Boosting Resilience at Work

By Nyree Johnson

Don’t be defined by your job or be afraid to try something new.

One way of looking at resilience in the modern day is ‘advancing despite adversity’. Put simply, working towards your vision, being proactive and not waiting for adversity while tackling both large and small everyday challenges. It’s critical to work on your resilience when you’re good so that when something challenging pops up, you’re prepared. It might be the Scout Leader in me, but preparation is essential, always.

The reason why resilience is essential is that it helps you to see challenges as opportunities. It drives you to commit and achieve goals. It reminds you to focus on what you can control and not blame others. And the added bonus and my personal favourite… it encourages positive thinking.

To find out where you are on the resilience matrix, take a look at this free quiz: https://www.mindtools. com/pages/article/resilience-quiz. htm

Some tweaks you can make to your day to day work life to build your resilience are:

• Speak positively to yourself. Stamp out negative self-talk and recognise the fantastic person that you are. You are unique, and so are your talents and skills. Acknowledge that and celebrate your successes, even if it feels odd at first.

• Keep a realistic perspective and think about the context of a particular challenge in the broader atmosphere of lifelong personal development and growth.

Always remember that you are amazing, and you are enough!
