Mu Lambda is Alpha's eleventh alumni chapter, chartered October 1, 1923, in Washington D.C. The chapter was established, in part, in response to the desire of graduate brothers, many whom were initiated into Beta Chapter at Howard University, to give aid to the undergraduate brothers and continue the work of Alpha. Chartered by 22 distingushed men of Alpha which included Jewel Nathaniel Allison Murray and Jewel Robert Harold Ogle.
There has been six members who served as the General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and two whom served as the Eastern Region Vice President. Mu Lambda is equally proud of our current brothers making their mark in the Washington D.C. community and beyond. Our chapter has many entrepreneurs, activists, political leaders, philanthropists, academicians, ministers and so much more. Our diverse brotherhood age range is between the ages of 25 and 98. We all work together to maximize the brotherhood of Alpha by following the Objective, Mission and AIMS of our Fraternity.
The officers elected at the first meeting were Brother Harold StrattonPresident, Brother John Lowery-Vice President, Brother Victor DalySecretary, Brother Daniel W. EdmondsTreasurer, and Brother Nathaniel Allison Murray (Jewel)-Chaplain. Mu Lambda was thus established and was on its way into history!

Brothers of Mu Lambda,
As we welcome March and gain much needed glimpses of Spring, we celebrate the growth of trailblazing women who continue to break barriers and breathe the warmth of life into our society. Their resilience inspires us to advocate for equity and empowerment.
In February, our House of Ruth “Sip & Paint” was a tremendous success, thanks to your participation and support as a chapter. Your efforts created a meaningful experience for the program’s staff and participants.
We have several upcoming opportunities to engage and strengthen our Brotherhood and support the communities we serve. Our Health & Wellness initiatives, including “Alpha Move” and a virtual series, will focus on prioritizing our well-being. The Financial Planning Series, led by Brother Matthew Aaron, will provide valuable insights into financial growth and wealth-building. Additionally, our 93rd Eastern Regional Spring Social - Gold Standard and Brotherhood activities will offer great opportunities to connect and continue our work together.
Let’s remain engaged, impactful, and steadfast in our commitment to service and leadership. Thank you for your dedication—let’s make March and April a season of growth and Brotherhood!
Fraternally,
Brother Mikael E. LaRoche, (10-Mu Lambda-13)
President 2024 - 2025
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter
Greetings Brothers of Mu Lambda Chapter,
I hope we’re all looking forward to the arrival of spring and some warmer weather. I want to take a moment to check in on those who have been impacted by recent employment layoffs. This is a challenging time for many, and I want to remind you that our brotherhood is here to offer support. If you need assistance or resources, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
In the coming months, we are planning several programs to address the current climate. First up is the Grow Your Wealth virtual series, starting on March 26th. This promises to be an informative and valuable series, presented in partnership with Lux Wealth Planning and led by our very own Brother Matt Aaron. I can personally attest to Brother Aaron’s expertise—it’s not something you’ll want to miss.
Additionally, if you haven’t already, please register for this year’s Eastern Region Convention in Bethesda. With the convention happening right in our backyard, it’s important that we show up in full force and represent our chapter well.
I’m excited for what’s ahead and look forward to seeing you all this weekend.
Brother Joseph Gibbs Vice President (2-Beta-93)

“We must never forget that Black history is American history. The achievements of African Americans have contributed to our nation’s greatness.” – Yvette Clarke
March is Women’s History Month, a time to honor the achievements, contributions, and resilience of women throughout history. Women have played a vital role in shaping every part of our society—from politics and science to civil rights, business, sports, and beyond.
The Origins of Women’s History Month
1980 – Started as Women’s History Week, thanks to activists and educators.
1987 – Congress officially declared March as Women’s History Month in the U.S.
Today – Many countries worldwide now celebrate women’s history throughout March.
This month serves as a powerful reminder of the struggles and triumphs of women who have fought for equality, representation, and opportunity. It ensures that women’s voices—especially those often overlooked—are recognized, celebrated, and remembered.
As we celebrate, we must also recognize the historic contributions of Black sororities, which have been at the forefront of education, social justice, and community service for over a century.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA) –Founded in 1908 at Howard University, AKA is the first historically Black sorority. Known for its commitment to scholarship, leadership, and service, AKA has championed programs in education, health, and economic empowerment.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (DST) –Founded in 1913 at Howard University, DST has been a powerhouse in activism and social change, participating in the Women’s Suffrage March of 1913 and continuing to advocate for voting rights, education, and economic development.Universities.

Brother Arlester Brown, WWII Veteran & Proud member of Mu Lambda.
Tec5 Arlester Brown 599th Quartermaster Laundry Company
Arlester Brown was born on April 1, 1924 in Homer, Louisiana and spent a great deal of his life in Shreveport, Louisiana. At age 18, he was drafted on July 6, 1942 into the U.S. Army. After attending basic training at Camp Ellis in Peoria, Illinois, Arlester sailed to Southampton, England.
Arlester was deployed in various locations across Saint Lo and Normandy, France, Belgium, The Netherlands and the Rhineland area in Germany. He worked as a Quartermaster engineer with the 599th Quartermaster Laundry Company which was known for its involvement in the historical cleaning and supply for the front line. The supply line was formed by all Black troops who worked tirelessly to keep the troops’ clothing and cleaning supplies in line while the soldiers were in and out of combat during World War II. He also assisted in providing the soldiers personal hygiene and clean clothing. Arlester and other black soldiers were treated with more respect and equality in Europe than home in a highly segregated American culture.
His most memorable time in World War II was in January, 1945 when an unmanned buzz bomb exploded near him and he was hit by shrapnel.
Arlester was discharged at Camp Shelby on December 28, 1945. Now, Brother Brown enjoys the luxuries of being called to serve as a representative of the War and relations between all the nations affected.
Most recently, Brother Brown had the honor of sitting with France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, at the French Embassy in Washshington D.C. where he was honored by the president for his contributions to history!

THE MU LAMBDA CHAPTER OF CELEBRATES OUR OWN, DC WARD 5 COUNCILMAN - BRO. ZACHARY PARKER
The Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is proud to recognize the remarkable leadership and service of Brother Zachary Parker, Councilman for Ward 5 in Washington, D.C., where our esteemed Mu Lambda Chapter House resides. Brother Parker, initiated into the Alpha Mu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in 2007, has remained steadfast in his commitment to uplifting communities and fostering meaningful change across the District.
As a dedicated public servant, Councilman Parker has tirelessly advocated for equitable education, affordable housing, economic
empowerment, and public safety. His leadership has been instrumental in improving the quality of life for residents of Ward 5, ensuring that the community remains a thriving and inclusive space for all Washingtonians. From championing investments in public schools to pushing for economic development initiatives, Brother Parker continues to be a progressive force for good.
We take this moment to thank Brother Parker for his unwavering dedication and impactful service. His commitment to justice, fairness, and community development exemplifies the values of Alpha Phi Alpha—leadership, scholarship, and service.
Ward 5 Councilmember Zachary Parker is an educator and a public servant. Zachary grew up on the South Side of Chicago and received his Bachelor of Science in Communication Science and Disorders from Northwestern University and a Master of Arts in Policy and Leadership from Columbia University. He began his career as a 7th grade math teacher in New Orleans post-Katrina with Teach for America and spent nearly a decade supporting DC school leaders to improve student learning.
In 2018, Zachary was elected by Ward 5 neighbors to serve as their representative on the DC State Board of Education. He was unanimously selected by his colleagues to serve as the President of the State Board in 2021. In 2022, Zachary won the election to represent Ward 5 on the Council of the District of Columbia
As we feature our dear brother and councilman, we ask for continued support in amplifying his efforts and standing with him as he works toward a stronger, more unified Ward 5. The Mu Lambda Chapter looks forward to future collaborations, ensuring that we, too, play an integral role in supporting our community and upholding the fraternal spirit of excellence.
Bro. Mikael LaRoche President, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Mu Lambda Chapter
Dear Ward 5 neighbors,
It is the honor of a lifetime to represent you on the Council of the District of Columbia. Since taking office in January 2023, my team and I have been hard at work building healthy communities by enacting transformative policy, fighting for Ward 5, and making government accessible and transparent.
In this Progress Report, I’m sharing some of the highlights of our work. From securing the District Child Tax Credit for working families, to making new park projects in Ward 5 a reality, to reaching historic declines in crime – we have a lot to be proud of, and so much more to do. I want to be clear that the progress we’ve seen has only been possible through collaboration with neighbors. These are our wins, together.
I’m excited to roll up my sleeves and continue working alongside our community. Together, we can make historic investments in long-overlooked neighborhoods of Ward 5; introduce and champion bold legislation to end cycles of violence, poverty, and displacement; and, above all, take care of one another. As I always say, I know none better than Ward 5.
I invite you to take an even deeper look at our work over the past two years by visiting zacharyparkerward5.com/2025progress or scanning the QR code below.

Our Chair, Brother Joseph Housey III, has done a remarkable job of connecting with our seasoned brothers! I couldn’t be more proud of his work and efforts as the chapter’s - A. Charles Haston Brother’s Keeper Chairman.
Brother’s Keeper is a service program developed with the mission of advocating and improving the quality of life for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. brothers, their spouses, and widows who are retired, are elders, have disabilities and are ailing; and vulnerable community members. Upon identification of need, the Brother’s Keeper
Program also provides assistance to mature and ailing members of its communities. Limitations caused by advanced age place demands on family members, caregivers, and the larger community to ensure that elders remain independently functional. The goal of the Brother’s Keeper Program is to promote dignity and independence among Alpha family and community members who need help in keeping their lives and homes functional. To all the work that is being done! APPLAUSE IS IN ORDER!

On February 14th, the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Beta Chapter, in conjunction with Mu Lambda Chapter, held the 31st Annual Brother 2 Brother Youth Conference. The conference, aimed at 6th–11th grade Black male students, was well attended, with close to 100 students from schools across the Washington, DC area. The day’s events included a college tour and various workshops on graphic design, multimedia marketing, goal-setting, and leadership training. Beta Chapter’s Ms. Black & Gold Court also led a workshop on chivalry and how to approach women respectfully.
Special thanks to Bro. Jeffery Taylor, Bro. Karl Bruce, Bro. Kelechi Ononiwu and Bro. Jason Jefferson, who supported the event.
A special acknowledgment goes to Bro. Jefferson for sending students from the school where he serves as principal to participate in the conference.
On February 21st, Beta Chapter hosted Canvas Conversations, an event that provided a space for attendees to express themselves through art, using creative expression to highlight and address important social justice issues. Through painting, participants explored their personal experiences and shared their stories in a meaningful way.
From February 24th to 27th, Beta Chapter’s Ms. Black & Gold Court held its “Reign and Radiance Week”, which featured a series of engaging events:
• Monday: Reign & Rhythm
• Tuesday: Defining the Crown
• Wednesday: Sealed with Time
The week concluded on Thursday with a Ms. Black & Gold Informational, which was well attended and showed promising interest for the upcoming Ms. Black & Gold Pageant in April.
Finally, the Brothers of Beta Chapter would like to highlight Bro. Christopher J. Tyson (2-B-95), a Beta Chapter initiate
and former member of Mu Lambda Chapter. Bro. Tyson was honored with the 2025 Alumni Award for Distinguished Postgraduate Achievement at the Howard University Charter Day Dinner celebration. As president of the National Community Stabilization Trust (NCST), he leads efforts to promote affordable homeownership, stabilize neighborhoods, and advance racial equity. A former law professor at LSU and CEO of Build Baton Rouge, Bro. Tyson has secured over $50 million in grants to revitalize underserved communities. He currently serves on Howard University’s Board of Trustees.
Beta Chapter remains committed to scholarship, service, and the uplift of our community.

Phishing attacks occur when a hacker tries to lure the user, while posing as a legitimate entity into revealing private information. The scammer convinces the victim to take a specific action, such as clicking a link, transferring funds or paying fake invoices. In doing so cyber criminals can gain access to one’s personal computer. Once they gain control, they can have full access to your personal data including banking information, credit card details, and passwords.
The human factor is the WEAKEST point in IT security. Due to the effectiveness of social engineering, phishing is very commonly used in cybercrime. Cybercriminals have been successful using emails, text messages, and direct messages on social media or in video games, to get people to respond with their personal information. One of the most effective defenses against phishing attacks is educating users on the signs of an attack.

Never click on links or open attachments from unknown senders
Be careful opening links from familiar sources, if unsure:
o Look for slight variations in the email address that might indicate a fake sender
o Contact the sender before opening to verify
If you suspect a phishing email, delete it immediately
If possible, use built-in spam filters supplied by your email provider. This tool can often detect suspicious emails and prevent them from reaching your inbox. However, the tool can also prevent desired email from reaching you as well.
Even if a phisher gets your password, incorporate multifactor authentication to add an extra layer of security. This practice requires access to your phone or another device to verify log in onto your laptop.

Brothers, in today’s world, information is power. The ability to access, analyze, and apply knowledge effectively is what separates leaders from followers. As Alpha men, we are called to be thought leaders, innovators, and lifelong learners. But let’s be real—time is limited, and with the overwhelming amount of data available, conducting deep research can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack.
That’s where AI-driven research comes in. If you’ve ever struggled to find highquality, reliable information quickly, you’re not alone. The key to cutting through the noise isn’t just knowing where to look—it’s knowing what to ask. And that’s where mastering the art of a well-crafted prompt becomes essential.
A prompt isn’t just a question; it’s a strategic command that directs AI tools
like ChatGPT to generate focused, relevant, and insightful responses. The more precise your prompt, the more valuable the output. Here’s how to craft prompts that deliver real results:
A vague prompt leads to a vague response. Instead of asking, “Tell me about leadership,” refine it: Example: “Analyze the leadership principles of W.E.B. Du Bois and how they apply to Black professionals navigating corporate America today.”
Are you looking for historical context, contemporary examples, statistical data, or expert insights? Defining the scope ensures that AI delivers depth rather than surface-level responses. Example: “Provide a comparative analysis of Booker T. Washington’s and Du Bois’ leadership styles, including their impact on economic empowerment within the Black community.”
Do you need a bullet-point summary, an in-depth essay, a structured outline, or an action plan? Clarifying the format helps refine the AI’s response. Example: “Summarize the top five research-based strategies for Black entrepreneurs to build
BRO. DAVID EDGERTON II
generational wealth, with actionable steps.”
4. Request Sources and Citations
Not all AI-generated content includes verifiable sources, but you can increase accuracy by explicitly requesting references. Example: “List peer-reviewed studies on the impact of mentorship programs for Black college students, with citations.”
5. Refine with Follow-Ups
AI-generated responses aren’t always perfect on the first try. Use follow-up prompts to clarify or deepen the research. Example: “Expand on point #3 by including case studies of Alpha men who have successfully implemented these principles.”
Using the following prompt to start a research session with your tool of choice
We are going to use ChatGPT for this exercise:
I’m researching [specific topic/argument].
Please help me trace this intellectual history through time by:
1. Identifying the key thinkers and their core arguments, starting from [earliest relevant period] through [end period], organized chronologically.
2. For each thinker:
- Summarize their main contribution to this debate in 2-3 sentences
- Note which previous thinkers they were responding to or building upon
- Highlight any major departures from earlier thinking
- Identify their lasting influence on later thinkers
3. Analyze how the central arguments evolved over time by:
- Tracking key conceptual shifts
- Noting where perspectives converged or diverged
- Highlighting major turning points in the debate
4. Create a “conversation map” showing how different thinkers and schools of thought influenced each other.
5. Suggest specific primary sources that best represent each major position.
And to make it even more powerful, try following up with any of these analysis requests:
Compare how [specific aspect] was viewed by different schools of thought
Identify any parallel debates happening in other fields
Note any historical events that significantly influenced the evolution of these ideas
Highlight any modern implications or ongoing relevance of these historical debates
Whether writing an article, preparing a speech, or developing a strategic initiative, leveraging AI for research can elevate your impact. Imagine generating highquality insights in minutes rather than spending hours sifting through fragmented information.
However, let’s be clear—AI does not replace critical thinking. It is a tool, not a substitute for discernment and wisdom. The real power comes from how you interpret, challenge, and apply the information to drive meaningful change.
Brothers, it is that time of year when we begin to think in the spirit of giving and giving thanks. In that spirit, the Mu Lambda Foundation participates in two key funding programs through which federal and District of Columbia employees can share the gift of the giving.
The Combined Federal Campaign - CFC (https://www.opm.gov/combined-federal-campaign) is a resource that allows U.S. government employees to make regular payroll deductions in support of the Mu Lambda Foundation and its charitable and community service programs.
The DC One Fund (https://os.dc.gov/page/dc-one-fund-each-one-give-one) provides an opportunity for employees of the District of Columbia to do the same. All donations through these funds are tax deductible and deducted from your paycheck regularly. What could be an easier or better way to support the programs you care about?
As open season begins for 2023, you may plan your weekly, biweekly, or monthly contributions to the Mu Lambda Foundation by contributing to charity number 66770 in the CFC, and number 9556 in the DC One Fund.
Let’s make 2023 the best year yet for supporting youth and abused women in the DC area. Thank you for your continued support.

March is a time for renewal and celebration. March marks the shift from winter’s chill to the warmth of spring. The days grow longer, flowers bloom, and a fresh energy fills the air. Let’s channel that energy into strengthening our chapter and supporting our communities, especially our federal employees and their families, who need us now more than ever.
Did you know federal employees make up less than 1% of the U.S. population? Their work is invaluable, and they deserve our appreciation and support.

March is also Women’s History Month, a time to honor the resilience, achievements, and contributions of women throughout history. As we celebrate, let’s uplift the voices of women of color, whose leadership and impact continue to shape our lives, communities, and country.
Let’s embrace this month with purpose, unity, and gratitude as we move forward together!

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Mu Lambda Chapter 2405 First Street, NW Washington, DC 20001
An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served.
A member’s duties should be:
1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life.
2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course.
3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein.
4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
