Holiday Advice

Ready, Steady… GO! ABTA – The Travel Association has some top tips as you countdown to your holiday, to help you have a smooth and fun filled trip with your children or grandchildren: Right now

Make sure you have travel insurance from the date of booking your holiday and that everyone in the family is covered. You should also make sure that it covers any medical conditions and activities you plan to do.

10 days to go

Make a note of child friendly events, such as creative workshops, near your destination – you might find there are special deals if you book in advance. Also, if you plan on eating out, check for family friendly restaurants – particularly if anyone has special dietary requirements.

label with the patient’s name on it. Ask your GP for a letter if you have a lot of medication e.g: for allergies and asthma. Some countries have restrictions on medication, check the government’s Travel Aware website to see if there are any restrictions in your destination.

Nine days to go

Check if your accommodation offers the services you need e.g. cots, high chairs or childcare. If you booked with an ABTA travel agent or tour operator they can provide plenty of advice.

Five days to go

Prepare a fun pack with stickers, crayons or games to entertain your kids when you’re travelling and download their favourite films or apps so they’re ready to go.

Seven days to go

If you’re travelling abroad and carrying prescribed medication, ensure it has the original doctor’s 2

Two days to go

Prepare your provisions – such as snacks, food, water, baby wipes and anti-bacterial hand wipes. Carry a change of clothes for your kids and for you, you never know when there might be a spillage or an accident!

On the day

If you’re travelling by car and have children who get car sick, travelling early in the morning means there’s more chance they will sleep. Make sure you take lots of bags just in case! If you are travelling by plane, give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport just in case there are any delays on the roads or rail. You might also want to give you child something to eat or drink during take-off and landing which will help them deal with ear popping.

You’re there!

Enjoy every minute and make memories with your family! Just remember, take particular care to supervise children when they are on balconies (e.g. be mindful of gaps and keep furniture away from the railings), or at the pool or beach – even when lifeguards are available. For more safety advice visit abta.com/tips-and-advice.

Finally

If you’ve booked with an ABTA Member you can travel with confidence knowing you have access a range of support, protection and expertise should you need it.

Top tips to avoid becoming a travel fraud victim

The City of London Police, ABTA and Get Safe Online have published advice on how to avoid becoming a victim of holiday booking fraud – and on how victims should go about reporting it. This advice includes the top tips below:  Stay safe online: Check the web address is legitimate and has not been altered by slight changes to a domain name – such as going from .co.uk to .org

 Check documentation: You should study terms and conditions and be very wary of any companies that don’t provide any at all. When booking through a Holiday Club or Timeshare, get the contract thoroughly vetted by a solicitor before signing up.

 Do your research: Don’t just rely on one review – do a thorough online search to check the company’s credentials. If a company is defrauding people there is a good chance that consumers will post details of their experiences, and warnings about the company.

 Use your instincts: If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.  Report it: Victims should contact Action Fraud via www.actionfraud.police.uk.

 Look for the logo: Check whether the company is a member of a recognised trade body such as ABTA. If you have any doubts, you can verify membership of ABTA online, at abta.com.

 Get free expert advice: For further advice on how to stay safe when booking or researching travel online, go to www.getsafeonline.org/ shopping-banking/holiday-and-travel-booking

 Pay safe: Wherever possible, pay by credit card and be wary about paying directly into a private individual’s bank account.

With Babies and Toddlers

Your First Holiday Together Sachelle, mum of 4 and owner of childfriendly holiday company Holiday Tots, shares her top tips for your first holiday with a baby or toddler. A holiday with a big difference

Be prepared as holidays with toddlers are very different to those without.

Give yourself extra time

From packing to airport arrival, car journeys and site seeing, everything takes longer. Try not to cram in too much so you can go with the flow. The little human still needs looking after, changing, feeding, entertaining, so your holiday is still all about him/her just in a different location.

Take advantage of the little years

Toddlers find fun anywhere so make the most of that. Before too long they start to have an opinion and like to be involved in the holiday choices you make.

Make the journey part of the holiday

As the kids become more aware get them involved in the build-up, helping to pack, plan and start your holiday as soon as you close your front door. What an adventure! 4

Choose a holiday that meets your needs

straight for the rental desk to avoid the queues, especially during summer holidays as it can be busy.

Do you want to have a break from cooking, or just get away from everyday life or maybe an adventure? Are you interested in meeting new people, or are you looking for quality time with family members or friends with kids? All-inclusive resorts will allow you to get away from all the mundane jobs like cooking and shopping, selfcatering villas and cottages are perfect for fun filled days and lazy nights while the kids are tucked up in bed.

Child-friendly accommodation

Check that your hotel, villa or resort is truly childfriendly. Make a list of what matters to you and don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions. We have a checklist on all the properties on Holiday Tots which includes cots, highchairs and stairgates and more, some even include home cooked meals and a pre-shopping service, very handy if you don’t want to take up valuable suitcase space with nappies!

Baby Equipment for out and about (watch out for the sun & heat)

A super little beach trick that will amaze you:

If you are heading to the beach, take a small bag of talcum powder with you, a little dusting on hands and feet removes sand like magic! Try it, it will amaze you! I hope you picked up something useful from my top tips. Family time is so precious and even more so when you get the time to holiday together, so have fun wherever you decide to spend your next holiday 

Pushchair and/or sling are a must for any holiday. Make sure you have a blackout cover for the pushchair so that you can safely go into the sun at any time of day and your little one can even have a nap! Slings are great for long walks and sometimes even browsing around those quaint little markets. Also, mosquito nets are handy, they pack small and there are plenty of options on the market for pushchairs.

About the author Sachelle heads up the team at Holiday Tots, a family company who specialise in holidays with babies and young children. The Holiday Tots website is packed full of holiday ideas and info on holidaying with little ones. Take a look www.holidaytots.co.uk

Hydration

Keep baby hydrated, if taking water from a spoon, bottle or beaker isn’t working use a medicine syringe.

Tips for air travel

Whether travelling long or short haul allow enough time at the airport to relax a little, I always found a sling handy when walking around when mine were little. On most airlines you can check in a pushchair and car seat. On the plane I always have a bag of goodies. Masking tape is great for little ones, it sticks everywhere and is easily drawn on too! Pack nappies and wipes into individual nappy sacks and a couple with an extra vest/outfit. So handy in the small airplane toilets.

A useful car hire tip

If you’re flying and then hiring a car at the airport, ask your partner to skip baggage claim and head 5

Villa Holidays

Five reasons why a villa holiday could be perfect for your family Choosing the right family holiday can take time and patience, particularly if convenience and practicality are important to you. That’s why a villa holiday is such a popular option for so many families – offering security without the need for adjoining rooms, no need to pack and unpack beach bags, and down-time for parents once the kids are tucked up in bed. They can also work out more affordable than a hotel.

1

2

Endless options to match your style and budget

Renting a villa allows you to choose exactly the type of holiday you want. Once you have decided on a budget, the options are endless. You can stay pretty much anywhere in the world in a huge range of properties. Whatever your taste – a smart and luxurious beach villa, total seclusion in the hills, a stylish townhouse or even a cabin in the woods – the choice is yours.

A holiday with no timetables and your own pool

Imagine a holiday with no set meal times and a fridge with all the food and drinks you like. How about your own private pool? No sitting on alert, bolt upright all afternoon, eagle-eyed, trying to spot your little ones in the middle of splashing, screaming, swarming mass of youngsters. Fancy a midnight dip on your own – go for it, no one can stop you! 7

3

Space – as much as you need

Let’s face it, hotel rooms seem to shrink with every day of your holiday so you can barely reach the bed without traversing an assault course of wet clothes, discarded toys and ‘euch, what have I just stepped in?!’. One of the huge advantages of renting a villa is space. Many family-friendly villas may also have a selection of toys and games, irons and ironing boards and much more so do ask about what’s provided. That way, you can travel lighter and have more time to kick back and relax.

4

Sharing with family and friends

With multi-generational holidays on the rise, renting a villa is the sensible way to keep family members of all ages happy. Check the floorplans to see how close – or not! – you want to be with your loved ones. Sharing a villa with family and friends can give you quality time together that you can’t really get anywhere else.

Austria

Summer in the Alps If you think of Austria as a winter destination for adrenaline sports junkies, then it’s time to think again. Salzburgerland in Austria may be one of the world’s leading skiing destinations, but during the summer it becomes a fantastic family holiday destination, with a huge range of outdoor activities for children and parents to get stuck in to.

W

hether it’s walking trails, bike rides, cable car rides, or swimming and relaxing that’s your thing – there’s everything here to make a family holiday to remember. So here are two of the region’s most family-friendly locations, St. Johann in Salzburg and Hochkönig.

ST. JOHANN IN SALZBURG

Situated high in the Alps, but only 55km from Salzburg Airport, St. Johann in Salzburg is a cosy alpine village that is ideally positioned as a base for excursions. During the summer months, families can hit hiking and cycling trails, or spend the day by a swimming lake or pool – all the while enjoying the pure mountain air and taking in some amazing views.

Geisterberg

For a real cultural experience for the little ones, take the cable car to the Geisterberg (which means ‘Spirit Mountain’ in German). Reached via the gondola in St. Johanns’ Alpendorf, the adventure park has more than 40 adventure stations – from climbing towers, slides, swings to aqua amusements and picnic benches perfectly situated to give you incredible views while you’re having a spot of lunch.

Walking, Hiking and Biking

Active families are spoilt for choice when it comes to St. Johann in Salzburg. An absolute must is the Liechtensteinklamm gorge. At 300m deep and 4km in length, the gorge is one of the longest Pictures this page: Summer in St. Johann in Salzburg All images on this page © josalzburg.com Mira Geh

HOCHKÖNIG

Hochkönig really lets you get back to nature with children’s herb hikes to the many herb hill farms in the region, mountain biking and e-biking trails galore, petting zoos and wildlife enclosures. Hochkönig is also well known for its food, and the region’s many huts and restaurants serve delicious meals made with local products, including amazing vegan recipes. The children will also love all the adventures Hochkönig has to offer. Last summer, British family Ben, Michal and their kids had the holiday of a lifetime. Here are two of the many highlights of their trip:

Natrun Adventure Mountain

This is a fantastic day out for the whole family. Reached via the award-winning Natrunbahn lift, Natrun Adventure Mountain is an extensive area and most of the mountain is accessible with a stroller. Their first stop was the Adventure Playground, where the kids could explore and blow off steam and they loved sliding down the 5 stainless steel slides at the Forest Slide Park.

Mountain Biking on the Flow One Trail

One of the region’s most popular activities is mountain biking. The 3.3km Flow trail is suitable for beginners taking in diverse terrain through particularly picturesque landscapes. and deepest in Europe. Take a walk along the 1km wooden walkway to experience the sounds of the rapids below before reaching a spectacular waterfall. You should also visit the world’s largest ice cave. Located deep inside the the Hochkogel mountain the Eisriesenwelt – or ‘world of ice giants’ – is an amazing natural wonder. If you prefer your fun on two wheels, there are bike routes to suit every level, from family-friendly scenic outings to the legendary 300km Tauern cycle path. With its numerous playgrounds, sights, and swimming pools along the route, it is ideal for the whole family.

E

Esprit Ski offers the most flexible family holidays in the mountains. With exceptional childcare at your disposal in all our resorts, you can decide exactly how you want to spend your precious holiday time.

ver considered or been on a ski holiday with the kids? Concerned about what it might entail and whether it might just be a step too far? With amazing snowfall across the Alps, this could be the year to introduce your family to the joys of skiing.

With Esprit you can safely introduce your family to the fun of a ski holiday and all it involves. We recognise it’s important for the family to spend time together whilst allowing you time on the slopes yourselves.

An active holiday where everyone gets a break

The joy of a family ski holiday is that everyone gets to do what they love doing, be it playing in the snow, skiing, building igloos or having a quiet drink in a mountain bar. And because all Esprit Chalets and Chalet Hotels are catered, you’ll get a break from the cooking and the clearing up.

Time for kids, time for you, time together

The amount of time you spend as a whole family is completely up to you. We can keep your children busy and well cared for with a tailored programme of activities for their age - including small group ski lessons for all abilities from as young as 3 years old. 19

Flexible childcare to suit you

Our childcare is extremely flexible with qualified English-speaking nannies who can look after your little ones for as much of the day or evening as you need. We have strict ratios of nannies to children in all our nurseries and Snow Club fun for children over nursery age.

BAT weeks - Have fun with Bertie and his friends

The great news is that you no longer have to wait until your children are of skiing age to go on a family ski holiday. Esprit Ski’s Baby and Toddler Weeks are especially for parents who have a passion for skiing but also want to enjoy holidaying with their young children. On top of all the fun in BAT club, children will be introduced to the cute BAT club characters and enjoy resort specific activities ranging from snow painting and treasure hunts to snowman and igloo-building. Along with the bonus of travelling out of term times, parents will also benefit from significant price reductions on BAT weeks, so look out for these offers on our website.

Getting the right accommodation

It’s important that you can sleep easy at night knowing that your children are within earshot. By travelling with family ski specialists you are more likely to be offered a range of flexible accommodation – from a family suite, adjoining rooms to twins or triples. And with family dining or a choice of catered options, mealtimes are also taken care of. Kids get their own menu and mealtimes meaning mum and dad get a break from the cooking and the mess afterwards!

Keep it hassle free and book with a family ski operator who will put you and your family first

Choosing the right family resorts

Particularly on your first family ski holiday it’s worth investing some time thinking about where you want to go so that you choose one of the resorts that are best suited to families with young children. By travelling with a family friendly ski company, you’ll find a lot of the leg work has been done for you. However, paying attention to transfer time, facilities in resort and making sure everything is family friendly is always wise.

The Esprit service promise means from the moment you book your holiday we’ve got your needs covered, and will keep the whole holiday as stress-free as possible. From tips on what to pack, getting the kids into the right kit for the slopes to organising the right level of ski lessons for you all. We’ll keep the whole family safe and happy on and off the slopes, to make sure you get the most out of your ski holiday. We fly from a wide range of regional airports and most of our departures are on Sundays, which are often quieter for travel. Our reps meet you and your family at your arrival airport and ensure that you have a smooth transfer to your resort. There will be plenty of extra pairs of hands to help with tired children or excess luggage.

‘Every single member of your staff is a credit to your company. I feel we have had 5 star treatment this week. Thank you!’ The Atkinson family, Val d’Isère, Jan 2018

Florida Adventures Planning a family adventure? Look no further than Florida! From collecting shark teeth and sand dollars on stunning beaches to exhilarating theme park thrills, Florida has everything a family needs for the perfect fun-packed holiday. Meet a Manatee

One of the most unique experiences you’ll find in Florida is swimming with manatees in Crystal River, the Manatee Capital of the World – the only place where you can legally swim with them in North America. Friendly and inquisitive, the gentle manatee will even come and say ‘hello’ with a kiss on the nose and show off their surprising acrobatic skills as they play in the water. Various operators offer daily tours which begin with a manatee awareness video and provide all swimming and snorkelling gear, so you and your family are manatee ready for this bucket list adventure. There is no hard age requirement for this activity, but children must wear a wetsuit and remain quiet and calm in the water.

Family Cruises

All Aboard

Cruise holidays offer family fun by the bucket-load with enough attractions and distractions to keep everyone happy – young and old. Andy Harmer, Cruise Lines International UK & Ireland director, gives us the lowdown.

N

ever before has there been such a wide choice of familyfriendly ships bursting with exciting activities that promise to wow even the most energetic youngsters. Children can make a splash in onboard water-parks, whizz down hairraising waterslides, try their hand at go-karting and even take a ride on the first-ever rollercoaster at sea. The largest of cruise ships even boast surfing simulators, ice-skating rinks, dodgem cars, laser-tag arenas and escape rooms.

From Babies to Teens

Tiny tots are catered for admirably on cruise ships in nurseries that take babies from six months old and toddler play areas, while kids’ clubs are aimed at children from two or three years upwards and split into different age groups with a full programme of parties, scavenger hunts and games. Specific entertainment aimed at younger tastes includes special theatre productions, familythemed competitions and game shows, along with 4D cinemas and giant deck movie screens showing some of the latest releases. And teens can hang-out in their own chill zones where adults are banned and spend their evenings in nightclubs serving alcohol-free mocktails.

at going to sea and watching other ships come and go in ports of call. Being able to visit so many destinations with minimal hassle is another big plus, and parents can choose whether to go ashore as a family or leave their offspring in the kids’ clubs while they go off to explore. Several lines also offer familyorientated shore excursions designed to appeal to a younger audience, with outings to water parks, animal attractions or daredevil activities for budding adventurers. With so much on offer, it’s not surprising that family groups are turning multi-generational as grandparents increasingly join such gatherings on ships which cater admirably for all ages from babes in arms to octogenarians and everyone in-between. Cruising, it seems, has grown up to offer the best value family holidays around.

What’s Included?

For families, great though as it is, it’s not all about the onboard entertainment. Flexible dining and buffet restaurants are also a massive appeal, as families are free to choose their own routine without being hampered by set meal times or dress codes. Food is included in the price of the cruise and with such a wide choice, from burgers and pizzas to salads and world cuisine buffets, there’s enough to tempt even the fussiest of eaters. Free soft drinks and complimentary ice creams are the icing on the cake – and there are lots of those too! Family-friendly cabins come with sofa beds or bunks that drop down from the ceiling to cater for groups of up to four or five, while more spacious alternatives are inter-connecting rooms or swanky suites with that may even have their own on-balcony hot tub.

Convenience

Sailing from a UK port makes holidaying at sea even easier, especially when travelling with young children – and you can guarantee their excitement
