For example, when, in November, 1969 Daniels' father died, the Marine authorities wouldn't permit him to go home though it is customary to permit Marines to go home on such emergency leaves. But in Daniels' case they told him he didn't have enough money accumulated in back pay to go home. Other forms, according to Dashi, of injustices and harassments meted out to Black marines who refuse to buckle down are: assignment of Black military guards to outside posts during cold winter nights while saving fhe warm, inside posts for white G.I. s. Black G.I.'s are regularly beaten and kicked enroute to the brig, after they have been provoked — often by Black "Toms" to break the rules. mtum According to a Sgt. Greek fascists a n d Portugal By Joe Walker NEW Y O R K — " I f you defend Vietnamese self- determination. If you defend Black self-determination. You must defend Arab self-determination. It is the same struggle!" So read a sign carried by youths in a group of Arabs and North Americans picketing across the street from the Israel Discount Bank on Fifth Ave. and 43rd Street. T H E D A T E was May 15, 1970 — Palestine Solidarity Day. Arriving first and staking their demonstration claim in front of the Israel Discount Bank were members and supporters of the Jewish Defense League, a group that has used stormtroopper tactics against critics of Zionism and Black community control.

Looking straight ahead as if in a fog of dreadful memories, she recalled, "One Sunday in November two patrolmen of the 77th Pet. Ptl. One - hundred and fifty dollars ($150) while in the rear of the shop, and they demanded the same amount each week. She revealed that the following week she saw the P a t r o l m e n and Joseph Robinson going up to the roof top for the "pay - off". The visibly - shaken, young mother informed this reporter that Batman and Robin said that they would pick - up and deliver the dope in the patrol car while on duty. She revealed that "the night of the murders", the cops were to be paid - off at Ralph Avenue and Park Place. "Later that night we heard of the fellows' deaths on the radio news." Muhammad Speaks was i n f o r m e d that the two Patrolmen's story was that they were just playing - along with the two men, in the line of duty with the intentions of making an arrest, when the two Black men turned on them, one with a knife and the other one with a gun. This supposedly happened in the Coney Island area of Brooklyn, where they had gone for a dope pick - up. Mrs. Green said, "At the Kings County Morgue I found that John (her baby's father) was shot eleven times, from the heart up, and his eyes were beaten out of his head. And Joseph was shot eleven times." The men were said to have been shot outside of their car. N E E D

As she stepped out of her luncheonette to see what was going on, she heard one of the cops yell "Get back in there you B — . you are just mad because we killed your xxxx husband. You had better get back in there before the same thing happens to you." By Margary Hassain IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, Master Fard Muhammad, to Whom Praises are due forever: THE WOMAN IN ISLAM forever gives Holy Praises to Allah (God) and thanks Him for His Divine Messenger Muhammad. "STAND UP!" This mighty command is voiced by Messenger Muhammad, in his every word and action to we. the Black People in America.

The command is the Command of Allah, but Muhammad Speaks! THE WOMAN IN ISLAM stands up for Messenger Muhammad, in no uncertain terms and the Black Man who claims THE WOMAN I N ISLAM for his wife must be the Black Man who submits to Allah (God), follows Muhammad, throws off the devil's chains of fear and ignorance, and reclaims his own God Allah, his own religion, Islam, his own rulership of the planet earth and his own Black woman. UNDER the enslaving religion of Christianity, we the Black people here in America

with the students were two instructors, Sister Jacqueline X (left), and Minister James Shabazz (behind Bro. M u h a m m a d ) . Other schools are expected to accept M u h a m m a d Speaks' invitation to visit one of the world's modern newspaper printing facilities. (Photo by Emerson 2 X ) .

were beaten into submission and our spirit broken. The white man deprived us of the spirit of Allah (God), the Strong God, The Mighty One, the Creator, the Supplier, and in its place the devil put his — the spirit of fear, cowardliness, niggardliness and want. Too long have we Black People been in want of every natural need, and we were afraid to stretch forth our hand and receive fulfillment of our desires, from the God Who Has Power Over all things (Allah). The devil desired us to be cowards, complainers and excuse - finders. We wanted pity, not achievement and fulfillment.

MUHAMMAD teaches us that, now our God, Allah, Master Fard Muhammad, The Strong God. The Mighty One Is Come. He Is Come to Win; NOT to lose. He Is Come to make winners of us, not losers. When Job, in the Bible was laid low with all kinds of affliction spiritually weakened and drained of spirit and will by hypocritical friends, God Himself Came to Job (Ch. 38 41) and enumerated His Wisdom, mighty works and Great Power, and man's weakness, ignorance" and imbecility. Allah (God) does not Beg us to believe in and trust Him, He Asks through

Muhammad, "How dare you disbelieve in Me? WE, the Black People, must throw off weakness and cowardice and ignorance of self and recieve the Strong Spirit of Allah (GOD) and STAND UP for Allah (God) and His Messenger. God Demands of us, Job 38:3, "Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me." THE WOMAN IN ISLAM G i v e s a l l P r a i s e s to Allah(God) for His Messenger Muhammad who is raising us out of the dust of civilization and leads us, with the wisdom Of Allah, to STAND UP!

T H E BLACK S L A V E - the so called Negro — but in reality he is the aboriginal Black Man of the heavens and the earth — has been robbed so thoroughly by his white slave - master for the past four centuries, that when the knowledge of self is offered to the Black slave — the knowledge that will dignify him — he does not believe that is his self. He does not believe that he is worthy of being dignified or honored, due to his long stay with his masters, his robbers. TODAY, Allah (God) in the Person of Master Fard Muhammad, to Whom Praises are due forever, Wants to Restore all things to where they originally belonged. As it is written in the Bible the Resurrection of the mentally dead, so - called Negro will cause all people to return to their own people and country. WHITE AMERICA is completely out of her sphere. Europe is the original home of the white man but he was given the wisdom of tricknollegy to do a scientific tricking of the Black people, who actually own the earth, and then take over and rule them and tell them where to live and where not to live. A C T U A L L Y , the white man has no earth — not even one square foot. The earth belongs to the Aboriginal Black Man. The Black Man, being robbed of self, is the victim of any robber. As all foreigners who visit America rob the Black Man, for they see that he is dead to the knowledge of self. Foreigners follow the same robbery that the white slave master follows. The Black Man is a prey, who has no spiritual eyes, no spiritual hearing and no spiritual understanding. Therefore he stands alone in the world as a prey to be victimized by the entire world. This is the American Black Man, the so - called Negro. A L L A H (God) Who Came in the Person of Master Fard Muhammad to Whom Praises are due forever, Has Revealed the knowledge of self to me and He Guides me in the path of self. My Brother and Sister, I want to see that you follow these same steps so that you may live, in peace and happiness, on this earth which belongs to you and to me. TODAY, a new die is set to fashion you into a new fashion for self. It is a Divine Die, and the Fashion is a Divine Fashion. All of our beautiful appearance has been destroyed by our following the

white slave - master. Allah (God) Wants to Make you and me the most beautiful people on earth — out of the nations of the earth. A L L A H (God) Will Cause you to grow into that new growth in the twinkling of an eye and you will live and enjoy what you call teenage youth as long as you live, even if you live to be a thousand years old. There is no decay in that life. A F T E R knowledge of self — it makes you want to be self — knowledge of self makes you want to do for self. Knowledge of self dignifies you in such manner that you do not want to be looked upon, or referred to, as an inferior member in the human family of the earth. W E could do great things for self, although robbed of the knowledge of self, if we could only get away from the ignorancy of self - pride when we have nothing — only a list of begging. Any people who go out for begging can fall victim to anyone or nation, if the plea of begging is granted. I SIT and look, day after day at how the white man uses tricks to destroy you. One of his tricks is that he puts your Black women to work to show the Black woman that he is in favor of her having something whether her husband gets anything or not. The White man destroys the women of any nation, and when the woman is destroyed, the whole nation is destroyed. BUT, you, Black Man, being robbed of this intelligent knowledge and care for your own Black woman, she is taken away from you by the enemy and she is trampled in the mud and filth of their race and then the white man looks at you and laughs. Actually, some of our Black Men need to suffer for allowing their Black women to practice the filth and evil of the white people, right in his face. THIS is a crazy man — one who will let another man, a stranger, strip his Black woman and make her walk out, up and down the street with her dress cut half way up her thigh. She is shameless in public, like an animal — worse than a dog. Nature gives a dog a tail with hair on it and he can tuck his tail between his legs and cover his shame. Of course everyone is made by nature like that, the unsightly parts are put in a place where they can be covered.

f atisfied — one hundred cent) dissatisfied with lite slave - master's ting you. Nevertheless hem, "Let me go to my iter all of the white us, and after all of his knowledge of self, you man to let you have a nstead of a place with

re the knowledge of self yourself. And since you your own Black kind ledge of yourself, you worse than your Black ur hair to grow out like vear garments that do You make yourself to in the jungle of Africa, Direction has been n Almighty God Allah, e right way, then Allah to go into the worse you will know that you ght way and you chose

The Black .en the wrong way is leing spiritually blind self is worse than the reet with a stick in his s physically blind. A al eyes are open and eyes blind is in worse nan who is physically

face to face with the of America. Allah mt of all of the white

people on the face of the earth He Has America number one on His List. He Will Destroy and kill America first because of her almost unimaginable evil done to you and me, America's Black slave. Look at the evil she does to you, now, while she is in trouble. She will never come out of it without being destroyed and yet she has time to turn upon you night and day. Today, America shoots you down and beats you to death as though she will live forever. HOW SOON — America will be destroyed from the face of the earth and forgotten. One calamity after another will invade America. One of the most grievous calamities — a drought — is now approaching America. Behind all of this rain there is a gasping, parching drought waiting for her. The drought will be worse than the rain and the rain storms will be worse than the snow and ice. S E V E R E earthquakes are in store for America. Recently we heard of an earthquake in Peru, killing around fifty thousand people. Do you think that America is immune? There is an earthquake coming to her that will probably kill more than fifty thousand people. It will level every city of the land. T H E Holy Quran teaches us that when you hear the disaster, the judgment, coming from a distant place with its vehemence raging and roaring, then Know that it is coming here. This is now going on, but you are like the wicked children of the day of Noah. They kept eating and drinking, dancing and marrying and giving in marriage as though they were going to live forever. BUT their day came to them when they least expected — taking them away. So it was with Sodom and Gomorrah. So it was with the people of Lot. So it is in the Day of the Son of Man. T H E S E are the Days of Judgment of the Son of Man. I hope that you will take this warning home with you and keep it, for the HOUR O F A M E R I C A HAS ARRIVED.

Your Brother, Elijah Muhammad MESSENGER OF ALLAH, TO

YOU ALL.

How To Eat to Live NOT KNOWING HOW TO EAT TO LIVE has been the trouble with the world, for a long time. The people have tried all kinds of food, and they are still looking for all kinds of food, for long life. REGARDLESS to what kind of food that you may find, and which satisfies your taste, you could kill yourself with that good food if you eat it too regularly and when the body does not need it. EAT once a day, or eat once every other day in order to give the body time to digest the previous meal. The digestive juices of the stomach and the intestine will live longer. The walls of the stomach and the intestine will have time to repair itself. It will give the tissues time to build and strengthen itself after the work of digesting the previous meal, if the meal was twenty four (24), forty - eight (48) or seventy - two (72) hours ago. HOW do you think Methuselah and Noah lived to be more than nine hundred years old? They did not eat three meals a day. For every meal that we eat there is a little poison in that meal. For every meal that we eat there is a little poison stored in the body. And the poison of the previous meal is added to the next meal, and the more poison that is collected, the more powerful effect the poison will have on the body. THE white race, having a limit of time to live on the earth, this makes them, by nature, to do many things that cause death to you and to me, because they know that they will not be on the planet earth except for a short time. For this reason they try to take you and me away with them while we have an unlimited time to live on the earth. EAT ONE MEAL A DAY. Eat good food and pray five (5) times a day to your God and My God (Allah), Who Came in the Person of Master Fard Muhammad, to Whom Praises are due forever and you will be joined with your Black Brother, to live forever, by knowing, HOW TO EAT TO LIVE. Elijah Muhammad, Messenger of Allah

islamic Ubniversit PROFILE AND PURPOSE THE FACT THAT ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY is founded by The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, through the guidance of Allah, holds bright promise for all young black students. The great urgency and need forced upon Messenger Muhammad to build this center is due to the ignorancy and lack of self knowledge of his people and others, that he thinks will go a long way towards better understanding and relations between the Nations of the earth. THIS UNIVERSITY'S IDEAS AND HOPES are to use scholars and scientists of all nationalities. This idea of Messenger Muhammad's of a university of this type is one that all Nations and races would agree with Messenger Muhammad on the necessity of such a center for his people. THE BASE OF THE TEACHING of the University is the knowledge of self and others and self respect and respect for others.

THIS CENTER IS DESIGNED TO house 10.000 (ten thousand) students of girls and boys and middle aged and aged people who want to be educated. It is designed also for a hospital, technology college, and a childrens' hospital and nursery. This would release—says Messenger Muhammad—some of the burdens of the white people's institutions of this kind for our patients. But, Messenger Muhammad believes that the white people should aid him, financially, to build such an institution as he and his people are poor and would not be able to do so; or anyone who has sympathy for us to do something for self, throughout the world; we would accept it.

SOME OF THE COURSES of Messenger Muhammad for the University are as follows: CHRONOLOGIC HISTORY (Of self and others) TECHNOLOGY Construction Engineering Civil Engineering Electrical Engineering Mechanical Engineering ASTRONOMY LANGUAGES So that the students of the University may be able to converse in the language of the people as the colleges, universities, and institutions of other Nations have provided this means of learning other languages so that we can converse with them in their own language. SCIENCE Of the beginning of education of the people of earth. MATHEMATICS The science and origin of mathematics. RELIGION The various origins of religions and why Islam.

MEDICINE Students will be under the most highly learned doctors that the institution can acquire. HEALTH — We must have these such courses, and the study of drugs, as Messenger Muhammad teaches against drugs for our health, that we might learn to live according to the law of nature. For these courses, Messenger Muhammad desires the best doctors obtainable. SUCH COURSES will be able to aid the black man in a better educational understanding between Nation and Nation.

F U R T H E R I D E A S OF M E S S E N G E R MUHAMMAD OF AN EDUCATIONAL CENTER FOR HIS PEOPLE: This University, Educational Center, is being designed, not to disgrace Chicago and its people, but to increase the beauty of Chicago and its people. Messenger Muhammad desires to purchase the last highrise, where many of his people are now lodging, and then build the dropoff to these highrises, that must taper off to taller buildings of this new ground of an Educational Center. THE TALLEST BUILDING, that is his idea to build on this ground, should taper off from the highrises. There will be no building of Messenger Muhammad's that will reach over seven stories. His greatest desire is to buy the last highrise building, of which the estimated cost is not yet known. He has. however, heard that the owners would sell. THIS WILL GIVE THE Islamic People one tall building beside Chicago's highrises, so that the drop-off of taller buildings will be shared by both the University of Islam and the now Chicago highrise building.

MESSENGER MUHAMMAD WANTS TO make such a beautiful site that people coming into the U.S.A., whether by land, sea, or air, would admire it. As you may know. Messenger Muhammad in his dealings now with slums; he erases them and puts beautiful buildings there. He hopes to do this, not only on this site but throughout the southside of Chicago. Messenger Muhammad, according to his ideas given to me, is to make this southside of Chicago a more respectful and civilized area than ever before since the building of Chicago. Naturally, it is understood, that we will follow building codes of the city that are binding upon all builders w ho build in the area of Chicago. THE MONEY TO BE RAISED for this purpose runs beyond $50,000,000.00 (Fifty Million Dollars). And, he is trying, now and hoping with the good promise of financial people of the country, to aid

him in doing this work on this site in Chicago and America, which will give better relations for America and the world.

FARMING-Messenger Muhammad is now trying to contact the best agricultural teachers that he can find, that he may be able to produce the better crops, baring food for people, animals, and foul. One of the greatest programs of Messenger Muhammad is better housing conditions for the Southern Black farmers, which demands quite a bit of money; and to teach the Southern Black People how to respect self and others — to re educate the South, out of ignorance and into a civilized and decent way of life. MESSENGER M U H A M M A D F U R T H E R BELIEVES that America, as wise as she is and as rich as she is, will agree with him after a knowledge of the truth of his plans for a better people, that he needs finance to aid him. This would come back to them plentifully. All students of this University will pay a certain fee that they are able to pay (which we do not put here in w riting because we have not taken a census of the students who can pay and those who cannot pay). But, in this institution, everyone must be able to pay something for their learning. The exact figures will come later for the students' fees. MESSENGER MUHAMMAD IS DEMANDING MILLIONS of dollars that only powerful, rich financial companies and governments could supply. And, the writer hopes that you will supply Messenger Muhammad with his needs. Messenger Muhammad says that no financial backer of his work could ever lose, for God Himself is behind him and certainly will bless the one w ho finances him with tremendous success in this life and the Hereafter as well.

MESSENGER MUHAMMAD NEEDS LOANS of several millions of dollars to finance the city programs of Chicago and other cities wherein Islam is suffering for financial aid and throughout the South where he is trying to purchase farm land to raise food for the Black Man and White, if White needs it. He is also teaching the Black People against laziness and to do something for self instead of begging the White Man.

SO, HE IS SEEKING FINANCIAL HELP and believes that he can pay on this kind of help under reasonable said terms of the financier. TO GIVE MESSENGER MUHAMMAD'S AIMS in a few words; It is to better the condition and relationship of the Black Man here in America.

I THANK YOU for reading the ideas and intentions of Messenger Muhammad for an EDUCATIONAL CENTER - as he has given to me here to convey to you — on this site.

Dear Sirs: Personally speaking, Ralph Featherstone's death is a mighty challenge to Africa. A chance for all Nigerians to demonstrate their love and sympathy to the cause of the Afro-Americans: and indeed it was my joy to see Nigerians turn up in thousands: A demonstration to the AfroAmericans that they are welcome and will be well received here in Nigeria. But it must be pointed out that it is not our brother's deaths, corpses or ashes that we want. It is their living selves. BEHOLD, BUT we are not advocating their total return to Africa as such, otherwise the cause for which they have been fighting will be lost. Nigeria is ready to accept our brother Afro-Americans into our fold. All we need of them is to identify themselves with Africans. However, the struggle originated from America and it deserves to be well fought and won there. For it will be fighting shy to abdicate the land which was built to its present fame by the sweat and the blood of the Blacks. It will be suicidial to suggest on the other hand, that violence is the answer to their cause. - A peaceful mind to live harmoniously in the society with malice toward none—yet brooking no nonsense from any

I asked about another girl, I was told I still did not qualify, because I work every day just about. I was also told that the age I asked for, was the age that the children have big psychological problems, that one parent such as myself could not cope w i t h . I proceeded to ask the intake clerk what should I do. quit my job and get on P u b l i c Assistance? I never got an answer to this question. I was under the impression that they were begging for someone to take these children in and love them and care for them. I feel that I have been given the run-around about this problem. Maybe I am wrong but I thought after reading this article in your paper, I would write to you. I WILL give you some of my background, of which all the agencies involved are aware of. Maybe you can determine if I am stable and secure enough to love another black child just as I do my own.

I am writing you in regards to an article I read in one of your May issues of Muhammad Speaks. This article was pertaining to the adoption and fostering of black children. This was very interesting to me, in that I have been trying to no avail, to adopt or take in a foster child. THERE WERE numerous excuses, such as I could adopt a child, but they would not place a child in a home, unless it was a permanent thing. Then they told me I could not take in a boy of 9 or 10 because these children of this age all have a big psychological problem, and in some cases more than one problem, and it would take two parents to cope with them. Then I was told because of the sex of my child, (a girl) I could not get a boy. Then when

Vietnamese, Lao and Khmer unity (Special to Muhammad Speaks) By Nguyen Minh Vy (Member, delegation of the Government of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam to the Paris Peace Talks) PARIS—In order to cover up its warlike stand and obstinate attitude, the Nixon Aministration has been resorting to utmost cunning and machiavellian maneuvers; from groundless slanders and fabrications against the Government of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam so as to intensify and extend the war, to hypocritical language about peace, goodwill and humanity in the hope of deceiving and placating public opinion. PRESIDENT NIXON claims he will rapidly stop the war in South Viet Nam and bring home U.S. troops, but U.S. Senator William Fulbright himself regards the policy of "Vietnamization" which the Nixon A d m i n i s t r a t i o n is pursuing as only a means to indefinitely prolong and escalate the war. President Nixon declared that the U n i t e d States respected the 1962 Geneva Agreements on Laos and the independence and neutrality of

that country. However, it is clear that for many years now it is the United States which has launched "special war" against the Lao people: and since it took office, the Nixon Administration has unceasingly escalated the war in Laos. In addition to the presence of 12,000 U.S. military personnel and several battalions of Thai mercenaries in Laos, the United States has ordered many American units as well as those of Saigon mercenaries commanded bv U.S. advisers

infringes on the independence, neutrality and sovereignty of Cambodia, extends the war to the whole of Indochina and as such is being condemned by the world, into a gesture of respecting the fundamental national rights of the Khmer people. As in Laos, the Nixon Administration has given itself the right to arrogantly invade Cambodia, and when the Khmer people and the Cambodian Liberation army, under the leadership ot the National United Front of Kampuchea and Samdech Head of State Norodom Sihanouk, exercised their legitimate right to self-defense to fight back — U.S. troops and henchmen, the Nixon Administration also cried out and published slanders on the so-called "aggression by Viet Cong and North Viet Nam against Cambodia" so as to justify its aggression. The U.S. has also used the socalled Asian Conference on Cambodia to justify and serve the U.S. aggression. These U.S. schemes are so overt that they cannot deceive anyone. In its statement of May 17. 1970. the Royal National Union

a n d

K h m e r

u n i t y

s e e n

d e f e a t

Government of Cambodia pointed out: "THE COMPOSITION of the conference shows that it is an undertaking inspired and stooged up by the United States. Four countries are U.S. lackeys in its war against the Indochinese peoples, the remaining is composed of governments closely subordinate to the United States i n p o l i t i c a l and economic fields. "This so-cailed Asian Conference has no other objective than to ratify the Cambodian clique's illegal authority which has been rejected by the Khmer people and condemned by world opinion for its tyrannical, r a c i s t , sanguinary and barbarous methods of government." Meanwhile, the Nixon Administration continues its gross violations of the sovereignty and security of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam. violating the U.S. commitment for the complete and unconditional cessation of its bombardments against North Viet Nam. In short. President Nixon claimed that he sought a

political solution to the Viet Nam war through negotiations, but in Life Magazine, U.S. former Defense Secretary Clark Clifford himself wrote: "by his actions (President Nixon) still seeks to gain the military victory that cannot be won." President Nixon proclaimed that the United States was ready to engage in negotiations and would be conciliatory at the conference table and that the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam and the Republic of South Viet Nam had shown intransigence. However, after 16 months' negotiations in Paris, everyone has clearly seen that the Nixon Administration has persistently clinged to its neocolonialist position in South Viet Nam and that what it seeks at the conference table is the same thing that it has so far trying in vain to gain on the battlefield, a settlement allowing it to prolong the U.S. military occupation and to maintain a U.S. puppet administration in Saigon as an instrument for the implementation of U.S. neocolonialism in South Viet Nam. Should President Nixon blindly pursue a military v i c t o r y , the result w i l l undoubtedly be the reverse of what he expects: the United States would sink deeper in a more expanded war in I n d o c h i n a , many m o r e American youths would be sent to die uselessly and another hundred billion dollars from the American tax-payers would be spent for nothing in the interest of the United States.

INDONESIAN PRESIDENT S u h a r t o s t u n n e d the Nixon Administration recently w h e n he w a s 'uppity' enough to criticize the invasion of Cambodia and call for removal of U.S. and Vietnamese troops from Cambodia. Suharto usually supports U.S. warmongering without dissenting. With him at U.N. are M a d a m e Suharto (center) and their daughter, Aye Aye.

perfidious steps on its part can bring the Vietnamese people to swerve from their just path, neither can it shake the rocklife unity of the Vietnamese, Lao and Khmer peoples in their struggle against the common enemy — the U.S. aggressors, until total victory, to win back and protect their fundamental national rights.

THAT IS the reason why broad sections of American public opinion pointed out that the Nixon Administration failing to end the war in South Viet Nam. escalating the war in Cambodia and extending it to the whole of Indochina is "a political disaster.'' and it makes 'the opposition explode not only on the campuses but within the Nixon cabinet." As far as the Vietnamese p e o p l e and the other Indochinese people are c o n c e r n e d , the iNixon Administration must know that no force, no threat, no | Dine

Chernoff was then appointed as Tyler's attorney. Until April 1970 Chernoff had no knowledge of Tyler's whereabouts. It was learned that in June 1969, C h a r l e s Rogers, superintendent of the j a i l wrote to the U.S. attorney about Tyler and three other men. According to the letter these men were "being held in full restraints, chains cuffs, leg-irons etc, where they have been housed for varying periods of two weeks to two months." The letter claimed that Tyler was "disruptive."' and said that it was "imperative" that he and the others be removed again to St. Elizabeths. That same month Chernoff was asked to appear in court about

the status of Tyler's burgalry case. Upon checking, however, he was told that no Henry R. Tyler was in the system. Strangely, the misdemeanor charges against Tyler were dismissed, and a new bench warrent was issued for Tyler— who a l l the t i m e was languishing in isolation, "poorly fed, and beaten," other sources report. CHERNOFF HAS now filed a m o t i o n to dismiss indictment, charging "gross improprieties." Interviewed by M u h a m m a d Speaks, Chernoff. said "This is what happened to mentally ill people in the dark ages." The case, in itself, is startling—but what is more shocking is that Robert Montilla, deputy director of the D.C. Department, when told about the case, reportedly said, "It's not an unlikely story. This kind of thing could happen." Montilla's response seemed

to suggest that there is nothing unusual about Black men being cast away into jails and mental asylums —without trials— never to be heard from again. What might have been a factor in the "treatment" given Tyler was the fact that he was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer seven years ago. and has been subsequently arrested on disorderly counts. The police and courts may have decided that they should illegally punish Tyler because of his past record. T H E Q U E S T I O N is I t a l i a n v o t e N i x o n - P o p e as

P r o v e exploitation, not overpopulation is source of hunger

World conference says world can feed By Beatrice Johnson (New York Daily World) DRESDEN, East Germany— Six hundred million people are starving in the world, and one billion 600 million more are suffering from malnutrition, due to protein and vitamin deficiency. THIS WAS revealed at the 5th World Congress of Cereal and Bread 1970 which ended its five - day sessions in Dresden last week end. Under the chairmanship of Professor Dr. Triswjatski, of the Soviet Union and vicepresidents, from the U.S.A.. Austria and Australia, the congress had brought together 200 — scientists from 45 countries. Papers were read on all aspects of grain, cereal and bread production in the world. The data presented by the experts proved that although cereal production has risen considerably in the past years it has not kept pace with population increases. But the scientists mantained that if the results of the research in these fields were put into practice everywhere, "even without increasing the amount of cultivated lands, all people on earth could be sufficiently nourished." A number of the papers also showed that the struggle to conquer hunger e n t a i l s fundamental structural and social changes. A few examples: In Brazil, only two per cent of the population own more than 50 per cent of the cultivated acreage. In South Africa, the

U.S. Foreign aid': By Charles Simmons (Second article of a series) Finance companies which get rich off loaning money to poor people in the USA are nice old ladies compared to U.S. government loans to the poor countries. NOT O N L Y DO interest rates alone triple the countries' earnings but also the contract says that the poor country must use US ships for transporting their goods — the highest price ships in the world; use U.S. technicians and pay them out of the loan money; and sometimes supply housing and diplomatic immunity to the technicians. The housing is also paid for out of the loan, and the diplomatic immunity which makes it illegal to arrest or detain the technician, provides excellent cover for CIA agents posing as concerned technicians. The interest rates for these items alone is one billion annually for the U.S. foreign aid program, and one billion for the other monopoly controlled countries. Two other forms of interest which often go along with the development loan package include ''supporting assistance, and budget assistance." The charge for these questionable aids are about $300 million per year — also taken out of the poor countries' loan money, or credit. SUPPORTING ASSISTANCE is currently received by 16 countries including South Viet Nam, " L a o s " and Thailand. I t is administered by the Agency for International Development, and is described by the U.S. government pamphlet for use "to contain inflationary pressures and to

finance police, pacification, resettlement, and selected reconstruction programs." BUDGET SUPPORT for political purposes is another kind of economic assistance explained in the document: " I t helps other governments in crisis situations, such as those that have occurred in the Dominican Republic and the Congo in recent years. It also has enabled the U.S. to give temporary help to

Health crisis By John Ehrenreich (Ph.D., Cellular Biology) NEW Y O R K — The cost of medical care has soared out of sight — up 30 percent in the last four years alone. Routine hospital costs in most cities now run more than $100 a day, and charges as high as $150 a day are not uncommon. No one except the very rich can afford prices such as these, of course, so people have to buy health insurance, from Blue Cross or from private -companies. BUT T H E cost of health insurance is skyrocketing, too. New York City's Blue Cross plan just raised its rates 42 percent, and Blue Cross plans in upstate New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Jersey and several other states have put in for similar raises.

Health care is certainlyexpensive, and getting more so. But if we were getting really good care for all that money, we probably wouldn't complain, and there would be no "health crises." The statistics tell the story: In white America, 20.6 babies per thousand die: in Harlem more than 43 babies per thousand will. Many Blacks think the only word for a medical care system which permits so many more of their children to die is "genocidal." Adults come in for a bad time in the medical statistics too. An American man has a life expectancy at birth 5 years less than a Swede, 1.5 years less than an East German. An American man is twice as likely to die between the ages of 40 and 50 as a Swede. Not too good for a country that spends more money per person on medical care than any other country in the history of the world. Something is very wrong. There are three major parts to the health care system: First, there are what, we call "medical empires" — vast networks of hospitals, medical schools and clinics which in effect control the medical resources of a wide geographic area.

a d e q u a t e

m e d i c a l

For example, in New York City, virtually every health facility in the borough of the Bronx in affiliated to Albert Einstein College of Medicine and its close ally. Montefiore Hospital. City hospitals, private hospitals, state mental hospitals, neighborhood comprehensive care clinics, e x p e r i m e n t a l Office of Economic Opportunity . projects to provide health care in ghetto areas — all are controlled by Einstein Montefiore. This regional network has not led to better, more rational planning. It has perpetuated and strengthened a system of medicine that provides fairly good quality care for upperclass patients and very bad care for the poor. For example, if you live in the Bronx and get a serious, but common disease (say, a heart attack), if you are poor, you go to the city-owned, run-down Lincoln Hospital. Lincoln, though owned by the city, is run by Einstein-Montefiore. If. on the other hand, you are wealthy and have a private d o c t o r who is on the Montefiore or Einstein staff, you get admitted to the advanced, luxurious Einstein or Montefiore Hospital. A FEW POOR patients, to be sure, are admitted to Einstein and Montefiore hospitals — those who have an unusual disease. They can be used for research or for teaching medical students and interns, so they are admitted, and they may get very good care indeed. But they pay by offering their

bodies and their dignity up for research and teaching. Moreover, the poor patient soon learns that the hospital is not orgainzed to meet his needs. It is fragmented into a hundred or more sub-specialty clinics, each one serving the narrow research and teaching interests of a few members of the staff: the patient goes from clinic to clinic: no one looks after his needs as a whole person. The same empire" phenomenon has occurred everywhere - else in the country. In Boston, Harvard

Medical School controls most of the medical resources; in Baltimore it's Johns Hopkins; in Cleveland it's Western Reserve, and in Chicago, the University of Chicago Medical Center and Northwestern Medical School divide up the turf. And everywhere the results are the same: the system works to provide reasonably good, often luxurious care for wealthy, mediocre or bad and always uncomfortable care for the poor and the working man. Continued: Scientists explains why only rich get adequate medical care in crisis health care system is the financing-planning complex. The most important part of this is the multi-billion dollar Blue Cross operation, which provides h o s p i t a l i z a t i o n insurance for some 70 million Americans.

Hospital Supply Co., etc.) which sell hospitals and doctors everything from sheets and towels and bedpans to surgical instruments, x-ray machines and heart - lung machines, had after-tax profits of $400 million.

The third part of the health system is the "medicalindustrial complex." An alliance exists between the providers of health care (doctors, hospitals, medical schools and the like) and the companies that make money from people's sickness (drug companies, hospital supply companies, hospital construction companies, commercial insurance companies, and even companies that provide medical services for profit — profit - making "proprietary" hospitals, chains of nursing homes for old people, laboratories, etc.). health care is one of the biggest businesses around, and one of the fastest - growing. Check any stockbroker — he'll tell you that health stocks are the hottest things on Wall Street.

Proprietary (profit-making) hospitals and nursing homes earned nearly $200 million. ( T h e r e are now e v e n n a t i o n w i d e c h a i n s of proprietary hospitals and nursing homes, such as Hospital Corporation of America and Medicenters of America — owned by Holiday Inns.)

The magnitude of the medical-industrial complex is hard to believe. Let me give a few examples: in 1969, drug companies (Abbott, Upjohn, Merck, etc.) had after-tax profits of about $600 million. Hospital supply companies (Becton-Dickinson, American

The commercial insurance companies and the construction firms which build hospitals made additional millions, and of course, the doctors are the highest paid small businessmen around. OF COURSE THE BANKS are getting in on the act, with loans to hospitals both for building and for operating expenses; the patient at New York's Mt. Sinai Hospital, for example, finds that $3 a day of his hospital bill isn't for HISTORIC! PROPHETIC! A MUST F O R EVERY HOME!

services at all; it's for interest payments to the banks! Not only do all of these concerns make a lot of money from people's bad health, they do it with togetherness. Drug company executives sit on hospital boards or trustees. Doctors own shares in profitmaking hospitals and hospital supply companies. Hospital and medical school professionals moonlight as consultants to hospital supply companies and even sit on their boards of trustees. Even, the so-called "nonprofit" hospitals get in on the fun. All that "non-profit" means is that they don't have to pay out their excess income to stockholders. They also don't have to pay it back to their patients in the form of cheaper rates. Instead, they use it to grow; to buy more fancy (even if unnecessary) equipment, more plush offices, more public relations; to pay staff doctors ever higher salaries; to buy up realestate, tear down poor people's housing, and build new pavilions for private patients.

Widow of lynched Mississippian

puni hed by welfare agency

P l a n t a t i o n life goes on man's family By Nathaniel C. X LOUISE, Miss.—According to those who came to the death scene after Rainey Pool's murder, there was one in the crowd, a Black man, who became incensed over the blood of the dead man. "This is my blood," the Black man alledgedly said to those whites who still remained, "whatever you've done to this man, you've done to me." AS THE BLACK man's rage increased a white man asked a question of the angry man. "What could you have done with six -or- seven men?" The white lawman alledgedly inquired. He did his best, Nevertheless— Rainey Pool is dead. Lynched! Whether he was murdered by "six or seven men" as the lawman suggested or whether it was the "twelve white cowards" as boycott leader Rudy Shields said, Rainey Pool's body lay on the bottom of the Sunflower river three days before lawmen, forced by an angry Black populace, would even drag for him. Mrs. Betty Pool, his widow, "and" the ten children he left behind have moved from the - house by the graveyard where

his body lay. They were forced from this house by white nightriders who would come late at night with the intentions of instilling fear into the distraught widow. " I ' m supose not to sign no kind of papers— and talk to nobody," Mrs. Pool told Muhammad Speaks. She has been told this by Mr. Dillam the white plantation owner. "This is my place," Mrs. Pool says Dillam told her. "you got a iots of little children to raise— we got to play it cool to stay here..." When Rainey Pool was alive, the Pool family received $86 per month in State Aid. Since his death this has been raised to $91 per month. Mrs. Pool says she has been "put into a lot of troublegetting my food stamps," since her husband's murder. Prior to the death of her husband, Mrs. Pool says she paid only $40 per month for food stamps. Since his death, however, the cost has been raised to $50 per month. So the five dollar increase in "aid" is completely wiped out by the ten dollar increase in the cost of food stamps. Which means that Mrs. Pool is receiving actually five dollars less than

she got her food stamps and later had to "go all the way to Belzoni."

The "food stamp lady" objects to the Black boycott against Louise's w h i t e merchants. She alledgedly told Dr. Charles t Harmon Mrs. Pool, "Ain't no use of CHIROPRACTOR having a boycott now, Rainey Headaches, Backaches, Nervousness is dead— it ain't going to do Are Signs ot Serious Ailments jChiropractic Care Can Correct The Cause him no good." 11305 So.
