Never before in history has a deserving Black man received such a great honor as that which was bestowed upon our beloved leader and teacher the most Honorable Elijah Muhammad on Friday, March 29,1974.

This day was proclaimed the Honorable Elijah Muhammad Day, by Governor Daniel Walker of Illinois, and Mayor Richard J. Daley of Chicago — we thank both of these great honored men. This day will go down in history as being the first time a Black man ever received such honor.

Messenger Muhammad and his followers thank the City of Chicago for such great honor.

There were more than 1,900 people from all walks of life, who were present at the Conrad Hilton Hotel for a $50 - a - plate dinner sponsored by Brother Muhammad Ali and Brother Eugene H. Dibble, financial consultant to the Muslims: also, 130 Black business and civic leaders.

The proceeds will be used to build a much - needed hospital for our sick and wounded people on the South Side of Chicago.

The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, president of Operation PUSH, presented a very beautiful plaque for Messenger Muhammad to Muhammad Ali. We thank the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Operation PUSH, and the dinner committee for the great honor they bestowed upon our great leader and teacher for His outstanding and great work for the past 43 years to elevate His people.

By Charles 67X Editor CHICAGO — The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, Messenger of Allah — Who, during His 43 years of untiring labor on behalf of uplifting the downtrodden Black man in America, was once only slandered and blasphemed by cheap opponents — was joyously the subject of the highest praise and recognition Friday, March 29, from the Highest Dignitaries in the land.

THE ILLINOIS governor, Chicago's mayor, and the Congressional Black Caucus paid honor and tribute to the Georgia - born Messenger of Allah, sending representatives with proclamations feting His accomplishments — which in 43 years of Divine guidance, have outweighed those achieved in 400 years of conventional leadership.

More than 1,900 attended the $50 per plate dinner, cheering and applauding even the mention of Messenger Muhammad's name.

Squire Lance, special assistant to the governor states,"It gives me great pleasure, on behalf of Illinois Governor Dan Walker, to proclaim this

day, March 29, 1974, as the Honorable Elijah Muhammad Day." ALDERMAN WILSON Frost, president protein of the Chicago City Council, first bore personal testimony of the remarkable accomplishments of Messenger Muhammad, then presented a proclamation which read in part: "Now, THEREFORE, I, Richard J. Daley, mayor of the City of Chicago, do hereby proclaim March 29, 1974 to be HONORABLE ELIJAH MUHAMMAD DAY IN CHICAGO and call upon all citizens to take cognizance of the special events arranged for this time."

Augustus Adair, executive director of the Congressional Blade Caucus explained, "I am here, to represent not only the 16 Black members of the House of Representatives, hut myself," when he declared to the cheering audience, "It is very clear that the Honorable Elijah Muhammad does not need a testimonial; He deserves one."

"IT SHALL BE forever written in the history of this city and state, that March 29, 1974 was the Honorable Elijah Muhammad Day, by declaration at both the state and city level," Illinois State Senator, Cecil A. Partee,

toastmaster for the gala dinner concluded.

The testimonial affair, to raise funds for the Honorable Elijah Muhammad Hospital Fund for the building of a hospital on the South Side of Chicago for all the sick and wounded of the area — was sponsored by a select committee of 130 Black business and civic leaders, and was chaired by Muhammad Ali, former heavyweight champion, Eugene H. Dibble, III, consultant to the Guaranty Bank and Trust Co., and Albert E. Johnson, president of Al Johnson and associates.

SERVING ON the dinner committee, and presenting an award from the entire committee to the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, was the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who said, "Tonight I have been honored by this committee, by being asked to give and award a plaque to the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. A plaque conveying from this committee, our sincere appreciation for the Messenger's leadership: a genuine hero and legend in his own time."

"I'm happy to join the many business and civic leaders of Chicago in congratulating the Honorable Elijah Muhammad here tonight. The hospital which we all support by our presence represents still another solid extension of His national leadership in promoting Black achievement.

"Exchange National Bank of Chicago takes pride in its' business association with the Nation of Islam.

Of course, no bank can lend you its depositors' and stockholders' money to make loans of the heart. Loans must stand the test of credit worthiness.

"The fact is that we do business with the Black Muslims because they are reliable, responsible customers who pay their bills. I well remember the day five years ago when Eugene Dibble introuduced me to the Honorable Elijah Muhammad—when we began discussions about financial arrangements to purchase the Temple on Stony Island Avenue.

"Being a careful banker, I did some checking on my own: I read The Black Muslims In America, a Phd. dissertation by Dr. Eric Lincoln; I also checked with suppliers and contractors. I found that the Black Muslims treat financial obligations with the highest priority-as a matter of pride.

"I believe that the Black Muslims' record should make all banks and financial institutions want to do business with them. I'll be glad to answer their questions; some of these questions are as follows: " 'Don't Muslims favor racial seperation?' Yes, but for positive reasons they want to develop themselves without outside help. " 'But don't the Muslims talk about the white devil?' I tell' em if the shoe fits wear it. But I say to them they are really talking about 300 years of discrimination. " 'Don't Muslims make trouble?'

They sure will if they're attacked.

Then you can be sure they will defend themselves and do it well. The Black Muslims oppose the use of alcohol and narcotics; they are hard-working lawabiding citizens, proud of their accomplishments and proud of their Black heritage; what more can you ask?"

Only to name a few: Governor Neil Hartigan; Aid. Wilson Frost, (34th) r e p r e s e n t i n g Mayor Richard J. Daley; State Senator Charles Chew, DChicago; Irwin France, Model Cities director; Squire Lance, a special assistant to Governor W a l k e r ; and Floyd McKissick, pres. of Soul City.

Every time the speakers mentioned the name of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, those who were there gave a tremendous applause.

The Black National Anthem was sung by Kim Weston—also a musical selection by Dr. Maurice H. Tynes. Dinner music was tempered by Dorothy Donegan, and brothers from M u h a m m a d ' s Temple No. 30—the Shahids.

Let us not forget Mayor Richard Hatcher of Gary, I n d . We r e c e i v e d telegrams from the mayors of Newark, N.J., and Atlanta, Ga.—also from Dick Gregory and many others.

I have never seen the spirit so high among Black people and the love they shared among each other and for the greatest Black man Who ever lived beside Almighty God Allah Who Came in the Person of Master Fard Muhammad to Whom all praises are due.

I shall not forget the beautiful plaque given to Bro. Muhammad Ali for the Messenger from Radio Station WVON. To the Chicago Daily Defender, Chicago Daily News, Chicago SunTimes, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Black X-Press, Chicago Metro News and many other newspapers, radio and television stations: to all of you — we thank you, we thank you, we thank you.

More than 1,900 Honor Messenger Muhammad at dinner

Law read an engraved plaque from the No. 1 rated Black radio station in the country, Chicago's WVON-AM. "Presented to The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, the Leader and Liberator of the Black Nation, for more than four decades of guidance and inspiration for the Black man. Presented by Radio Station WVON." AMONG THE head table guests — which included as one government observer stated, "the most diverse gathering of leaders and individuals in all of Illinois" — was Gary, Ind. Mayor Hichard Hatcher, Illinois Lt. Governor Neil Hartigan, State Sen. Charles Chew, Samuel Cornelius, deputy director of the government office of Minotiry Business Enterprise (OMBE), and Mitchell Ware, deputy superintendent, Chicago Police Department.

Also seated at the head table was Ms. Kim Weston, the vibrant singer who virtually electrified the audience with her stirring rendition of "Lift Every Voice and Sing," the popular poem by James We Id on Johnson, now referred to as the Black National Anthem.

Floyd McKissick, former national director of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), and now president of Soul City, N.C.; Sidney Wilson, Director of Pittsburgh's House of Culture; Clarice Walker of Howard University; Richard Harrison, manager of Dealer Development for General Motors Corp.; Jerrel Jones, publisher of the Milwaukee Courier; Connie Mack Higgins, deputy director of the Small Business Amdinistration (SBA), Washington, D.C. and

erf the courageous and outspoken work erf their Father.

Those relatives erf Messenger Muhammad were also filled with inspiration, seeing the long overdue tribute come to that man, who has been literally the "Father" to an entire nation erf Black adults, who were nothing more than "boys—breath in britches.''

Minister Karriem, the keynote speaker, heralded the great wisdom and historic precedent set by the thousands who had participated in the Testimonial honoring Messenger Muhammad, when he pointed out: "According to history, no Messenger from God has received love, honor and compassion from the people that he taught, while he lived. This that you are putting on today, is a first in history. It is a first since the beginning of the sending of Messengers from God Himself."

The unprecedented occassion was attended by Chicago entertainers and celebrities, including Dorothy Donegan, Curtis Mayfield, Stephen Fetchit, Kid Gavilan, Ramsey Lewis, and Emmet Garner, vice president erf Cur-Tom Records.

Warm congratulations and salutations were also received from those unable to attend, including, Dick Gregory; Atlanta Mayor, Maynard Jackson; Dr. Ralph Abernathy, president erf SCLC; Congress woman Cardiss Collins, D-HL; Dr. Gloria E.A. Toote, Department of HUD; Ms. Gladys Knight and the Pips, entertainers; award winning singer Stevie Wonder; Motown records President, Berry Gordy; Dr. A.L. Thomas, president of the Cork County Physicians Association; Congressman Ralph Metcalfe, D-HL; Newark Mayor Kenneth Gibson; and Vernon Jordan, executive director of the Urban League.

Edward Sexton, from the Department of Commerce, Washington D.C.; were among the many out of town guests who traveled from far and near to attend the dinner, and were at the head table.

The followers of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, whose number is to be found in every city, county, town or village where Blacks reside, were greatly outnumbered, however, on this occassion by the sincere outpouring of Blacks not associated with the Nation erf Islam, who wished to pay tribute to the Muslim accomplishments.

Representatives erf Messenger Muhammad from Temples around the country included Min. Yusuf Shah, Temple No. 2, Chicago; Min. Jeremiah Shabazz, Temple No. 12, Phiiadephia; Min. Nathaniel Muhammad, Temple No. 30, Kansas City Mo.; Min. John Muhammad, Temple No. 26, San Francisco; Min. Kamal Majied, Temple No. 11, Boston; Min. Louis Farrakhan, Temple No. 7, New York; Min. Larry 4X, Temple No. 7D Corona, N.Y.; and they listened to the sincere expressions of praise for Messenger Muhammad, coming not from his registered followers, bnt from those Black people representing every walk erf life, who have been moved by the g r e a t m o n u m e n t of accomplishment and success by this lone man, the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, and his few humble followers.

And some m e m b e r s of Messenger Muhammad's immediate family, including sons of His, one erf His brothers, and several erf His grandsons — family members who for most erf their lives, grew up with the scorn and mocking of the public because of the public misunderstanding

What the Muslims Want This is the question asked most frequently by both the whites and the blacks. The answers to this question I shall
