The President’s Message Greetings Brothers Welcome to the start of a new Fraternal Year. The start of our 97th year fulfilling the mission of our dear Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. I look forward to serving you all to the best of my ability. And I welcome your support as we begin a new fraternal year. On so many level and in far too many areas that are impactful to the country and African American lives in particular we start of the 2020-2021 fraternal year facing the same challenges, threats and needs of our community as the start of the 1923-1924, 1953-1954, 1964-1965, 1986 -1987 fraternal years. In that context there is work for us to do intelligently and harmoniously regardless of Covid19, social distancing, bad economy, apathetic citizenry, exhaustion, etc. Let me repeat that “intelligently and harmoniously”. These are serious times, and as Alpha men we excel in the face of serious times. If you think about it there has been no time in our existence where there have not been serious times for serious men to take care of serious business and make serious change. Relativity,

Brother’s Keeper Carlos DeBose

1 year ago, we were all enjoying what we considered to be a normal summer. Travelling internationally, going to events, getting ready for CBC weekend in September and preparing for the return of interpersonal activity for the Fraternal year. We were all happy and free to roam the world we exist in. Ready to continue our dedication to the Fraternity we LOVE in the ways we know best. 1 year ago, police brutality and shooting of unarmed black men was still a problem, 1 year ago, Mu Lambda continued its investment into the Washington DC Community, 1 year ago, we added more names to the list of black men dying as a result of firearms.

7 years ago, the members of Mu Lambda and many chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc,. met on the streets of Washington DC to walk in solidarity for the 50th Anniversary of the “March on Washington”. We made signs, we carried smiles, we took pictures. 7 years ago, Police brutality and shooting of unarmed black men remained a problem. Racism was still rearing its ugly head as we remember February 26, 2012 - A young Trayvon Martin was gunned down trying to escape “The nieghborhood watchman” George Zimmerman. 57 years ago, Like most members of Mu Lambda, I was a figment of my parents imagination. For the blessed few who remember the happenings of 1963 because they were young men, 57 years ago marked a moment in history. In the midst of civil rights movement, the historic March on Washington where our beloved Brother, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic I have a Dream Speech. A dream deferred as September 15, 1963 was met with the 16th St Baptist Church Bombing, where four members of the KKK, planted 19 sticks of Dynamite and killed 4 young black girls. No matter how far back we look, We are in an ongoing struggle for equality. 7 shots in the back of an unarmed Jacob Black several days ago to the cold blooded murder of Breonna Taylor in her bed. Not only are we in an ongoing battle to be seen as equal, but we have a continued fight to be valued as HUMAN BEINGS. My charge this fraternal year, though we are challenged by the pandemic, is to SHOW that “Enough is Enough”. 3 days ago - as the Vice President of the chapter, I attended my second “March on Washington”. I listened attentively to the power of the speeches being delivered and I give one charge to the chapter: WE HAVE TO BAND TOGETHER TO CREATE CHANGE! All minds, All resources, all ideas! Mu Lambda men need to continue to stand up and shake the system that for 400 years has been built to oppress and enslave us.

Community Service Samuel Armstrong

STAND UP Mu Lambda 2020 - 2021, We must continue to be the voice that creates CHANGE or be willing to accept the growing lists, the lynchings, the bombings - it is time NOW, to STAND UP TOGETHER.

MU LAMBDA CHAPTER

TO BE AN ALPHAMAN By Fred H. Woodruff

To be an Alphaman means more than just to wear a pin, It requires intrinsic qualities that are developed deep within, It calls for lasting brotherhood, a word sometimes used in vain, It means an honest devotion, not anticipation of personal gain. Fraternity speaks of brotherly love, that’s something to achieve, It’s more than just a grip of hands, it’s an ideal to conceive. You’re proud to be an Alpha, and share her praises won, Before you inflate yourself with pride, ask yourself, honestly, how much have I done? To realize the wealth of personal satisfaction, from knowing you’ve given your all, To have helped her cause unfalteringly, when you rally to her call. To combine all these qualities, and root them deep within, The product would be an Alphaman, deserving of his pin. So take an honest inventory of your character within, And for every virtue you find missing, try and weave it in. For a man without these virtues isn’t worth a grain of sand. It’s plain to see, it’s more than just a pin, that makes an Alphaman. Baked Parmesan Zucchini Curly Fries

spaced apart, in a single layer on the prepared baking sheets. Coat with cooking spray.

This healthy recipe combines two bar food favorites--fried zucchini and curly fries--into one tempting package. Serve these baked zucchini fries with a simple dipping sauce made with ranch dressing and marinara sauce for a crowd-pleasing appetizer or a side dish for burgers, chicken or pizza. No matter what you serve them with, they’re a fun way to eat more vegetables for kids and adults alike. Source: EatingWell.com, April 2019

Bake until golden and crispy, 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from oven; sprinkle with salt.

Step 3

Prostate Cancer a Family Affair Many of you are aware that I am a prostate cancer survivor. I know some of you have also traveled the journey. I was diagnosed and treated in 2016 and remain cancerfree. Thankfully my doctors caught it early before it had the opportunity to spread. I was vigilant well before my diagnosis with regular checkups mainly because my dad and uncle had previously been diagnosed. As men, and as black men in particular, we tend to wait much longer than we should to see the doctor. We all know brothers who have health challenges but put off making a call to the doctor. But cancer doesn’t wait.

My dad and I share our journey in our new book, Survivors’ Stories, Prostate Cancer, A Family Affair. Get more information on our journey and purchase the book at www.derrickbutts.com and then let’s talk. Speaking Engagements – I would be more than happy to schedule time to talk with your church, Men’s/Health group, and/or organization about being proactive with your prostate health and to share my journey. Please have them email me at info@derrickbutts. com to begin the discussion. Thank you Brothers for your support! Brother Derrick Butts

Alpha

is a life long commitment

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
