Justice For The Black B v

The most important thing among the Nation of Black and white is the doings of justice between the two. THE DIVINE LAW of justice is not hard to obey and execute if by nature we have any good in us, for it takes good to justify good and condemn other than good. Today, we live in the time that the Divine Supreme Being Desires above all things, Freedom, Justice, and Equality for the poor, Black Man in the mud. Master Fard Muhammad, to Whom Praises are Due Forever (God in Person) Is Making His Appearance among us here in North America. He Has Chosen the Black Man in America for His Own and Desires Justice for us. His Intention is to force justice so that He may make it triumph over injustice and destroy those who willfully and knowingly try to hinder the work of justice among us. God is Determined to see that the Black Man gets justice—Divine Justice. This is putting America and England in a very dangerous and difficult position among the Nations of the earth. The American so-called Negro (Lost and Found Members of the old ancient—ancient of the ancient— the Originator of the heaven and the earth) are members of God. They have been mistreated and deprived of justice and no one, as Isaiah of the Bible prophesies, has sought justice for us. Since we had no one to offer us justice and to help us get justice, this is the purpose of Master Fard Muhammad (God in Person) Coming: To take it upon Himself to give justice to us, a whole Nation in a nation lying at the mercy of a merciless people for 400 years; begging for justice under their law. And, to this day we have not enjoyed anything like justice. Now, the cry among Black people every-

where is: "Let me go. I want justice." And, a great separation is now in the working. By no means should America be seeking to keep them (Black people) in an integrated position against the will of the Black people. The Black people want their own schools, taught under Black teachers and out from mixed Black and white schools. America is not willing to give this, but a hundred years ago, 50 years ago, and 25 years ago, she wanted nothing better than a Negro segregated from white people. They would kill and lynch us if we tried to get in their schools and in their churches. Now, today they are beckoning to the poor little Black girl and boy to come in and stay with white children, where by no means will they ever have any more peace together today than they ever had. If America wants the Black Man to remain with them, do justice by us and do not give us a hypocriti-" cal justice. I say to all Black people: Be yourself and stop throwing yourselves and your children into the fire while you can stay out of it, by being yourself. For over thirty-five (35) years, we the Muslims, have been able to get along in peace in our schools —alone to ourselves. We have no trouble whatsoever as far as disunity and immoral practices among the children. They are good. We are not spotless but we are on the road to try to clear the spots of other nations that have spotted our garments. We must have separation to rebuild the falling Black members of that mighty Black Nation. Number one, we must love ourselves (Black). We must protect the interest of the Black Man and the Black Woman. We must, of all people of the earth, protect our Black woman from being an open prey or prostitute for the races and nations of the earth. Girls from fifteen years old up to 25 and 35 years old walk the streets all hours of the night, offering

GARY MAYOR Richard G. Hatcher told a recent city council session that "Charges of a breakdown in law and order (in Gary) are obviously false." His remarks were in response to attacks from council members who charged Hatcher was going "too soft" on the Black community and should initiate a police crack-down on all urban areas. Hatcher defended his position by praising the police department for "an effective job of law enforcement" and stressed his administration was seeking "constructive" solutions to the problems of crime in Gary. *

"H circumstances had been more favorable," he wrote, ". . . we certainly would have come among you . . . in your hard trials and to make you feel how deeply we share in them." * * *

COOPERATION BETWEEN Algeria and the Soviet Union is becoming more evident, according to world observers. Plans to hold a Soviet film festival in the capital city of Algiers is expected to precede announcements that the two countries are discussing increased trade agreements. North

Carolina

Disguised by John Woodford SWAN QUARTER, N.C. —Hyde County forms part of the eastern shore of North Carolina. It is that state's poorest county in per capita income even though it contains rich fishing and game preserves and supports part of the nation's multimillion dollar sea food industry. Greedy whites wrench what they can from this land and the poor people—white and Black— who live on it. The labor of the poor people barely s u s t a i n s them. In an era of unmatched luxury, waste and wartime profits, the average Black man in Hyde County receives $700 a year. The figure for Black and white combined is $1,143 a year. Poor as the whites may be, they still average $1,800 a year: that's over 2% times what the Black person earns. Both groups of poor people receive income supplements from the county welfare department. But since the welfare department is hardcore racist, there is no doubt as to who is being cheated and who is being fattened by the welfare board. It isn't hard to prove the charge of racism. A check of health, food supply and living conditions clearly shows—by sight alone— that the welfare board is merely an instrument of slow torture and murder in the hands of white racists. If more proof is needed, the welfare board itself provides it. But first the background: as most of the country learned in r e c e n t weeks, Hyde County Black people have conducted a better than 90 per cent effective b o y c o t t against the county schools. The boycott has run ever since September. THE U.S. NEWS media, fishing for "novelty" as it does, only skimmed the surface of the Hyde County situation by reporting, with amusement, that some sort of crazy or u n g r a t e f u l Blacks were rejecting the chance to go to a previously white school. What really happened is that racist school officials drew up an "integration" plan with the U.S. Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare without consulting the county's Afro-American community which represents 60 per cent of the county residents. When rumors of the possible closing of the two Black schools —Davis and Peay—began to crop up, the white officials assured the Afro-Americans that nothing would be done without consulting Ihem. But in August, Black people received letters announcing that their children in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades would be sent to Mattamuskeet School, located in a predominantly white Klu Klux Klan-controlled area. This was to be the first step in a program to phase out the Black schools altogether. Whenever Blacks saw each other last August they assured each other that this was the last straw, that the white man had gone too far. They had called in no outside organizations to culti-

SWAN QUARTER, N.C., is site of most demonstrations during Black school boycott. White chickens symbolized "white chicken community" which tried to close Black schools.

Whites said Blacks were cruel to chickens; they expressed no concern for Black girl who broke her pelvis as result of police teargassing.

The idea of the school boycott grew naturally among them like some wild and beautiful African flower. Whites grew w o r r i e d . They knew that school funds match enrollment and that a Black boycott could cripple their nextyear's budget. They thought they could fast-talk the Afro-Americans into agreement with the trick word "integration." But during one of several hot meetings, a Black man rose to his feet and shouted: " I ' l l see my children dead before I let you take them to your school."

SCLC sent two l o c a l men, James Barrow of Washington, N.C., and Golden Frinks of Edenton, to help the Hyde County Blacks. The boycott grew firm and extended into the economic area. Blacks are waging a 94 per cent effective boycott of racist-run businesses, instructing the whites that they will trade with them if the whites use their influence to back the Blacks demands for a fair share of the power. At first whites tried the timeworn tactic of holding a big Klan meeting in Fairfield on Sept. 13, three days after schools opened without Black students. Whites Exclude Blacks, Puerto Ricans From NYC School Strike 'Settlement' By Joe Walker NEW YORK—It remains to be seen whether the t e a c h e r s ' strike, an on-again, off-again affair, has really been settled by the agreement worked out November 17. He wrote that the Ocean Hill-Brownsville dispute has nationwide proportions and "it is, in fact, the struggle to abort colonialism in urban education. There is no urban community across the face of the United States whose destiny will not be affected by the outcome of this contest. It will determine whether or not the Black community, suffering under the tyranny of absentee domination of its school system, will have a voice in its children's education.

The jails of America are the 'Nazi' concentration camps for Blacks; no more for 'rehabilitation' than Nazi camps were for Jews; steel and stone coffins that grind the victims into garbage. Through some protoplasmic wonder, the majority of Black youths, even in the worst ghettos, somehow manage to survive without the scars of incarceration. But the past decade has seen such wanton, punitive jailings of Blacks that some communities have half of their male population interned before their 21st birthday. Undisguised genocide under the holy name of "law and order" is part of the system which made heroes of the criminals who exterminated the Indians. And unless the Black community is aroused for a life-and-death struggle to save its youths, it too will become victim of a system aimed at exterminating rather than aiding. Only a determined Black community can initiate and carry out the means necessary to correct and free their youths — for therein lies their future . . . the same 'future' now being sucked into petty crimes and deposited in sewers of jails. In every major city in the United States the jails and prisons have a 60-90 per cent Black population. To better inform our readers about prison conditions MUHAMMAD SPEAKS continues with its four-part series examining the jail population of such cities as Washington, D.C, New York, Los Angeles and New Orleans.

THE REPORT confirms the widely held belief that arrests and incarcerations of Black men and women, in jails and prisons around the c o u n t r y , have reached a l a r m i n g proportions. This is particularly true in the District of Columbia where more than 90 per cent of the average daily penal population is Black. Dr. Stuart N. Adams, noted Maryland University professor and Director of research and planning for the Department of Corrections acknowledges t h a t the district's prison population is "growing too Black, too fast." In an interview with MUHAMMAD SPEAKS, Dr. Adams stated that many penal authorities "have come to recognize this problem and are attempting to deal with it." IT MUST be stated however, that Adams' views are not unanimously shared by other prison authorities who favor the "business as usual" approach in dealing with Black people. Most prison authorities here are quick to cite the district's Black civilian population which now stands at 68 per cent. Others refuse to consider the question of racism, and argue, "a criminal is a criminal, Black or white." Dr. Adams, while not justifying criminal offenses, admits that the Black man is finding "that

I njversilv of f l i i n i o o (Special to Muhammad Speaks) Bitter resentment in the Black community against the University of Chicago has swelled here over what many believe was a punitive "U of C directed" verdict against three Black youths convicted on flimsy evidence of allegedly murdering a white U of C student.

reasons of having murdered that Black youth. HOW LONG, how long must this i n s i d i o u s kangaroo court spectacle be permitted to continue? A Black man's life is worth less than the expressed contempt of any white thug or hoodlum. A white man's life is perforce immune to the very suspicion that some Black youth or adult has struck him down. "The roots of this dubious interpretation of justice lie directly in the slave history of Black people in this country. Stanley Elkins and W.E.B. DuBois among others have noted that the systematic subjugation of Black people was reinforced by a code of violence against their person that is beyond description. Black men who were considered i n s u b o r d i n a t e were whipped first; if this trait remained their ears were then cut off; if such self assertion was still present they were summarily castrated; the fourth offense more often than not brought death.

THREE YOUNG Blacks were given sentences of 100-150 years (life-plus) following their conviction by an all-white jury for allegedly participating in the killing of the U of C student. The Rev. Jesse Jackson of Ope r a t i o n Breadbasket issued a statement from his hospital bed which read in part: "The sentence having been rendered must now be viewed against the fact that the group of white hoodlums who bludgeoned Jerome Huey to his death while he was enroute seeking employment in Cicero are now walking the streets. "HOW AKIN TO this denigration of our manhood are the actions of the courts of this and other cities throughout the nation. Black people are deprived of any significant voice or choice in their destiny. They are the last hired and first fired; their schools are segregated and substandard and each day brings on another insult to further abrase the injury already suffered.

A f r i c a

(MUHAMMAD SPEAKS WASHINGTON BUREAU) By Lonnie Kashif WASHINGTON—The President of the East African Students' Union in the Americas expressed the belief that what is now happening in Nigeria may soon happen in East Africa. Odeyo Ayaga, c o n f i d i n g his views in an interview with MUH A M M AD SPEAKS, s a i d that the white press "only reports news out of Africa, when there is a crisis." Emphasizing his s t a r t l i n g conclusions o n the s t a t e of Kenyatta East A f r i c a , Ayaga said that "the people are not being told in naked language what is happening there, and who is doing what." The coming crisis in East Africa, as Ayaga sees it, will take a somewhat different form however, in that efforts toward 'unity' rather than secession will rest at the core. "The Student union seeks to mobilize its student body to put pressure on their governments to bring about a united Africa," Ayaga says. Since 1964, Ayaga says that the e f f o r t s toward African Unity have been hampered by African rulers who "have outlived their usefullness." One such African leader, Ayaga states, is Jomo Kenyetta, Prime Minister of his own native country, Kenya. Ayaga remarked, "He is my leader, but he has become a drawback." It was his fame as a Mau Mau, Ayaga says of Kenyetta, "that caused the people to admire him." AYAGA now feels that support should be given to such young l e a d e r s in Kenya as Oginga Odinga, former Vice President in Kenyetta's cabinet. "All of the East African countries expected and would have accepted Kenyatta's leadership, when Kenya gained independence in 1964." Now however, Ayaga contends, Kenyetta no longer is regarded as suitable for African leadership. "Kenya is now more conservative than Liberia," he said. Ayaga sees only "two ways" to bring about unity of nations in Africa: voluntary, or by conquest. He said that Nigeria could have gradually absorbed other smaller states had there not been outside interference. And voluntary unity seems doomed to failure because of interference from America, Britian and France, he concludes. Ayaga also cited the overthrow of Nkrumah and Ben Bella as examples of Western interference. "The Black man in Africa needs to learn more about the white man," he said. "And he'll have to learn from the Black man here in Ameri-

ODEYO A Y A G A , President East African Student Union in America. ca," he added. The Nations of Tanzania, Zambia and Uganda now stand high on the list of " p r o g r e s s i v e " countries cited by the EASUA, Ayaga said. THE EASUA has in it's membership students from 10 independent and 3 government-in-exile states. Ayaga listed them as Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Somalia, Ethiopia, Ruanda, Burundi, Maurtius, and non-independent s t a t e s , Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Azania. Past Presidents of the EASUA have come from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, beginning in 1961. Ayaga was elected to head the 2000-member union at the annual conference earlier this year. He is hopeful that "everybody will become more conscious of Africa." "There needs to be more exchange between the African governments and the Black man in America," he continued. Since the Black man in America is not represented as a Nation, Ayaga said that he believes that African governments should deal directly with Black organizations. Ayaga also spoke about the p r o b l e m s facing African students. He stated that usually Africans attend white universities in America, and are befriended by the whites, so much so that other Blacks on the campus feel that they prefer whites—and the African in turn feels that the Black American "rebuffs" him. This Ayaga recognizes as a part of the clever acts of deception by whites in America. THE PROBLEM of the African wpmen is the same, Ayaga contends, they are "sometimes left only to go out with white men." The" EASUA, he said, discusses these problems and tries to solve them for the students. "We encourage students to take the African sister out, if only as a friend and sister, but take her out." Speaking again of Africa, Ayaga complained of the white-controlled News media, especially in his own state of Kenya. "This is why we need outside publicity," he explains. Ayaga also stated that the EASUA proposes to fight to eliminate the teaching of "Western values and European history" in the African schools.

Federal Law Demands More Blacks Be Placed on Juries WASHINGTON—Federal courts across the country are anticipating enactment of a new law next month which requires federal courts to seek more Black and members of other m i n o r i t y groups as jury candidates. The measure was in r e s p o n s e to charges in the Black community that p e r s o n s facing Federal charges were subject to a "legal lynching" in the face of racist all-white juries. It is hoped, according to Federal officials, that the measure will set a precedent for local and municipal courts. The Federal Jury S e l e c t i o n Act, which was passed in Congress last March, requires that jury selection be carried out on a random basis and that daily pay allowances be doubled to $20. THE ACT, which goes into effect Dec. 23, was preceded by the distribution of questionnaires to persons who "will be pooled for"

future juries. Persons may claim exclusion if they are over 70, are p h y s i c i a n s , dentists, school teachers, clergymen, members of the armed, or police forces, firemen, or are mothers with children under 10 years old. Provisions of the act specifically require that juries be selected at random from "a fair crosssection of the community."

Young Miami Muhammad Speaks Courier Sues Over Police Brutality, and Wins MIAMI—Several months ago MUHAMMAD SPEAKS carried the story of Robert Q. Owens, the 17-year-old Afro-American youth who was dangled by his heels from a Miami bridge by two racist policemen. SHORTLY AFTER this incident Owens joined the Nation of Islam and is now Robert 17X. He sued the policemen in U.S. d i s t r i c t court, charging them with violating his civil rights.

Recently, the city was forced to make a $4,500 settlement with Robert 17X. The p o l i c e m e n had pleaded guilty to taking Brother Robert in custody at a pool hall last spring and driving him to the unfinished expressway bridge 75 feet above the Miami River. After dangling him from the bridge they forced Robert 17X to undress and one officer punched him several times in the stomach and chest, then drove away.

Mozambique Guerrillas Hit Portuguese Installations enemy troops at Kavaza village, near the Malawi border, resulted in 13 enemy deaths and more than 40 wounded. Mozambique guerrilla forces engaged colonial troops at Chisson village in the area of Vila Gamito, killing 12 and wounding many others. A few weeks later, freedom f i g h t e r s ambushed Portuguese troops in the chief Domingos area. Two military troop carriers were blown up by land mines and nine soldiers were eliminated on the spot. Guerrilla fighters made a surprise attack on an enemy camp in Sanca Manica e Sofala, and 11 enemy soldiers were killed, four camps were burned down, three Bedford lorries were totally destroyed and a quantity of arms and ammunition captured. Communication equipment in many parts of Tete and Monica e Sofala has been put out of action or completely destroyed. THE C H R I S T M A S shopping boycott was announced recently by Robert L. Lucas, national chairman of BLACKS and former chairman of the Chicago chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality. In a telegram to Lucas, the Rev. Jackson states: " I support your determination to raise crucial issues over the status of Black people in this nation by launching an economic withdrawal campaign at the Christmas season. Nothing will more vividly portray the cruelty of an overcommercialized, debt - ridden Christmas as America's ghettos and it will also underscore the political impotence of Black people who inhabit those ghettos. This action will transform a holiday into a holy season of justice, peace and freedom." The purpose of the boycott, according to Lucas, is: "to sharpen the issue of economic exploitation of Black people by merchants and businessmen within and outside of their communities." DESPITE the death of Bobo, the guerrilla attack resulted in an overwhelming v i c t o r y for COREMO (the Committee for Revolution in Mozambique) fighters, who overran the post, killed or wounded more than 90 Portuguese s o l d i e r s and captured large quantities of weapons and munitions. The ACLU's brief came as a result of a survey of jurors taken from February, 1967 through October, 1968 which showed that Government employees constituted 63 per cent of the jurors, while the poor constituted 1 per cent and persons under 35 made up only 13 per cent of the jurors. ONCE A Black man receives sentence in the District's Courts, he becomes one of nearly 3,000 Black men and women languishing in the department's institutions. Dr. Adams said that he did not believe that an explosive situation has yet developed at the Lorton Reformatory, but he did concede that growing evidence indicating that any sudden increase of the Black population in cities and institutions creates an inflammable s i t u a t i o n , would warrant such a conclusion. At least one of Adams' theories on the increase of Black prisoners rest upon "the heavy

concentration of Blacks, with different ideals and behavior and long latent hostilities," in the ghettos. ADAMS contends that these B l a c k men and women are viewed with suspicion and distrust by the middle class, and apparently "do things which annoy their better off neighbors." Another consequence of this situation is the policeman's reaction to middle class sentiment, resulting more often than not, in quest i o n a b l e arrests of the poor Black man. "It is hoped," Adams said, "that less and less reliance will be placed on prisons and more and more attention given to 'preventive measures.' " In this era of "law and order," and the rising hostility and polarization of Blacks and whites here, "hope," if any, appears somewhat dim. Citizens here, still a long way from home rule, will have to wait upon Congress for any meaningful changes in the present trends. Meanwhile it can be expected

that young Black men will become increasingly subject to arrest for offenses of less and less gravity. And as statistics show, jail and prison climates usually breed the criminal attitude. According to the "Social and Demographic" research report, the young Black man is first committed to prison around the age of 19 and before he is 35 he will have served at least 3 years in the reformatory. Such statistics may come as a shock to all except those who see the penal system as an arm of the "institutionalized racism" in America. FOR THOSE who contend that the rise in the District's Black population accounts for the disproportionate number of Black inmates, a brief review of the " P r e s i d e n t ' s Commission on Crime in the District of Columbia" report, will reveal that when the district's white population was as high as today's Black population (68%), whites made up only 30 per cent of the prison population.

Death Trial in Elizabeth, N.J. To Railroad Black Scapegoats? (Muhammad Speaks N.w York Bur.oul E L I Z A B E T H , N.J.—In his opening remarks to the jury, Raymond S. Londa, asst. state prosecutor, demanded the lives of 11 young Black defendants on trial. They are accused of stomping a white cop to death during the Plainfield rebellion ~on July 16, 1967. ONLY TWO of the 14-member jury panel are Blacks. The defendants include Gail Madden, 21; Harold Brandon, 19; Lawrence Brown, 20; George Casey, 36; James Gary, 29; Donald Jones, 23; Clement Johnson, 24; George Merritt Jr., 24; Wayne Streater, 21; James Toland, 32; and Robert Toy, 29. A 12th defendant, Bruce Jones, 20, had his trial postponed because of an injury to his lawyer.

In a related development, another Black youth was indicted by the Union County grand jury. Bobby W i l l i a m s was charged with inciting to violence and assault with intent to kill the deceased cop. THE TRIAL, "a mass railroading of Black scapegoats to the electric chair" as one Black spectator put it, is before Superior Judge Chester A. Weidenburner. The case to date has been marked by an unusual Saturday session and rigid security measures in which all persons entering the courtroom are frisked except the prosecutors. As the state calls its witnesses it is apparent that it intends to go allout for the execution of the 11 Black defendants.

U.S. Arms Japan at Feverish Rate TOKYO—Despite the frequently recurring anti-U.S. feeling espoused by Japanese students, U.S. arms sellers are busily engaged in rearming the country with as varied and as many American-manufactured weapons and equipment as they can, to beef up the stockpiles of Japan's "self defense forces." LATEST SELECTION made by the Japanese Defense Agency is the McDonnel-Douglas Phantom F-4, a replacement for the Starfighters as the main weapon of the air force. Earlier acquisitions have been Lockhead's F-104 Starfighter, the Nike-J missile system, and the Hawk missile. Competition is keen between international companies—even between American firms. As an example, Lockheed's Starfighter was the chief fighter plane in the Japanese Air Force until McDonnell-Douglas convinced the Japanese Defense agency that the Phantom was a "superplane." T H E ARMS-SELLERS—they don't like to be called that because they are "selling not just weapons but technology that is helping this country's economy" —have problems associated with doing business with Japan. The U.S. government owns design rights on all weapons and equipment, has priority on the firms' output, and c l a s s i f i e s much of the military hardware for security purposes. THE HEARING focused on 16 counties running in a belt from the Georgia State line on the East through M o n t g o m e r y to Mississippi on the West. Cycle to Nowhere was written for the Commission by Paul Good, author and specialist in civil rights reporting. In releasing the publication, H o w a r d A. Glickstein, Acting

?

Staff Director of the Commission, said: "This narrative account of our hearing this Spring in Montgomery shows how the failure of Federal agencies to enforce civil rights legislation has p r e v e n t e d many Negroes from sharing the benefits of economic advancement in the South. As Cycle to Nowhere demonstrates, the economic status of most Negroes in 16 Black Belt counties of Alabama has not changed much since the Commission held a hearing in Montgomery 10 years ago. Testimony at our hearing in 1968 showed that Negroes in those counties still are denied equal opportunity in farm programs, education, employment, and health and welfare simply because they happen to be Black." "PARTICULARLY shocking," continued Glickstein, "was the testimony of representatives of major firms with millions of dollars in Government c o n t r a c t s who indicated that the Government made only haphazard checks on the equal opportunity requirements of those contracts.

A Prisoner's Experience Dear Holy Apostle: I bear witness that your article in the paper recently, dealing with slavery in Alabama and Mississippi, is very much the truth. I visited through Texas (along with a few other states), which was as recently as 1966; and some of the things I have seen and heard that was being done to Black people in those states have proven to be so shocking and terrifying that many people find such truth hard to believe. Take for i n s t a n c e a place called Calvin, Texas. There behind three or four miles of wooded area fenced in by a river at the back is a huge plantation with around 2,000 of our poor Black brothers and sisters and children on it. Signs along the road leading to it reads as such: "private property; keep out; no trespassing; warning, violators may be shot; etc." ON THIS plantation our poor people are living in shacks that are so old and dilapidated that they have to employ the use of long poles, propped up along the front and sides, in order to keep them from falling down. The Black folks on this plantation have never heard or known the use of such things as a television, radio, electric lights, gas stove, refrigerator (or ice box), bath tub, and other necessities of life. Many times, from wind or fires, these shacks fall or burn to the ground—killing some of the occu-

pants in them. Most of these shacks have no w i n d o w s or doors in which to help keep the wild animals and other enemies out, which consist of wild boars, snakes, and vicious bears and other animals. These animals tear off into the Black folk's houses at night to attack and eat anything they can find, and sometimes knock the whole house down in the commotion that results there from. Old and very foul paper or rags line the cracks and holes of the walls and windows to keep the insects and other creatures out. An old-time pot bellied, wood-burning stove is about the only modern appliance they have or know of. There are sometimes as many as two and three fires in a night in these Black peoples' rat-traps, while the slavemaster lives upon a nice sized hill, away from everything, with a large electric fence surrounding his big fancy house. THERE'S AN old run down school shack, "general store" and a place for the Blacks to get drunk on Saturday nights, as well as a small fire house and wagon on this plantation; and our people don't leave this place for any reason. In fact they find it hard to believe such tales as: "They have been declared free from slavery." On this plantation there's about 100 or more lowdown, scurvy, uneducated whites who are given room and board, along with a small salary for

keeping the Blacks enslaved and from running away. The general rule is that only a relative is allowed to visit any of these people. You have to know his name or what they call him around there. Then, one of the whites on the other side of the fence will go and fetch him, as they put it, and ask him, "Bo, ol' thang, you know this nigger? Whose this? This yo' cousin?" "Yez-um, I reggon it tis." The Black c h i l d r e n attend school up to the fourth year, and then they are put out in the fields and worked worst than beasts, along with the other Blacks. THERE'S NO such thing as a jail or hospital, there. If a Black doesn't pick enough cotton, or do enough plowing, etc., for that day, he is taken in front of his wife or husband, mother or father and everyone and given a whipping by the slavemaster in charge of him. If he does something that displeases or offends a white, he is knocked in the head with the butt of the white's gun or may even be killed as a reward of punishment. On the devil's plantation, there are many of our poor Black people walking around d e r a n g e d where they suffer from the effects of the slavemaster knocking them in the head, or even from fighting, killing, or knocking one another in the head for the amusement and pleasure of the slavemaster. H a Black is found with a

Muhammad:

How

to

Live

"What Allah, in the Person of Master Fard Mohammad, to Whom Praises are due forever, Has Revealed to Me." By

Elijah Muhammad Messenger of Allah There are a lot of readers of this article who have many different thoughts and conceptions of this article. THE MAIN ROOT of this article is to stop you from eating two or three times a day which will prolong your life. It takes several hours for the proteins and the vitamins in the meal we eat today to be digested and distributed throughout our bodies. Allah, through the mouths of the Prophets prophesied that when He Comes, He would give us more life — an abundancy of life. The Book does not teach you how He will extend our lives; how He will make our lives worth living; and how we will rejoice in our lives. Now, He (Allah) Has Come and He is teaching me to teach you how to live. How to live is to go after that which is essential for us to put in our body as foods which give life and maintain life in the body. He (Master Fard Muhammad, to Whom Praises are Due forever), Has taught me how to teach you the best way to extend our lives and that is through the right kind of foods and drinks. This does not mean we have to eat every herb of the earth', every cattle of the earth, every bird that flies, every domestic fowl, or every piece of fruit that a fruit tree or vine is bearing (as some people think like that). Just a simple food will keep you and me living a long time, if that simple food is good and we eat it only once a day (once every 24 hours).

MONDAY NIGHT, YOU BUSTED A SOUL. BROTHER ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HIS HEAD. WEDNESDAY, YOU SOCKED OWE ON HIS LEFT. FRIDAY,SPLIT ONE DOWN THE FOREHEAD. AND SATURDAY, YOU CRACKED OWE IN THE REAR—YOU'RE AjVALL Af?OUN0 MAN,CHARLIE.'

Nor am I in a position to measure the total, overall audience response generated by these or other official Muslim propagation e n d e a v o r s noted immediately above. However, I think I can still prove my point (under reference in the present essay) on the basis of Messenger Muhammad's writings set down in another "Nation of Islam" literary enterprise, MUHAMMAD SPEAKS.

True, one is bound to come across an occasional duplication of content in some of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad's writings printed in "Muhammad Speaks." ahowever, it is my opinion that such repetition of material only serves to EMPHASIZE the meaning of his "messages." In closing, may I add here that, since each of the aforemen-

tioned works of Messenger Muhammad also contains a clear and unequivocal WARNING to Black Americans—usually to the e f f e c t that severe DIVINE CHASTISEMENT awaits all who still might ignore or defy Allah's Commandments applicable t o "this time and day of the judgment and separation of nations" —it proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that the Honorable Elijah M u h a m m a d has already well-served the principal purpose and objective of his divinely-ordained mission. I think it should be further clear and manifest to all concerned that the continued existence and survival as well as future growth and prosperity of the "righteous lost-and-found . . . nation in this wilderness" is up to Black Americans themselves.

Actually, not enough cars go through Swan Quarter in one day to even add up to "traffic." But the number of jailed young men and women soon ros^to 130 or so, and the racists were stashing their prisoners in jails of neighboring counties. Then, on Nov. 11, the students decided to take over the school superintendent's offices on the second floor of the courthouse. About 12 of them seized the room, led by a militant crew from Fairfield. (The Klan is very strong in Fairfield, a white CBS cameraman said he and his co-workers were verbally abused and threatened in a restaurant there. But the Fairfield Blacks are the strongest supporters of the school and economic boycott.) MAMIE HARRIS, a pleasantly plump, pretty 18-year-old, described the action: "School Superintendent Buckney came into his office and we asked why he was taking our school. He said they needed to turn it into something else, so we said, 'We're not going to Mattamuskeet.' "He said, 'That's your problem.' Then he told the police, 'Clear my office.' The police said they would throw tear gas in. Then Sgt. Smith (the vilest one) started to close the door. Allen S p e n c e r and Donald White grabbed the door and kept him from closing it. Then they threw a bomb in and Donald threw it out. They threw it back in and it went off. " I had been teargassed before at the welfare office and it just burned my eyes, but this one burned me all over. It was a

throw a red one in and smoke came out of it. We jumped back from the door and the police closed it on us. " I couldn't see the door to get out. I couldn't see anything. "Someone found the window and we all pushed to get out. Seven others had gone out the door but we didn't know it. Allen Spencer and I got out on the air conditioner and people yelled for us to jump. I was afraid to because I couldn't see. I don't remember jumping at all but suddenly I was on the ground. I knew something was wrong b e c a u s e I couldn't get up. Statement of Hyde County People of African Descent The Hyde County people of African descent recognize the Hyde County School Board's attempt to use Black children as guinea pigs to foster white supremacy disguised as integration. BUT WE realize that real integration here means that the 60 per cent strength of the Black community must be represented in the decision-making areas of our community's education. These areas include: 1) make-up of student body 2) curriculum 3) construction 4) faculty 5) administration 6) location Until the minority European American community in Hyde County is prepared to cooperate with us in correcting the flaws of white racism, as documented in the President's Kerner Report, they are not morally or intellectually qualified to exercise any control over our children. The fact of the matter is that the European American community is seeking to perpetuate a slave structure—including the false myth of wise whites controlling ignorant, happy Blacks—at a time when African Americans are awakening to the rightful use of their unified power. We feel that it is no coincidence that this so-called integration plan was concocted at such a time. BUT L I K E our brothers and sisters in the North and other areas of the South, we refuse to sell our children into a revised form of slavery. SHABAZZ DRY CLEANING tLAUNDRY

FAMILY AND FOLLOWERS give the Black Power salute in final demonstration of respect, at the funeral of slain civil rights leader Guido St. Laurent. The late Bostonian was

head of the New England Grass Roots Organization, two members of which were gunned down at the same time as Laurent on November the 13th.

"SHALL WE try here, Mama?" the barefooted Mexican lad of Indian descent seems to say to his equally barefooted mother (carrying his baby sister on her back) as they pause before the entrance to a plush Mexico City hotel. Indians in Mexico, like their counterparts in the U.S., are the most impoverished and oppressed peoples of the Mexican populace.

Strange Drought Descends POLICE STUMBLE over fallen Black demonstrator in order to reach another one after they charged picketers at San F r a n c i s c o State College. Strike by students, faculty, ad-

ministrators and workers was called in support of fired Black Panther instructor, George Mason Murray. Goal is freeing school from racist control.

For Days Over Spain

SPOKESMEN FOR the Afro-American Organization student group at the University of Massachusetts, headed by Robert Henderson, left, gathered for a press conference recently to rescind an ultimatum to university president

John W. Lederle, to disarm all campus police. The students had been granted other concessions which they considered far more valuable to Blacks.

THE WORST drought of the century, causing crop losses up to 75 per cent has brought the Spanish government to the aid of the farmers. Farm worker above is lubricating the parched earth with water hauled on location via a tanker, in much the same fashion as farmers in four other provinces are doing.

Study Shows Unequal Male, Female Ratios Cause British Student Suicides CAMBRIDGE, England—The ratio of male students to female students in British universities has a definite bearing on the number of suicides among male students in British institutions of higher learning.

Honey Cures Ills ISTANBUL, Turkey—A Turkish professor after treatment on 197 patients concluded their illnesses needed no more medication than honey. Honey, which is rich in phosphorous, calcium, iron and vitamins A, B, B l , B2 and B6, can cure at least 17 basic complaints through either internal or external application. The scholar offered solutions for two of man's most common medical complaints, b a c k a c h e and stomach ulcers. For backache, he suggested that 100 grams of liquid honey be mixed with suet or the rendered fat of a sheep's tail and rubbed into the waist. Results are that stress will disappear J O H N & DAVID'S

within three days. Stomach ulcers, which traditionally require expensive medication and controlled diet, merely require eating 8.8 pounds of honey over a one-month period to be cured. _ _

THIS C O N C L U S I O N was drawn in a research pamphlet published recently by two former Cambridge University students. It goes with a companion conclusion that when the ratio of female students to male is lopsided, the female students are more prone to suicide. Authors of the pamphlet—Peter Crosswell, now a postgraduate student at the U n i v e r s i t y of York, and Graham Smith, working with the Roads Research council—based their conclusions on analysis of information collected from 13 universities on suicide rates and student numbers over a 12-year p e r i o d (from 1955-67). According to their findings the suicide rate among male students is lowest when the sex ratio is at an optimum level of 2.5 (2.5 sales to one female). When it increases above that level, male s u i c i d e s increase. Conversely, when the sex ratio goes below that level, female suicides tend to increase.

"Quite simply," the pamphlet concludes, "it would seem that in universities with sex ratios much higher or lower than optimum, ordinary social relations between males and females are adversely affected. "IN UNIVERSITIES with too few female students, it is impossible for balanced group relations to operate between the sexes. "In universities with too many females, the fact that it is still usual for the male to make the first move in personal relationships means that some females will be relatively neglected."

Scientist Says Ocean Floor Key to Earth's Development LOS ANGELES—Deep basins of the oceans are an accurate textbook of the recent geological history of the earth, according to W. A. Nierenberg, director of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, San Diego.

BY "RECENT" Dr. Nierenberg meant within the last 100 m i l l i o n years, the period in which the world as it is today took shape, the continents and oceans gradually having assumed CAMBRIDGE university had their present locations. the highest suicide rate of the Dr. Nierenberg was a speaker universities tested—23 b e t w e e n at the recent Beverly Hilton 1957-67 for a rate of 27.6 per luncheon of the Achievement Reyear per 100,000 population. By contrast, Oxford "is a thriving industrial town with a much greater population than that of Cambridge. It is therefore easier for Oxford university students to mingle with city people, while at Cambridge, clashes between students and local town youths have served to emphasize differences." Oxford is reported to have had fewer male suicides during the period covered, chiefly because of this reason.

Recent progress in off-shore d r i l l i n g and in drilling from ocean-going vessels has made it possible to bring core samples up from greater depths than ever before. Nierenberg is the principal investigator in the deep earth sampling program being studied by Scripps and other marine institutions under a National Science Foundation grant. The cores provide evidence obtainable from millions of years of sedimentation—the run-off from the continental shelves—but they also provide evidence of the drifting apart of the continents, Dr. Nierenberg said. Drilling is being done in several locations in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Islam H a s Done For M e Black Man's Salvation, Protection Lies Within Boundaries of Islam By Brother Ralph 3X Witcher Mosque No. 25 What Islam has done for me can be done for all the so-called Negroes here in the hells of North America. The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad, Messenger of Allah, Who Came in the person of Master Fard Muhammad (to whom be praises forever) has been summoned by Allah to raise us all. I have known of this great man for 10 years. MY FIRST impression of the teachings of the Messenger of Allah was that the solution to our problem (the so-called Negro) was here. But little did I know of what the problem was. It took me eight years of looking high and low to finally elevate myself to the plane of the mentally, spiritually, physically, and factually awakened — the followers of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, Messenger of Allah. Now I know the problems we, as so-called Negroes, face and where to go to find the solution. I also know that the problem can't be solved unless the solution is applied—and the right solution must be selected. For we find many so-called problem solvers in our midst today who can't solve a thing at all. They're just taking up our (valuable) time. I know this from personal experience. THE ONLY way to be saved

and to be protected is to stand within the boundaries of Islam (taught to us by the Messenger of Allah, who came in the person of Master Fard Muhammad, to whom praises are due forever) in this day and time. The problems, ranging from narcotics addiction to immoral acts in which we find ourselves (Black men and women) engulfed all too often, make a p l a y g r o u n d of that which is needed to build a strong, upright, Black, beautiful Nation. The problem or sickness of our middle class and e d u c a t e d (white-educated, out-of-the-knowledge-of-self, so-called Negroes), is known as pride—not pride of self-respect or one's worth to own kind; but a foolish one and a blind one (pride).

whom be praises forever, the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. Let us be proud of unity under one God, one Leader and Teacher. No matter how big one is or how small, we can all be of service to each other (Black men and women) here in America. Come unto your own kind, righteous Muslims of the Nation of Islam. Time is growing short —think on this and do act soon!

?! Whiles Nlio By Andew G. Paschal I am amused, when not saddened, by the way some white people think on the race issue, and the way they think on the race issue is the way they think on everything else. Therein lies the danger, if not indeed, the tragedy. Take several comments heard on radio and TV forums. One white gentleman was very much disturbed because Black people were getting all the attention: too much publicity and too much aid. He thought that white people, some of whom are poor Paschal also, should be given more consideration. Then there was the white man who just could not believe that white people in the South would cheat Black people out of ten dollarswill lynch them but won't cheat them! And finally, the white woman who thought all Black women i m m o r a l because one Black woman had seven or eight babies during a lifetime—immoral, perhaps, because she could not have one baby in a century! These masterpieces of brilliancy could be carried on ad infinitum, but return now to the gentleman who thought Black people were getting too much attention and pleaded for attention for the poor whites. G R A N T E D there are poor white people, nobody has yet conceded that they are poor for the same reason that Black people are poor. Mere poverty is not the sole problem of Black

confront each day of their lives. Because of this vast difference, it is more or less quietly conceded that if a white person does not succeed, he must be trtfling; if he can't feed himself, he is both lazy and stupid. However, this does not fully explain all the attention Black people are getting, which poor whites are not getting and which the white g e n t l e m a n dislikes. Black people have been denied attention for so long that this long denial has created a time- prevailing willingness to g i v e bomb. Self-Help Program Grows in Mississippi (Special to Muhammad Speaks) JACKSON, Mississippi—When the cotton picking m a c h i n e s came to Mississippi, the white landowners were quick to get rid of the Blacks and other poor who had provided the backbone of their economy since the first slave ship set its stolen human cargo on these shores. COUNTLESS THOUSANDS of Black people s u d d e n l y found themselves with no prospect but starvation in a future for which they had not been allowed to prepare. The few jobs available were soon absorbed by poor whites who also found themselves driven from the fields by the machines. Black people had no choice but to turn to their own talents, a hard alternative since they had no money, no land, little education and few resources. But, with the help of former civil rights fighters who had Vemained after the social hipness of the freedom struggle had ceased for white school kids, the Black Mississippians made a start toward economic independence. One of the results of this was the Poor People's Corporation, an extensive cooperative which is attempting to build support for its efforts to free Black people from the blood-sucking white Mississippi job market.

WORKING HARD to build an independent economic future are these Black women who are making Black dolls for the Poor People's Corporation which is struggling to establish purses, dresses and jewelry, children's smocks to calico dresses," the business manager informs. Rand, who is 25, left a $225 per week job with the world's largest helicopter manufacturer to work with the Poor People's Corporation for $25 per week. However, he insists that he is happy with his decision since he feels "we are getting to the root of our people's problem—economics. It is necessary for us to

establish economic self-sufficiency before we can realistically talk terms." Although the corporation's salaries are not likely to make anybody rich (they average between $15 and $45 per week), the project is providing independent incomes for people who before were forced to depend on white need for employment—and for much less money (about $12.50 per week top).

THE POOR PEOPLE'S Corporation now has a dress factory in Canton, Mississippi, a candle factory in West Point and similar production centers throughout the state. In addition, the Freedom House retail outlet in Jackson is becoming an international merchandiser with imports from Africa, Mexico, South America and other places which are still struggling to come up from under the exploiters' domination. D i r e c t i n g the operation is Jesse Morris, a 28-year-old organizer from Wilmington, Delaware, who is u r g i n g Blacks across the nation to purchase holiday gifts from the Poor People of Mississippi rather than from big money d e p a r t m e n t stores which take the money but refuse to give up anything but the most menial positions on their own staffs. Larry Rand, L i b e r t y House business manager from Detroit, echoes Morris' sentiments. He is quick to point out the quality and v a r i e t y of the Liberty House, Poor People's Corporation retail and wholesale outlet, merchandise. The N e w Breed of Black W o m e n Harlem New Breed Series Part V By Joe Walker ( Muhammad Speaks New York

Bureau)

NEW-YORK—On a Saturday or Sunday afternoon or on any evening during the week, Harlemites are apt to see and hear six Black and beautiful women on the street corner. They sing songs like "Whitey's Coming into H a r l e m , " "Join the Fight Against the State" and "By Any Means Necessary." The lyrics are their own and warn against a fantastic uptown land-grab conspiracy. THE YOUNG songstresses are Gaye Todd, Juana Clark, Marlayna Franklin, Shirley Jenkins, G h a n y y a Ajuba and Martia Grahm. They are all members of the Harlem Committee for SelfDefense and do more than sing about their protest. I t is imperative that black w o m e n become not only aware of needless expenditures in their daily routines but also should be aware of the "tricknology" that has been skillfully exercised to strip us bare of our resources to the advantage of our enemies and to the continual heaping of shame upon the so-called N e g r o doorsteps and households of America.

F O R T H E black people, there are no restrainng laws for our protection. As a result, we are continually filling our systems with this devil's "fire w a t e-r" and must continually pay the price. The so-called Negro, as a minority group, is the worse afflicted because of this one beverage more than any other people. First, as long as we go along with this kind of inhibition of our enemies' freedom, we cannot exercise the proper controls over our families and community life.

NOW, L E T T H E women arise in protest. Not two or three from individual families, but the mothers and wives of 22,000,000 so-called Negro households across the American nation in self protection and unite against the hazards wrought by the use and consumption of alcohol. It is a great sin for any black family, which may not be personally afflicted, to resist the responsibilities of working to prevent this venom from rotting the fiber of our entire nation.

They are alcoholic beverages, t o b a c c o (mainly cigarettes) and entertainment. These three h a v e sold many of our people into the hands of the devil. The statistics on the consumption and participation in these three areas are more alarming than the deciphered figures on dope and narcotic addictions, and the alleged high crime rate that has been identified as the blight of the black s e c t o r s of America.

W H I L E T H E white man busied himself cutting us off from his educational institutions, restaurants, neighborhoods, and public transportation facilities and rudimentary privileges of social and economic life in his great society, why did he not a l s o vigorously apply his work in prohibiting the distribution of his alcoholic brews to our community stores and neighborhoods? After tempting us to disorder and transporting t h i s poison with license into our areas — as well as dumping the worse foods in our markets — he then shakes his head at us and asks why we don't clean up our drunken fathers, brothers, relatives and womenfolk. Then, he boldly proclaims to the world in a second breath that the black people don't care about anything except getting drunk on the weekends, after he fills our streets with wine and whiskey bottles.

Black Education Conference (Continued from page 30) apparently be left unresolved is the thrust towards a Black university "within the system" as opposed to "pulling out of the system" and b u i l d i n g from "self-help." A concensus of opinion however did reflect a penchant toward an ultimate "Nation-state" objective. The Keynote speaker for the conference was Stokely Carmichael, who appealed to students to avoid "putting on Afros and then shouting, 'get the nigger Uncle Tom,'" to prove their militancy.

THROUGHOUT the conference there was the strong feeling of sobriety, despite the matter-offact outward e x p r e s s i o n s of many of the students. WASHINGTON—Unemployment for non farm workers in October declined seasonally by 100,000 over the previous month, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics report issued recently. HOWEVER, the overall unemployment rate remained at the September rate of 3.6 per cent. The increase would have been 40,000 greater, said the bureau, had there not been an increase in the number of workers on strike because of an early October work stoppage in the coal industry. F e d e r a l government employment however, declined in October for the fourth s t r a i g h t month.

New Breed Black W o m e n Joins Defense of Harlem (Continued from page 31) poor to get homes. This is not giving new life—they are taking away any hope for a new life. "Look at all the apartments built around here recently," she continued, referring to Esplanade, River Bend and Lenox Terrace. "The average Black person can't afford them." Well, what about jobs? Won't the State Building and the other projected businesses mean more employment for Black people? "When they tell us they offer jobs, we have to ask what kind of jobs, and for whom?" replied Miss Clark. "So far the record reads like this—a white construction firm, which means white construction workers who belong to the lily-white unions. What did we get? The demolition jobs. We always get those jobs. They pay less than half as much! "What next?" she asked. " E x e c u t i v e s , professionals, civil servants, clerks, secretaries and bookkeepers? Who will they be? Whites for the most part, especially in the highest paid jobs. A few crumbs will be thrown our way. A few hand-picked whiteNegroes will get high paying positions." Continuing temporarily as the devil's a d v o c a t e , we asked whether all the new construction would be an inspiration for Harlemites? "Devilish alright," she r e s p o n d e d . "Like the opera house they plan. What the hell do Black people need with an opera house? How are we to be inspired when they force someone else's c u l t u r e , someone else's standard of beauty on us?" If not the State Office Building, then what? Her answer of a high school came as no surprise because the need is there and Central Harlem is the only large community in the city without one. "There's no high school here," r e m a r k e d Miss Clark, "because a decision was made a long time ago that Black kids don't need to go past the ninth grade." The other needs of the community as Juana Clark and HCSD sees them, and most other Harlemites would agree, are decent housing at rent people can afford (over the last 10 years most new buildings have been high-rise luxury apartments and so-called middle-income co-ops), more public health facilities and day care centers. How does Juana Clark and the Harlem Committee for Self-Defense think they can halt construction of the State Building on a site that has been already cleared and the other "landgrab" projects which are far past the drawing board? She replies that "Columbia University has been stopped from building its gym. Although we don't know for how long, the protest was big and vigorous enough to put them in limbo for about a year now. They will have even greater difficulty getting it started again. If enough people put up a vigorous enough row about the State Of-

fice Building and these other s c h e m e s , we can stop them too!" HCSD is not alone in its fight to resist the land-grabbing plot. Harlem's Planning Board No. 10, a group of residents who are supposed to review all projects planned for Harlem, have also criticized the building of the state office. Also, nearly 20,000 Harlemites have signed HCSD petitions to Gov. Rockefeller. Juana Clark impresses you as a fighter but she is also a realist. She admits that a tremendous educational job remains to be done because the majority of Harlemites either are confused or don't know what is going down. Miss Clark, her group and other i n t e r e s t e d and involved Harlem people will hold a Public H e a r i n g on the State Office Building on Tuesday, December 3 at 7:30 P.M. in I.S. 201, 2005 Madison Ave. The Harlem public is invited. "The white land-grabbers in Harlem are like potato chip-eaters," o b s e r v e d Miss Clark. "They get one and they just keep eating them. The 'man' wants to reclaim Harlem and remove us because Harlem is one of the few truly residential areas left in the city; Harlem has more parks, more wide boulevards than any other area of the city and could be the most beautiful section of Manhattan; Harlem is q u i c k l y and easily reached from any business area in Manhattan; and Harlem is a choice piece of land. "We look around at our community and what do we see? Dirty streets, run-down and unliable b u i l d i n g s , deteriorated parks. We know though that these conditions are caused by the government's neglect and discrimination. If we are to organize for political power, for economic power and for our own development as a people, we must not be tricked. We must not be hoodwinked once again by empty words like 'integration' and 'revitalization,' Juana Clark said.

MUHAMMAD SPEAKS

Says State Dept. Agent of African Chaos, not Prophet onial powers. At this point it should be noted that it is much easier for the colonial powers to deal with, to cheat, to defraud, to rob the tribal chief, unfamiliar with Western ways, illiterate, at least in the language of the colonial powers, who could not and cannot read the contract that he has just signed, than it is to deal with an educated, informed A f r i c a n independence minded head of state. Indeed the colonial powers have a vested interest in maintaining the authority of the tribal chiefs. The Times, rather nostalgically, refers to the fact that Sir Mwanawina's grandfather, King Lewanika "had awarded generous mineral rights to the former British South Africa Company, which adniinistered the whole of Southern Rhodesia in the early days. Those grants led to the development of Zambia's high mining industry, making her the world's fourth l a r g e s t copper producer." Now if you read between the lines in this last quotation you will probably find the clue to the "Times posthumous aggrandizement." Of course, Sir Mwanawina's grandfather probably received about a dozen muzzle loading rifles and a couple of tobacco s a c k s of gunpowder. *> * > > )

O b v i o u s l y they had promised him a battleship for "all the copper ore in Southern Rhodesia." a b a t t l e s h i p which, of course, they never intended to deliver. This is hinted in the last paragraph of the Times article. Sir Mwanawina had a "full dress uniform of a Victorian British Admiral of the Fleet, presented to his grandfather who attended the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902." (An outfit which Sir Mwanawina still wore in 1968, at least on special occasions.) The Times article says, "The uniform was Britain's way of placating the old king when it provid impossible to c o m p l y with his request for a battleship with which to fight his enemies." Enemies that Britain probably hatched up against him. Of course it is common knowledge, among the present generation of young Africans, at least it should be, how the colonial powers tricked their fathers and grandfathers out of their home lands, how they had them sign contracts that they could not read, and in many cases, contracts that did not contain the same thing on all copies, or how with just plain brute force they robbed this generation of their inheritance. Tragically, they may know it but they certainly don't act like it.

The super-exploited peasantry of India has rejected the path of parliamentarianism fervently propagated by renegades and revisionists and is marching to battle against imperialism, feudalism and capitalist exploitation." * > > > ; > '

Exploiters Fail to Isolate India from China, says Mag NEW D E L H I — T h e Indian monthly, "Liberation" carried an article warmly praising the victories of the great workers' and peasants' revolution in China. The article said that China "not only has taught us how to make revolution in colonial, semi-colonial and other countries" but has also solved the problem of how to carry on the revolution after the workers and peasants are put into power.

NOVEMBER 29, MM

MUHAMMAD SPEAKS

T h e Messenger of A l l a h Presents

Wi)tfflv&XimP r o g r a m Wjat ttje iHusrttmS Want This is the question asked most frequent, ly by both the whites and the blacks. The answers to this question I shall state as simply as possible. 1. We want freedom. We want a full and complete freedom. 2. We want justice. Equal justice under the law. We want justice applied equally to all, regardless of creed or class or color. 3. We want equality of opportunity. We want equal membership in society with the best in civilized society. 4. We want our people in America whose parents or grandparents were descendants from slaves, to be allowed to establish a separate state or territory of their own—either on this continent or elsewhere. We believe that our former slave masters are obligated to provide such land and that the area must be fertile and minerally rich. We believe that our former slave masters are obligated to maintain and supply our needs in this separate territory for the next 20 to 25 years—until we are able to produce and supply our own needs. Since we cannot get along with them in peace and equality, after giving them 400 years of our sweat and blood and receiving in return some of the worst treatment human beings have ever experienced, we believe our contributions to this land and the suffering forced upon us by white A m e r i c a , justifies our demand for complete separation in a state or territory of our own. 5. We want freedom for a l l Believers of I s l a m now held in federal prisons. We want freedom for a l l black men and women now under death sentence in innumerable prisons in the North as well as the South. We want every black man and woman to have the freedom to accept or reject being separated from the slave master's children and establish a land of their own. We know that the above plan for the solution of the black and white conflict is the best and only answer to the problem between two people.

6. We want an immediate end to the po lice brutality and mob attacks against the socalled Negro throughout the United States^-—_ We believe that the F e d e r a l government should intercede to see that black men and women tried in white courts receive justice in accordance with the laws of the land—or allow us to build a new nation for ourselves, dedicated to justice, freedom and liberty. 7. As long as we are not allowed to establish a state or territory of our own. we demand not only equal justice under the laws of the United States, but equal employment opportunities—NOW! We do not believe that after 400 years of free or nearly free labor, sweat and blood, which has helped A m e r i c a become rich and powerful, that so many thousands of black people should have to subsist on relief, charity or live in poor houses. 8. We want the government of the United States to exempt our people from A L L taxation as long as we are deprived of equal justice under the laws of the land. 9. We want equal education—but separate schools up to 16 for boys and 18 for girls on the condition that the girls be sent to women's colleges and universities. We want a l l black children educated, taught and trained by their own teachers. Under such schooling system we believe we will make a better nation of people. The United States government should provide, free, all necessary text books and equipment, schools and college buildings. The Muslim teachers shall be left free to teach and train their people in the way of righteousness, decency and self respect. 10. We believe that intermarriage or race mixing should be prohibited. We want the religion of I s l a m taught without hinderance or suppression. These are some of the things that we. the Muslims, want for our people in North America.

tjat ttje Jflustftm* Pelieue 1. W E B E L I E V E in the One God Whose proper Name is Allah. 2. W E B E L I E V E in the Holy Qur-an and in the Scriptures of all the Prophets of God. 3. W E B E L I E V E in the truth of the Bible, but we believe that it has been tampered with and must be reinterpreted so that mankind will not be snared by the falsehoods that have been added to it. 4. W E B E L I E V E in Allah's Prophets and the Scriptures they brought to the people. 5. W E B E L I E V E in the resurrection of the dead—not in physical resurrection—but in mental resurrection. We believe that the socalled Negroes are most in need of mental resurrection; therefore, they will be resurrected first.

Furthermore, we believe we are the people of God's choice, as it has been written, that God would choose the rejected and the despised. We can find no other persons fitting this description in these last days more than the so-called Negroes in A m e r i c a . We believe in the resurrection of the righteous. 6. W E B E L I E V E in the judgement; we believe this first judgement will take place as God revealed, in A m e r i c a . . . 7. W E B E L I E V E this is the time in history for the separation of the so-called Negroes and the so-called white A m e r i c a n s . We believe the black man should be freed in name as well as in fact. B y this we mean that he should be freed from the names imposed upon him by h i s former slave masters. Names which identified h i m as being the slave master's slave. We believe that if we are free indeed, we should go in our own people's names—the black peoples of the earth.

The Honorable Elijah Muhammad

8. W E B E L I E V E in justice for a l l , whether in God or not; we believe as others, that we are due equal justice as human beings. We believe in equality—as a nation — of equals. We do not believe that we are equal with our slave masters in the status of "freed slaves." We recognize and respect American citizens as independent peoples and we respect their laws which govern this nation. 9. W E B E L I E V E that the offer of integration is hypocritical and is made by those who are trying to deceive the black peoples into believing that their 400-year-old open enemies of freedom, justice and equality are, all of a sudden, their "friends." Furthermore, we believe that such deception is intended to.prevent black people from realizing that the time in history has arrived for the separation from the whites of this nation. I f the white people are truthful about their professed friendship toward the socalled Negro, they can prove it by dividing up A m e r i c a with their slaves. We do not believe that A m e r i c a will ever be able to furnish enough jobs for her own millions of unemployed, in addition to jobs for the 20.000,000 black people as well. 10. W E B E L I E V E that we who declared ourselves to be righteous Muslims, should not participate in w a r s which take the lives of humans. We do not believe this nation should force us to take part in such w a r s , for we have nothing to gain from it unless A m e r i c a agrees to give us the necessary territory wherein we m a y have something to fight for. 11. W E B E L I E V E our women should be respected and protected as the women of other nationalities are respected and protected. 12. W E B E L I E V E that Allah (God) appeared in the Person of Master W. F a r d Muhammad, July, 1930; the long-awaited "Messiah" of the Christians and the "Mahdi" of the Muslims. We believe further and lastly that Allah is God and besides HIM there is no God and He will bring about a universal government of peace wherein we all can Jive in peace together.
