Nutritionist Finds Overfeeding Cause At Least One-Half of U.S. Deaths The United States is o n e of t h e w o r l d ' s r i c h nations w h i c h faces t h e grave danger o f habitual overfeeding that accounts f o rhigh m o r tality from degenerative d i seases, said a n international famed nutritionist.

V. N . P a t w a r d h a n , head o f t h e nutrition section of t h e W o r l d H e a l t h Organization, a t Geneva, w a r n e d that degenerative diseases cause one-half o f deaths i n the United States.

"The developed a n d affluent countries haV% a n u trition problem o f t h e i r own," he explained to the Western Hemisphere Nutrition congress i n session a t Chicago's Edgewater Beach Hotel. P a t w a r d h a n predicted the problems "will have to be m e t i n t h e c o m i n g decade."

ing t h e U n i t e d States, h e said, t h e over-all m o r t a l i t y is l o w . A v e r a g e l i f e e x p e c t ancy at birth ranges from 65 t o 7 4 y e a r s b e c a u s e l i v i n g standards a r e high, health services efficient, a n d food ample.

BUT, H E SAID, "mortality d u e t o degenerative d i seases a n d m a l i g n a n t neoplasms, h a s increased ( i n these countries), f o r m i n g a n appreciable portion o f the total m o r t a l i t y . " Such deaths " m a y easily account for m o r e t h a n 50 p e r cent o f the total m o r t a l i t y i n these countries," h e added.
