I t i s d i f f i c u l t f o r m e to a d v i s e m y f o l l o w e r s on t a k i n g p a r t i n t h e c o r r u p t p o l i t i c s of our enemies, who a r e i n c o m p l e t e c o n t r o l of t h e political affairs. There are many b l a c k men and w o m e n who m a k e splendid politicians. T h e y could accomplish considerab l e good i f t h e y — l i k e t h e w h i t e p o l i t i c i a n a n d h i s people—were given proper and equal recognition and justice

for t h e m s e l v e s a n d t h e i r people. I f o u r p o l i t i c i a n s a r e to s e r v e u s , t h e y m u s t h a v e no f e a r of t h e w h i t e m a n w h e n they p l e a d o u r c a s e i n the w h i t e courts before w h i t e judges. T h e s t r o n g e s t p o l i t i c i a n of our k i n d — o r the p e r s o n w h o comes nearest, as far as I k n o w , to g i v i n g u s p o l i t i c a l j u s t i c e i n the w h i t e courts (if he h a d our c o m p l e t e b a c k i n g ) — is C o n g r e s s m a n A d a m Clayton Powell, J r . , t h o u g h h e i s not a M u s l i m . W h e n m e m b e r s of t h e c a m era c r e w a r r i v e d , they found the s t a g e lighted p e r f e c t l y and the s o u n d equipment p r o p e r l y set up. " W e r e f u s e to w o r k , " t h e c a m e r a c r e w said indignantly, " y o u ' v e been using scab l a b o r " a n d w a l k e d out. I t w a s only after strong persuasion by M r . K e n n e t h Marshall, program director of H A R Y O U , t h a t t h e w o r k was done b y t e e n a g e H A R Y O U m e m b e r s of t h e F i l m and Sound Studio, that they returned. A n o t h e r f a c t o r , not o v e r l o o k e d b y t h e p l a n n e r s of H A R Y O U , i s t h a t the b l a c k m a n , d e n i e d a c c e s s to w h i t e culture, has created his own - c t r i t a r e — - h i s o w n s t y l e s of

speech, his own dances, his own m o d e s of d r e s s a n d s t a n c e s . T o H A R Y O U , a l l of t h e s e things, adopted by m a n y of t h e y o u t h s of H a r l e m — the b o p s t e r , t h e h u s t ler, the h i p s t e r — " r e p r e s e n t a k i n d of c o l l e c t i v e poem or c r e a t i o n . S h a y ' s s t u d y of t h e l y n c h mob captured a pattern that N o w I t ' s D o n e D i f f e r e n t l y divided the mob i n t o the l e a d e r s , the l y n c h e r s a n d the spectators. T h e leaders, he found w e r e u s u a l l y m e n of local stature—businessmen, c h u r c h m e n , professional men and o f t e n even women. M a n y w e r e p e t t y politicians a n d i n v a r i a b l y believed that " e v e r y Negro's c r o w n i n g a m b i t i o n i s to r a p e a white woman." Usually, the s h e r i f f or other l a w enforcers are either a m e m b e r of t h i s g r o u p o r " h a v e a n u n d e r s t a n d i n g " w i t h the lynch leaders. T h e s e a r e the p e r s o n s from whose twisted minds a lynching is born. T h e l y n c h mob, S h a y found, a c t u a l l y c o m m i t s the murder.
