Mu Lambda is Alpha's eleventh alumni chapter, chartered October 1, 1923, in Washington D.C. The chapter was established, in part, in response to the desire of graduate brothers, many whom were initiated into Beta Chapter at Howard University, to give aid to the undergraduate brothers and continue the work of Alpha. Chartered by 22 distingushed men of Alpha which included Jewel Nathaniel Allison Murray and Jewel Robert Harold Ogle.
There has been six members who served as the General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and two whom served as the Eastern Region Vice President. Mu Lambda is equally proud of our current brothers making their mark in the Washington D.C. community and beyond. Our chapter has many entrepreneurs, activists, political leaders, philanthropists, academicians, ministers and so much more. Our diverse brotherhood age range is between the ages of 25 and 98. We all work together to maximize the brotherhood of Alpha by following the Objective, Mission and AIMS of our Fraternity.
The officers elected at the first meeting were Brother Harold StrattonPresident, Brother John Lowery-Vice President, Brother Victor DalySecretary, Brother Daniel W. EdmondsTreasurer, and Brother Nathaniel Allison Murray (Jewel)-Chaplain. Mu Lambda was thus established and was on its way into history!

* Omega Chapter Brothers Footnote (FN)
Brothers of Mu Lambda,
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each of you for an active and impactful January. Your strong participation in the MLK Holiday DC Peace Walk and Parade, our Chapter Retreat, and other engagements across the District set the tone for a year of brotherhood, leadership, and service. You continue to exemplify the spirit of Alpha, and for that, I thank you.
As we step into February, we recognize it as both Heart Health Awareness Month and the Month of Love. I encourage each of you to prioritize your well-being and check in on your loved ones and fellow brothers—because Alpha is not just an organization, it is a family.
In the spirit of service, I ask for your support in making a lasting impact on the women of The House of Ruth. Please contribute to our Amazon Wishlist as we prepare to host an amazing event for the women in need of our care and support. This is an opportunity for Mu Lambda to show love in action—a fundamental pillar of our Fraternity.
And, of course, we cannot forget fellowship! Be sure to join us for our upcoming Super Bowl Watch Party, where we will gather in the spirit of brotherhood, competition, and camaraderie.
February is Black History Month, but for Mu Lambda, Black history is our everyday reality. We stand on the shoulders of trailblazers, pioneers, and visionaries, and our Chapter remains at the forefront of impact and excellence. Let’s take this month to reflect, honor, and continue making history in everything we do.
Brothers, stay engaged, steadfast, and committed to our mission. Let’s keep pushing Mu Lambda Onward and Upward!
Fraternally,
Brother Mikael E. LaRoche, (10-Mu Lambda-13) President
2024 - 2025
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Greetings Brothers of Mu Lambda Chapter,
As we celebrate Black History Month, and honor the extraordinary contributions of African Americans to our nation’s history; it is equally important to acknowledge the profound role our Dear Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and specifically, Mu Lambda Chapter has played in shaping this legacy, particularly here in Washington, DC.
In recent weeks, it has become increasingly clear that as a fraternity and as individuals, we face significant challenges ahead in preserving our history, legacy, and very existence in this land we call home. Now more than ever, we must roll up our sleeves, harness our collective intelligence, and work with purpose for the greater good of society. This is not the time for complacency—this is the time for action.
The winter months have been filled with activity, and it is imperative that we maintain this energy. A special thank you to all who attended the Mid-Year Executive Committee Retreat. The turnout and discussions were invaluable. While virtual meetings have become a staple in our professional and civic lives, nothing can replace the power of face-to-face engagement. The energy, camaraderie, and depth of conversation that come from being in the same room are irreplaceable. Speaking of rolling up your sleeves… A special acknowledgment goes to Brother Housey for his dedication in coordinating calls and check-ins with our senior brothers during last month’s cold weather. The initial feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting how much these Brother’s Keeper visits were both needed and appreciated. Brother Housey has some excellent plans in the works to further strengthen our connection with our senior brothers. Thank you, Bro, for your commitment and leadership.
I also want to extend my gratitude to Brother Armstrong, Brother Gaston and Brother Taylor for their leadership in coordinating our participation in this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in Washington, DC. Your efforts ensured that Mu Lambda remained visible and engaged in this significant community event.
Brother Joseph Gibbs
Vice President (2-Beta-93) 2024 - 2025

Alpha Phi Alpha: A Legacy of Black Excellence and Leadership
“We must never forget that Black history is American history. The achievements of African Americans have contributed to our nation’s greatness.” – Yvette Clarke
From the Seven Jewels who laid the foundation to the countless Brothers who have shaped history, Alpha Phi Alpha has always been more than a fraternity—it is a movement.
A Legacy of Leadership
Alpha Phi Alpha men have been pioneers in politics, education, business, and civil rights, leaving an indelible mark on history. Some of the most influential figures in Black history proudly wore the Black and Old Gold, including:
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – The face of the Civil Rights Movement, whose dream reshaped America.
Thurgood Marshall – The first African American Supreme Court Justice, who fought for justice through landmark cases like Brown v. Board of Education.
As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor the powerful legacy of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the first intercollegiate Greekletter fraternity founded for Black men. Since its founding on December 4, 1906, at Cornell University, Alpha Phi Alpha has been at the forefront of social change, leadership, and advocacy for African Americans.
Paul Robeson – A scholar, artist, and activist who used his voice to advocate for civil rights. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. – A political trailblazer who championed social and economic justice in Congress.
These men—and so many others—have exemplified the fraternity’s motto: “First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All.”
Mu Lambda: 101 Years of Service in Washington, D.C.
Closer to home, Mu Lambda Chapter has been a pillar of Black excellence in the nation’s capital for over a century. From supporting educational initiatives and mentorship programs to community service projects like Project Giveback and the Mu Lambda Angel Tree, the chapter continues to live out the fraternity’s mission.
This Black History Month, we also recognize Brother Victor R. Daly, a charter member of Mu Lambda, whose work with the U.S. Employment Service helped to integrate job opportunities for African Americans. His efforts paved the way for economic empowerment and workplace equality.
Black History Month is not just a time for reflection but a reminder of the work that still lies ahead. As Alpha men, we must continue to:
Lead with purpose in our careers, communities, and families.
Advocate for justice and equality in every space we occupy.
Uplift the next generation, ensuring that our youth have access to education, mentorship, and opportunity.
Alpha Phi Alpha has always been at the forefront of change. From the days of the Harlem Renaissance to the March on Washington, from the push for voting rights to today’s fight for equity, we remain torchbearers of progress.
As we honor our past, let us also shape our future—Onward and Upward!
Fraternally,
Bro. Mikael E. LaRoche President

Brother Victor R. Daly: A Trailblazer for Equity, Opportunity, and Excellence
“We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
As we celebrate Black History Month, we take time to honor one of Mu Lambda’s cherished charter members, Brother Victor R. Daly, a man whose impact extended far beyond the walls of Alpha Phi Alpha and into the social, political, and economic fabric of America. A pioneer,
an activist, and a visionary, Daly’s life was dedicated to breaking barriers in employment, education, and even the world of competitive bridge. His unwavering commitment to equality reminds us why we must continue pushing forward in our own work as Alpha men.
Brother Daly’s tenure with the United States Employment Service (USES) within the Department of Labor was nothing short of revolutionary. Beginning his work in 1934, he dedicated over three decades to integrating previously segregated professions, expanding job opportunities for African Americans at a time when systemic racism restricted access to employment. His advocacy opened doors for Black professionals in industries that had long been off-limits, proving that progress is not given—it is fought for.
His writings on employment equality were not just policy suggestions; they were blueprints for a new America. Through articles, journals, and speeches delivered at high schools, universities, and on radio stations throughout Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Daly ensured that young Black men and women saw employment not as a distant hope, but as an attainable reality.
Beyond his professional contributions, Brother Daly was a gifted writer who used his pen as a weapon against injustice. His 1932 novel, Not Only War, remains one of the most powerful examinations of the African American experience in military service. At a time when Black soldiers fought for a country that denied them basic rights, Daly’s work underscored the paradox of patriotism and prejudice. His collection of short stories and journal articles further solidified his place as a literary force, documenting the struggles and triumphs of Black America.
While many recognize Brother Daly for his work in employment and literature, few may know of his pivotal role in founding the American Bridge Association (ABA) in 1932. Denied entry into the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL)
due to racial discrimination, Daly and his peers built an organization where Black players could compete at the highest levels.
His leadership as Eastern Vice President (19411943) and National President (1949-1964) was instrumental in challenging the color line in competitive bridge. Under his tenure, the ABA secured venues in major hotels for national tournaments, breaking racial barriers in the hospitality industry and paving the way for future Black organizations to hold their conventions in spaces once closed to them. His work with the ABA exemplifies the Alpha spirit—when denied a seat at the table, we build our own.
Brother Victor R. Daly’s life was a testament to the very mission of Alpha Phi Alpha: “Developing leaders, promoting brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.” Whether in employment, literature, or competition, he refused to accept exclusion and worked tirelessly to create pathways for Black advancement.
As we honor his legacy this Black History Month, let us recommit ourselves to the ideals he championed. Mu Lambda has always been home to men of impact, and it is our duty to continue the work of Brother Daly—fighting for justice, creating opportunities, and ensuring that the next generation inherits a world better than the one we found.
Let us stand firm in our mission and continue to uplift the principles of manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind.

Bro. Daniel Mushala Editor,
This inspiring month, observed annually, has its roots in the United States, where it began as Negro History Week in 1926. Thanks to the visionary efforts of historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (https://www.asalh.org), this movement blossomed into a full month-long celebration by 1970.
Today, Black History Month is observed in February in the United States and Canada, and in October in Ireland and the United Kingdom. Negro History Week was carefully planned to coincide with the birthdays of two historical champions for freedom and justice: Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and Frederick Douglass (February 14). From its earliest days, the week emphasized teaching Black history in schools and fostering a sense of pride and empowerment in the community. Even when the initial response was lukewarm, Woodson was
steadfast in his belief that understanding Black history was vital for ensuring the intellectual and cultural survival of Black Americans. His words still echo powerfully today
“If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated”;
Throughout the 1930s, Negro History Week challenged harmful myths, brought Black history into public consciousness, and inspired widespread participation, with churches, schools, and newspapers amplifying its message. By the 1960s, the week had grown in popularity, setting the stage for its transformation into Black History Month.
In 1970, Kent State University hosted the first official celebration of Black History Month, and in 1976, during the United States Bicentennial, President Gerald Ford proclaimed it a national observance. He encouraged Americans to
“seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
Today, Black History Month is a global celebration, honoring the past, inspiring the present, and building a brighter future. It’s a time to reflect on achievements, learn about history, and amplify the voices that have shaped the world. Let’s celebrate together and carry forward this vibrant legacy!

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Mu Lambda Chapter
On an Ice cold Saturday, January 18, 2025, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. proudly participated in the annual MLK Holiday DC Peace Walk and Parade, held at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington, D.C. With the 2025 theme, “Commit to the Noble Struggle of Equal Rights,” the event honored the enduring legacy of Brother Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the fraternity’s most revered member and the architect of the modern Civil Rights Movement.
Over 50 Brothers from Mu Lambda, Omicron Eta Lambda, and Omicron Lambda Alpha Chapters gathered to walk in unity, demonstrating Alpha’s unwavering commitment to justice, service, and advocacy. As we marched through the streets of Washington, D.C., we carried forth Dr. King’s vision—reminding all in
attendance that the fight for equal rights is far from over.
A special thank you to Brother Samuel Armstrong for his tireless commitment to service and excellence. His leadership and dedication continue to inspire the Brothers of Mu Lambda and the greater Washington, D.C. area.
Each year, this event serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of collective action. It is not just a march but a renewal of our pledge to uphold the principles of leadership, advocacy, and community service—values that Dr. King embodied throughout his life.
As we continue into 2025, let this gathering fuel our resolve to be changemakers in our communities, to uplift those in need, and to fight for a more just and equitable society.
Thank you to the organizers of the MLK Holiday DC Peace Walk and Parade for welcoming the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha once again. We remain steadfast in our mission to be “First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All.”

Growing wealth isn’t just about numbers and financial strategies—it’s a holistic process rooted in mindset and emotional intelligence. The journey begins in your mind, as your beliefs about money shape your actions and ultimately your financial future. Here’s how to align your thoughts, emotions, and actions to achieve lasting wealth.
Your mindset defines your relationship with money, while your emotions drive the decisions you make about it. A scarcity mindset can keep you stuck in survival mode, while an abundance mindset empowers you to see opportunities and take calculated risks. Likewise, unchecked emotions like fear or greed can lead to poor decisions, whereas emotional resilience fosters stability and growth.
To grow wealth effectively, you need a balance of financial knowledge, a healthy mindset, and emotional discipline. Below are 7 steps to help you create that foundation.
Wealth begins with believing that resources and opportunities are plentiful. Shift from thinking, “I can’t afford this,” to asking, “How can I afford this?” Practice gratitude for what you have and visualize a future of financial success. This mental shift opens your mind to possibilities and fuels creative problem-solving.
Wealth doesn’t grow without direction. Define specific, measurable, and time-bound financial goals. Whether it’s saving for retirement, buying a home, or starting a business, clarity gives purpose to your efforts. Write these goals down and revisit them regularly to stay motivated.
Knowledge is power. Learn the basics of budgeting, investing, and managing debt. Understanding how money works builds confidence, reduces anxiety, and helps you make informed decisions. Seek books, courses, and mentors to strengthen your financial skills.
Emotions like fear and greed can derail even the best financial plans. Develop strategies to manage stress and make rational decisions. Practice mindfulness, journal about your financial journey, or seek support from a coach or advisor. The ability to remain calm and focused during market fluctuations or financial setbacks is invaluable.
Growing wealth isn’t about grand gestures; it’s about consistency. Automate savings, invest regularly, and avoid impulsive spending. Small, consistent efforts compound over time. Remember, slow and steady wins the race.
Your environment has a significant impact on your mindset. Spend time with people who value growth and financial responsibility. Join communities or networking groups where you can share knowledge, learn from others, and stay inspired.
Wealth-building is a marathon, not a sprint. Avoid the temptation of “get rich quick” schemes and focus on sustainable growth. Celebrate small milestones along the way to keep your motivation high. Trust the process and remain committed, even when progress feels slow.
Growing your wealth requires more than financial strategies—it demands the right mindset, emotional intelligence, and consistent effort. By focusing on abundance, setting clear goals, and building resilience, you can create a strong foundation for financial success.
Remember, wealth isn’t just about accumulating money; it’s about creating a life of freedom, opportunity, and fulfillment. Start today and watch your financial future transform.

providing IT and Cybersecurity tidbits for your personal use
The proposed ban comes at a time of heightened concern in the US about Chinese espionage. The worldwide cybersecurity community has concluded that the app can collect users’ data way beyond what normally is pulled by social apps.
Nowadays, some IT and Cybersecurity companies mandate that their employees sign an Accepted Use Policy Agreement which disallows the employee from installing and running TikTok on their PERSONAL devices. Being found doing so may result in instant termination and a corporate-related fine.
QUICK Background:
• The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) blur the lines between state and private enterprises. Many companies in China are neither completely state-owned nor completely private but instead have a mix of state and private ownership.
• China (along with Russia and Iran), for over a couple of decades, has had this “quiet” cybersecurity war with the US; where cyber-criminal groups are sponsored, managed, created and/or groomed by China. This cybersecurity war has replaced the Cold War. Many of your recent corporate and government related hacking attacks are from these groups.
• Other countries have banned or limited the use (or are considering such action) against TikTok due to cybersecurity/data protection issues:
o Canada
o UK
o Australia
o China (the irony)
o India
o Nepal
o Philippines
o Taiwan
o Austria
o Belgium
o Czechia
o Denmark
o France
o Latvia
o Netherlands
o New Zealand
The outgoing Biden Administration has warned TikTok that it faces a ban in the U.S. if its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, does not sell its stake in the U.S. version of the app.
Unfortunately, this is not a popular decision within the US. TikTok has becomeone of the most popular mobile apps in the country, amassing over 100 million U.S. users. Most of whom do not understand or even care about the cybersecurity ramifications associated with the app. Currently the app generates a good deal of revenue for social influencers and other small businesses. So, it comes down to “National Security v. Popular Opinion”.
The Fascinating History of Valentine’s Day
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I couldn’t resist diving into its intriguing origins.
Did you know that the link between February 14th and romance goes all the way back to ancient Greece and Rome? Let’s explore the love-laden roots of this beloved holiday.
In ancient Rome, February 14th coincided with the festival of Lupercalia, a celebration dedicated to fertility and warding off
evil spirits. This festival was named after the wolf Lupa, who, according to legend, nurtured the orphaned twins Romulus and Remus—the eventual founders of Rome. While some believe Lupercalia predates Rome itself, the exact origins remain shrouded in mystery.
Ancient Greece: Divine Union
Around the same time of year in ancient Greece, mid-February marked the end of Gamelion, a month devoted to celebrating the sacred marriage of Zeus and Hera, the king and queen of the gods. This divine union added its own layer of romantic symbolism to the season.
Valentine:
As for St. Valentine, the story takes an unexpected twist. There were actually three St. Valentines—one from Rome, one from Terni, and one from Africa. Interestingly, none of them were initially connected to love or romance.
By 1382, however, the association had firmly taken root. Geoffrey Chaucer, in his poem honoring the engagement of King Richard II to Anne of Bohemia, tied Valentine’s Day to courtly love with these famous lines: For this was on seynt Volantynys day Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.
(“For this was Saint Valentine’s Day / When every bird comes there to choose his mate.”)
From ancient wolves and gods to Chaucer’s romantic poetry, Valentine’s Day has evolved over centuries into the celebration of love we know today. Isn’t it fascinating how history shapes our traditions?

something is correct.
To get started, let’s create a 30-day practice plan to learn the concepts from a book we are interested in reading. Here is how to build a learning plan using ChatGPT.
First, open your web browser and go over to http://www.chatgpt.com. Once you are on the page you will see a place to type in a prompt.
Type the following:
“Extract core principles from [Book] (fill in with a book you would like to read). Create an action-focused summary with the implementation steps. Design a 30day practice plan for key concepts. Include a knowledge application score. Generate real-world test scenarios.”
When you hit the Enter key, ChatGPT will build out the summary and action plan for you based on the book you choose. Now you can follow the plan and learn more about the topics you were interested in exploring.
AI isn’t replacing human intelligence—it’s enhancing it. As leaders, entrepreneurs, and visionaries, we must embrace new technologies to stay ahead. By integrating ChatGPT into our daily routines, we’re not just keeping up with the times— we’re setting the standard for intelligent leadership.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, has always stood for excellence, innovation, and leadership. Alpha Intelligence (AI) isn’t just about artificial intelligence—it’s about our intelligence and how we use it to shape the future. By leveraging ChatGPT, we can elevate ourselves, our fraternity, and our communities.
“So, brothers, let’s embrace the future. Let’s use AI to lead, innovate, and excel.”

Brothers, it is that time of year when we begin to think in the spirit of giving and giving thanks. In that spirit, the Mu Lambda Foundation participates in two key funding programs through which federal and District of Columbia employees can share the gift of the giving.
The Combined Federal Campaign - CFC (https://www.opm.gov/combined-federal-campaign) is a resource that allows U.S. government employees to make regular payroll deductions in support of the Mu Lambda Foundation and its charitable and community service programs.
The DC One Fund (https://os.dc.gov/page/dc-one-fund-each-one-give-one) provides an opportunity for employees of the District of Columbia to do the same. All donations through these funds are tax deductible and deducted from your paycheck regularly. What could be an easier or better way to support the programs you care about?
As open season begins for 2023, you may plan your weekly, biweekly, or monthly contributions to the Mu Lambda Foundation by contributing to charity number 66770 in the CFC, and number 9556 in the DC One Fund.
Let’s make 2023 the best year yet for supporting youth and abused women in the DC area. Thank you for your continued support.

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served.
A member’s duties should be:
1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life.
2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course.
3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein.
4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
