Mu Lambda is Alpha's eleventh alumni chapter, chartered October 1, 1923, in Washington D.C. The chapter was established, in part, in response to the desire of graduate brothers, many whom were initiated into Beta Chapter at Howard University, to give aid to the undergraduate brothers and continue the work of Alpha. Chartered by 22 distingushed men of Alpha which included Jewel Nathaniel Allison Murray and Jewel Robert Harold Ogle.
There has been six members who served as the General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and two whom served as the Eastern Region Vice President. Mu Lambda is equally proud of our current brothers making their mark in the Washington D.C. community and beyond. Our chapter has many entrepreneurs, activists, political leaders, philanthropists, academicians, ministers and so much more. Our diverse brotherhood age range is between the ages of 25 and 98. We all work together to maximize the brotherhood of Alpha by following the Objective, Mission and AIMS of our Fraternity.
The officers elected at the first meeting were Brother Harold StrattonPresident, Brother John Lowery-Vice President, Brother Victor DalySecretary, Brother Daniel W. EdmondsTreasurer, and Brother Nathaniel Allison Murray (Jewel)-Chaplain. Mu Lambda was thus established and was on its way into history!

* Omega Chapter Brothers Footnote (FN)
Brothers of Mu Lambda,
As we step into April, I want to extend my deepest gratitude for your dedication and hard work in successfully initiating 13 outstanding new members into our chapter this Spring. Their journey is just beginning, and it is up to us to guide and support them as they embrace the ideals of Alpha.
The lifeblood of Mu Lambda remains strong and growing, thanks to your unwavering commitment. I also want to acknowledge the many brothers who have registered for the upcoming 93rd Eastern Regional Convention over Easter Weekend and encourage all who can to attend the National Convention this summer in Philadelphia. These gatherings are opportunities to strengthen our bonds, build leadership, and shape the future of our Fraternity.
As we continue forward, I urge you to engage in the many upcoming events highlighted in the Torch, including “The Gold Standard” ERC 93 party hosted by Mu Lambda, OLA and IUL Chapter, the Virtual Four-Part Financial Literacy Series, and our Alpha Move wellness initiative. Additionally, let’s show our support by donating to the March of Babies, ensuring we uphold our commitment to service.
With a spirit of Brotherhood and progress, let’s continue moving onward and upward together! Fraternally,
Brother Mikael E. LaRoche, (10-Mu Lambda-13)
President 2024 - 2025
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter
Greetings Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Mu Lambda Chapter!
It’s been a busy few months to kick off 2025, but the efforts have truly paid off. Welcoming new brothers into our Fraternity always fills me with pride and excitement, especially within our own beloved Mu Lambda Chapter. Witnessing the journey of our 13 new brothers over the past couple of years, from their initial curiosity to achieving their goal of membership, has been a true joy. For those who haven’t yet met Spring 2025 The 13 Descendants of Akhenaten, I encourage you to take a moment to welcome them warmly and share any wisdom you can offer.
A big congratulations and a heartfelt shout-out to our Director of Intake Brother Karl Bruce and all the brothers who contributed to the success of Mu Lambda Chapter’s inaugural Neophyte Presentation on March 23rd. It was a milestone event that classically introduced our new brothers to their families and friends.
Now, turning to our upcoming agenda, April is packed with activities. We kick off with our Adopted Block Clean Up initiative this weekend, followed by the Alpha Move and our Brothers Keeper Cyber Security Seminar on April 12th, and the Eastern Regional Convention beginning on April 17th. We hope to see many of you at one or more of these events as we continue the important work of Alpha.
Onward and Upward,
Brother Joseph Gibbs
Vice President (2-Beta-93) 2024 - 2025
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter
Spring 2025 marks a historic moment for Mu Lambda Chapter as we proudly welcome the newest initiates, the Descendants of Akhenaten (D.O.A.). For the first time in our 102-year history, Mu Lambda successfully executed a Probate Show, a public unveiling of the hard work, discipline, and dedication of our newly initiated brothers.
Guided by the steadfast leadership of Dean of the Line, Brother Karl Bruce, Spring 2013, and his dedicated intake team, this moment was a true
celebration of Brotherhood. The effort put forth was not only by the new initiates but by the entire chapter, ensuring that their introduction was nothing short of spectacular.
Held at the historic Thurgood Marshall Center on 12th Street NW, Washington, D.C., the event was filled with excitement, energy, and pride. As the new brothers marched in, sang Alpha hymns, performed skits, and recited poetry and historical passages, their families and friends watched in awe, feeling a deep sense of belonging and admiration.
This moment was made possible by the collective efforts of many, from those who sacrificed countless hours of practice to the brothers who contributed their wisdom and guidance. The bonds forged, the sleepless nights, the laughter, and the unforgettable memories—all of it has cemented this as a moment in Mu Lambda history that will be remembered for years to come.
We thank every brother who played a role in bringing this vision to life. The legacy of Mu Lambda continues to grow, and this is just the beginning of the impact our new initiates will make. Welcome to the House of Alpha!

THE MU LAMBDA CHAPTER OF CELEBRATED THE WELCOME OF 13 NEW BROTHERS
In true Alpha style, the Chapter held its FIRST public Initiation ceremony. But it was topped off with a toast to the new members, who joined us at Flirt Bar and Lounge in Washington DC, to celebrate their accomplishments. After a long morning of preparing, and a welcome to the fraternity that will be on their hearts and minds for decades, as the chapter President, I saw it fit to roll out a GOLD CARPET for these new initiates.
They invited their friends, and families to a happy hour that was hosted by brother Nnamdi
Olebara, and did not dissappoint.
The music was in the air, wings, food and drinks were being served by the establishment. Everyone present had a smile on their face as we continued our warm welcome of the 13 Desecendents.
This is the begining of “NEW TRADITIONS” for the chapter as we step into the second century of our existence. Markng it with pride, and joy. Celebrating our accomplishments and our legacy is going to be the stamp of our future.
With this we say CHEERS! Cheers to a new line, cheers to the future, Cheers to the effort it took to make this all come to life. THE WORK BEGINS NOW!

MU LAMBDA BROTHER, PIERRE BOYNTON SUPPORTED THE NIGHT
On March 24, 2025, The Brothers of Delta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. hosted their annual Alpha Legislative Night. This annual event took place at Governor Calvert House in Annapolis, MD.
Governor Wes Moore (Sigma Sigma, ’00) was the keynote speaker and encouraged those present by stating “We are made for this time because we were made during this time.”
Maryland state Senator, the Honorable Bro. Charle Sydnor (Delta Lambda ’96) also had words of encouragement for those present.
This event is an opportunity for the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. to interact with
brothers who are serving in legislature and gain a perspective about what is going within US Government. The Alpha Legislative Night also emphasis the importance of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. national program of A Voteless People is a Hopeless People, because many state and local leaders spoke on issues that we are currently facing within the state of Maryland.
As a fraternity we Must, now more than ever, continue to hold high the light of Alpha as we provide service and advocacy to our communities.

On the first Saturday of every month for over 6 years, Mu Lambda has served the women of the House of Ruth with Lunch. Once a month, as a service project brothers elect themselves as the point of contact, or work with their line to purchase and donate these meals.
As a chapter, this service initiative goes beyond our call of duty. I constantly applaud each brother and member who serve BLINDLY, as they do not see the lasting impact of this effort. In the last 6 years there have only been 2 opportunities for the brotherhood to carefully engage with program participants. Last month at our “Sip and Paint” we had a limited interaction, but impactful and then a few years prior we hosted a Beautification Day, under Brother Eddie Neal’s administrationthese two engagements allowed brothers to
have first hand impact on the ladies who are a part of the House of Ruth.
As a new Board Member, it is my duty to create more opportunities for us as a fraternity to engage safely and positively with the House of Ruth as a community partner. I hope to have quarterly impact opportunities and encourage other community partners to join Mu Lambda in this mission of change.
House of Ruth is heading toward 50 years in Washington D.C., and it is my mission to continue to be of IMPACT to each participant and their families. When they see our letters - it will be associated with men they can trust!
I look forward to growing our relationship and mentorship.

MU LAMBDA CHAPTER OF CELEBRATED
OF
Brother David Edgerton II, (Jr.) 5 BE 92, a proud graduate of North Carolina A&T University came in from Minnessota, and made an indelible impact on the Mu Lambda Chapter upon his arrival. A jovial, yet powerful man - he is a miestro with the keyboard but, also - has stepped up as an impactful member of the chapter, championing leadership initiatives and moving ideas forward for the current administration. We welcomed the Junior with open arms, and he has embraced the chapter with love and dedicated service.
Little did we know, his son David Edgerton III (Trey) would soon after express interest in becoming a member of our dear fraternity. A third year law student and future “Double
Bison”, Trey took it upon himself to walk in the the footsteps of his father. Creating an unbroken chain between father and son, that is binded in BROTHERHOOD. The young Edgerton set forth on his war path and has made it across our burning sands as the 7, on our line of 13. His mother, 2 Pi Beta 92 is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.® - and like magic... 2+5 = 7 (The Number of Completion) Kismet!
This stands out as a highlight to me, as many of the members of our chapter are fathers, but few will live to see their son embrace their passion for the fraternity. Brother Rudolf Harris, one of our past presidents was one of the few brothers i personally witnessed have the pleasure of seeing his son, Nolan Harris - be active in our chapter.
I want to continue to wish these brothers a lifelong blessing in this honorable moment. As a father, who would one day LOVE to see my son Levi Xavier LaRoche, step up on his own merit to become a member of our fraternity, and move mountains to do so.
The journey has just started for the Edgerton’s and Trey and his family celebrates his welcome. But the Legacy continues... Let us support them on this new leap into a new future in ALPHA LAND.

NBA STAR ROBERT COVINGTON JOINS ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INCORPORATED
Los Angeles, CA – Los Angeles Clippers forward Robert Covington has added another significant achievement to his resume, becoming a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American men. The 33-year-old NBA veteran shared the exciting news on his Instagram page Tuesday, expressing pride in joining the
esteemed brotherhood.
“Something I never was able to accomplish in college but finally made it happen,” Covington wrote. “Proud to be a part of The Greatest Brotherhood—The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc!!!!”
The post, which included images of Covington sporting Alpha Phi Alpha paraphernalia, was met with an outpouring of congratulations from fans, fellow fraternity members, and NBA peers.
Covington, who attended Tennessee State University before embarking on his NBA career, hinted that joining Alpha Phi Alpha was a goal he had set for himself years ago. While many fraternity members are initiated during their undergraduate years, Covington pursued membership as a graduate initiate, a path taken by numerous accomplished professionals and public figures.

Brother’s Pierre Boynton, Jason Jefferson, Samuel Armstrong, Swain Riley and Mikael LaRoche (President), journeyed to Baltimore on Saturday March 22nd for the Spring Staff meeting as the representatives of our chapter. A day filled with positive reporting of the financial health of the MAAC, and the future vision of our incoming president - Brother Mtokufa Ngwenya.
The morning started off with prayer from brothers in both the Christian faith and
Muslim faith, as a show of unity within our brotherhood. With lunch provided for all and vendors lining the halls, the incoming president provided an evening workshop exercise to close out the meeting.
A well attended and enjoyed day at Johns Hopkins University, we thank the hosting chapters, Sigma Sigma - for making the day possible.

is crucial for a safe online presence in the digital age.
“…if a service is not charging you a fee, then you, my friend, may be the product being sold…”
Social media is a great way to stay in touch with family and friends and keep up to date on the latest news. However, it’s important to know how to manage the security on your accounts.
Understand:
1. Your information is openly stored and used to target advertising
2. Any time you post something, whether you delete it or not, that post becomes stored, indefinitely, and is now the property of the social media application service
Limit the amount of information you post online and adjust your privacy settings accordingly.
Annually review your privacy settings for each social media application you use. Continuously ask yourself: “can I allow my privacy settings to be more
restrictive?”. Constrain your account privacy settings as much as you can tolerate.
Be cautious about sharing personal information: Cybercriminals can use your personal information to carry out targeted attacks, cyber and physical.
Do not post or store personal details or access credentials online, even in private messages. Often fake profiles are used to gain access to your information or send malicious links. Beforeaccepting friend requests or responding to messages, ensure the person is genuine by checking their profile for any red flags, such as a lack of photos or friends.
Malware-laden advertisements often find their way onto users’ timelines through targeted advertising. Clicking on such ads may lead to the inadvertent download of malware, compromising the user’s device and potentially spreading the infection to others within their network.
Also, seriously consider delaying the posting of your vacation pictures until AFTER you return, or at least in the process of returning. Posting “get-away” pictures during an on-going vacation may persuade criminals to easily conclude that you are not at home to guard against a home invasion.
BRO. DAVID EDGERTON II
Brothers, in today’s world, information is power. The ability to access, analyze, and apply knowledge effectively is what separates leaders from followers. As Alpha men, we are called to be thought leaders, innovators, and lifelong learners. But let’s be real—time is limited, and with the overwhelming amount of data available, conducting deep research can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack.
That’s where AI-driven research comes in. If you’ve ever struggled to find highquality, reliable information quickly, you’re not alone. The key to cutting through the noise isn’t just knowing where to look—it’s knowing what to ask. And that’s where mastering the art of a well-crafted prompt becomes essential.
A prompt isn’t just a question; it’s a strategic command that directs AI tools
like ChatGPT to generate focused, relevant, and insightful responses. The more precise your prompt, the more valuable the output. Here’s how to craft prompts that deliver real results:
A vague prompt leads to a vague response. Instead of asking, “Tell me about leadership,” refine it: Example: “Analyze the leadership principles of W.E.B. Du Bois and how they apply to Black professionals navigating corporate America today.”
Are you looking for historical context, contemporary examples, statistical data, or expert insights? Defining the scope ensures that AI delivers depth rather than surface-level responses. Example: “Provide a comparative analysis of Booker T. Washington’s and Du Bois’ leadership styles, including their impact on economic empowerment within the Black community.”
Do you need a bullet-point summary, an in-depth essay, a structured outline, or an action plan? Clarifying the format helps refine the AI’s response. Example: “Summarize the top five research-based strategies for Black entrepreneurs to build
BRO. DAVID EDGERTON II
generational wealth, with actionable steps.”
4. Request Sources and Citations
Not all AI-generated content includes verifiable sources, but you can increase accuracy by explicitly requesting references. Example: “List peer-reviewed studies on the impact of mentorship programs for Black college students, with citations.”
5. Refine with Follow-Ups
AI-generated responses aren’t always perfect on the first try. Use follow-up prompts to clarify or deepen the research. Example: “Expand on point #3 by including case studies of Alpha men who have successfully implemented these principles.”
Using the following prompt to start a research session with your tool of choice
We are going to use ChatGPT for this exercise:
I’m researching [specific topic/argument].
Please help me trace this intellectual history through time by:
1. Identifying the key thinkers and their core arguments, starting from [earliest relevant period] through [end period], organized chronologically.
2. For each thinker:
- Summarize their main contribution to this debate in 2-3 sentences
- Note which previous thinkers they were responding to or building upon
- Highlight any major departures from earlier thinking
- Identify their lasting influence on later thinkers
3. Analyze how the central arguments evolved over time by:
- Tracking key conceptual shifts
- Noting where perspectives converged or diverged
- Highlighting major turning points in the debate
4. Create a “conversation map” showing how different thinkers and schools of thought influenced each other.
5. Suggest specific primary sources that best represent each major position.
And to make it even more powerful, try following up with any of these analysis requests:
Compare how [specific aspect] was viewed by different schools of thought
Identify any parallel debates happening in other fields
Note any historical events that significantly influenced the evolution of these ideas
Highlight any modern implications or ongoing relevance of these historical debates
Whether writing an article, preparing a speech, or developing a strategic initiative, leveraging AI for research can elevate your impact. Imagine generating highquality insights in minutes rather than spending hours sifting through fragmented information.
However, let’s be clear—AI does not replace critical thinking. It is a tool, not a substitute for discernment and wisdom. The real power comes from how you interpret, challenge, and apply the information to drive meaningful change.
Brothers, it is that time of year when we begin to think in the spirit of giving and giving thanks. In that spirit, the Mu Lambda Foundation participates in two key funding programs through which federal and District of Columbia employees can share the gift of the giving.
The Combined Federal Campaign - CFC (https://www.opm.gov/combined-federal-campaign) is a resource that allows U.S. government employees to make regular payroll deductions in support of the Mu Lambda Foundation and its charitable and community service programs.
The DC One Fund (https://os.dc.gov/page/dc-one-fund-each-one-give-one) provides an opportunity for employees of the District of Columbia to do the same. All donations through these funds are tax deductible and deducted from your paycheck regularly. What could be an easier or better way to support the programs you care about?
As open season begins for 2023, you may plan your weekly, biweekly, or monthly contributions to the Mu Lambda Foundation by contributing to charity number 66770 in the CFC, and number 9556 in the DC One Fund.
Let’s make 2023 the best year yet for supporting youth and abused women in the DC area. Thank you for your continued support.

ALPHA QUOTE TO SERVE BY...
“THINK Alpha Phi Alpha, TALK Alpha Phi Alpha, PROMOTE Alpha Phi Alpha, and LABOR for the broad principles of idealism for which Alpha Phi Alpha was created, so that humanity shall look on us as a body worthwhile.”
Brother Henry L. Dickason, 5th General President
April showers are a sure sign that spring is in full swing! As the rain gently falls, it nourishes the earth, helping flowers bloom and trees regain their lush green leaves. The phrase “April showers bring May flowers” reminds us that even rainy days have a purpose, leading to new growth and brighter days ahead. While the drizzle may seem inconvenient at times, it’s nature’s way of refreshing the world, washing away the remnants of winter and setting the stage for a season filled with color and life.
Beyond the science of seasonal rain, April showers also symbolize renewal and patience. Just as rainstorms pass to reveal clear skies, life’s challenges often lead to new beginnings and growth. Whether you enjoy the soothing sound of raindrops or the fresh, earthy scent that follows a storm, there’s something magical about April’s rainfall. So, grab an umbrella, embrace the beauty of the season, and remember that a little rain today leads to something wonderful tomorrow!

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served.
A member’s duties should be:
1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life.
2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course.
3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein.
4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
