OUR CHAPTER
Mu Lambda is Alpha's eleventh alumni chapter, chartered October 1, 1923, in Washington D.C. The chapter was established, in part, in response to the desire of graduate brothers, many whom were initiated into Beta Chapter at Howard University, to give aid to the undergraduate brothers and continue the work of Alpha. Chartered by 22 distingushed men of Alpha which included Jewel Nathaniel Allison Murray and Jewel Robert Harold Ogle.

The President’s Message
JANUARY 2025 NEW YEAR MESSAGE
A New Year, The begining of a renewed SPIRIT
Our Balance of BROTHERHOOD & BUSINESS remains a prevailing goal of mine as I sit and hand-craft my time as a leader in the chapter. I write this message with the fortunate surroundings of my caribbean heritage, surrounded by the calming waves of the Caribbean sea, and the warmth of the sun on my back. I invest in my balancing energy, dreading the cold of D.C.
Upon arrival to St. Kitts international airport, I crossed paths with 3 different brothers. which reminded me of the importance of growing stronger as a kind, fraternal and approachable man. Through my social media, many have had the opportunity to recognize my very light candor and human side. I retain the ideology that the future of Alpha is nestled in the dynamics of each of our powerful members. We are not a monolith. 2025 we have members from around the world with varied experiences, backgrounds and cultures. We come together under the same flag regularly to achieve similar goals.
The AIMS, MISSION, VISION, NATIONAL PROGRAMS and other precepts remain the engine we drive this vehicle forward with annually - It is our BUSINESS. But we are the fuel, and we often need checks to ensure we are still functioning at premium as a BROTHERHOOD. Annually I find ways to reset and recharge my battery, whether by myself or with family and friends. It keeps my Alpha battery charged.
As we drive Mu Lambda towards its 102nd year of Service in Washington D.C., I continue to praise the brothers who have emplored a healthy balance of brotherhood, and continue to push the business of our chapter into the next century. Last year was successful because of this symbiosis. May we continue to grow, to learn, to encourage, to change the face of Alpha - as THE LEADERS, THE TORCHBEARERS OF ALPHA’S LIGHT.
Brother Mikael E. LaRoche, (10-Mu Lambda-13) President

Vice President’s Message
JANUARY 2025 MESSAGE
Happy 2025, Brothers!
As we kick off a new year, I want to take a moment to reflect on everything we accomplished together in December. It’s reenergizing to see how this chapter consistently comes together to serve and uplift our community. From the DC Child and Family Services Annual Toy Drive to the Mu Lambda Angel Tree Project, our dedication to service has had a meaningful impact on so many lives.
December was not just about service—it also gave us some great fellowship opportunities. Hats off to the Brothers who helped make “Black Ice” another success and ensured the smooth execution of this year’s MAAC Founder’s Day Breakfast. Your efforts continue to uphold the excellence that Alphas are known for.
As we look ahead, I’m excited about our upcoming Mid-Year Executive Committee Retreat, which will be open to all Brothers. This is a perfect chance to get involved, share your ideas, and help shape the direction of our chapter. If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to get active, this is it!
Let’s make 2025 a year of bigger impact, stronger bonds, and even greater achievements. Together, I know we’ll continue to build on Mu Lambda Chapter’s legacy and make a difference in our communities.

Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Mu Lambda Chapter,
Happy New Year! As we step boldly into 2025, let us take a moment to reflect on the incredible work we’ve accomplished over the past year. Your unwavering commitment to service, leadership, and excellence has not only upheld the legacy of our beloved Fraternity but has also left an indelible mark on the communities we serve.

Legacy of Service and Leadership
As we continue traversing our 101st year of service in Washington, D.C., we honor the vision of our Seven Jewels and the countless Brothers who have laid the foundation for Mu Lambda’s enduring legacy. From community service initiatives that uplift families and youth to advocacy and fellowship events that inspire unity and purpose, this chapter embodies what it means to be servants of all, transcending all.
Your dedication has propelled us forward, strengthening the bond of brotherhood while making a tangible difference in our city. Whether it was through mentorship, education, community outreach, or leadership, you have carried the torch of Alpha Phi Alpha with pride and purpose.
The Call to Leadership
As Alpha men, our charge remains clear: To lead the way. This new year presents us with fresh opportunities to deepen our impact, embody
the aims of the Fraternity, and groom ourselves as the pillars of leadership in our communities.
Let us recommit to living out the mission and vision of Alpha, pursuing scholarship, manly deeds, and love for all mankind. This means not only excelling individually but also uplifting others, mentoring the next generation, and standing as beacons of hope and progress.
Onward and Upward

• Embrace our roles as leaders: At work, in the community, and within our Fraternity, let us exemplify excellence.
As we press forward, I am filled with gratitude and optimism. Thank you for your hard work, perseverance, and dedication to the ideals of Alpha Phi Alpha. Let’s continue to set the standard for service and leadership in the District of Columbia and beyond.
May 2025 bring prosperity, growth, and unity for you and your families. Together, we will build upon our storied legacy and ensure that Mu Lambda remains a shining example of Alpha excellence for generations to come.Fraternally,

On behalf of the leadership team, I extend heartfelt thanks to each of you who joined us for the Annual M.A.A.C. PROMOTION TO MAJOR DOTSON
Celebrating Brother Johnny Dotson’s Promotion to Major
, Brothers of Mu Lambda,
It is with immense pride and heartfelt congratulations that we celebrate the promotion of Brother Johnny Dotson from Captain to Major in the United States Army. This significant achievement reflects his dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to service. Brother Dotson’s journey and success serve as an inspiration to all of us.
Having joined Mu Lambda three years ago, Brother Dotson quickly became an invaluable member of our chapter, contributing to our mission and embodying the values of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. His promotion ceremony, held at Fort Meade, was graced by the presence of retired soldiers and fellow Brothers Samuel Armstrong and Swain Riley, as well as many of his family and friends who joined via Zoom to witness this milestone.
As we celebrate Brother Dotson’s rise in rank, we also hold him in our prayers during this bittersweet moment. The recent passing of his beloved mother, who had the opportunity to see her son’s promotion before her transition, reminds us of the joys and challenges that life often intertwines. We extend our deepest condolences to Brother Dotson and his family during this time of loss, and we stand by him in support and solidarity.
Let us continue to honor our bond as Brothers, celebrating each other’s achievements and providing strength in moments of difficulty. Brother Dotson’s accomplishment and resilience remind us of the power of community, perseverance, and the enduring strength of Alpha Phi Alpha.
Congratulations, Major Dotson! We are proud of you and grateful for your contributions to Mu Lambda and beyond.

MU LAMBDA IS SERVICE
Spreading Holiday Cheer: Mu Lambda’s Impact on the District this Season
As we embrace the holiday season, we hope this message finds you in excellent health and high spirits. The holidays are a time for togetherness, reflection, and giving, and the Brothers of the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. have embodied these values by making a significant impact across the District of Columbia this year.
Angel Tree Project: A Commitment to Ward 8 Families
This holiday season, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Brothers who stepped up to sponsor the 2024 Mu Lambda Angel Tree Project. Special recognition goes to Brothers Marcus Spells, Swain Riley, Anthony Goliday, Rakeem Mosey, Michael Brown, Theodore Darlington, Stanley Smith,
Through their generosity and support, the chapter delivered holiday presents to 15 families of DC Public School students in grades 6–12. These families, from Ballou High School, Hart Middle School, and Kramer Middle School—part of our Henry Arthur Callis Academy—experienced the joy of the season through the tangible expression of our chapter’s commitment to serve.
We are deeply thankful for the educators who spearheaded this initiative: Brothers Sean Perkins, DeMarcus McMillan, and James Israel. Their tireless efforts connected the chapter to these families and ensured the success of our outreach.
By supporting families in Ward 8, Mu Lambda is reaffirming its dedication to serving all communities within the District.
Supporting College Students: Care Packages with a Purpose
In addition to the Angel Tree Project, the chapter extended its support to college students affiliated with the District of Columbia Child and Family Services Agency
(DC CFSA). Thanks to the generosity of Mu Lambda Brothers, we provided 25 care packages to these young adults, offering them a reminder that they are not alone during this season of giving.
The True Spirit of the Season
From middle schoolers in Ward 8 to college students in need of support, the Mu Lambda Chapter continues to exemplify the Fraternity’s mission of service and advocacy. The commitment and compassion demonstrated by our Brothers have illuminated this holiday season, spreading joy and making a tangible difference in the lives of many.
As we look ahead to the new year, we invite all Brothers to carry this spirit of giving into 2025. Let’s continue to show up for our communities and serve with distinction.

FOUNDERS’ DAY 2024 BLACK ICE & PINK ICE RECAP
The Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., in partnership with Omicron Lambda Alpha (OLA) and Omicron Eta Lambda (OHL) Chapters, hosted the 11th Annual Founders’ Day Party at Citizens and Culture in Silver Spring, Maryland. The event was nothing short of a resounding success, packed from wall to wall with guests and Brothers from the greater Washington, D.C., area, all celebrating the legacy and mission of Alpha Phi Alpha.
This unforgettable evening brought together members of the Phirst Pham and the community for an energetic and vibrant celebration. The collaborative efforts of the three chapters ensured a seamless and enjoyable experience, showcasing the spirit of Brotherhood and unity that defines Alpha Phi Alpha.
The celebration continued as the chapters partnered again on a chilly Wednesday
night to host the Phirst Pham’s Pink Ice, further highlighting the power of collaboration within the Alpha community. These joint efforts reflect a growing commitment to creating meaningful and enjoyable social experiences that strengthen bonds among Brothers, sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the wider community.
Such partnerships not only amplify the impact of individual chapters but also serve as a testament to the collective strength of Alpha leadership in the region. The success of these events would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of Brothers from all three chapters, whose efforts to craft memorable experiences have set a standard for excellence in the area.
As we reflect on the success of the Founders’ Day Party and Pink Ice, we look forward to continuing this tradition of partnership and collaboration. Together, we will carry the torch of leadership, service, and fellowship, building stronger connections and fostering a sense of unity across the D.C. metro area.
Here’s to many more successful collaborations in the years to come!

TECHNOLOGY
providing IT and Cybersecurity tidbits for your personal use
VPNS & ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE
“…the overarching goal in password security is the same as running from a bear, for your best result, try to outrun the guy next to you, because the bear is coming….” (Brother Marcus Spells)
ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE
identifies and blocks many viruses before they can infect your computer. It actively scans your computer for and removes malicious software a.k.a. “Malware”. This prevention aids in reducing damage to your personal system and protection of your personal data.
Anti-virus software looks for the signatures or patterns of known malware. Anti-virus vendors find new and updated malware signatures daily and apply the latest updates to your installed software service. Scans on your system can be performed manually or automatically at periodic intervals. Files, directories, media and downloads are typically part of the scope of the scan.
VPN:
(Virtual Private Network) is another layer of security. It encrypts data and masks your IP address, which can help protect your identity, browsing history, and location. This can help in reducing the tracking of your online activity and the sharing information of your information with third parties. The main benefit of a VPN is protecting your data when connecting to public Wi-Fi or other unfamiliar networks, i.e., a coffee shop or hotel.
When you activate a VPN, your device creates an encrypted connection (often referred to as a “tunnel”) that connects to a remote server operated by the VPN. All your public internet traffic, “to and fro”, is routed through this tunnel to the server, and back to your computer. No VPN provides total anonymity, but it can help improve the strength of your overall online privacy.
Typically, purchase of anti-virus software and VPN is offered under one security product-service. These service packages usually offer a monthly and annual rate for use. Which product offering to use may depend on recommendations, prior experience, pricing and/or features. (These products are also available for cellphones use.)
The PLUS FRAMEWORK
A Blueprint for Thriving in the Modern Business World
BRO. DAVID EDGERTON II
As brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., we are committed to excellence in leadership, scholarship, and service. In today’s fast-paced business environment, the rules of success have changed. The traditional playbook—built on steady growth and incremental improvements— is no longer sufficient. To stay ahead, we must embrace a new way of thinking, one that prioritizes agility, efficiency, and strategic impact. Enter the PLUS framework, a method I developed to help leaders and entrepreneurs navigate this new reality. PLUS stands for Producing versus Consuming, Learning to Use Leverage, Urgency for Execution, and Speed as the New Currency. Each element addresses a critical aspect of modern business success, and together, they form a powerful strategy for achieving extraordinary results.
Producing versus Consuming
The first pillar of the PLUS framework is a mindset shift: prioritizing production over consumption. In the digital age, we’re constantly bombarded with information— social media updates, news alerts, and endless streams of content. While staying informed is important, there’s a fine line between gathering insights and drowning in information overload.
To achieve meaningful progress, we must focus on creating value. This could mean developing a new product, writing an article, designing a marketing campaign, or mentoring your team. The key is to channel your energy into activities that generate
impact rather than passively consuming others’ work. Remember, the producers of the world—the innovators, thought leaders, and creators—are the ones who shape the future.
Ask yourself daily: “Am I producing something valuable today, or am I merely consuming?” This simple question can help recalibrate your focus and drive you toward meaningful accomplishments.
Learning to Use Leverage
Leverage is one of the most powerful tools in a professional’s arsenal, yet it is often underutilized. In business, leverage means multiplying your efforts through resources like technology, delegation, partnerships, and capital. The right leverage allows you to achieve more with less effort, maximizing your impact and efficiency.
Consider this: A single email campaign can reach thousands, even millions, of potential customers. A well-trained team can execute your vision while you focus on strategy. A smart investment can yield exponential returns. These are all examples of leverage in action.
Learning to use leverage starts with identifying areas in your business or career where you’re doing too much on your own. What tasks can be automated, outsourced, or amplified through collaboration? By leveraging tools, people, and systems effectively, you free up your time and energy to focus on what truly matters.
Urgency for Execution
One of the biggest barriers to success is procrastination. We all have great ideas, but ideas without execution are nothing more than daydreams. The PLUS framework emphasizes urgency—the discipline to act swiftly and decisively.
This doesn’t mean rushing through
tasks without thought. Rather, it’s about cultivating a bias for action. Break projects into manageable steps and tackle them with purpose. Set deadlines, hold yourself accountable, and avoid the trap of perfectionism. Remember, done is often better than perfect.
Operating with urgency also sends a powerful message to your team, clients, and stakeholders: you are serious about achieving results. This creates momentum and builds trust, both of which are essential for long-term success.
Speed as the New Currency
In a world that values agility, speed has become a critical competitive advantage. Whether you’re launching a new product, responding to market changes, or capitalizing on an opportunity, the ability to act quickly can make or break your success.
However, speed doesn’t mean cutting corners. It’s about streamlining processes, making decisions with confidence, and eliminating unnecessary delays. It’s also about maintaining adaptability—being ready to pivot when circumstances change. Businesses that can combine speed with strategic thinking are the ones that thrive in today’s environment.
To make speed work for you, consider implementing tools and practices that enhance efficiency. Agile project management, real-time data analytics, and rapid prototyping are just a few examples. The goal is to stay ahead of the curve by moving faster without sacrificing quality.
Why the PLUS Framework Matters
As men of distinction and leaders in our communities, the PLUS framework isn’t just a collection of concepts—it’s a mindset and a strategy for achieving sustained success in a rapidly changing world. By focusing on producing rather than consuming, leveraging resources, acting
with urgency, and prioritizing speed, we can position ourselves and those we serve for unparalleled growth and impact.
This framework is especially powerful for leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals navigating competitive industries. It provides a clear roadmap for maximizing productivity and achieving results without burning out. But like any strategy, its effectiveness depends on consistent application. The question is: Are you ready to embrace it?
Call-to-Action: Adopt the PLUS Framework Today
Success in the modern business world requires more than hard work; it demands a smart, strategic approach. The PLUS framework offers exactly that. I challenge you, my Alpha brothers, to take the first step today. Assess where you stand in each of the four pillars and identify one actionable change you can implement this week. Start small but stay consistent, and watch as these principles transform your mindset, your work, and your results.
As Alpha men, we are leaders by design. Let’s lead by example and show the world the power of producing, leveraging, executing with urgency, and embracing speed. Together, we can shape the future— one strategic action at a time.

Every home should have an emergency kit. Whether it’s an actual emergency, inclement weather, a power outage or other unforeseen occurrence, it’s important to expect the unexpected. Therefore, it’s a good idea to prepare a three-day home emergency kit that includes the following elements:
Bottled Water
Experts recommend drinking 6-8 glasses (8 oz.) of water every day, which is why having bottled water in your home emergency kit is essential. Not only is water necessary for good health, it’s also necessary for survival. You should keep enough bottled water for everyone in your family to drink for several days.
Canned Foods
Without electricity or running water, you cannot cook using traditional methods. Therefore, ready-to-eat canned foods are a must. Vienna sausages, Spam, canned fruit, ham, tuna and other similar foods that do not require preparation are ideal for a home emergency kit. Because most canned foods have a lengthy expiration date, you can keep them on hand for some time. And don’t forget a non-electric can opener!
Medication
Whether it’s common everyday allergies, a serious medical condition or a reaction to a bee sting, it’s important to keep your homes emergency kit equipped with the medication necessary to treat sudden ailments.
Cellular Phone
What would happen in the midst of a winter
storm if the electricity was lost and the phone was out? How could you call the power or phone company to get the service restored? In an emergency situation, how could you contact anyone? If you have a cellular phone and live in an area where there is a strong signal for using the phone, you can use it in an emergency. In some cases, this may be your only link to the outside world, especially if you live in a rural area.
Flashlight & Batteries
Without electricity, the nights are dark. This means that you will need a supply of flashlights and batteries. If you need additional light, you should also consider purchasing a supply of candles for your home emergency kit.
Radio & Batteries
In an emergency, a battery-powered radio can serve as your link to what is happening around you. It not only informs you of the weather, but also of the latest news for your area. You can also learn of road conditions, which will help you to decide whether or not travel is a good idea.
Now that you know what to include in your three-day home emergency kit, it is important to know where to keep it. Because it should be easily accessible, you will want to keep it in an area that is easy to reach. The kitchen is one likely location but, if in doubt, it may be a good idea to create several emergency kits and place them throughout the home for easy retrieval. Always keep a flashlight near your bed in case you lose power during the night.
Be sure to check your emergency kit on a regular basis to test batteries and update any supplies that have passed their expiration dates.

FEDERAL DONATIONS TO MU LAMBDA
Brothers, it is that time of year when we begin to think in the spirit of giving and giving thanks. In that spirit, the Mu Lambda Foundation participates in two key funding programs through which federal and District of Columbia employees can share the gift of the giving.
The Combined Federal Campaign - CFC (https://www.opm.gov/combined-federal-campaign) is a resource that allows U.S. government employees to make regular payroll deductions in support of the Mu Lambda Foundation and its charitable and community service programs.
The DC One Fund (https://os.dc.gov/page/dc-one-fund-each-one-give-one) provides an opportunity for employees of the District of Columbia to do the same. All donations through these funds are tax deductible and deducted from your paycheck regularly. What could be an easier or better way to support the programs you care about?
As open season begins for 2023, you may plan your weekly, biweekly, or monthly contributions to the Mu Lambda Foundation by contributing to charity number 66770 in the CFC, and number 9556 in the DC One Fund.
Let’s make 2023 the best year yet for supporting youth and abused women in the DC area. Thank you for your continued support.

KAHLÚACARAMEL SPIKED EGGNOG
Eggnog is essential during the holidays. It’s creamy and oh-so-delicious and because there are so many options available, including nondairy options, everyone can enjoy this drink. We added coffee liqueur and a drizzle of caramel to give this drink extra oomph! To garnish this creamy cocktail, you could use a microplane to grate coffee beans on top.
• Caramel sauce
• 1 cup eggnog
• 1.5 oz. Kahlúa
• Ice
Add eggnog and Kahlúa to a shaker with ice and shake until frosty. Drizzle the sides of a cocktail glass with caramel; pour in the eggnog and Kahlúa mixture. Top with grated coffee beans, if desired.

Mu Lambda Chapter 2405 First Street, NW Washington, DC 20001
Alpha is a life long commitment
An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served.
A member’s duties should be:
1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life.
2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course.
3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein.
4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
