Mu Lambda is Alpha's eleventh alumni chapter, chartered October 1, 1923, in Washington D.C. The chapter was established, in part, in response to the desire of graduate brothers, many whom were initiated into Beta Chapter at Howard University, to give aid to the undergraduate brothers and continue the work of Alpha. Chartered by 22 distingushed men of Alpha which included Jewel Nathaniel Allison Murray and Jewel Robert Harold Ogle.
CHAPTER LEGACY There has been six members who served as the General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and two whom served as the Eastern Region Vice President. Mu Lambda is equally proud of our current brothers making their mark in the Washington D.C. community and beyond. Our chapter has many entrepreneurs, activists, political leaders, philanthropists, academicians, ministers and so much more. Our diverse brotherhood age range is between the ages of 25 and 98. We all work together to maximize the brotherhood of Alpha by following the Objective, Mission and AIMS of our Fraternity.
FIRST OFFICERS The officers elected at the first meeting were Brother Harold StrattonPresident, Brother John Lowery-Vice President, Brother Victor DalySecretary, Brother Daniel W. EdmondsTreasurer, and Brother Nathaniel Allison Murray (Jewel)-Chaplain. Mu Lambda was thus established and was on its way into history!

HISTORY
MU LAMBDA SIGNIFICANCE As we continue to bask in the momentum of the Centennial Celebrations, I would encourage us to reflect on some of the significant moments that brought us here. Where we are today is the culmination of the perceived failures and successes the chapter has had over the last century. The cultural climate of Washington D.C., in the early 1920’s hardened the chapter’s stance on leveraging professional, political, and economic influence to execute the AIM’s of the fraternity. Throughout the following nine decades, Mu Lambda has survived various stages of Black evolution and revolution that have molded the chapter into what we present to the world today: an indomitable pillar of influence the Washington D.C. community. The Mu Lambda Chapter House has always been a symbol of great pride. However, thisdid not come without its challenges that began with the purchase of a building lot on Georgia Avenue with the intent to construct a magnificent Fraternity house. Chapter Brother Albert Irving Cassell drafted a beautiful rendering of the proposed house, which was framed, and that’s as faras it got. Due to the financial headache, the lot was eventually sold. The second attempt was eventually undertaken in 1925, resulting in the first recorded African American owned frat house. The
home located in the affluent yet restrictive Ledroit Park neighborhood was one of the first significant investments the chapter made in itself. At the time of purchase, the home needed a complete renovation. Brothers Cassell and Julius Gardiner designed a beautiful chapter house, and Brother Gardiner made personal sacrifices to ensure the project's success. This took a significant financial toll on the chapter, which found itself in severe debt, and with the chapter Brothers at the time being young men, they were financially insecure. The financial responsibility was carried by just a few brothers who were eventually bailed out by the Government in a purchase during the war of 1942. Similar experiences were had with the purchase of a modest-sized mansion on New Hampshire Ave in 1951. At its height, the house would be known to host over a thousand people, including dignitaries, community leaders, and government officials. By the 1960’s, interest in the house began to wane, and the financial problems, among others, required the chapter to sell the property in 1965. For the next 33 years, the Chapter would continue to function without an established brick-and-mortar location. In 1998, the current house in the Bloomingdale neighborhood was purchased and renovated. Over 20 years later, the chapter now owns the house located at 2405 Alpha Phi Alpha Way NW, Washington D.C. The 1920’s was characterized by an economic boom and a sharp rise in racial tensions. In 1925, the KKK converged on Washington D.C., with 60,000 members in a show of force. Brother’s like Arnold Donowa continued to contribute to the diaspora by becoming the first Dean of Howard’s newly reorganized College of Dentistry. The 1930’s saw the Great Depression, yet Mu Lambda Charter Members

college during this era and won Chapter of the Year in 1969 at both the Eastern Regional Convention andNational Convention. In the 1970’s, after several Black Power movements were dismantled andthe assassination of key civil rights leaders, the chapter was more vital than ever, celebrating its50-year anniversary with a well-attended opulent gala at the Sheraton Gala in 1973. The chapter would go on to host the Fraternity’s 73 rd National Convention in 1979. The 1980’s and 90’s werepeppered with various wins and losses to the chapter and the fraternity. The crack epidemic andmass incarceration ushered in more obstacles to community empowerment and progress. Inaddition, the last of the living charter members began to enter into the Omega chapter, while at the same time, the legacy of Brother King was celebrated with the ratification of a Holiday in hisname. During a period where DC was considered to be the “murder capital” of the country, the chapter continued its work cultivating decent young men through its Beautillion program and offering scholarship opportunities to underprivileged youth. The chapter would eventually pay off the mortgage of its current chapter house and have the street renamed Alpha Phi Alpha Way.
Written by Bro. Ameer Baker (1- ML-SP22), Chapter Historian) forward to the years ahead. To all my fellow appointed officers. The work continues...
Although this is only a narrowed perspective, the common theme we see over the last century is that it has never been an easy path forward, and the Chapter saw many challenges to its progress. Prevailing despite the extreme social climate of the 20 th century, the Mu Lambda Chapter overcame every impediment, whether it be social, economic, or other. Furthermore, we have remained a prominent institution in Washington D.C., with brothers leading in every facet of business, politics, arts, and culture. Brothers such as Julius Brice, Rudolph Harris, C.C. House, Walter M. Booker, Vincent Orange, Leroy Lowery, Henry Ponder, and Horace Dawson, to name a few, have continued to do the work of the fraternity and break through barriers, serving at the highest levels of the chapter and the fraternity as a whole. With the same momentum, they and many other chapter brothers have made contributions that go well beyond the Washington area. As we move into this next century of excellence, let us remember that the significance of our victories is directly proportionate to the quagmires that confront us, so let usface them with the same veracity as those who paved the way before us. BRO’S KEEPER By Bro. Mikael LaRoche President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Mu Lambda Chapter In the spirit of true fraternity and camaraderie, members of Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, recently demonstrated the essence of brotherhood beyond the formalities of meetings and events. Following the annual M.A.A.C. Tony Cheatham Founders’ Day Breakfast at the Double Tree Conference Center in Annapolis, Maryland, a small but devoted contingent of seven brothers embarked on a meaningful journey. Their destination was the bedside of Brother Kelvin McClinton, a venerable member of Mu Lambda known for his eloquent arguments and steadfast commitment to the principles of Alpha Phi Alpha. Brother McClinton had fallen ill late in the year, and the seven brothers, namely Marcel Desroches, Andre Lucas,
Joseph Gibbs, Lawrence Clark, Karl Bruce, James Heck, and Mikael LaRoche, decided to extend their support for his recovery. The rehabilitation center in Annapolis became a gathering place for love, brotherhood, and prayer as the Mu Lambda brothers visited Brother McClinton. Surrounded by the warmth of fraternity, they aimed to contribute to his comfort and uplift his spirits during the recovery process. This act of solidarity is a powerful reminder of the significance of brotherhood within the fraternity. It transcends the traditional roles and responsibilities, emphasizing the genuine care and concern Alpha brothers have for one another. As the president of Mu Lambda Chapter, I am inspired by the compassion shown by our members and encourage all brothers to engage in the principles of the “Brother’s Keeper” national program. The “Brother’s Keeper” program, integral to our fraternity, goes beyond the duties of senior brothers. In the wake of the pandemic, it is crucial for us to reach out to every brother, ensuring awareness of their physical, mental, and social well-being. Our chapter has made remarkable strides in this regard, and I commend the ongoing effort. MU LAMBDA TORCH 2023

In the words of our fraternity’s motto, “First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All,” let us embody the true spirit of Alpha Phi Alpha in our actions and continue to uplift each other as we move forward. CRACKING THE CODE
OF PROCESSED FOODS Next time you visit the grocery store, take a quick audit of what’s in your cart when you are in line to pay. Notice any boxes, bags, jars, or cans? If so, then chances are that you are about to purchase and ultimately consume a bunch of processed foods. Processed foods refer to any food that’s changed from its natural state. Another way to look at it: any food that you are ready to consume that did not come immediately from a tree, from the ground, or from an animal. The “food” item has been put through a “process”, likely in a plant or factory, merged with multiple ingredients, injected with chemicals, additives, preservatives, and who knows what else, and shipped to a store near you. They are typically sold in boxes, jars, cans, bags, and stamped with a “best used by” date months or years in the future. (The “Best Used By” date is not typically the expiration date. It’s the date upon which the producer of the processed food item estimates that its taste will start to degrade).
We should all be alarmed at the prospect of eating any foods with a shelf life the extends months or years, especially when, in their natural state, the ingredients that comprise the food item spoil after a few weeks. What could the scientists possibly be injecting and mixing into those food items to extend their shelf life from ~2 weeks to ~2 years? The “process” that the manufacturers subject the ingredients to strips out most of the nutritional value from the food items and kills the natural taste and color of the food. Chemicals and flavorings are added/injected which are highly addictive, enticing us to crave those same foods. What’s in your grocery cart (or in your cabinet and refrigerator if you don’t do the shopping in your household), if it turns out that your diet is high in processed foods, consider transitioning to healthier, fresher alternatives. Pick 1 processed item per month to remove from your diet (or at least reduce the frequency for which you consume that item) until you’ve completed the transition. You’ll look better, feel better, have much more energy, and your internal organs will thank Bro. B. Michael Young, Treasurer Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter.

CHRISTMAS LIGHT SAFETY TIPS
Beautiful, glittering Christmas lights make the whole neighborhood look festive and happy. Lighting up your home for the holidays is fun, but it’s important to make sure you do so safely. Stick to these Christmas light safety tips to ensure a safe and happy holiday season for all. Extension Cord Safety Extension cords are often used to allow lights to reach all areas of the home and yard. It’s important to be careful and cautious in their use, however, to avoid fires and tripping hazards. Make sure you use appropriate extension cords for outdoor use. Indoor cords are not designed to withstand the elements and can become damaged, creating a danger. Be sure that you don’t attach too many cords together either, as each attachment point is a potential danger. Buy the right length extension cord rather than connecting multiple cords. Place extension cords carefully so that no one trips on them when approaching your home. Tape them down and keep them out of walkways and driveways. Watch For Wear Check your light strands and cords for any signs of wear each year and discard any that show any fraying or other damage. A damaged cord or wire is a serious fire hazard as well as an electrocution hazard. Look for broken bulbs as well. Be sure everything is in good working order before you set it up for the holiday season to keep your home safe. Caution With Kids and Pets Using Christmas lights around kids and pets requires a little extra caution. Be sure to keep wires and plugs hidden from babies who might be curious. Keep a close eye on babies and young children when they are exploring their colorful new lighted world. If you have a pet who might chew on wires, cover the wires or keep them off the ground as much as possible. In some cases, it might be best to keep the lights outdoors and away from young children and animals.Talk to older children about electrical safety and make sure they don’t try to unplug or plug in the lights on their own. Using a power strip with an on/off switch is a good way to allow kids to be able to turn the lights on and off without the danger of touching an outlet. You can enjoy your Christmas lights safely with a little caution and pre-planning, and so can your entire family and neighbors, too. Simply make sure everything works and is set up safely for a happy holiday filled with bright lights and cheer. Brother Daniel Mushala Editor of the Torch MU LAMBDA TORCH 2023

Health & Wellness| BROs KEEPER HIV/AIDS AWARENESS MONTH HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. It damages your immune system, making it easier for you to get sick. HIV is spread during sex, but condoms can help protect you. HIV stands for “human immunodeficiency virus.” It’s a virus that can only infect humans and leads to the weakening of the immune system. The immune system is the body’s system for fighting disease. When it’s compromised or weakened, a person becomes vulnerable to all kinds of bacteria, viruses, or other agents that cause disease. HIV is an infection that can lead to AIDS. When HIV is left untreated, it can wreak havoc on a person’s immune system. As this happens, the body is less able to fight off infections. AIDS stands for “Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome,” which means the immune system has been made less effective by HIV. When this happens, a person is considered to have an acquired immune deficiency or AIDS. It’s important to note that you cannot have AIDS without being infected with HIV. But people can, and do, live long lives (on treatment) with HIV and never develop AIDS. Once you have HIV, the virus stays in your body for life. There’s no cure for HIV, but medicines can help you stay healthy. HIV medicine lowers or even stops your chances of spreading the virus.

Adopt-A-Block
Keeping our city clean & green Residents, businesses, and the government all play a role in keeping DC clean, safe, and healthy. Only by involving all residents and each community can we create a District as beautiful as we know it can be. Success begins with one neighbor and one community deciding to make a difference. Anyone can participate: individuals, families, churches, businesses, schools and other groups and organizations.
Adopting a block in the District of Columbia has many benefits: •
• •
• •
Improved quality of life in your neighborhood. The appearance of our community contributes to the quality of life we all share. Signs with your group's name letting people know you are committed to making a difference. Meet your neighbors, strengthen your community connections, and build leadership skills. Become a role model to youth. Litter-free, more active communities help discourage rodents and unwanted and illegal activity. Increased economic development. An attractive, clean community is a great asset in attracting new businesses, jobs, and customers.

FEDERAL DONATIONS TO MU LAMBDA Brothers, it is that time of year when we begin to think in the spirit of giving and giving thanks. In that spirit, the Mu Lambda Foundation participates in two key funding programs through which federal and District of Columbia employees can share the gift of the giving. The Combined Federal Campaign - CFC (https://www.opm.gov/combined-federal-campaign) is a resource that allows U.S. government employees to make regular payroll deductions in support of the Mu Lambda Foundation and its charitable and community service programs. The DC One Fund (https://os.dc.gov/page/dc-one-fund-each-one-give-one) provides an opportunity for employees of the District of Columbia to do the same. All donations through these funds are tax deductible and deducted from your paycheck regularly. What could be an easier or better way to support the programs you care about? As open season begins for 2023, you may plan your weekly, biweekly, or monthly contributions to the Mu Lambda Foundation by contributing to charity number 66770 in the CFC, and number 9556 in the DC One Fund. Let’s make 2023 the best year yet for supporting youth and abused women in the DC area. Thank you for your continued support. Bro. Kent Benjamin

A CHRISTMAS SALAD Ingredients
1. 1 cup pecan halves 2. 1/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 3. Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 4. 2 tablespoons honey 5. 5 ounces baby arugula 6. 2 heads frisee, roughly chopped 7. 1/2 head radicchio, thinly sliced 8. 2 navel oranges 9. 2 tablespoons champagne vinegar 10. 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 11. 1/2 cup olive oil 12. 1/2 cup pomegranate seeds 13. 1 ounce feta cheese, crumbled Directions • Line a plate with parchment. Toss the pecans with the pumpkin pie spice, 1/4 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of black pepper in a small bowl. Add the mixture to a small nonstick skillet and heat over medium heat, tossing frequently, until the spices begin to brown and become fragrant, 1 to 2 minutes. Drizzle in 1 tablespoon of the honey and cook, stirring constantly, until the honey begins to caramelize and the pecans are well coated, 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer to the prepared plate, making sure the pecans are in an even layer and not stacked on top of each other. Let cool completely, about 20 minutes. • Meanwhile, place a small bowl that can hold 1 cup of salad dressing in the center of a large platter. Toss the arugula, frisee and radicchio in a large bowl. Spread the lettuce mixture in a circle to resemble a wreath around the bowl on the platter. • Slice both ends off one of the oranges and set the fruit flat-side down on a cutting board. With a paring knife, slice the peel and the pith off in sections, following the shape of the orange. Remove whole segments by cutting towards the center of the orange along a membrane. Then slice along the adjacent membrane to release the segment. Place the segments in a small bowl. Squeeze the juice from the remaining membranes into a medium bowl. • Halve the remaining orange and squeeze the juice into the medium bowl (you should have about 1/3 cup). Whisk in the vinegar, Dijon, remaining 1 tablespoon honey, 1/4 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of black pepper. Whisking constantly, slowly drizzle in the olive oil until emulsified. Pour the dressing into the bowl in the center of the platter. • To serve, scatter the honeyed pecans, orange segments, pomegranate seeds and feta cheese over top of the lettuce wreath.

This combination of vodka, lime juice, and ginger beer is always served in a copper mug. Though they’re an unexpected combination, the mint, berry and ginger all work incredibly well together! The ingredients you’ll need for a Christmas Moscow mule are: • • • • •
Vodka Peppermint schnapps 100% all natural cranberry juice (no sugar added) Ginger beer Simple syrup

Message from the Editor ‘Tis the season to celebrate the bonds that bind us together, and what better way to revel in the holiday spirit than surrounded by the fellowship of our fraternity brothers? As we gather during Christmas and New Year, the air is infused with the unique energy that only camaraderie among brothers can ignite. From spirited gatherings to reminiscing about our shared journey, these moments underscore the strength of our connections forged through solidarity and mutual respect. The holiday season takes on a special meaning when spent with fraternity brothers. It’s about more than festive decorations and seasonal cheer; it’s about the shared laughter, unwavering support, and the enduring friendships that stand the test of time. Whether we’re exchanging gifts, planning charitable initiatives, or simply enjoying each other’s company, these celebrations serve as a reminder of the unwavering bond that unites us as brothers, creating memories that will last a lifetime. BRO. DANIEL MUSHALA EDITOR OF THE TORCH TORCH@MULAMBDA.ORG
May this Christmas and New Year be filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable moments spent celebrating the beautiful bond of brotherhood! Cheers to a joyous holiday season and a fantastic year ahead! Fraternally, Bro. Daniel Mushala

Esprit de Fraternite Brothers, It is that time of year again. The fraternity’s fraternal year runs January 1st to December 31st. Mu Lambda’s 2022-2023 fraternal year runs September 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023. The chapter does not meet during July and August. It is now time to pay your 2022-2023 dues which will cover you from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023. Ways to make payment: 1.
You can pay your dues on mulambda.org by clicking the dues tab at the bottom left of every web page. 2. Bring a check to the chapter meeting. 3. You can pay on the Mu Lambda App 4. Mail it to: Financial Team Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter 2405 First Street, NW Washington, DC 20001
Alpha is a life long commitment An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
