When Sondheim was a teenager, Hammerstein became a mentor, fostering a love of musical theatre in his student and teaching him “more about songwriting and the musical theatre than most people learn in a lifetime.” While Sondheim pursued formal education in music at Williams College, Hammerstein continued to tutor him, having him write scripts and scores for four musicals. After college, Sondheim moved to New York to study composition with Milton Babbit. Sondheim was only 25 when he landed his first professional writing job as lyricist for West Side Story. He followed that assignment with another Arthur Laurents/ Jerome Robbins collaboration when he wrote the lyrics for Gypsy in 1959. These two musicals were called “daring and unorthodox” at the time, and they marked a departure from Broadway musicals written before the Second World War. Former New York Times critic Frank Rich said Sondheim “was a rebel advancing a cause: a new, jarring, adult kind of Broadway musical.” Others agree that every new musical since has been influenced in one way or another by the “new rules” Sondheim established.

While he started his career as a lyricist, Sondheim prefers to write both music and lyrics for a piece, which he first achieved in 1962 with A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. In 1972, he collaborated for the first time with Harold Prince. They created Company, Follies, A Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd. After more than a decade, the two friends amicably sought new partnerships. Sondheim went to work with playwright and director James Lapine. Together, they won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Sunday in the Park with George, one of only nine musicals to receive the honour. Three years later, the pair achieved success again with Into the Woods. In the ‘90s, Sondheim wrote music and lyrics for Assassins and Passion, and won a Best Song Oscar for Dick Tracy’s “Sooner or Later.” In 2008, he received a special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement. Two years later, in honour of his 80th birthday, the Henry Miller Theatre in New York was renamed the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. Turning 83 in March, Sondheim shows no intention of retiring. Early in 2012, he announced plans for a new musical with playwright David Ives. He remains Executive Vice President of the organization Young Playwrights, which he founded in 1981 to inspire youth to write for the theatre. His work continues to inspire as his musicals are remounted regularly on Broadway and around the world.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum Kiss the Giraffe Productions Forrest Nickerson Theatre 285 Pembina Highway www.ktg.ca Kiss the Giraffe Productions, a team with a long history of comedic musicals, is thrilled to present a Sondheim classic! Broadway’s greatest farce is fast-paced, irreverent and one of the funniest musicals ever written. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from the 2,000-year-old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. In this non-stop laughfest, a slave struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan for his young master in exchange for freedom. The plot twists and turns with slamming doors, cases of mistaken identity and a showgirl or two. Stephen Sondheim’s Excellent Adventure Naughty Sailboat/The 28th Minute Shadling Productions/Snakeskin Jacket Studio 320 (Theatre Incarnate) 320–70 Albert Street www.naughtysailboat.com | www.snakeskinjacket.ca | www.shadling.com

Legend has it that before he was this year’s master playwright, a young Stephen Sondheim was mentored by musical theatre Jedi Oscar Hammerstein. Oscar gave the young Steve a series of four exercises which, if completed successfully, would make him a master of his craft. Now, four stalwart and noble Manitoba theatre companies are banding together to take on Hammerstein’s schoolings in the hopes of collectively achieving a passing grade. From the companies that brought you Orphans (HHHHH CBC), Almost an Evening (HHHH WFP), Trashbot Apocalypse (HHHH CBC) and Mary Rose (HHHH WFP). Don’t miss this evening of short plays and excellent adventure.

Sunday in the Park with George Gallery Works Urban Shaman Gallery 203–290 McDermot Avenue www.galleryworkstheatre.blogspot.ca

Gallery Works presents Act One of Sunday in the Park with George – just as Sondheim first presented it. This soaring musical is, at first glance, about a painter and a painting – A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte – but it’s really about how we all so desperately want to make our mark on the world but rarely know how to live in it. The dynamic setting of The Urban Shaman Gallery will transform into a life-size masterpiece, bringing audience members closer than ever to this remarkable painting. Reserve your tickets – seating is limited! Detail of Un dimanche après-midi à l’Île de la Grande Jatte (A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte) by Georges Seurat, 1884
