W e m a k e no d i s t i n c t i o n s i n His Messenger. We hear and we obey.

I t i s d i f f i c u l t f o r m e to a d v i s e m y f o l l o w e r s on t a k i n g p a r t i n t h e c o r r u p t p o l i t i c s of our enemies, who a r e i n c o m p l e t e c o n t r o l of t h e political affairs.

There are many b l a c k men and w o m e n who m a k e splendid politicians. T h e y could accomplish considerab l e good i f t h e y — l i k e t h e w h i t e p o l i t i c i a n a n d h i s people—were given proper and equal recognition and justice

for t h e m s e l v e s a n d t h e i r people.

I f o u r p o l i t i c i a n s a r e to s e r v e u s , t h e y m u s t h a v e no f e a r of t h e w h i t e m a n w h e n they p l e a d o u r c a s e i n the w h i t e courts before w h i t e judges.

T h e s t r o n g e s t p o l i t i c i a n of our k i n d — o r the p e r s o n w h o comes nearest, as far as I k n o w , to g i v i n g u s p o l i t i c a l j u s t i c e i n the w h i t e courts (if he h a d our c o m p l e t e b a c k i n g ) — is C o n g r e s s m a n A d a m Clayton Powell, J r . , t h o u g h h e i s not a M u s l i m .

Recently a CBS-TV came r a c r e w c a m e to H A R Y O U to t e l e v i s e a c o n t r a c t s i g n i n g between H A R Y O U officials a n d t h e M a y o r of N e w Y o r k .

W h e n m e m b e r s of t h e c a m era c r e w a r r i v e d , they found the s t a g e lighted p e r f e c t l y and the s o u n d equipment p r o p e r l y set up. " W e r e f u s e to w o r k , " t h e c a m e r a c r e w said indignantly, " y o u ' v e been using scab l a b o r " a n d w a l k e d out. I t w a s only after strong persuasion by M r . K e n n e t h Marshall, program director of H A R Y O U , t h a t t h e w o r k was done b y t e e n a g e H A R Y O U m e m b e r s of t h e F i l m and Sound Studio, that they returned.

A n o t h e r f a c t o r , not o v e r l o o k e d b y t h e p l a n n e r s of H A R Y O U , i s t h a t the b l a c k m a n , d e n i e d a c c e s s to w h i t e culture, has created his own - c t r i t a r e — - h i s o w n s t y l e s of

speech, his own dances, his own m o d e s of d r e s s a n d s t a n c e s . T o H A R Y O U , a l l of t h e s e things, adopted by m a n y of t h e y o u t h s of H a r l e m — the b o p s t e r , t h e h u s t ler, the h i p s t e r — " r e p r e s e n t a k i n d of c o l l e c t i v e poem or c r e a t i o n . O n e of t h e i d e a s b e h i n d C a d e t C o r p . i s to s t i m u l a t e and motivate these v i c t i m s to l e a r n h o w to r e a d , b y c a p i t a l i z i n g o n t h e a p p e a l of martial music and rhythm, uniforms, rank, insignia, etc.

No one c a n a d v a n c e u p t h e r a n k s until he first m a s t e r s the m a n u a l , w h i c h i s also a n appropriately graded reader —although dealing w i t h cont e n t r e l e v a n t to t h e C o r p ' s interest.

M a n y people believe that most Negroes were lynched because they were accused of c o m m i t t i n g D i x i e ' s c a r d i nal sin — raping a w h i t e w o m a n . B y no m e a n s i s t h i s true.

W h a t a r e s o m e of t h e i m m e d i a t e c a u s e s of N e g r o lynchings?

O n e s t u d y of l y n c h i n g motivations reveals that in only

m o s t l y the u n d e r p r i v i l e g e d , unemployed, the dispossessed a n d the u n a t t a c h e d . " T h e y h a v e little education, l e s s a m b i t i o n , a n d a r e often recruited i n the poolrooms and taverns.

S h a y ' s s t u d y of t h e l y n c h mob captured a pattern that N o w I t ' s D o n e D i f f e r e n t l y divided the mob i n t o the l e a d e r s , the l y n c h e r s a n d the spectators. T h e leaders, he found w e r e u s u a l l y m e n of local stature—businessmen, c h u r c h m e n , professional men and o f t e n even women.

M a n y w e r e p e t t y politicians a n d i n v a r i a b l y believed that " e v e r y Negro's c r o w n i n g a m b i t i o n i s to r a p e a white woman." Usually, the s h e r i f f or other l a w enforcers are either a m e m b e r of t h i s g r o u p o r " h a v e a n u n d e r s t a n d i n g " w i t h the lynch leaders.

T h e s e a r e the p e r s o n s from whose twisted minds a lynching is born.

T h e l y n c h mob, S h a y found, a c t u a l l y c o m m i t s the murder. Y o u n g men from t h e t e e n s to t h e m i d d l e t w e n ties f o r m the b u l w a r k of this g r o u p . T h e y c h a n t ' b u r n the n i g g e r ' and sing that happy days are here again."

M a n y spectators—in their 3 0 ' s a n d 5 0 ' s — r e a l l y do n o t h a v e a n y heart for w h a t they witness. B u t they a r e rooted to t h e i r t r a c k s b y " a s t r a n g e and morbid enchantment" a w a r e that they are witnessing a sight they w i l l forever t r y to b l o t o u t of t h e i r c o n sciousness.

1. W e w a n t f r e e d o m . W e w a n t a f u l l a n d complete freedom.

2. W e w a n t j u s t i c e . E q u a l j u s t i c e u n d e r the l a w . W e w a n t j u s t i c e a p p l i e d e q u a l l y to a l l , r e g a r d l e s s of c r e e d o r c l a s s o r c o l o r .

3. W e w a n t e q u a l i t y of o p p o r t u n i t y . W e w a n t e q u a l m e m b e r s h i p i n s o c i e t y w i t h the best i n civilized society. « 4. W e w a n t o u r p e o p l e i n A m e r i c a w h o s e parents or grandparents w e r e descendants f r o m s l a v e s , to be a l l o w e d to e s t a b l i s h a s e p a r a t e s t a t e o r t e r r i t o r y of t h e i r o w n — e i t h e r o n this continent or elsewhere. W e believe that o u r f o r m e r s l a v e m a s t e r s a r e o b l i g a t e d to p r o v i d e s u c h l a n d a n d t h a t the a r e a m u s t be f e r tile a n d m i n e r a l l y r i c h . We believe that our f o r m e r s l a v e m a s t e r s a r e o b l i g a t e d to m a i n tain a n d supply our needs i n this s e p a r a t e terr i t o r y f o r the n e x t 20 to 25 y e a r s — u n t i l w e a r e a b l e to p r o d u c e a n d s u p p l y o u r o w n n e e d s .

5. W e Wf n t f r e e d o m f o r a l l B e l i e v e r s c i I s l a m now held in federal prisons. W e w a n t f r e e d o m for a l l b l a c k m e n a n d w o m e n n o w u n der death sentence in innumerable prisons in the N o r t h a s w e l l a s the S o u t h .

W e w a n t e v e r y b l a c k m a n a n d w o m a n to h a v e the f r e e d o m to a c c e p t o r r e j e c t b e i n g s e p a r a t e d f r o m the s l a v e m a s t e r ' s c h i l d r e n a n d e s t a b l i s h a l a n d of t h e i r o w n . c

W e k n o w t h a t the a b o v e p l a n f o r t h e s o l u t i o n of the b l a c k a n d w h i t e c o n f l i c t i s the b e s t a n d o n l y a n s w e r to t h e p r o b l e m b e t w e e n t w o people.

6. W e w a n t a n i m m e d i a t e e n d to t h e pol i c e b r u t a l i t y a n d m o b a t t a c k s a g a i n s t the s o c a l l e d Negro throughout the U n i t e d States.

We believe that the F e d e r a l g o v e r n m e n t s h o u l d i n t e r c e d e to s e e t h a t b l a c k m e n a n d women tried in white courts receive justice in a c c o r d a n c e w i t h the l a w s of the l a n d — o r a l l o w u s to b u i l d a n e w n a t i o n f o r o u r s e l v e s , d e d i c a t e d to j u s t i c e , f r e e d o m a n d l i b e r t y .

7. A s l o n g a s w e a r e not a l l o w e d to e s t a b l i s h a s t a t e o r t e r r i t o r y of o u r o w n , w e dem a n d not o n l y e q u a l j u s t i c e u n d e r the l a w s of the U n i t e d S t a t e s , b u t e q u a l e m p l o y m e n t opportunities—NOW! W e do not b e l i e v e t h a t a f t e r 400 y e a r s of f r e e o r n e a r l y f r e e l a b o r , s w e a t a n d blood, w h i c h has helped A m e r i c a become r i c h and p o w e r f u l , t h a t so m a n y t h o u s a n d s of b l a c k p e o p l e s h o u l d h a v e to s u b s i s t o n r e l i e f , c h a r i t y o r l i v e i n poor h o u s e s .

8. W e w a n t the g o v e r n m e n t of t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s to e x e m p t o u r p e o p l e f r o m A L L t a x a t i o n a s l o n g a s w e a r e d e p r i v e d of e q u a l j u s t i c e u n d e r the l a w s of the l a n d .

9. V* w a n t e q u a l e d u c a t i o n — b u t s e p a r a t e s c h o o l : ; r to 16 f o r b o y s a n d 18 f o r g i r l s on t h e c o n u iioii t h a t t h e g i r l s be s e n t to w o m e n ' s colleges and universities. W e w a n t a l l black children educated, taught and trained by their own teachers.

Under such schooling s y s t e m w e believe w e w i l l m a k e a b e t t e r n a t i o n of p e o p l e . T h e United States government should provide,

free, a l l n e c e s s a r y text books a n d equipment, schools and college buildings. T h e M u s l i m t e a c h e r s s h a l l b e l e f t f r e e to t e a c h a n d t r a i n t h e i r p e o p l e i n t h e w a y of r i g h t e o u s n e s s , decency and self respect.

10. W e b e l i e v e t h a t i n t e r m a r r i a g e o r r a c e m i x i n g s h o u l d b e p r o h i b i t e d . W e w a n t the r e l i g i o n of I s l a m t a u g h t w i t h o u t h i n d e r a n c e o r suppression.

W e b e l i e v e t h a t the soc a l l e d N e g r o e s a r e m o s t in n e e d of m e n t a l r e s u r r e c t i o n ; t h e r e f o r e , t h e y w i l l be r e s u r r e c t ed f i r s t .

F u r t h e r m o r e , w e b e l i e v e w e a r e the peop l e of G o d ' s c h o i c e , a s i t h a s b e e n w r i t t e n , t h a t G o d w o u l d c h o o s e t h e r e j e c t e d a n d the d e s p i s e d . W e c a n f i n d no o t h e r p e r s o n s fitting this description i n these last d a y s m o r e t h a n the s o - c a l l e d N e g r o e s i n A m e r i c a . W e do not b e l i e v e t h a t w e a r e e q u a l w i t h o u r s l a v e m a s t e r s i n the s t a t u s of " f r e e d s l a v e s . " We recognize and respect A m e r i c a n citizens as independent peoples a n d w e respect their l a w s w h i c h govern this nation.

We believe further and lastly that A l l a h is G o d a n d b e s i d e s H I M t h e r e i s no G o d a n d H e w i l l b r i n g a b o u t a u n i v e r s a l g o v e r n m e n t of p e a c e w h e r e i n w e a l l c a n l i v e i n p e a c e together.
