Meet the Author

Neiley McAdams has a long history of domestic traveling. Her parents made sure every summer they would enjoy one or two trips before going back to school in the fall. As a child she always enjoyed traveling with family every summer. It was exciting to visit other cities within the United States, even if only for 3 or 4 days. While in college the desire to become a Pharmacist overshadowed traveling. Years later that desire to travel returned. For quite some time she would dream of taking nice vacations, but never actually went. Then one day she finally took action! Neiley grew up in a small town called Due West, South Carolina. There wasn’t much to do in this small town, but that didn’t stop her from wanting more. After high school, she attended the University of South Carolina, located in Columbia South Carolina and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences. Three years later, she graduated twice, receiving her Doctorate of Pharmacy Degree along with a Master’s in Business Administration. Neiley has been a Pharmacist for 10 years. Once her career began, she started taking vacations again, but always had a desire to travel more and to newer locations. One day she discovered travel hacking. It was a completely new world! She said to herself, “what’s the excuse not to travel now?” She has used credit card rewards to book flights and hotels for the last few years and is

Chapter 1:

Travel Hacking

What are travel hacks? Travel hacks are ways to use credit cards and other resources to pay for those once unimaginable vacations. You may have credit cards in your wallet at this very second that could fund your next vacation but don’t have a full understanding of the benefits or how this is possible. What is being discussed here are those points and miles that are associated with credit cards. If you don’t use those points and miles, you are just throwing away money! The rewards attached to credit cards are very important because they will help you save lots of money when booking those flights and hotel rooms. Before you book your next adventure make sure to read through this e-book in its entirety to save money! Every person would or should at least, like to take a breather from reality and just enjoy a wonderful vacation for a couple of days. Most people feel like the expenses that come along with vacationing only leads to more financial worry. Everyone has researched beautiful hotels to only settle for the less desirable location due to associated costs. Maybe the costs wouldn’t put such a strain on your finances, but you just cannot see yourself spending thousands of dollars on one vacation. With travel hacking you can plan in advance, stay at your dream hotel, and book your flights with little to no money. Before we begin, let’s give a real example of how points have been used. We are talking about planning a trip to Key West, Florida. The room rates were ridiculous, and the flights were not the cheapest either. The total of approximately $2,300.00 for 3 nights was shocking! Instead of purchasing the tickets and hotel room with a debit or cash back credit card, the point system was leveraged. Travel hacking made it easy to bypass the $2,300 ticket price and only pay a total of $260.00. Yes, you read correctly $260.00 was the amount for hotel for 3 nights and 2 airline tickets! This was incredible! Not only an amazing trip to Key West, FL was booked, with hardly any out-of-pocket expenses, but other flights have been booked with zero cost except for taxes and fees by using the point system.

Chapter 1:

Travel Hacking

In addition to finances, it is important to have good credit scores before applying for those bonus rewards credit cards. Since we are talking about credit let’s take it a step further.

Chapter 2:

What is my credit score?

Credit scores are used by lenders to determine credit risk and gives insight on your ability to pay for purchases. These scores are provided by Experian, Transunion, and Equifax. You credit scores range between 300-850 and is determined by several factors. Fair credit score ranges between 620-679, good ranges between 680-739, and excellent range is 740-850. These factors include your payment history (35%), credit utilization (30%), length of credit history (15%), new credit inquiry (10%), and credit mix (10%). As you can tell from the above percentages, payment history and credit utilization are very important in relation to your credit scores. Late payments can really cause serious harm to your credit. These late payments are reported to the three credit bureaus causing temporary blemishes on the credit report. The amount of debt you have as it relates to credit limits or credit utilization is very important. It is not wise to use most of your available credit (greater than 30% of overall credit) without making substantial payments. This shows you may not have the funds to pay off your debts in a timely manner. Length of credit history determines when you opened your first credit card account. The longer the length of credit history the better. New credit inquiries are considered soft or hard inquiries. For our purposes, we are here to discuss hard inquiries. It may sound scary, but these inquiries are necessary to notify the credit bureaus of your desire for a new card and to check and see if you are in good financial standing. The great thing about hard inquiries is it temporarily impacts your credit score. Lastly is credit mix. This would include home loan, car loan, credit cards, etc. If all 5 of these categories are managed well, you can have an excellent credit score. If you have a good credit score of at least a 710 or 720, credit card companies are willing to approve your credit card requests. Financial institutions are excited about giving you revolving credit to help with their profitability. These companies see credit cards as ways to earn interest off your minimum payments.

Chapter 3: Personal and Business Credit Cards

You have personal and business credit cards that can provide you with the desired rewards necessary for travel hacking. There is no order required when applying for business cards. However, discretion must be exercised when applying for personal credit cards. There are certain personal cards you should initially apply for to make sure you do not miss out on great points and mile rewards. This decision could affect your card approval for about 2 years, so act cautiously. One of our favorite credit cards is Chase Sapphire Preferred rewards credit cards because of its versatility with transferring points. Credit card issuers are constantly updating points and policies associated with their available rewards and perks. Some of the major credit card companies we will discuss in our course are Hilton, Marriott, American Airlines, Delta, and much more. The companies listed have amazing reward advantages. The number of bonus points offered constantly changes with each new offer. If you are in the market for looking for additional cards it is important to get the maximum number of points or miles known for each card. This requires some research or our course to determine when the perfect opportunity presents itself to apply for these cards. It has been discovered that depending on the company, you may not have the opportunity to own each issuer’s card made available. Each lender has their own sets of rules and regulations as it relates to the distribution of the cards. So again, before you make a final decision on a card, check to see if there are any restrictions on the number of cards you can have on an individual account. Research is required during this step to make certain you have received the best cards with top sign-up bonus offers for your future goals.

Chapter 4: Checking account bonus points offers

In this section we are going to talk about opening a new checking account for bonus points or miles. Initially this may seem like a great idea. However, when we take a deeper look into the offer it is less than tempting. For most people, this offer would be intriguing right? Think about it, you don’t have to worry about any hard inquiries! This may be true, but the rewards won’t carry you far, and a ton of money is needed to receive their rewards. Look below for an example of miles associated with a checking account. Checking account offer example: Accounts Silver Gold Planum Titanium

Amount required ($) $1,500.00 $10,000.00 $50,000.00 $200,000.00

Miles offered 5,000 30,000 50,000 60,000

Monthly required spend $125 $500 $750 $1000

*Monthly service fee of $25 if account falls below minimum required balance. *Unable to transfer funds from current account with this bank to this new account.

The above example may seem enticing initially, but let’s take a moment to review the information provided. If you are even considering this offer stop and look at the information provided below the chart. You are unable to transfer any funds within this bank to open a new account. Secondly if for some reason fall you below the monthly requirement you are charged a substantial monthly fee. What also catches our attention is the monthly required spending. These companies can actually require you to spend a minimum amount every month to remain within guidelines! It is quite evident that their only goal is to make profit from your revolving funds. There are too many restrictions for such a small number of miles rewarded. If you are someone who has the extra cash to open a completely new account and desire to do so, that’s great!

Chapter 4: Checking account bonus points offers

But if you are looking to gain as many benefits for your funds as possible look at the amounts required versus the miles offered. The silver account requiring a $1,500.00 minimum won’t get you enough miles for a one-way flight to any location. You can actually take the cash amount of $1,500.00 and book a round trip flight to Hawaii yourself! The $10,000.00 invested for 30,000 miles will get you a round trip from Charlotte NC to Fort Lauderdale, FL. You couldn’t even fly to Miami, FL with only 30,000 miles! If you decided to open an airline credit card your spending requirement in 3 months would range between $1,000.00 and $5,000.00. Since we learned previously to make payments in full, we won’t have to pay interest charges! A great credit card offer would give you 60,000 miles for a minimum spend of $3,000.00 in 3 months. After you have met the minimum spending amount those 60,000 miles are now yours. This is such a better offer than the checking account example given above. With our checking account offer example you would have to transfer $200,000.00 or more for those same 60,000 miles! This seems a bit excessive! If you are still curious about opening the checking account for the miles or point rewards, make sure to call the bank offering the rewards. You want to determine the length of time your funds must remain in this account. Is it 3 months, 6 months, or 12 months? It is most certain that you are not able to close this account within a month of receiving those rewards without some sort of penalty. In fact, your FICO score will return to its original score after applying for a credit card before you can transfer funds out of this new checking account. The two examples provided are both options for you to use at your discretion. The second example with credit usage allows for you to be free of commitment after you have met the minimum requirements. While the banks may vary in their determination of length of time for the checking account offer. Take a moment and think through all scenarios before deciding.

Chapter 5:

Annual Fees

During your card selection process also consider annual fees. Of course, those cards with the most points or miles and other benefits will have higher annual fees. However, you don’t have to break the bank with these associated costs to receive great perks from cards. It can cost between $0 to $695 annually to keep each credit card active. In some instances, the annual statement credits you may receive throughout the year can simply add up to your card’s annual fee! It is important to consider the benefits and annual fees for each card before selecting. Many cards come with additional benefits such as, lounge access, airline priority passes, early or late check in and much more. Do not be so quick to cancel your cards after using your rewards! There is another way for you to avoid these annual fees without disrupting your credit score or negatively impacting your relationships with the credit card companies.

Chapter 6:

Card Selections

Once you have made your decision to apply for a credit card for rewards there are a few things you want to think about. Do you have an idea of where your next adventure will take place? What months are you interested in traveling to your destination? For how long? Are you traveling solo, with a partner, or in a group? These are the first few questions you normally think about anyway. The only component added is how many miles or points are needed to get you to this wonderful destination with the least amount of out-of-pocket expenses. If possible, you don’t want to wait last minute to apply for these cards. Consider applying for a card with great offers as soon as possible. It makes things easier when you have points on standby for an impromptu vacay! If you don’t have any points on hand that’s okay too! We are just going to begin planning now. There are some amazing cards that allow for you to transfer points between hotels and airlines. During the transferring process you will find some hotels or airline transfer at a higher ratio. For example, the transfer ratio may increase to 1.5 instead of 1. Allowing for you to save some points! These cards that allow for this flexibility are absolutely the best! After you have made your card selections, met the minimum spending requirements, and paid your balance in full, the bonus points will be deposited into your account. Now it is time to move forward with plans on using those points toward your next vacation. Exciting news! You did it! You have taken the initial steps necessary to ensure you did not break the bank with funding your next vacation and allowed for credit to do the work for you. Once you make the purchase with your points and miles you will feel so relieved and extremely excited about your trip!

Points earned after bonus

Once you make the purchase with your points and miles you will feel so relieved and extremely excited about your trip! Good news! If you don’t have quite enough points to fund your vacation with bonus points, you can still earn points and miles with each purchase made. Each card allows for you to earn points each time the credit cards are used.

Chapter 7:

Points earned after bonus

The number of points vary based on usage at restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, etc. In addition, each credit card company decides how many points they will allow per transaction. Here’s a key, you want to know which of your cards allows the most rewards for each swipe. This will allow for you to earn more points! Once you have used the sign on bonus points issued after meeting the minimum spending requirement, it will of course take longer to earn more rewards. Do not be discouraged by this process as the number of points will still add up! Allowing enough time for you to build up enough points toward your next vacation! Remain consistent paying with reward credit cards instead of with cash, check, or debit cards. In no time you will see the points adding up, so keep your eye out for your next destination to explore! Bonus: Companies allow for you to purchase points if needed for your future trip. Something you can do is purchase points if there is a promotion. The better promotions will give you a 50% bonus on the points purchased. This will help make up the difference in points needed for next trip a little faster.

Chapter 7:

Points earned after bonus

Ways to earn points: There is not a one size fit all method to earning points for traveling. If you can plan ahead, several avenues can be taken to make sure you have all the points needed prior to your vacation. Find a few of the methods below: Traditional Travel- pay out of pocket for all expenses Credit card bonuses- receive significant number of points once minimum spending requirement has been met Bonus point promotions- randomly offered by card issuer Credit card usage- the more you use, the more you earn Credit card referral- a unique link provided to share with family and friends Shopping portals- greatly increases number of points by shopping on credit card company websites Reward point websites- can earn points, miles, or cash rewards on these sites Many more methods!

Chapter 8:

Expiration Dates

Making sure the points you have worked so diligently to obtain do not expire is very important. First you would need to research your specific credit cards to see how long points remain active. Secondly keep your cards active by using it at least once within either 12, 24 months or whichever timeframe is given before rewards expire. This is determined by each company since they all have various rules. If you have multiple cards just place them in a rotation for use. Constantly making purchases, no matter the cost, will keep your points active and ready for use in the future!

Chapter 9:

Expectations for gaining points:

It would be awesome to gain 200,000 points in one month, but for most people this won’t be the case. It may take 2 months to 2 years to accumulate enough points for your desired trip. For example, if you want a quick 3 or 4 night vacation at category 3 or potentially 4 hotels, then it may take between 3-6 months to completely pay for your trip with points. Paying for a quick trip to Los Angeles, Ca for 3 nights in a category 4 hotel may take about 6 months. If you consistently use your card when received for 6 months, you should be able to pay for hotel and flight. Now if you are planning on staying at the Ritz-Carlton in Los Angeles, then it will take about a year to accumulate enough points. Keep in mind you must consider the months you are booking your vacation. Obviously peak season will cost more money and require more points. Peak seasons are during different times of the year for various locations. Further explained, peak season is the popular time when there is an influx of tourists to a location. You may have an opportunity to stay at your desired location during the off season. Be patient and prepare in advance as much as possible.
