Be the Change WELCOME TO ISSUE 6 BE THE CHANGE PART 2 OF WE ARE ONE Change: To make or become different [1]

T

o be the change means to take radical responsibility of your thoughts, choices, actions and life, to no longer blame those around you for your circumstances or experiences. It means to no longer expect people or situations to change, rather you understand that for something to change, you need to be the change, then the world changes around you. Yes, you are that powerful. We no longer need to follow something just because it’s the way it has always been done, especially if it doesn’t work for you or those around you. To evolve as a society and as a human race, we need to grow and change like nature and her seasons. If we don’t grow, we become stagnant as does our life, hopes and dreams. If change is scary for you, you don’t have to do it alone. It actually is less traumatic or scary when you share your process with someone, or to find a group who can support you on your journey and find a community that is also going through similar things as it unites you with a common connector, it also feels good when you aren’t alone in your experience.

Who’s work is it? IS IT THE WORK OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY TO EDUCATE THE REST OF THE WORLD ON THE INEQUALITY, DISCRIMINATION AND INJUSTICE THEY FACE ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS?

I

s it the work of the LGBTQIAP men and women to bring awareness to the rest of the world so they can feel like they belong?

Is it the work of women to prove that they deserve equal pay? Is it the work of People of Colour to feel safe and celebrated in a group ? Is it the work of the Hispanic Community to be respected in the global arena? Why is it that the burden to educate, empower, bring awareness, prove their worth lies on those who are discriminated.

8

| MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT

When you and I talk about equality, bridging gaps, uniting people in our communities let’s first understand our role in perpetuating if not creating the dysfunction. This is a time of great awareness and awakening. You and I need to understand that the problem is not “out there”. We need to realise that we are part of a system that creates disparity. A system that thrives on separation. We may have not been the ones to create this system, but we do receive advantages as a result of being

Unity and Equality can not be achieved in a short period of time. We must be willing to commit to the process.

cis-gender, white passing or an able person. And this comes at a cost to those who do not fit in the above definition. To understand how you and I need to show up to create safe and open spaces requires us to understand that somewhere we are not doing so.

Radzy Chugh

AND If you’re a leader in your community, spending time educating yourself around practices and conversations that support each member is important. If you’re part of a community that does not address these issues, raise your voice.Ask to be seen and heard. Silence is not an option. Thinking, it’s not about me” isn’t helping anything. Believing “change is hard” will never get us to a place of equality. As individuals, we must talk about the disparity so we can bring kinship. We must address the separation so we can build bridges. It’s not about talking something with hashtags or being part of a movement that is #cool. It is about revolutionising your own thinking and doing your bit. Doing your bit can include recognising your privilege, understanding supremacy is intrinsically woven in the system, opening your mind to previously not known biases, and accepting old behaviour as discriminatory. When you recognise your privilege, you recognise the other’s pain and suffering. Being blind to your privilege is being oblivious about the lack of human dignity that is felt by many.

From this place educate yourself, bring awareness, become part of conversations and take responsibility. Remember helpful ways you can support to shift this mindset include donating to causes, signing a petition, using your vote, showing solidarity on and off social media, vowing to keep listening and learning, supporting all business owners and creators, amplify organisers, activists, and people whose work your admire, and finally be a resource for people in the fight if you cannot show up for it in direct ways. Unity and Equality can not be achieved in a short period of time. We must be willing to commit to the process. Of unlearning, understanding, educating, transforming our own selves. And from this place we can begin to create a stir in bigger societal and cultural structures. And if you feel uncomfortable doing this work remember it is a reflection of your privilege for there are millions of people across the globe who are made to feel less than, live in fear and receive hatred for simply being themselves.

Community Creating Through

Volunteerism DID YOU KNOW THAT IN AUSTRALIA, OVER 21% OF WOMEN VOLUNTEER IN SOME CAPACITY? [1] IF YOU ARE A MUM WITH YOUNG KIDS, YOU WILL KNOW THAT THIS IS GENERALLY THE SCHOOL P & C OR SPORTING CLUBS WHERE YOUR CHILDREN ARE INVOLVED. AS YOU GET OLDER, IT IS MORE LIKELY TO BE ONE OF THE MANY ORGANISATIONS OFFERING WELFARE AND SUPPORT WITHIN THE COMMUNITY.

V

oluntarism is the policy or practice of volunteering one’s time or talents for charitable, educational, or other worthwhile activities, especially in one’s community [2] ). As such, volunteerism is based on the individual’s commitment to their community and is at the very heart of “We Are One”. My own experience of volunteerism currently includes being an active surf lifesaver and an advocate for mental health. While I aspire for global peace, world action on climate change, and equality for all cultures and persons, I am aware that lofty goals will never be realised unless we as individuals contribute our capacity to our immediate communities. MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT |

I firmly believe as women; we have an incredible capacity for empathy within community organisations that can be used to promote equality in all areas of human values and cultural differences. As leaders in our volunteer communities, we can develop connections and relationships that support the most vulnerable and create lasting change when needed. As mum’s, we understand the difficulties of keeping everyone in our household happy! By utilising the skills, we gain in our own home as taxi drivers, negotiators, cooks, cleaners, best friends, and role models we can transform communities to work as one. You may be thinking that you can achieve all of this in a paid position of employment, so why would you use your most valuable resource of time to volunteer for Free! And yes, you would be correct as you could do the same thing in your paid employment, and I would go as far as to say that you should be doing that. But volunteering offers something much deeper and much

more precious than being paid to do something. By giving up your own time with no benefit other than to help others is an altruistic behaviour that studies have shown can reduce stress, increase happiness, and improve your overall health. So, look at your current situation and see if there is somewhere in your community that you can volunteer your skill and your knowledge. It is only by individuals standing up and being accountable that volunteer organisations can exist. And it is only through their existence that some of the communities’ most vulnerable people can be supported. During the current pandemic, 65.9% of volunteers have ceased their contribution, mostly women and elderly over 65+ [3]. This further increases the necessity of people returning to volunteer organisations post Covid-19. We are One can easily be created by You Volunteering in your Community Caroline Bellenger Be The Impossible x

Is your nervous

system affecting your business? DO YOU OFTEN WONDER WHY YOUR KIDS IGNORE YOU UNLESS YOU SCREAM AND SHOUT? WHY CAN’T THEY JUST DO IT THE FIRST TIME?

B

eing visible in your business often feels like the same thing, How do you get your ideal clients to take notice of you without being everywhere and doing everything, all the time? When you drill right down to the core, being seen by your kids and your customers is a nervous system issue. Let me explain; When stress – even just a little bit – is your everyday norm, your nervous system’s dial is permanently turned up to ‘survival’ mode. Even though it feels like you are coping, your survival dial is not meant to be on ‘high’ for long periods. The stress response is supposed to be a shortterm solution to escape danger. The extra energy you feel when stressed isn’t meant for ‘hustling’ or pushing harder, but for motivating you to find a safe place so your nervous system

14

| MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT

can discharge the energy and return your body to ‘actual’ normal. ‘Actual’ normal is your unique biological set point where your nervous system functions with ease. If you spend too much time outside your biological normal, your blood pressure increases, your heart beats faster than it should, blood vessels and capillaries constrict, pupils stay dilated longer than is healthy, and adrenaline production goes up. So many internal bodily functions over which you have no control are negatively impacted. Moreover, while you are in this survival state, some important bodily functions are turned off – digestion stops working, you stop producing saliva, higher brain functions are restricted, and your immune function is disrupted. The kind of restorative rest required for deep healing and repair escapes you. Just like babies, who need sleep

to develop and grow, adults also need deep and nourishing sleep to support their health and wellbeing. While all that dysfunction is happening inside you, your external environment is mirroring your bodily distress. Your kids stop listening to you and start getting out of control. They melt down emotionally because they react to the energy around them, and to the energy inside your nervous system that you can’t control, no matter how many deep breaths you take. What most people aren’t aware of is that the biggest impact of prolonged stress is on their ability to relate to others. When we are in a survival state, the physiological and neurological systems that support relational connection go offline. Empathy,

How do you tell if you’re in survival mode?

What most people aren’t aware of is that the biggest impact of prolonged stress is on their ability to relate to others.

compassion, patience and love can’t be spontaneously felt – we have to try to feel them. That’s extra work we have to do that wouldn’t be necessary if we were in a relationally-available nervous system state. For optimum health and longevity, humans are not designed to be disconnected from tribe and family for extended periods. This is not purely psychological; it is inbuilt into human biology – even introverts sometimes need another nervous system to coregulate with to help them feel peaceful, safe, connected to themselves and others, and a sense of belonging. So what’s the cost to our business if our nervous system is not relationallyavailable? If we don’t feel safe and connected, our nervous system is always scanning for threat and preparing for danger. We are in a heightened state of sensitivity, with emotions on a knife-edge. Our reactivity repels people energetically. Nervous systems talk to other nervous systems, and nervous systems in survival mode broadcast the message, ‘Stay away!’. Some nervous systems are a bit sneakier, and they subconsciously hide your offer posts on Facebook by energetically warning prospective clients that if they are not your absolutely ideal person, they shouldn’t bother you. The problem is, your ideal clients also see your ‘don’t bother me’ sign, even if it is not meant for them, and they stay away too.

If your muscles are chronically tense and your body can’t fully relax even when you sleep, these are sure-fire signs of a bracing pattern. Bracing protects us from feeling the overwhelm stuck in our body. The double-bind is that we need to open our nervous system to receive clients and money, but we can’t open it because we would feel all our uncomfortable stuff – and maybe that would be too much. You tell yourself you have to hold it together for your kids and your clients, but if you don’t find a way to relate to what’s happening inside you, that overwhelm is going to leak out and have a toxic impact on your life.

Raquel Dubois

Energy has a way of being reflected in everything anyway. When you feel stressed, your kids misbehave, and your business breaks apart.

Raquel is a nervous system specialist who teaches small groups of overachievers to embody infinite possibilities through their nervous system, and how to expand their capacity to hold more and be more – without doing more.

Unless you find a way to safely open your nervous system, you become more closed off than is comfortable, which eventually leads to dissatisfaction and maybe even depression. When that happens, you lose your capacity to be present, which affects your energetic attractiveness. When everyone around you notices you aren’t fully present, it stirs up their trauma of others not being there for them. To avoid the discomfort of feeling stuff they don’t want to feel, they stop seeing you and you become invisible.

She mentors visionaries, creatives, holistic practitioners and soulfocused entrepreneurs to embody, connect and accept all they are. She facilitates nervous system expansion so they can become a magnet for their soul clients, a powerful healing presence, and an infinite, awakened and creative Being.

Important Takeaways • Your stress physiology determines whether you will be seen especially in online business. • Even if you don’t FEEL stressed if your nervous system is constricted, you will be invisible. • Your external environment will not only mirror your emotions, but it also mirrors your nervous system state – stress inside means your kids and your customers feel tight and reactive when they get near to your energy. • The biggest impact of prolonged stress is on your ability to be available to, and relate to others, and that affects other people’s ability to relate to YOU and to SEE you.

Raquel was chosen by village shamans in Guatemala and Bali to be their initiate and received a spontaneous initiation from the Dalai Lama while in his presence in India. She is a clairsentient intuitive, healer, educator, embodiment coach and somatic psychotherapist. Her life experiences have brought her opportunities to master the perfect blend of magic and science. Using this blend, she facilitates soul-aligned expansion in the nervous system for people who know they have everything inside them but want to reclaim the missing piece.

What’s In A

Name?

A whole lot of harm, actually. By CLARE FOALE

IT WAS 8 PM ON A FRIDAY NIGHT. I WAS LYING ON THE COUCH WHEN A REALISATION STORMED INTO MY AWARENESS: MY BUSINESS NAME WAS CULTURALLY APPROPRIATED.

I

wanted to cry, scream; to hide away from this sudden knowing. Once you’ve seen it, you can’t unsee, you know? I had been actively learning and unlearning about anti-racism and my privilege for about a year. I thought I was doing “well”. I smile wryly at that because – as a white woman – I am going to make mistakes—lots of them.

To aim to not make mistakes is to not go into this work fully; to hold my self to an ideal of perfectionism – which in itself is a characteristic of white supremacy [1]. I raise my eyebrows at that because doing anti-racism work doesn’t make me “good”. It is the baseline of being a decent human. If I hold the hope of this issue - We Are One – and I do. I also take

responsibility for my commitment and action in making this true. That moment of realising that my business name was culturally appropriated was one of those. I had chosen this name – The Zim Zum Connection – three years earlier in good faith. I had built a community, a membership, a brand and a podcast on this name. And now I realised I had made a colossal mistake. The term Zim Zum is a Hebrew word. It wasn’t mine to use, especially in business. To profit from it was Cultural Appropriation 101. I felt scared; sick to the stomach. I scrambled to make excuses, clawing desperately to these two words. I was overwhelmed by the enormity and inconvenience of changing my business name. While also in raging guilt that I had done something harmful to others - even unintentionally and wanting to fix it NOW (a sense of urgency being another characteristic of white supremacy [2]). I felt ashamed and uncomfortable every time I looked at it. As the initial wave of reactions settled, I set about doing better; so much of my journey is guided

16

| MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT

When we can commit to that as a community, the ripples are mighty. My huge thanks and respect to my teachers and mentors including Sharyn Holmes, Eva Glamaris, Mikaela Egan, Louise O’Reilly, Emma Stewart, Marlee Silva, L. Glenise Pike, Omkari Williams, Lisa Dennen-Young and Susanna Barkataki.

Yes, anti-racism unlearning and learning can be challenging and uncomfortable— deeply so. However, it is rewarding and full of possibility and hope. by Maya Angelou’s words: “I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better.” I apologised for my harm. I practised forgiveness and released the name with gratitude. I then waited for a new name to come to me.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land where this was written – the Gadigal people of the Eora nation. They have been on this land since time began. Their connection to land, culture and community is unbroken and unending. They have never ceded sovereignty. I pay my respects to Elders past and present.

Not long after, back on the same couch where this story began, my husband turned to me and said, “Bare feet self-care? “Nahhhh, Salty Hair Self-Care,” I responded, and there it was—my new name. So much more me than before; more whole of course. Yes, anti-racism unlearning and learning can be challenging and uncomfortable—deeply so. However, it is rewarding and full of possibility and hope. So I will keep asking myself, ‘Where can I change? Where can I cause less harm and be more whole’ The power and possibility of that is palpable.

The Endless

Pursuit

Change For

THERE IS A MOMENT IN THE ENDLESS PURSUIT WHERE YOU REALISE THAT THIS OUTWARD-FOCUSED QUEST FOR CHANGE IS NOT SUSTAINABLE.

T

his well-intentioned vision we have to change the world no matter how big, or small is meaningless if we can’t inhabit Heaven wherever we’re standing. Our hunger for change, success and enlightenment has outweighed our yearning to choose the most decadent service and make love to the moment, to penetrate the present. Can change be so decadent? Being the change is igniting your senses and allowing that current to ripple through your body. It’s scaffolding your desire to have an impact in a way that allows you to serve with social impact and not start another endless pursuit of endless activism. For us to be the change, we need profitable businesses, an unwavering code of ethics, action, growth and we 18

need to unleash all of who we are, owning our flaws and imperfections, dropping the unrealistic expectations we have on ourselves. Taking the time to delve into those areas that we hide and don’t fully

show up in, remembering how we do one thing is how we do everything. Tell me your sex life, and I can tell you exactly where your business is at, what’s hot and what’s not. There is a cross-pollination that happens

Renee Mayne and void. As a woman we want to change the world; to show our children they can do anything. We want to be more, so we- do more, give more, try and be more. And we’re exhausted. Yet, when you strip it all back, let it all melt away and melt into the moment you will always remember who you really are, and that is a woman that needs for nothing because in the richness of now we do not yearn for anything.

throughout our consciousness and we need to spend time sitting in the fire with the attachments, the labels and our identity. On the business and personal development junket we’re addicted to the injection of the over-inflated motivation and the endorphins it releases. It feels good! It’s also fueling this subconscious belief that we don’t know enough, we’re doing something, we need to change, and we need to do things differently. And maybe we do, but where are the embers of that fire being fuelled from? Is it from the lens of a unity consciousness Creatrix to serve in the most delicious and profound way? Or is it a pursuit that wants another notch in the belt? A trophy for the mantle and for personal gain? It’s the end of all pursuits. Fulfilment, unity, now. Trouble is we get sidetracked along the way, distractions that take us off course and feeds this empty desire

Then we will remember who we are before we became a byproduct of our life experiences and remember what we came to do, and go about fulfilling that mission. It’s the emergence of pure soul essence. Dropping the fallacy and belief of what a spiritual womxn looks like so we can tap into our knowing.

A woman who has had this remembrance will inhabit Heaven wherever she happens to be standing. The Temple of Exploration Eros, Permission, Embodiment & Expansion.

… And we do know.

So where to now? We let the richness of our blood pulsate throughout all generations. We honour, remember, respect cultures and people. We remember who we were before we set out to conquer and exploit, Before capitalism and colonialism. We remember we were Warriors, Queens and Gods. Independent of spirit. The World Needs More...

of YOU

I GET TO INTERVIEW THE MOST FASCINATING PEOPLE, AND I’VE FOUND OVER THE YEARS THAT ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS GUIDES YOU TO THE BEST STORY TO TELL. AS A STORYTELLING COACH, I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT EVERYONE HAS A STORY THAT IS POWERFUL... A STORY THAT, IF TOLD, CAN HELP SOMEONE ELSE.

I

remember, six years ago, sitting in my first session of a grief recovery group, just a small group of women, each of us having experienced some sort of loss. When my turn rolled around, I intricately described the traumas I’d experienced earlier that summer: My husband had violently thrown me out of my own house. A few days later, I made the trip from Texas, where I lived, to my hometown in Tennessee, for comfort, to get my head straight, and to figure out how to move forward. I walked through the gate at the airport and collapsed into a sobbing puddle of relief in my father’s arms, only to find out that while I was in the air, my mother

20

| MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT

had been admitted to the hospital, where ten days later she died. Two weeks after that, I travelled again to Tennessee to bury my maternal grandmother, whose grief of losing her oldest child had landed her in a coma. As the details of my story unfolded, I watched the jaws of my fellow peace-seekers creep closer and closer to the floor in disbelief. My suspicions were correct. The nightmare I’d been living over the 90-days days was indeed horrific beyond belief. But the therapist’s introduction was not lost on me, “no one’s loss is greater than another’s” and I believe that that is true, too, of our stories. Maybe you don’t have a gigantic traumatic experience to talk about, but someone out there needs to hear your story. I think of my aunt who, years ago, taught first grade. I was pretty young at the time, but I remember her telling the funniest stories about her students and classroom happenings. Stories like hers could be just the antidote a young teacher needs to encourage her to find the bright spots in the challenging days. Finding your story comes down to asking yourself the right questions and following your powerful intuition. As Mumpreneurs, asking ourselves the right questions is typically the last thing on our minds. We’ve got questions for the kids, for our clients, for our partners, but digging down into our souls, well that often takes a back seat.

Vulnerably sharing something hard to talk about, or embarrassing, or that doesn’t seem that important to you, strikes up that “me too” feeling in someone else, and all of a sudden we are not alone. When I have a client who doesn’t know where to begin, I like to start with this exercise: Make a list of 30 things (good or bad) that you believe about yourself. For each belief, identify where and when you picked it up. Your age? The source (a specific experience, a parent, a sibling)? On that page are the beginnings of 30 stories, because you took time to reflect, to appreciate where you’ve been and where you are going. Someone out there needs to realise that they also hold that limiting belief, or to hear about the moment you adopted that positive belief that changed your life. Sharing your truth not only fosters transformation, but it creates a powerful connection between us. Vulnerably sharing something hard to talk about, or embarrassing, or that doesn’t seem that important to you, strikes up that “me too” feeling in someone else, and all of a sudden we are not alone. All of a sudden, we are in this together. There is your power, lovely, in your story.

Our sisterhood is tight, and the eternal respect and love for mum for the life she has given me is endless. Would I be here without them? I wouldn’t want to be! I became a mum at the age of 19, I had a beautiful daughter

We embrace being women in business and leadership and encourage wearing our emotions on our sleeves and we never wear a tie. and married her dad when I was 22. We had an amazing son and were together for nearly 20 years. Within that time I knew I was living a lie and I decided being true to myself was better than the alternative of living a lie and continuing to experience depression because of it.

will be later” I kindly let him know, it’s only family here. There was my interracial parents, my partner (now wife), our children, their dad and his 20-year-old girlfriend. We laughed as we titled ourselves “The real Modern Family” but it’s what we are and wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Nice tatt” was the first thing I typed to Jessie using an online lesbian dating app. We were so close so quick. I was 35, deep inside the closet and had met the love of my life yet she could only be my best friend. I was a lesbian and my biggest fear was coming out to the kids; what if they didn’t want anything to do with me? What if they up and leave to live with their dad? But what if I kept living a lie, and it took me down the black dog road (which I knew it would) and they wouldn’t have a mum at all?

Earlier this year Jessie and I made our relationship official and were blessed to have our wedding on 29th of February (the leap day), it was filled with a bridal party of 17 adults and 10 kids!

Sitting on a couch with my daughter as we were both reading one day, I knew it was time to tell her the truth, I held my breath and asked my daughter if she knew about my girlfriend Jessie and I? She nodded yes. I asked her if she was ok with us? Again she nodded and added a non-committal sound ‘mmm’ and gave a small shrug. So I asked her if she would like scrambled eggs? She finally looked up with a smile and says yes please mum. I breathed a sigh of relief. It was going to be ok.

When I finally came out my whole life changed, I got married and started a business that I have been in for over two years and it has been such an amazing roller coaster! It all started in 2007 when I met the most generous natured and intelligent woman Kathie, a single mum of 3. She gave me a foot in the door with employment services, where along the way I became a qualified drug and alcohol worker and assisted people who were homeless, drugaffected or needed emergency services.

Telling my son was so much easier when I told him about my girlfriend, he smiled at me and asked if that meant I was a lesbian? I cried, laughed and hugged him so tight replying “yes, yes mate it does”. He then proudly introduced me to his friends as his mum, the lesbian.

Kath and I quickly became best friends and shared a career pathway through different employers, we were even fired on the same day. We both moved into disability services, which is where I found my niche. I knew this is where I wanted to build my career. We then met Elle who was in the same profession as us, and the 3 of us became close friends. Over time, we experienced continuous business proposal rejections from our employer and it took its toll on all of us. So, Elle, Kath and I, we decided to create our own business, together!

It’s funny how society has a certain image of what a family should look like. At my daughter’s graduation in 2015, the photographer said “Its just family photos, for now, friends

Liberty Disability Services was born, and we have never looked back. We started with our small caseloads, helping people who have NDIS plans. Eventually, we were so busy we

This process has taught me so much about the feminine and the lack of its presence in our largely mechanized world. What begins as a soft opening inside a single woman ripples out in all directions to start to bring individuals, families, groups and communities towards a way of being that can listen to the unknown knowing, and measure productivity by how much we were able to open and hold, not just produce and sell. I

was for most of my life up until I was nearly thirty, stuck in a sort of societal spell, believing I could never be better than where I came from, which was a poor, abusive and addiction home. And because I was a female, I had rules and expectations to abide by so I would grow up being a ‘good’ girl to become a ‘good woman, employee, wife and mother. Never shine too bright, be too loud, too happy, too sexy, too funny or too smart and on the list goes. Stay in your box; do what a girl/ woman should do, and so I did. I found a man, got a good job, brought a house, got married and had kids. So shouldn’t I have felt something other than resentment, anger, guilt and sadness for my life? I seemed to have what every ‘good’ woman wanted, didn’t I? I did what was expected of me, so why was I so unhappy, and why did I feel ashamed to share my unhappiness with anyone else? So, I suppressed my feelings and did the same thing day in, day out. That is until we brought our first business in 2013, which was the first significant change towards living a different life however it wasn’t until our youngest daughter Brooklyn

arrived in 2014 that my change started to take place. Brook was born with a dual-chamber kidney and two ureters, where one was plugged into the bladder incorrectly. This led to Brook having a severe kidney infection where she experienced fibril convulsions and stopped breathing. It was a traumatic experience that would forever impact me. Thankfully she recovered though from that moment on, I was a mess. Yet something deep within me had been awoken. Something that each woman has yet most likely has been ignored until circumstances ignites it awake. Some call it intuition, gut feeling or mother’s instinct. What also awoke in me is was I like to call mama lion energy. I became fierce with my daughter and her health. I was ruthless and singleminded with what I was doing. I had never felt this fire or determination before; it led me to go against the doctors prescribed recommendations and medication and to seek out alternative and holistic professionals. I stood up against my husband, who was following what others were saying rather than finding out the truth for himself. I empowered myself with knowledge and would spend hundreds of hours researching ways to heal my daughter naturally. I became so consumed with my daughter’s health and healing that others seemed to no longer exist outside of the bubble of Brook and I. That meant my husband and two other children where put on the sideline. I knew they were safe and well, though the guilt and shame still grew, I wasn’t being the ‘good’ wife or mother. Even though I had this mama lion energy when it came to daughters healing journey, it was the everyday stress that took it’s toll. I was always anxious; I experienced panic attacks,

Speaking at WEF India 2019 Speaking at WEF India 2019 anxiety and on top of that postnatal depression. I lost weight, I hardly slept, and when I woke up it would be in a fright, and I would go straight to Brook and check her and her temperature in case she was getting another infection, which she was continually getting. After 12 months and going through multiple modalities, Brook was on her way to good health. She had an operation at 12months old and she has never looked back. It wasn’t until she was well that I fell apart. It was messy and hard. I was in a dark place, and for what seemed like the thousandth time, I was on the floor of my kitchen a mess of tears, fear, guilt and shame of the woman that I had become. Then as it is with most breakdowns came the breakthrough that led

I started to believe what I felt inside and started living my truth which has and will be a continual journey and evolution.

me on a journey of self-love, selfdiscovery and self-empowerment. It wasn’t smooth sailing, and it felt that with as many steps forward I was making, there would be just as many sets backs. I worked in our business, yet I needed more. I went back to work as a civil draftsperson, and that lasted all of two months. Nothing felt right, I had more to give and so I spiralled down again and something had to give. Then after going to a conscious event, I started to truly see how women have unrealistic expectations to be the perfect woman, wife, and

mother placed upon them. That many try to live up to unspoken expectations of how we should look and act and wear a mask (that being put on a happy facade) to hide the truth. In essence, to live a fake life for the sake of others comfortability. That is when I deepened my healing and growth. I focused on healing the relationship with myself and my feminity. I started to believe what I felt inside and started living my truth which has and will be a continual journey and evolution. Because I chose to take responsibility for my life, health, choices, actions and circumstances I have done and achieved things I never once thought possible. Since 2015, I have started, stopped and changed multiple businesses. I am a certified wellness coach; I have multiple energy healing and teaching modalities under my belt. I have invested in my personal and professional development non-stop. I have created a range of affirmation activated skincare, as well as online courses, workshops, women’s events and even, travelled to different countries to speak. Earlier this year I was engaged to be a facilitator at the Ultimate Girls Week Away (Created by Liesel Albrecht) with Elizabeth Gilbert

and next year it will be alongside Gabrielle Berstein and Sark. I have spoken on a panel with Lisa Messenger from Collective Hub. I was a guest speaker in the multi-award winning spiritual documentary Orenda. My dream of being a paid speaker is now my reality. I created this magazine. I opened a publishing house with the support of publishing veteran Ocean Reeve Publishing and have released my first co-author book. I help other businesses with business development, and I am opening my course on teaching other empowered women how to share their message on a bigger scale while leveraging and creating multiple income streams using the platform of digital Magazines. I am also working with a singing artist on getting the song that I wrote recorded. Who would have thought?! My life is never dull, and even though it sounds like I am doing a lot, I have outsourced a lot too, so I find time to ride my horses, be out in nature, go away on holidays with my family or myself. I never knew life could be like this, and the only reason it changed was that I did.

YOUR

STEP GUIDE

TO BECOMING A PLEASURE ACTIVIST I SPEND MY DAYS TALKING TO MUMS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE ABOUT ALL THINGS SEX, STRESS AND SELF-CARE. WE ALL SHARE MANY SIMILARITIES WHEN IT COMES TO THE UNHELPFUL AND LIMITING BELIEFS ABOUT OUR SEXUALITY, OUR DESIRES, OUR RELATIONSHIP TO PLEASURE, OUR BODIES AND THE STRESSES AND WORRIES THAT SEEM TO TAKE US AWAY FROM PLEASURE.

S

ure, we’re united in our pain points – “ I don’t have time, I’m not loving my body right now, I feel shy and shameful around my expression, I just don’t feel super up for it, I’m just so tired…there are more important things in the world right now” but we’re also united in our bodies unique ability to access powerful and healing states of pleasure and sensuality. Just like anyone can learn to ride a bike or bake a delicious chocolate cake – It takes time and practise to perfect. You might have to look up a recipe and try a few different ones before you land on your favourite. But what if I told you that anyone can learn somatic tools to return our bodies to inner harmony and a grounded sense of calm through sex and pleasure? And what if I told you that its from this place of awakened pleasure

28

| MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT

that we can allow healing, cultivate positive change and be inspired and empowered members of our community? That’s right. Anyone can build neural wiring for pleasure, sensuality and shameless sexual expression, and although this statement goes against the solid conditioning we’ve been receiving for decades - I’m here to tell you that more pleasure is the very thing this world needs right now. The first step is often the hardest – we have to choose it. I’ve put together this 5 step guide to help you start practising radical pleasure activism. When we are awake to our desires and pleasure and turned on by life we’re much more likely to be able to speak out about what is important to us, take powerful soul lead action, be in service as leaders inside of issues of

social justice and positive change for our communities.

1- CHOOSE IT Make the bold declaration that this part of you deserves some love and attention! Choose to allow moments of pleasure and sensuality during the most mundane moments of your day and watch your relationship to sensation transform.

2- Name the beliefs that may be keeping you stuck Was there a sentence you used to hear form a parent or an ex that’s really stuck with you? Perhaps you have beliefs about how your body should look, or you add pressure on yourself to show up a certain way inside your relationship? Its just not important… Jot down a list of all the beliefs that you’re ready to release. Seeing them written out can often create the space needed in order to replace them with some more empowered ones!

3- Use Breath and Movement & Sound There are many somatic ( meaning of and through the body) tools that us humans can use to come into states of pleasure and calm. Breath, movement and sound are a great first stop. First, notice where you’re breathing from. Can you inhale a little more deeply? Perhaps Into your belly and pelvis? When you release can you slow it right down and enjoy the nourishment that is your breath? Move to music. Pick a new song each day and commit to moving your body. The gift of dance and music is such an incredible tool for freeing up sexual expression. DO it!

4- Calve out time for yourself I know – this one feels tricky at times. But the reality is we just cannot be in constant

Anyone can build neural wiring for pleasure, sensuality and shameless sexual expression...

service to the greater good and out communities without taking the time to love and nourish ourselves. Can you commit to 1hr a week when you create the space to be with your body? Breathe, selfmassage, move, dance, pamper yourself – this is a critical step towards allowing more pleasure into all areas of your life and getting more contact with what you truly desire.

5- Set sexy goals and share them with lover or friends Perhaps you’d like to set a goal around connecting with a partner more often? With self more often? Maybe you’d like to learn how to increase your orgasmic potential, or create more sensation in areas of your body that have been ignored a bit. Is there certain touch you’d like to give and receive, perhaps you’d like to learn to communicate your needs with more ease and confidence. No matter what it is, try setting some goals for yourself. This simple act of intention setting and choosing that which you really want is a super powerful step in the right direction. Practising these 5 foundational pieces will have you well on your

way to allowing pleasure to lead, connect, enliven and activate all that is possible inside of our human collective potential. Money Mindset

Advice with DENISE DUFFIELD-THOMAS

What are your thoughts or guidance when you need a quick intake of money - short term gain? Does that take away from where our focus should be - sustainable long term goals? Does the short term quick fix impact the long term goals? – Joy Fairhill

H

i Joy - one thing I know about women and money is that we can overcomplicate it to the point of self-sabotage and get stuck in analysis paralysis.

You can have long term money goals. You can have daily money goals. We’re all motivated by different things. And let’s face it - some times you do need an injection of cash - maybe a dream house suddenly

actively working on - my monthly income goal or short term desires (3-6 months). The Next column (618 months) are desires that aren’t urgent; however, I can see them on the horizon. The Later column is all those “one-day” goals that I’m parking for the future. And then something inevitably comes up - something I didn’t even know I had desired, for example, a gorgeous mint green 1954 Chevy truck. Do I ignore it because it wasn’t on my list? No - I follow the desire and take action. I sent out some emails, sold some courses, and bought the truck. Give yourself permission to desire what you want. Money flows where attention goes.

comes on the market, or you get an unexpected tax bill. If money is just a tool - doesn’t it make sense that we can attract it when we desire it? You can’t use up your manifesting mojo. Just follow your desires. I like to separate my goals into three categories - now, next and later. The Now column is everything I’m

HOW TO BRING IT ALL TOGETHER: Heat ghee or coconut oil in a large saucepan on medium heat until seeds begin to pop. Add remaining dry spices and cook for 5 minutes.

Add drained rice, mung beans and salt, stir through.

Anika Wulff

NOTE: Mung beans can vary by brand. It is a good idea to keep an eye on the cooking, adding more liquid if needed, until lentils are soft and cooked. You do not want the dish to be soupy when transferring to the casserole dish.

Her vision for Spring Lakes Farm has always been two-fold – one, to supply affordable organic produce and other gut-lovin’ products at farmer’s markets and two, to open the farmgate to host women’s retreats, to educate on nourishment and simplicity, plus provide valuable connection. She deeply believes that being healthy and nourished does not have to be hard. In fact, it should be easy. We just have to slow down enough to listen to our body’s cues and to trust ourselves to interpret what we hear and feel.

In a small bowl/jug mix all the dressing ingredients together.

Mothers a r e a p ow e r f ul

gift to humanity I KNOW, AMAZING ENTREPRENEUR, CAPABLE AND INTELLIGENT BUSINESSWOMAN, THAT MOTHERHOOD DOES NOT DEFINE YOU, IT IS A PART OF YOUR UNIQUE AND LAYERED MAKE UP. LET’S TAKE A MOMENT TO LOOK AT THIS VERY POWERFUL PART OF YOU.

O

ur mothering collectively determines what the world becomes. Together we are raising the future, shaping the world view, values and attitudes of the next generation. Imagine a generation prepared to risk it all; to stand up for what’s right and be the cause agents of the change they know is possible. A generation that stand up speak out, and demand change and expect more. I believe in the power of every mother to raise these revolutionary world changers. I believe we do it not by complicated extracurricular schedules or by adding any ‘thing’ to our plate. I believe you will raise revolutionary world changers by living an authentic life in full alignment with your values.

You know the world is broken. You know racism, discrimination, poverty, domestic violence - an endless list of injustices that exist in your community. Your soul calls you to action, your head searches to answer that call. Should I share a post, join a protest, volunteer? This is weighty. You might feel a responsibility to effect long-reaching change. In watching you search out answers, your children are gleaning. They don’t need to see you get it right straight away, your tenacity and dedication to finding solutions are where the power lies for your kids, in watching your journey. They see you living your life authentically, aligned to your beliefs and walking out your values, even through challenging terrain. They see the truth of what you are working

The better world you are fighting for and slowly carving out in your areas of influence will be the better world they expect to walk in. 32

| MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT

and fighting for; they will inherit your conviction, the values you’re working to uphold are shaping who they become. The injustice you’re striving to correct will become intolerable to them too. The better world you are fighting for and slowly carving out in your areas of influence will be the better world they expect to walk in. Then you will find you are raising children who don’t just value inclusiveness; they fight for it. Children who don’t just value equality but call out and challenge

prejudice; who don’t just “stick up for the little guy”, rather they demand more from the big players. Imagine a generation prepared to risk it all to stand up for what’s right and be the cause agents of the change they know is possible because they saw it. They saw the most influential woman in their lives live this, take risks for this, fight and work for this. When they stand up, they are standing on your shoulders; you show them today what was possible for their tomorrow.

I believe you will raise revolutionary world changers by living an authentic life in full alignment with your values.

I often wonder what will define our children’s generation. What values will our children glean from the way we operate our businesses, the way we treat others, the way we show up in the world? Global events and the influences of the world are shaping us and our children. What if we consciously harnessed the power of our motherhood? What if we were the generation of mums who purposefully raised children to believe they can and should do what is right, no matter the cost? What if we could be the mothers who raise a generation to use their freedom to right injustices? To bring freedom to those who are captive? And to stand up to oppressors?. The mothers who raised a generation that forever changes the world. What a gift to humanity those mothers would be; Imagine the world we might create?.

Stress

The Impact On Libido And Relationships STRESS IS AN UNAVOIDABLE PART OF OUR LIFE, WE FACE VARIOUS PROBLEMS AND OBSTACLES EVERY DAY, AND THAT’S OK. IN SMALL DOSES, STRESS IS HEALTHY FOR US, AND CAN HELP US FACE DAILY CHALLENGES AND ACCOMPLISH TASKS MORE EFFICIENTLY. IT CAN EVEN BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM.

H

owever, worrying too much and being overwhelmed by stress can impact not only your mood but your sex life, lead to low libido and wreak havoc on your relationship.

Chronic Stress and Low Libido When you face a stressor, the body reacts to it and goes through several changes preparing you to run away

34

or face and fight the problem. This can lead you to experience high blood pressure, increased heart rate, and breathing rate which can lead to feelings like anxiety. Such a process is more known as the fight or flight response. But what’s important about such a stress response is that it triggers the

release of stress hormones, such as cortisol and epinephrine, which in high levels can affect your sex hormones leading to low libido. This happens because the building blocks used for cortisol productions are the same as for sex hormone productions. Therefore, if the stress is ongoing for an extended period of time, it can reduce testosterone production, which can lead to decreased sex drive in both men and women. Note: Both men and women can experience low libido or reduced sexual desire caused by long-lasting stress symptoms, mental health issues, a hormone deficiency, or mental health concerns. The research has found that when women are exposed to constant daily stressors, they are likely to have decreased sex drive and lower levels of sexual satisfaction. If you are feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and having trouble sleeping there is a good chance you will have a low low libido, and this can affect the quality of your relationships. To know if this is the underlying cause I think you should “test and not guess” when it comes to hormones. You can do a comprehensive blood test for the sex hormones but the best way to assess adrenal function and the sex hormones is with the DUTCH hormone test.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and having trouble sleeping there is a good chance you will have a low low libido... The DUTCH test is a special urine test to assess hormone health and that can be done at home, so no need to visit a lab which is important at the moment with social distancing and keeping pathology labs free for essential services.

Lifestyle Changes to Regain Sexual Desire PRACTICE STRESS MANAGEMENT Stress management is vital for everyone. Effective relaxation techniques help support your emotional and mental health and prevent hormonal disturbances and problems with sex drive. You can improve the way you respond to stress by trying some stress management techniques such as: • • • • •

Yoga and meditation Guided imagery Progressive muscle relaxation Breathing exercises Spending time in nature

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT) Cognitive behavioral therapy helps change your behavior and the way you think about certain things, which makes it an effective tool for stress

management and overcoming some obstacles in your life. When you are going through the hard times in relationships and experience sexual problems, you’re likely to start overthinking and stressing yourself out about every trifle. By focusing on some negativity and complaining, you just prevent yourself from taking important steps to recharge your sexual energy, improve your wellbeing and relationship with your partner. CBT may help you switch your beliefs, increase self-acceptance, and present moment awareness, and keep you motivated on the way to the positive lifestyle changes that will help your relationship thrive. PRACTICE SELF-CARE

within your relationship. Also, your decreased sex desire may lead to a lack of sex interest from both sides. That is why it is vital to talk to your partner and work through relationship problems including low libido together. Finally, if you’re going through the treatment, trying hard to improve your lifestyle but the conflicts with your partner still occur, then you might need some help from a therapist or relationship counselor.

3 Key Takeaways on Dealing with Low Libido and Stress 1. Consult a doctor or naturopath who is experienced in doing comprehensive sex and adrenal hormone testing. 2. Make healthy lifestyle changes to enhance your wellbeing and improve the health of your relationship. 3. Work through issues like low libido together with your partner.

Make sure to take some time for a little self-care. Get rid of bad habits like smoking and drinking, follow a nutritious diet, and try to establish healthy sleep habits. By taking care of yourself you’ll build confidence and will show that you’re worthy of affection. TALK TO YOUR PARTNER Try to examine whether your relationship is healthy. The low libido can be caused not by the stress at work but by regular conflicts

M

It was a far cry from my home town of Perth, Australia and a place I had always dreamed about visiting but never thought it would ever happen. Fast forward to 2013, where I was living in Sydney and working in a very stressful corporate banking environment which took its toll on my health. I had reached my enough is enough moment and decided I

needed to change my life, and I was ready to meet my soul mate. I decided that my destiny wasn’t set for staying in Australia living a life that wasn’t aligned with me and out of nowhere I decided that it was time to plan my exit strategy, but where to? Italy was my obvious choice. After living in London for twelve years, I had a UK passport, so the transition was super easy from that part. I arrived in Italy in December 2014 and was convinced I had made the right decision to move. What I never

took into consideration, though, was how hard it could be to learn a new language, culture, way of life and different way of thinking. It hasn’t been easy, I tell you. Italy is a country famous for its bureaucracy, chaos and disorganization. A polar opposite from what I was used to in Australia and the UK. I arrived here with a passion and determination to create the life I had imagined for myself—a life where I could explore and marvel at the wonder that this beautiful country has to offer. I was living in the far north of Italy in a town called Bolzano, on the border of Austria. A stunningly beautiful town but it felt too “German” for me, and I missed the beach, so I moved down to the far south to Puglia in 2017. Not long after I had moved to a little seaside town called Monopoli,

You cannot come to a completely different country and expect to change centuries-old traditions – trust me.

I encountered my soul mate. He was everything I had written down on a list in Sydney so many years ago and more; dark hair, blue eyes, spoke three languages and had lived all around the world. Wowza. I had manifested my soul mate. I couldn’t believe it! Not long after we met I fell pregnant with our first son, a gorgeous curly blonde-haired blue-eyed boy called Lorenzo, and we now have his little brother due this October this year. I have created my own consultancy company assisting overseas investors in purchasing their dream property in Italy and creating their own slice of La Dolce Vita like I have mine. It hasn’t been all roses though, I have had to work hard, and fight to pave my way with my career here while juggling motherhood. I have gone through periods of feeling overwhelmed, exploited and severely

underpaid for the skillset I possess but if you have enough grit and determination and above all an open mind to see through the obstacles and push through, it is most certainly rewarding. One thing that has really stood out for me is the difference in mindset and outlook on life. It used to bother me, but now I don’t try and change it. You cannot come to a completely different country and expect to change centuries-old traditions – trust me. I learn that lesson a lot in my household! But it is always a learning experience, and probably one that I will continue learning as long as I live here.

Life is too short to be doing anything that is not aligned with your passions. Take that chance to change your life; you will never be disappointed.

Forgiving

Unforgivable the

LET ME TELL YOU A STORY; I RECENTLY HAD A SESSION WITH A CLIENT. SHE WAS STUCK IN A PARTICULAR AREA OF HER LIFE – AS MANY OF US ARE – BECAUSE OF SOMETHING THAT HAD HAPPENED MANY, MANY YEARS AGO AND WAS BLOCKING HER FROM MOVING FORWARD.

W

something I remember I used to say to myself and then continue in my life in ignorant bliss. It didn’t affect me because I’m one of the lucky ones and there’s a good chance you were too.

What a great question. How the hell do you forgive the horrors that happen in the world and people’s personal lives? Have you ever thought ‘It’s not my life, I can’t do anything about it?’ I know it was

I responded with, ‘Well, I can’t answer that question, however, let us consider the consequences of not forgiving and letting it go?’ Depending on the severity of the trauma, it can be subjecting ourselves to a lifetime of misery, pain and suffering because someone wrongfully proved to you that you are unworthy of love. Something this beautiful soul had experienced long

hat this woman experienced happened when she was at the innocent age of 2, a whole lifetime ago! The particular emotion that was not acknowledged was anger – anger that was manifesting in her life as a grown woman. When I asked her if she was ready to forgive, she responded ‘How can you forgive the unforgivable?’

enough and was ready to let go of! I’m so grateful I got to be a part of her healing – in just one session, she removed the blocks to love and felt free again! “Forgiveness is like setting a prisoner free, and realising you were the prisoner.” Forgiveness in the truest sense of the word is not about condoning what happened or ‘letting them get away with it’ or pretending like everything is ok and let’s just move on. Forgiveness is taking 100% responsibility for the feelings you have held onto for so long. It’s

realising that holding onto those hot coals of anger, resentment and bitterness inevitably rob you of the love and connection that are your basic human needs, for the rest of your life. It’s understanding that the feelings you feel are yours and yours alone. Only you can heal them. Let me give you some tips on how you get there.

Awareness Bring your awareness to when you feel a surge of toxic emotion course through your body, do you focus on what or who is triggering you and fall into the blame game? That moment is the focal point for healing. You have to consciously choose to love the situation that is robbing you of your peace of mind, whatever it is.

you hate about yourself or what has happened to you, you allow a higher power to shine through; inspiration now becomes your ally. You become aware of the melodramatic story, keeping you stuck in cycles of pain, and you move into freedom. Freedom to feel what you feel. Freedom to express yourself fully in any given moment. Freedom to connect to everyone and everything. Freedom to give and receive love joyfully because love is all there is and that is what you are!

Born I Was

for this shit! THERE HAVE BEEN MANY TIMES OVER THE PAST 12 YEARS THAT I HAVE QUESTIONED MY PATH AS A PSYCHIC, MEDIUM AND TEACHER, IT’S NOT EXACTLY A CONVENTIONAL CAREER, AND I’VE CERTAINLY HAD TO BUILD UP A LOT OF TRUST IN WHAT I DO.

I

am so blessed to have trained with well-known mediums from around the world and to continuously build upon my natural mediumistic abilities. Over a decade of training has given me a solid footing in what can sometimes be a challenging path to follow. However, 2020 has been the year where the magnitude of what I do, and the impact it has on others, has truly sunk in. What an honour to bring healing to people when they struggle, and an honour to connect with Spirit who so compassionately

walk unseen by our side, as we navigate these challenging times. 2020 will certainly go down as a year to remember, where so much came to light, where so many women stepped into their power and a year where the world changed forever. Back in March, I was taking part in one of the last festivals the weekend before Australia went into lockdown for the global pandemic of Covid-19. I was honoured to be doing audience readings at Seven Sisters Festival in Mount Martha, Victoria, Australia and connected with some incredibly inspiring women throughout the festival. I was asked to teach a workshop in psychic and mediumship development the following day with over 200 women in attendance. It was a space of inspiration and upliftment, teaching methods to connect with each other, and with Spirit. While all hell was breaking loose in the outside world, we were in this incredible place of love and unity, holding space and creating a bubble of light that would carry us for many months to come. I spoke with many women over the course of the weekend who told me how blown away by how they were able to connect in my workshop, and the information they were able to connect with for themselves, and each other. It is a theme that I have seen emerge more strongly over the last five months as I’ve had an increase in women wanting to learn

more about psychic and mediumship development through the groups that I teach. I’ve seen some of my students step up and into their power very quickly. My methods are simple yet effective. We all possess the ability to tap into a power beyond ourselves and use it for the greater good. Here are three simple steps to get you started:

Be yourself You are unique, and your gifts and abilities are unique.

Understanding perception How one person perceives psychic information or information from spirit is different from the next person. We all see the world through a different lens, understanding this deepens our trust in our intuitive abilities.

Differentiate Differentiate what is your mind chatter, and what is spirit chatter, the methods I teach make this easy to understand.

There is no doubt that 2020 is a year of major spiritual awakening for the planet and us all. It is my honour to be assisting humanity as we awaken to the truth of who we really are, divine spiritual beings with unlimited spiritual potential. It is my honour to guide and inspire people to connect with themselves, each other and Spirit through my work. I was born for this shit!

Lindie Gunston Lindie Gunston is a psychic, medium and teacher based in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. From an early age Lindie was able to sense spirit, however growing up in conservative South Africa with a father who was a minister, these spiritual experiences were passed off as evil. It wasn’t until her early 20’s that things really started to make sense, and in her early 30’s Lindie actively started developing her psychic and mediumistic abilities after experiencing the loss of her brother to cancer. Lindie decided early on that if this was a path she was to follow, then she was going to throw her entire heart and soul into it. Lindie is passionate about connecting ethically with her clients and students, inspiring them to reach for the stars in all they do. Lindie teaches psychic and mediumship development both online and in person, conducts private readings, group bookings, and audience readings worldwide.

Homeschooling

Reality

Bites I HAD A DREAM THAT WE WOULD ONE DAY TRAVERSE OUR GREAT NATION FOR 12 MONTHS, LEARNING ITS SECRETS NOT ONLY FROM THE LAND AND THE PEOPLE, BUT ALSO FROM THE CAREFULLY CURATED BUNCH OF BOOKS THAT I’D STASHED IN OUR VAN. ME, THE ALMIGHTY MUMMA-TEACHER, READY TO BE MY BEST SELF.

M

y firm but fair alter-ego rising to the challenge, my impressive academics finally appreciated, virtuous patience infusing my being as I impart wisdom upon my offspring with a wave of my pen. And they, eager, eyes wide, minds active, patient, thirsting for knowledge, amazed at my smarts, attentive. We would relish in each other’s company, creating, writing, exploring, discovering. We would calmly complete our daily schedule in just hours, unable to contain our enthusiasm, and siblings would be kind, encouraging, assisting. Then Coronavirus arrived. I was forced into homeschooling, 42

unprepared, unwilling, and reality bit - hard. I must say, that despite knowing I had a challenge on my hands (2 kids, 2 different schools, 2 completely different schedules and sets of expectations…plus a business to run, a husband still at work 12 hours per day and 7 animals to look after!) I began the homeschooling term with wide-eyed enthusiasm. Miss 12 was a breeze. Focused, organised, connected. To be fair, her school had remote learning completely sussed and her week was full to the brim. Master 9? The complete opposite. He learns by doing, not sitting, had just begun at a new school this year so hadn’t had much

time to make connections, and his school offered minimal guidance and accountability. I knew where my time was needed. I created the most epic daily schedule - colour-coded, with wellplanned brain breaks, perfectly ruled lines, and variety of subject matter. Lunch and morning tea were timed perfectly with Miss 12’s so there would be sibling playtime. It was a masterpiece of ingenuity, given the scant guidelines I had to work with, and I was pretty chuffed, thinking I’d nailed the

brief, hoping desperately it would be adopted enthusiastically.

I wondered why I cared so much when he seemingly cared so little. Then I realised just that….that he is still, so little.

Week one came and went with only the odd grumble about wanting to see friends and finish early (me not him!) Mostly we stuck to the plan, savored the extra time to play, enjoyed science experiments outside and relished slowly eaten cooked lunches. Big tick. Let’s hope it continues. Week two arrived and resistance began to roar. “I hate writing” (poison to my soul given I’m a writing coach!), “I’m bored with timestables” (fair call, me too, let’s count groups of lollies), “You’re my Mum, not my teacher, you can’t tell me what to learn” (daggers…). And it just got harder and harder. I insisted he stick to the plan. Probably my first mistake. I used gaming time with friends as a bargaining tool – my second mistake. I got frustrated and said things like “why don’t you GET this, it’s so easy?” – my worst mistake yet. We fought. We made up. We yelled. We cuddled. We cried. We laughed. We eventually joined forces in our stance against the futility of some tasks and took to the streets on our bikes when it got too hard. By week 6 I limply insisted on doing the maths, reading and writing tasks - the rest could die a quiet death. But it broke my heart every day that he didn’t want to follow the plan, that

my lifelong love of learning wasn’t evident in him… even though I knew this wasn’t a true representation of his ability, given the completely wonky situation. I cursed the world for putting me in a position where I argued with my baby over the benefits of learning African drumming rhythms. I wept quietly at night, trying to believe I was doing my best, even though I’d said hurtful and childish things throughout the day. I was pissed off at his school for the lack of innovation and engagement (even though I knew they were doing their best), and for the disparity between my children’s education. I wondered why I cared so much when he seemingly cared so little. Then I realised just that….that he is still, so little.

Jo Johnson I’m a coastal dwelling, storytelling, kinda gal. I’m a self-confessed word-nerd, travel junkie, cheese connoisseur and crazy cat lady. (I also have chickens, dogs, 2 great kids and an awesome husband!). I’ve been helping businesses and thought leaders communicate and market themselves more effectively for 25 years through copywriting, content marketing and book coaching. My skills are in distilling knowledge and experience into aligned pieces of work - a book, program, keynote, blog - and in building awareness and confidence in one’s own writing voice.

I HAVE BEEN RUNNING BUSINESSES FOR OVER 25 YEARS, OVER HALF MY LIFE. FROM HELICOPTER MUSTERING TO CHILDCARE AND THEN INTO THE FOOD INDUSTRY INSPIRED BY 3 CHILDREN AND A HUSBAND THAT ALL HAD FOOD INTOLERANCES OF SOME SORT.

O

ver the past several years I have been focusing on mindset, healing, personal development and developing my higher faculties to be able to work smarter and more in line with my purpose. Little did I know, that this was the perfect preparation for one of the most challenging times we would go through as a business. You know the saying, make or break, well I could see in mid-March this was going to be a huge crossroads in our business and decided to leave town for a week to map out our strategy. To say I also hit the terror barrier, was an understatement, however, this time I recognised that feeling, embraced it as my friend and knew

that I was prepared for whatever was to come. I had done the work and was ready. 12 months earlier, to the day, I had actually unknowingly been preparing for something big. Our food business, GF Oats Australia had been tracking well and personally, I had decided it was time for me to become visible. To stand up and be proud about our achievements to date and start preparing to level up to where I wanted to be. I won 2 significant awards against amazing peers both locally and nationally. We won 2 grants, one a marketing and branding package and one a digital grant which enabled us to build 2 new websites to support our brand, improve our digital presence and prepare for the next level of growth.

grateful we were open for business, the collaboration opportunities that appeared with Legacy, new people who joined our team and the new customers we are now nurturing. What a ride. We have made it to the other side, well sort of, but we are stronger and more resilient as a business. Which proves the saying, if you can face the fear, on the other side of fear is the most amazing view and sense of achievement is outstanding. We closed our financial year achieving our turnover goal, creating a wonderful team around us, thousands of new customers, a stronger business looking forward to a bright future creating jobs in our area. I look forward to the future and the goals that are yet to be achieved in 2020.

The goal was to have all the elements in place before the end of March which was the beginning of our ‘oats’ selling season so to speak. I can honestly say that around midJanuary, I declared online that I thought 2020 was trying to kill me. Lol. Little did I know what was yet to come. I kept touching base with my mentors, working on my mindset, being aware of the story I was telling myself and setting small achievable goals I could celebrate regularly. Alongside all this, I am a daughter to 2 elderly parents, a partner, mother and grandmother, so when COVID 19 struck I found myself quickly jumping into action to ensure my parents were safe on the Sunshine Coast, assist my eldest child make his decision to stay in Germany and ride this out, while one child was moving out of the house with his son, my daughter found herself back in

Australia after 2 years travelling the world, gaining the job of her dreams, losing it and simultaneously ending up back at home with mum and now dispatching orders in our GF Oats warehouse. Emotions were high, off the chart really to be honest. We also lost 2 team members during this time and dug in for the ride with 4 of us turning up each day to battle our way through the next challenge that required solving. Our brains were numb, with stock supplies held up, packaging missing, contract packers closing their doors, and logistics overall just a nightmare. The light in this experience was beautiful customers who showed understanding and support every day. I got very visible sharing updates on orders and being vulnerable and honest. Having my daughter to myself for 8 weeks was just fabulous after such a long time apart. Being so

Kylie Martin-Hollonds The journey of food intolerances began for Kylie and her family over 25 years ago when she realised that her children had intolerances to various foods such as dairy, corn, soy, gluten, wheat to name a few. During this time, it was literally impossible to source speciality foods to cater to dietary intolerances. So, it was into the kitchen trailing recipes with new and incredibly hard to source ingredients. She launched her first range of health food pre-mixes in 2000 into health food and in 2009 started importing Gluten Free Oats into Australia. She is based in regional Queensland, Toowoomba, where she is now the biggest importer and supplier of Gluten-Free Oats Nationally and New Zealand.
