A fény jelentősége Borza Teréz művészetében

Borza Teréz jellegzetes áttetsző és leheletfinom porcelánplasztikái mellett páratlanul sokszínű életművének részét képezik rusztikus faktúrájú merített papír munkái és az utóbbi évtizedben időtálló kőből – carrarai márványból, indiai gránitból, süttői mészkőből – készített köztéri szobrai.

Az alkotóművész már korán elkötelezte magát a porcelán mellett; ebben látott lehetőséget a „másságra” a Magyar Iparművészeti Főiskola Szilikátipari Tervező Tanszékén, a főként agyaggal dolgozó keramikusművészek között. Saját műhelyében hosszú időn át kísérletezett a porcelánnal, míg elérte nagy méretben is azt a transzparens vékonyságú héjat, amely mára a védjegyévé vált. A rétegelést, elvékonyítást kézzel végzi,1 a letisztult, fehér színű felületeket pedig gyakran gazdagítja finom mintázattal úgy, hogy a még lágy állapotú porcelánba (hullám)papírt, textilt vagy rizsszemeket nyom, mely segédanyagok a magastüzű kemencében való égetés során – áttetsző nyomot hagyva – eltűnnek. Ennek az ősi kínai módszernek az alkalmazásával tudja megragadni, sőt műveinek egyik meghatározó témájává emelni a fényt.2 Az egyetemi éveket követően, már a nyolcvanas évek elején megfigyelhető Borza Teréz művészetében a növényi vegetáció és a természeti jelenségek plasztikai ideájának érzékeny megjelenítése,3 amely az első nagyszabású egyéni kiállításán szereplő munkáin is megmutatkozott. Az Ernst Múzeumban 1986-ban rendezett tárlaton mutatta be szétnyíló virágkelyheket idéző, áttört sziromlevelekből álló, hullámzó és fokozatosan elvékonyodó peremű porcelánjait (Virág, Virágzás), valamint az Hommage à Debussy című sorozatát. Ezekben az impresszionisztikus kompozíciókban4 „a zene lebegő akkordjai […] lebegő formákká, a felhangokkal színezett harmóniák csodálatosan finom faktúrákká, az áttört dallamok áttetsző fényekké […] változtak” és „a természet minden sejtelme; a szél, a hullám, a fény, a felhő, s mindezeknek valami kölcsönös egymásra hatása” jelen van.5 A kisméretű, szabadon álló plasztikák egyik kiemelkedő darabja Debussy Egy faun délutánja című szimfonikus költeményének Nimfája, melynek hullámzása egy antik női torzó látványát eleveníti fel a nézőben.6 A következő jelentős önálló kiállítását 1996-ban, Tavaszünnep címmel a Vigadó Galériában rendezte. Borza Teréz itt zöldellő pázsitra és filigrán, több irányba billenő fémpálcákra installálta hófehér porcelántárgyait, amelyek úgy egyensúlyoztak a „száraikon”, mint széltől hajladozó virágok a mezőn. A természet újjáéledését, belső rendjét tükröző, a természettel mélyen együtt lélegző7 alkotások mellett az emberi lét egymást követő, illetve felváltó – sokszor mindennapos – állapotai és a lélek változás-fázisai (Álom, Ébredés; Magány, Bezárkózás) váltak plasztikai valósággá.8 Emelkedettebb tartalmak, szakrális jelentések hordozója a Hómadár (később Ha majd leszáll) című porcelánmű, amely szárnyszerű alakjával és tiszta, fehér színével a Szentlelket szimbolizálhatja, valamint a művészi szabadságra, a képzelőerő kötetlen szárnyalására is utalhat.9 A porcelánművész az 1990-es évek végén új anyaggal, saját készítésű merített papír masszával kezdett el dolgozni, és az Újjászületés című, 2003-as tárlatán porcelánjai mellett a szintén organikus formavilágú papírmunkái közül is kiállított néhányat (Születés, Újjászületés I–II.). A nyers fenyőoszlopok magasába10 helyezve csaknem észrevehetetlenül bújtak meg keményebb anyagból készült társaik között, bár közelebbről szemlélve a felületük rusztikusabb, nyersebb, natúr színű; a művész több helyen a fény áteresztése végett hálószerű pálmaháncsot applikált a papírplasztikákba. Tojáshéjat vagy fészket idéző alakjukkal, illetve a címükkel (Feltörte, Kirepült, Elhagyott fészek) is utalnak a madárfiókák kikelésére, átvitt értelemben pedig a keletkezés és az elmúlás kettősségére, az élet pillanatnyiságára, az örök változásban rejlő állandóságra és mulandóságra.11 Borza Teréz munkásságában a fény jelenségének plasztikai megragadása, a változatos matériákkal elért transzparencia szoros összeköttetésben áll a transzcendens jelentésrétegekkel. alkotása is konkrét szakrális tartalmakat jelenít meg (Lepel, Megváltó),12 és két kiállításán kifejezetten vallásos tematikájú műveiből mutatott be válogatást: 2009-ben a Hegyvidék Galériában Hit-öröm címmel, később pedig a Vigadó kiállítóterében a Húsvét titka című tárlata járta körül a kereszténység legnagyobb ünnepének, a húsvétnak a témakörét az utolsó vacsora, a szenvedéstörténet és a feltámadás egységein keresztül.13 Ezen a kiállításon több olyan kompozíciója is helyet kapott, amelyben a durva, tömör fakérges felületet izgalmas kontrasztként ötvözi a merített papír fragilitásával („De volt mag, amely jó földbe hullott”14), valamint a porcelán finomságával, légiességével (Veletek maradok). Ez utóbbi alkotása a „keresztfára” applikált, lüktető, szikrázóan fehér porcelánszívvel valójában Krisztus feltámadására utal.15 A transzparencia és a transzcendencia összekapcsolódásának szép példája16 az életműben a Lélekfény című plasztika, amelyet átjár a belülről sugárzó „isteni” fény, megmutatva ezáltal a porcelánhártya aprólékos kimunkáltságát, fényáteresztő képességét.

Az alkotóművészt régóta foglalkoztatta a gondolat, hogyan ültethetők át porcelánműveinek esszenciális vonásai (légiesség, áttetszőség, finomság) egy időtállóbb, súlyosabb és ridegebb anyagba. Végül a fehér carrarai márványban találta meg azt a kőzetet, amellyel megfelelő megmunkálás révén hasonló hatást tudott elérni, mint a porcelán anyag esetében. Első köztéri szobra, a Hajnal/Fény17 is ebből a nemes kőzetből készült, és formavilágát tekintve közvetlen folytatása a kisplasztikáinak, elsősorban a Feltámadás fénye című, vallásos tematikájú porcelánjának. A madárszárny forma felszálló lelket, lebegő fohászt jelképez, utalva arra, hogy ezen a területen – a budai Gesztenyés-kertben – egykor egy sírkert volt.18 A 2014-ben az Egyetemisták parkjában felállított Mag (alcíme: „A jó földbe hulló tanítás magja bő termést hoz.”)19 süttői mészkőből készült. Erre az anyagra azért esett a választása, mert zárványokat rejtő, rusztikus felülete jobban illeszkedik a témához, mint a márvány. A köztéri munka előzményeként itt is egy porcelánplasztika szolgált, az ELTE Innovatív Kutatója díj, amely szintén Borza Teréz alkotása, s egy éppen kipattanó magot, a tudás magját ábrázolja.

Az 1956-os forradalom és szabadságharc hatvanadik évfordulójára Sopronba készült emlékművének20 anyaga vörös és fekete indiai gránit, ami a vér és a gyász színeit egyesíti. A lyukas zászlót vagy sírkövet idéző kőtömb felszínén stilizált embertömeg finom rajzolata jelenik meg, a „testeken” golyónyomokra utaló, különböző irányú furatok tátonganak. A ferdén lőtt lyukakon átszüremlő fény eltérő szemszögből más és más hatást kelt, ezzel is érzékeltetve az események drámaiságát.

Legfrissebb köztéri műve, a győri Püspökvár kertjében21 2020ban felavatott Árpád-házi Szent Margit fohásza Magyarországért című szoborkompozíció anyagában visszatér a carrarai márvány és a süttői mészkő kettőséhez. A három égbeszökő csúcsívből álló alkotás középpontjában Szent Margit látható, fénylő fehér márványból megmintázva, ami a királylány tisztaságát, erényességét jelzi. Két oldalán a művész a Magyar Királyság szimbólumát, a kettős keresztet, valamint Margit attribútumát, a Domonkos-rend címerében is megjelenő liliomot faragta a kolostort idéző boltívekbe. Az íves kapuk – melyeken átsüt az éltető napfény – egyfajta átjárónak is tekinthetők, összeköttetést biztosítanak evilág és túlvilág között.22 A Borza Teréz plasztikai munkáira áradó fény átlényegül az alkotásokkal való érintkezés során, és éteri fényként sugárzik tovább belőlük. Többek között ez az a többlet, az az eszmei mondanivaló, amely műveit egy más, emelkedettebb értéktartományba emeli, és átlépi a határt képzőművészet és iparművészet között.

The Importance of Light in the Art of Teréz Borza

Alongside Teréz Borza’s distinctive translucent and delicate porcelain sculptures, her uniquely diverse oeuvre includes her rustically textured dipped paper works and her public sculptures made in the last decade of time-resistant stone – Carrara marble, Indian granite, and Süttő limestone.

The artist committed herself to porcelain at an early stage; she saw this as an opportunity to be ‘different’ in the Department of Silicate Design at the Hungarian Academy of Applied Arts, among ceramicists working mainly with clay. She had experimented with porcelain in her own workshop for many years until she achieved the transparent, thin shell in large sizes that has become her trademark. She does the layering and the thinning by hand,1 and often enriches the clean white surfaces with subtle patterns by pressing (corrugated) paper, textiles or grains of rice into the porcelain while it is still soft, which then disappear during the process of firing in a high-temperature kiln, leaving a translucent trace. It is through the use of this ancient Chinese method that she is able to capture light and make it one of the dominant themes of her work.2 After her university years, already in the early eighties, Teréz Borza’s art was characterised by a sensitive representation of the plastic idea of plant vegetation and natural phenomena,3 which was also reflected in the works presented in her first large-scale solo exhibition. In the exhibition at the Ernst Museum in 1986, she presented her porcelain works with undulating and gradually thinning rims (Flower, Blooming), which resemble opening flower cups made up of reticulated petals, and her series Hommage à Debussy. In these impressionistic compositions4 „the floating chords of music [...] were transformed into floating forms, harmonies coloured with overtones into wonderfully delicate factures, broken melodies into translucent lights [...]” and „all the ideas of nature are present: wind, wave, light, cloud, and some unique interplay of all these”.5 One of the highlights of the small, free-standing sculptures is the Nymph of Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, whose undulations evoke the sight of an antique female torso.6 Her next major solo exhibition, entitled Celebration of Spring, was held in 1996, at the Vigadó Gallery. Here, Teréz Borza has installed her snow-white porcelain pieces on lush green lawns and delicate metal poles bending in several directions, balancing on their ‘stems’ like wind-blown flowers in a field.

In addition to works reflecting the revival and inner order of nature, breathing in deep harmony with nature7, the successive and alternating – often everyday – states of human existence and the changing phases of the soul (Dream, Awakening; Solitude, Seclusion) have become a plastic reality.8 The porcelain work Snowbird (later When It Will Settle) carries more sublime and sacral meanings, with its wing-like shape and pure white colour it may symbolise the Holy Spirit, but it could also refer to artistic freedom and the boundless flight of imagination.9 At the end of the 1990s, the porcelain artist started to work with a new material, her own homemade dipped paper pulp, and in her 2003 exhibition Rebirth, in addition to her porcelain works, she also exhibited some of her paper works with an equally organic design (Birth, Rebirth I–II). Placed high up on raw pine poles,10 they hide almost imperceptibly among their harder counterparts, although on closer inspection their surface has a more rustic, raw, natural colour; in several places the artist has applied mesh-like raffia to the paper sculptures to allow light to pass through them. With their eggshell- or nestlike shapes and their titles (Cracked, Fledged, Abandoned Nest) they refer to the hatching of baby birds, and figuratively to the duality of emergence and passing, the transience of life, the permanence and impermanence inherent in eternal change.11 Teréz Borza’s works, created from a variety of materials, capture the phenomenon of light, transparency, in a plastic way, and in close connection with this, they offer transcendental layers of meaning. Several of her works depict explicit sacral content (Shroud, Saviour),12 and in two of her exhibitions she presented a selection of works with a distinctly religious

theme: in 2009 at the Hegyvidék Gallery, under the title Joy in Faith, and later at the Vigadó Gallery, her exhibition The Secret of Easter explored the subject of the greatest feast of Christianity through the themes of the Last Supper, the Passion and the Resurrection.13 This exhibition also included several of her compositions, in which she combined the rough, solid bark surface with the fragility of dipped paper („Still Other Seed Fell On Good Soil”14), and the delicacy and airiness of porcelain (I’m Staying With You) in an exciting contrast.

This latter work, with its pulsating, sparkling white porcelain heart applied to the ‘tree of the cross’, actually refers to the resurrection of Christ.15 A beautiful example of the combination of transparency and transcendence16 in her oeuvre is the sculpture entitled Light of the Soul, which is permeated by the ‘divine’ light radiating from within, thus showing the meticulous workmanship and translucency of the porcelain membrane.

The artist has long been interested in how the essential qualities of her porcelain works (airiness, translucency, delicacy) can be translated into a more durable, heavier and more rigid material. Finally, it was in the white marble of Carrara that she found the stone that, with the right treatment, she could achieve an effect similar to that of porcelain. Her first public sculpture, Dawn/Light17, was also made of this noble stone, and in terms of its formal style it represents a direct continuation of her small sculptures, especially her religiously themed porcelain work Light of the Resurrection. The shape of a bird’s wing symbolizes a rising soul, a floating prayer, referring to the fact that the area – the Gesztenyés-kert in Buda – used to be a graveyard once.18 Seed (subtitle: „The seed of teaching falling on good soil delivers a bountiful harvest.”)19 erected in 2014 in Egyetemisták parkja (in Budapest) is made of limestone from Süttő. She chose this material because its rustic surface with inclusions was more suited to the theme than marble. The precursor of this public work was again a porcelain sculpture, the ELTE Innovative Researcher Award, also by Teréz Borza, which depicts a bursting seed, representing the seed of knowledge.

Her memorial in Sopron commemorating the sixtieth anniversary of the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence20 is made of red and black Indian granite, combining the colours of blood and mourning. On the surface of the stone block, reminiscent of a flag with a hole or a tombstone, there is a delicate motif depicting a stylised mass of people, with variously oriented holes in the ‘bodies’, suggesting bullet holes.

The light streaming through the obliquely shot holes produces different effects from different angles, thus underlining the dramatic nature of the events.

In her most recent public work, the sculptural composition entitled Saint Margaret’s Prayer for Hungary, unveiled in 2020 in the garden of the Bishop’s Castle in Győr21, she returns to the dual use of Carrara marble and Süttő limestone.

The centrepiece of the work, which consists of three ogival arches, features Saint Margaret of Hungary, sculpted in gleaming white marble, symbolising the purity and chastity of the princess. On her two sides, the artist carved the double cross, the symbol of the Kingdom of Hungary, and the lily, the attribute of Margaret, which also appears in the coat of arms of the Order of St. Dominic, into the arches that evoke the monastery. The arched doorways – allowing the sun’s invigorating rays to shine through – can also be seen as a kind of portal, providing a passage between the mundane world and the afterlife.22 The light that shines on Teréz Borza’s plastic works transcends through the contact with her sculptures and is further emitted as ethereal light. Among other things, it is this added value, this spiritual dimension, that elevates her works to a different, more sublime realm of values and crosses the boundary between fine art and applied arts.

letett Budapesten. 1979-ben a Magyar Iparművészeti Főiskola Szilikátipari Tervező Tanszékén, porcelán szakon szerzett diplomát, mestere Schrammel Imre, formatan tanára pedig Józsa Bálint volt. 1980-tól szabadfoglalkozású művész. 1987-től tagja a Magyar Képző- és Iparművészek Szövetségének, 1992-től a Magyar Alkotóművészek Országos Egyesületének, 1996-tól pedig a Magyar Szobrász Társaságnak.

Porcelain artist and sculptor Teréz Borza was born in Budapest on 12 March 1953. She graduated in 1979 from the Department of Silicate Design at the Hungarian Academy of Applied Arts, majoring in porcelain, under the supervision of Imre Schrammel and Bálint Józsa. Since 1980 she has been a freelance artist. Since 1987 she has been a member of the Association of Hungarian Fine and Applied Artists, since 1992 of the Association of Hungarian Creative Artists and since 1996 of the Hungarian Sculptors’ Society.

Pályája kezdetétől folyamatosan kiállít itthon és külföldön. Első jelentős egyéni tárlatára 1986-ban Budapesten, az Ernst Múzeumban került sor, 1996-ban, 2003-ban és 2017-ben pedig a Vigadó Galériában nyílt addigi munkásságát átfogó önálló kiállítása. Egyéni tárlatok keretében mutatta be műveit Balatonfüreden, Szegeden, Kaposváron, Győrben, Fonyódon, valamint Bécsben, Prágában, Amszterdamban, Szófiában, Brüsszelben, Hamburgban, Ouluben, Szozopolban és Strasbourgban.

Számos hazai és nemzetközi csoportos kiállításon is szerepelt munkáival, többek között Kecskeméten, Pécsen, Szentendrén, Gödöllőn, Faenzában, Vallaurisban, Zágrábban, Philadelphiában, Tokióban, Bolognában, Padovában, Kairóban, Aucklandben, Ljubljanában, Rigában és Pekingben. Kisplasztikái megtalálhatók az Iparművészeti Múzeum, a Szombathelyi Képtár, a Rippl-Rónai Múzeum gyűjteményében és több külföldi közgyűjteményben is.

Since the beginning of her professional career, she has been exhibiting continuously both in Hungary and abroad. Her first major solo exhibition took place at the Ernst Museum in Budapest in 1986, while in 1996, 2003 and 2017 she had solo exhibitions at the Vigadó Gallery, where she presented her work spanning her entire artistic career up to those dates. She has presented her work in solo exhibitions in Balatonfüred, Szeged, Kaposvár, Győr, Fonyód, as well as in Vienna, Prague, Amsterdam, Sofia, Brussels, Hamburg, Oulu, Sozopol and Strasbourg. She has participated in numerous domestic and international group exhibitions, including in Kecskemét, Pécs, Szentendre, Gödöllő, Faenza, Vallauris, Zagreb, Philadelphia, Tokyo, Bologna, Padua, Cairo, Auckland, Ljubljana, Riga and Beijing. Her small sculptures can be found in the collections of the Museum of Applied Arts, the Szombathely Gallery, the Rippl-Rónai Museum and in several public collections abroad.

Az 1980-as évektől kezdve művészetét számtalan díjjal ismerték el: a zágrábi Mini Kerámia Triennálé zsűrije „Honorary Degree” oklevéllel, a Mino-i Nemzetközi Kerámia Fesztiválon „Honorable Mention” elismeréssel, a kairói Nemzetközi Kerámia Biennálén a Művelődési Minisztérium különdíjával jutalmazták. 1998-ban kiemelkedő iparművészeti tevékenységéért Ferenczy Noémi-díjban részesült. A IV. Pelso Országos Kerámia és Gobelin Biennálén Keszthely város díját, 2015-ben pedig a Magyar Alkotóművészek Országos Egyesületének szakmai díját nyerte el.

Starting from the 1980s, her art has been recognized with numerous awards: she was awarded an „Honorary Degree” by the jury of the Zagreb Mini Ceramics Triennial, an „Honorable Mention” at the Mino International Ceramics Festival, and a special prize of the Ministry of Culture at the Cairo International Ceramics Biennial. In 1998, she received the Noémi Ferenczy Award for her outstanding work in applied arts. She won the prize of the city of Keszthely at the 4th Pelso National Ceramics and Tapestry Biennial, and in 2015 the professional award of the Association of Hungarian Creative Artists.

Alkotói munkássága mellett jelentős a művészetszervező tevékenysége is: 1993 és 2001 között a Fiatal Iparművészek Stúdiójának elnöke volt, 1993-tól 2003-ig a Moholy-Nagy László Formatervezési Ösztöndíj, 2006-ig a Kozma Lajos Kézműves Iparművészeti Ösztöndíj, 1994 és 2001 között a Nemzeti Kulturális Alapprogram Iparművészeti Kollégiumának kurátora, 1997-től 2012-ig a HUNGART Egyesület elnökségi tagja volt. 2009 óta a Galéria 12 Egyesület elnöke, 2014-től a Magyar Művészeti Akadémia köztestületi tagja.

In addition to her creative work, she has also been a significant art organizer: between 1993 and 2001 she was the president of the Studio of Young Artists, between 1993 and 2003 she was a curator of the László Moholy-Nagy Design Grant, between 1993 and 2006 of the Lajos Kozma Crafts and Design Grant, between 1994 and 2001 of the Applied Arts Board of the National Cultural Fund, and between 1997 and 2012 she was a member of the board of the HUNGART Association. Since 2009 she has been the president of the Galéria 12 Association, and since 2014 a member of the public body of the Hungarian Academy of Arts.

Életművéről 2020-ban jelent meg monográfia a HUNGART Egyesület kiadásában, Szeifert Judit művészettörténész átfogó tanulmányával.

A monograph on her life’s work was published in 2020 by the HUNGART Association, with a comprehensive study by art historian Judit Szeifert.
