Have you heard of the patron saint of purity? Born to peasant parents in southern Italy, St. Maria Goretti was a devout girl whose life was marked by difficulty. Her father died when she was nine, leaving her single mother with six mouths to feed. Two neighbors helped on the family farm, including a young man named Alessandro. He began making crude comments towards Maria. She repeatedly denied him. After several years, Alessandro attacked Maria to force himself on her. She resisted and, in his anger, Alessandro stabbed her. Maria died from the wounds' infections, but her last words were "I forgive Alessandro Serenelli, and I want him with me in heaven forever." While he was in prison, Maria appeared to Alessandro with a bouquet of roses, one for each wound he inflicted. In a true miracle of mercy, Alessandro experienced repentance, became a Franciscan brother after his release, and was later present at Maria's canonization. St. Maria Goretti, pray for us!

Immediate openings at Our Lord at Pope St. John Paul II Perpetual Adoration Chapel, 510 S. Columbus Ave., on Tuesdays 1pm-2pm and Saturdays from 11am-noon. If you are able to adore at one or both of these times please call Jean at 715-387-0571 or Dale at 715-383-2262. God Bless You!

PARISH NEWS TAKING A LEAP OF FAITH

We are currently in need of volunteers to help serve our parish in the following two areas: 1. Office Help— Main task will be answering phones. Times available are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8-Noon and Monday, Wednesday, Friday afternoons from noon-4. 2. Religious Education Teachers and Teacher Assistants If interested or want to learn more contact Kara at office@olpmarshfield.com or 715-384-9414 Capital Improvement Campaign Update — June 25, 2018 There are so many varied meanings of the word "legacy". The one we choose here is 'something handed down from generation to generation'. Think of the generations of families that have crossed the thresholds of Our Lady of Peace Parish and all it encompasses. A lot of children from when the parish first began are now grandparents. As we look at the campaign, we should be looking at it as a form of legacy that we are leaving for generations to come. Keeping our buildings and campus in the best condition possible is our legacy for future generations.

As of June 25: 134 donors have pledged/donated $254,140.87. This is 67.8% of our $375,000 goal. Every little bit will contribute to a legacy that will live on for generations. Thank you for your generosity.

OLP Ministry/Group Who’s Who Update Request The “hidden” ministries/groups of OLP are many. Do you know what they are? With our new parish priest, Fr. Douglas Robertson, joining us very soon, it’s time to update our records and to identify what the ministries/groups are, how they work with the parish and the contact person. If you are a leader of a ministry/group at OLP, please contact office@olpmarshfield.com. We would be most happy to talk with you more about the ministry/group you lead and find out if there is anything that you need. We will be making phone calls to those we think we know are still operational and have a leader over the next couple of weeks. Thank you for your cooperation.

JULY 1, 2018 ● 13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

By Seminarian Arturo Vigueras In today’s Gospel, we hear of two stories of healing. In the first story of healing, we hear about a father’s great love for his dying daughter. In the second story, we hear about a desperate woman who risks everything to seek healing from Jesus. In each of these stories, the request for healing is a courageous act of faith; and yet, each story has different circumstances that are represented by the lives of each suffering person. In the first story of healing, we meet Jairus, who is described by the Gospel of Mark, as a synagogue official; this means that he is a man well regarded in the Jewish community. Despite his good standing within the Jewish community, Jairus is troubled over the poor health of his daughter and thus he takes a leap of faith and asks Jesus to heal his daughter. Even though Mark does not give us any details about the health of Jairus’ daughter, we can conclude from the gospel reading that Jairus’ daughter has been ill for some time and that her health is quickly deteriorating. So as Jesus leaves with Jairus to heal his daughter, Mark tells us of a second person who seeks healing from Jesus; this person is a woman with a hemorrhage. This woman, unlike Jairus, secretly touches Jesus’ cloak from behind and is immediately cured. Jesus, in response to the woman’s touch, turns and asks for the person who touched him. The disciples of Jesus help us to imagine this scene by telling us that there were a lot of people trying to reach Jesus; and we see that the woman could have remained anonymous. However, as Jesus wants to know the person who just touched him, the woman steps forward and acknowledges what she has done. To the woman’s surprise, Jesus responds by acknowledging the woman as a role model of faith and sends her away in peace. At this point, you can imagine Jairus’ impatience with Jesus; as his daughter is dying and Jesus has not helped her yet. Matthew further adds to the sense of urgency by telling us that messengers suddenly arrive and tell Jairus that his daughter has died. However, Jesus curiously ignores their messages and assures Jairus that his daughter will be fine. When Jesus and his followers arrive at Jairus’ home, they find family and friends mourning the girl’s death. Jesus, however, enters the girl’s room, takes her by the hand and instructs the girl to arise; and the girl is cured. We also see that Jairus’ faith in Jesus is not in vain because his daughter is restored to life. The differences between Jairus and the woman with the hemorrhage are stark and revealing. One is a man, and the other is a woman. One is a public official, an important person, in the community. The other is a woman who has lost everything to find a cure for a condition that had separated her from the community. One approaches Jesus publicly, while the other one approaches Jesus in secret. Yet, it is faith that leads them to seek out Jesus in their time of need. The Gospel concludes with Jesus instructing his disciples to remain silent about these two miracles. The people, who witnessed the miracles, are instructed by Jesus to not speak of what they saw. This instruction appears impossible to obey; and it is even more difficult to understand why Jesus would tell his followers not to speak of the authority and power that Jesus showed them by doing these awesome miracles. However, each story appears to emphasize the fact that everyone in these two miracle stories, including the reader of Mark’s Gospel, must, in the end, make his or her own judgment about who Jesus is. This means that everyone must make his or her own act of faith and come to know and accept Jesus as the Son of God. As you go about your busy week, ponder and remember that our God is a God of surprises; a God who changes mourning into dancing. The challenge for us lies in resisting the distractions of the world. Remember that Jesus is himself the life and light if we hold fast to his promises and persevere in our faith. We may not always get what we want, but we will always get the healing that we need.
