FROM THE PASTOR I talk about my family, but I don't often mention the closeness my family enjoys with our cousins. My cousin Mary is, in the words of her husband Doug, "a very special woman." Mary is soft spoken, steadily kind, and always with a pleasant smile. Humble by nature and God's grace, she prefers to let others take the stage and tell the jokes and lead conversation while she herself just delights in their company. A few years ago, Mary donated a kidney to someone she hardly knew. And in September 2015, she had an experience that I want to tell you about this Mother's Day. Her husband Doug's little sister Lisa was dying rather quickly in her hospital room. Mary, Doug, and his mother kept vigil by Lisa's bedside. They continued to pray Hail Marys late into the night. Doug and his mother fell asleep, which Mary tells me reminded her of Jesus' disciples falling asleep in the garden that night. She continued to softly invoke our Blessed Mother in prayer as nurses came in and out. Around 3:00 a.m. someone appeared there along the wall. It wasn't a nurse. She wore a veil, and Mary could not see her hair, but her eyes were full of compassion and were looking at Mary and Lisa. Mary looked away a minute, thinking her eyes were playing tricks. When she looked back, the one she knew was the Blessed Mother was flanked with angels. Mary said she is certain she was awake, and she was certain who the visitor was. Mary was not aware that Lisa's last night--the night of the Virgin Mary's visit--was the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, September 15. Thank you, mothers, for being with us in good times and bad. Thank you, Jesus, for giving us your Blessed Mother to watch over us and remind us that heaven is real. --Fr. Berns

WELCOME TO OUR LADY OF PEACE PARISH
PARISH NEWS Pondering and Praying with Mary Our Spiritual Mother By Seminarian Arturo Vigueras Throughout the Gospels we see the Virgin Mary demonstrating the full range of prayerful attitudes: thanksgiving and praise (Magnificat), petition (Cana), humble surrender (Annunciation), painful acceptance of the will of God (Calvary), obedience (Presentation), concern for others (Visitation), learning in faith (Finding in the Temple) and offering (Calvary). At the core of these prayerful attitudes, Mary displays a consistent attitude towards God: Mary always prays “with a noble and generous heart,” seeking to hear the word of God, take it to herself, and yield a harvest through perseverance. The first disposition of prayer is that one must have a listening heart. Even if we want to ask God a favor, we should first attempt to find out what He has to say us. However, if anyone who has consistently tried to pray knows, God does not always seem to be saying anything in our prayers. How can we listen to Him if he is not speaking? Here Mary can be of help to us. Luke twice tells that Mary “treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart” (Luke 2:19, and 2:51) and what were “these things”? From the context we can see that “these things” were primary events in her life: the birth of Jesus and the visit of the shepherds on Christmas night, and the finding of Jesus in the temple. Mary “listened” to these events. She sought to figure out what God was saying to her in the things that happened to her. Even though she did not fully understand at first, Mary had to ponder these things in her heart before she could sense the hand of God in her life. The same thing happens to us when God does not always

speak to us directly in prayer. Sometimes indeed he does, and as he spoke to Mary at the Annunciation. But more often than not, God manifests his will in the people we meet and the events of our daily lives. This means that our prayerful attitude must extend into all aspects of our daily life so that we can constantly be alert to pick up what He is saying and asking of us. This does not mean that we must spend a lot of time in formal prayer time, but rather we must have a prayerful attitude throughout our day so that our prayer life permeates everything that we do. For example, Mary prayed always, because she was always a disciple, ever ready to hear the word of God and put it into practice in her everyday life. Besides Mary being able to recognize how God was working in her life, she also was able to have a reflective attitude in her prayer. St. Luke tells us that Mary “pondered all these things” in her life. Sometimes the word of God is not always clear to us in the present events of our life. This means that we need to spend time reflecting on the word of God in light of our past; and as we continue this process of reflecting, we recall the deeds that God has done in our life. As we do this, we detect a pattern in all the many things that have happened. The good times and the bad, the doubts, and difficulties, the sorrows, and joys, the defeats, and triumphs of our lives that reveal that God has been guiding us to the point where we find ourselves now. This will help us to see our present situation and give us context to be able to see how God is still guiding us throughout the difficulties we presently face in our lives. DIOCESE OF LA CROSSE GUIDELINES FOR REPORTING INSTANCES OF CHILD ABUSE The Diocese of La Crosse, through its policies and procedures, seeks to provide a prompt, appropriate and compassionate response to reporters of sexual abuse of a child by any diocesan agent (employee, volunteers, vendors, religious or clergy). Box 4004, La Crosse, WI 54602-4004. Alternatively, you can contact Mrs. Karen Becker, Victim Assistance Ministry, 608-519-8002 or kbecker@cclse.org. The reporting form is available through the Diocese of La Crosse Office of the Vicar for Clergy or on the diocesan website at: www.diolc.org. Individuals are also encouraged to take their reports directly to civil authorities. Copies of the diocesan policy are available through your local parish and on the diocesan website.
