From wonderful wetlands and rugged heathlands to the fascinating world below the waves - there’s no shortage of options when it comes to exploring our countryside and coast. Here’s a flavour of some amazing places you can visit to see wildlife up close this summer:

And remember, you don’t always have to go somewhere to get close to nature! Whether it’s making a bug hotel, a bird feeder, or butterfly garden, there’s so much you can do to support wildlife in your own backyard. As well as looking after existing wildlife havens, The Wildlife Trusts are bringing nature to where people live. That includes creating and improving nature reserves in urban areas, planting wildflower meadows, and building ponds. Across the country, The Wildlife Trusts want to see at least 30% of the UK's land and seas protected and connected for nature by 2030 - creating a future where nature is in recovery, and where everyone, everywhere, has access to wild spaces and the wildlife that calls them home.

B rockholes Nature Reserve, which is near Preston and spans more than 250 acres, is full of nature moments. The reeds are alive with birdsong, the lakeside brimming with dazzling dragonflies, the wildflower meadows packed with butterflies and moths. Hides, nature trails, and viewing platforms provide endless opportunities to see all kinds of wildlife. T he Lakeside Nature Discovery Centre, near Thatcham in Berkshire, offers a quick getaway for easy woodland and lakeside walks, with an adventure playground for young explorers and interactive wildlife displays.

A bberton Reservoir Nature Discovery Park in Essex is a wetland site of international importance for wildfowl, with around 40,000 ducks, geese and swans visiting each year. There are ample walking trails and bird hides with stunning panoramic views across the reservoir, as well as play areas for little ones.

Most Wildlife Trusts reserves are free to visit, though occasionally there are parking charges. A full listing of places to visit including events this summer can be found at wildlifetrusts.org/familyfun Credit: Tom Marshall

M ontrose Basin in Argus is an enclosed estuary of the river South Esk covering 750 hectares, home to over 80,000 migratory birds – including pink-footed geese, Arctic terns, knots and sedge warblers. The four-star visitor centre offers a great day out for all the family. T he Livings Seas Centre, in Flamborough is a firm favourite with families visiting East Yorkshire’s stunning Heritage Coast. The visitor centre is a stone’s throw from a pretty beach where Yorkshire Wildlife Trust run regular seaside safaris across the rockpools.

Above: Arctic Tern. Below: Brockholes Nature Reserve

T he Welsh Wildlife Centre and Teifi Marshes Nature Reserve is a perfect day out in Pembrokeshire. Families will love exploring nature trails on foot or two wheels, exploring the willow maze, and meeting the resident water buffalo and giant willow badger.

It’s Grow Time!

With summer here and holiday options limited, many of us will be looking for more ways to draw the kids outside for a break from the everincreasing screen time. If that’s familiar, then look no further than The Little Grower’s Cookbook by Ghillie James and Julia Parker, a fabulous book full of inventive and educational projects that encourages children to discover the joy of growing and using vegetables and flowers. This book of simple and sustainable gardening activities, recipes and weekend fun for every season, brings nature closer to home. With warm thanks to Ghillie and Julia, they’ve shared a wonderful growing project along with a tasty recipe from the book with us to get your budding gardeners and cooks started!

More about The Little Grower’s Cookbook The Little Grower’s Cookbook uses repurposed and recycled materials and all the activities are environmentally friendly. The weekend fun projects include innovative ideas like creating little pots of sunshine (planting flower seeds in homemade pots); magical flower potions (creating your own flower-scented water); hosting a butterfly banquet to planting your own packed lunch or building a bug hotel. Little Grower’s facts are scattered throughout the book with ideas like growing your own pizza box. There are simple step-by-step instructions and the book is packed with charming photography. EGG FRIENDS Making these funny little people with their crazy hair is a fun activity for all ages and all times of the year, as they can be grown inside. Garden cress is a herb used in recipes but it is also eaten as a medicine in some countries. The edible shoots have a mild, peppery taste similar to watercress (not surprising considering the two are botanically related and are from the same plant family). Be careful when handling the shells as they are very fragile.

THE BASICS

When to grow

Egg friends can be grown all year round, and your egg friend cress ‘hair’ will appear within 3–4 days. Just keep watering them so they don’t dry out.

You will need

 Cotton wool to stand eggshells up

Put the eggshells back in the box, making sure you can see their faces (a bit of cotton wool in the bottom will help them stand a bit taller if you need it).

 Multi-purpose or potting compost

Sowing

 Empty eggshells in halves, preferably large  Cardboard egg box

HOW TO GROW

 Cress seeds (sometimes called mustard and cress)

For each egg friend (half eggshell) carefully tip about ¼ teaspoon of cress seeds into your hand. Sprinkle onto the damp soil or wet paper, and repeat for the rest of your egg friends.

 Water sprayer (use an old cleaning spray bottle, once washed out)

Watering and growing

 Waterproof felt tip pens or paints

Don’t let the soil or paper in your eggshells dry out. Spray it lightly every time it feels dry. It’s useful to set a time of day to check the soil (after breakfast for example) so you don’t forget. Place your egg box in a light place such as a windowsill or kitchen table. In 3–4 days you will see tiny green leaves appear and these will continue to grow until they are about 4cm long and ready to cut.

 Kitchen towel

PREPARATION Choose your container

Egg friends are grown in eggshell halves – you should end up with two halves any time you crack an egg. Carefully wash used eggshells in some warm soapy water and let them fully dry out on some kitchen paper. When you have about 6 halves, you will have enough to make an eggshell family.

Harvesting

Carefully use a pair of scissors to snip the cress leaves and their stems – make sure you ask for some adult help if you need it.

Be soil ready

You need to fill the eggshells with soil before you decorate them, otherwise they will be too fragile. Stand the halved eggshells in an old egg box, and using a teaspoon, carefully fill each one half way with multi-purpose or potting compost. Pat the soil down lightly and spray with a little water to make them damp, but not soaked. Alternatively, fold up a piece of kitchen paper and tuck that inside the eggshell, then spray with water. The cress will also grow happily on the wet paper. Wipe the outside of the shells to remove any dirt, then use your felt tips or paints to gently draw some faces on the shells. The cress will be the hair!

Make your own lunch!

Why not try an egg and cress sandwich? Mash a chopped up peeled hardboiled egg with 1 heaped teaspoon of mayonnaise and a pinch of salt. Thickly spread onto sliced buttered bread and top with some snipped cress ‘hair’. Top with another slice of buttered bread and cut into quarters. Delicious! 50 Years of Educational Games and Jigsaws

NEW! Games • Jigsaws • Colouring Books

www.orchardtoys.com

RAINBOW ROLLS Rice paper wrappers start off crisp, but as soon as you dip them in water they soften. You can fill the soaked wrappers with all of your favourite veggies and herbs, and if you like, add some thin cooked rice noodles, chopped chicken, sausage or prawns. Be as adventurous as you dare! They are great for packed lunches. Just place them in a container between lettuce leaves to stop them sticking or drying out. Plastic wrap is not planet friendly and will also stick to the rolls. Makes 6 long rolls, which you can cut in half

You will need

 25g rice vermicelli noodles (optional)  6 spring roll rice wrappers such as Blue Dragon, found in larger supermarkets, oriental shops or online.  A selection of your favourite veggies cut into fine strips or grated, such as cucumber, carrot, red pepper, apple, avocado, sweetcorn, tomato, lettuce or radish, plus, if you like, finely shredded chicken or sliced cooked prawns

Preparation

1. Form a line of little bowls containing the filling ingredients you have chosen. If you are using noodles, put them into a bowl and cover with boiling water, leave for 4 minutes, then drain, before cutting with scissors into easy to pick up clumps.

 1 tablespoon fresh mint and/or coriander, roughly chopped

2. Follow the instructions on the packet for soaking the wrappers. Usually this is just dipping the wrapper in a shallow bowl of warm water. Once soft, place the wrapper on a board in front of you. Choose from the ingredients, placing small mounds onto the wrapper in a line. Once you have filled the rolls (enough to make a sausage shape as in the photo on page 125), just pull up each side to cover each end and roll the wrapper and its fillings very tightly. Cut each roll in half and store between lettuce leaves until ready to eat.

 1 tablespoon chopped roasted peanuts, optional

For the mild chilli dipping sauce  1 lime, juiced

 3 teaspoons mild runny honey  1½ tablespoons rice wine vinegar  1 tablespoon fish sauce  1 garlic clove, crushed  ½ red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped (optional)

3. For the dipping sauces – choose both or just one. Simply stir the ingredients together in a small bowl. For the peanut sauce, add 1–2 tsp water so that the sauce isn’t too thick. The sauces will keep in the fridge for up to a week.

For the peanut dipping sauce  90g crunchy peanut butter

 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar  1½ tablespoons soy sauce

4. To serve, place the rolls on a big plate with the sauces on the side for dipping.

 ½ garlic clove, crushed  ½ teaspoon grated ginger

Extracted from: The Little Grower’s Cookbook by Ghillie James & Julia Parker (Lettuce Publishing) £20 Hardback. Photography by Ali Allen. Widely available including at Amazon, Waterstones and WH Smith.

 3 tablespoons coconut milk or water  1 tablespoon runny honey  ½ lime, juice only 17

Sustainability

How to be Sustainable(ish) this Summer. With Kids...

Jen Gale, founder of the A Sustainable Life blog and author of The Sustainable(ish) Guide to Green Parenting, shares her practical and achievable tips for doing our bit for the planet this summer – smart swaps that really do make a difference Plastic-free(ish) picnics

Life has been turned upside down in the last 18 months, and with the summer holidays ahead of us and restrictions (hopefully) continuing to relax, we’re all looking ahead to a return to normal and letting our hair down a little. We’ve had months of being told we can’t do this, and we can’t do that, and the very last thing any of us want to be told is that we can’t have fun over the summer because of the planet. The good news is that there are loads of easy, ‘sustainable(ish)’ swaps you can try out, that will lighten your impact without massive demands on your time, budget or headspace.

It’s easy to do a supermarket sweep of the deli aisle if you’re venturing out for a picnic, but not only can this leave you with a small mountain of single use plastic to ram into the bin, it can be pricey too. If you’ve got time, then prepping a few bits at home can help you to save some money, and some plastic.  Swap clingfilm for beeswax wraps for sandwiches. If you haven’t got any wraps, then foil is a good alternative. If it’s clean, I’m the weirdo who wipes it over, folds it up and saves 18

 Reusable wipes – if you’re taking napkins, then it’s a super easy swap to bung in some reusable wipes instead. You can buy them from places like Cheeky Wipes (www.cheekywipes.com) , or simply cut up an old towel, or use flannels. If you’ve got younger kids that you think might need some wipes, one option is to simply take some damp reusable wipes in a wet bag, or alternatively pour a little water on when you need them.

Slip, slap, slop

Sun creams can be laden with chemicals that not only have potentially adverse effects on us, but can also damage marine life if we use them and then swim in the sea. Look for organic and cruelty-free versions, like Odylique (www.odylique.co.uk) and Green People (www.greenpeople.co.uk) who do an easy to apply formula especially for kids. If you’re looking for a plastic-free sun cream, there is a UK brand called Shade (www.shadecream.com) that comes in a metal tin. However, it needs to be rea-applied every 15-20 minutes, which might make it slightly less appealing given how traumatic it seems to be to put sun cream on kids…

We all scream for ice cream…

Nothing says summer like the first ice cream of the year. If there’s no allergy concerns, then simply asking for your ice cream in a cone rather than a cup helps cut down massively on the plastic footprint! If you like to keep a stash of ice lollies in the freezer at home, then how about having a go at making your own? You can simply use fruit juice (recycle the bottle once it’s empty!) or there are loads of different recipes online. You can find all kinds of funky moulds – IKEA do some ‘Callipo’ style reusable moulds, and Lakeland have a good range too.

it for next time. If that’s a step too far for you, then make sure you gather all the bits of foil and scrunch them into a tennis ball sized ball before popping it into the recycling.  Buy share bags of crisps and dole them out onto plates at the picnic – not plastic-free, but definitely less plastic than lots of individual bags! If you’re looking for a plastic-free option, some zero waste shops do crisps, or check out Two Farmers Crisps (www.twofarmers.co.uk) for delicious crisps in home compostable bags.  Grab yourself some reusable pouches for yogurts and smoothies on the go. My favourite are the ones from Nom Nom Kids (www.nomnomkids.co.uk)  Take reusable cutlery – if you haven’t got any specific picnic stuff, just use some from the cutlery drawer, and take a Tupperware pot to bring the dirty knives and forks home with you. 19

Keeping your cool

Body boards are also a big issue for beach waste, with thousands being broken and/or discarded on our beaches every year, often after just one use. Buy a new or quality second hand board that will last. Or if it’s your first time and you’re just trying it out, then many surf shops and beach stores now have rental schemes. While you’re on the beach, either ‘take three for the sea’ or do a ‘#2minutebeachclean’ – beachclean. net. The idea is that you leave the beach a little cleaner than it was when you found it. Lots of beaches now have ‘beach cleaning stations’ with litter pickers and bags, and some beachside cafes will even give you a free coffee in exchange for collecting a bucket full of rubbish!

It takes a run of just two or three sunny days for us all to start complaining about how hot it is, and for the kids to want the paddling pool to be set up. Paddling pools use up a huge amount of water, but can also provide bundles of fun as well as the possibility of some peace and quiet on a hot day, so it may well be that this is one area where you’re embracing the ‘ish’. If you’re lucky, you might be able to delay the point at which you have to either buy a new paddling pool or drag last year’s out of the shed, with water pistols, or simply sponges and a bucket of water for a good old fashioned water fight. If/when you do have to resort to the paddling pool, popping a fitted sheet over it at night can help to keep the water a little cleaner so it might need replacing less often. When you do empty the paddling pool, if you can resist the urge to simply open the plug, and instead fill up watering cans and water your garden plants, or pour it into a water butt, your eco-halo will be thoroughly well polished. If/when your paddling pool or inflatables develop a leak, don’t bin them! Instead send them off to Wyatt & Jack (www.wyattandjack.com) on the Isle of Wight to be made into gorgeous funky bags and accessories.

Safety

Choosing the Right Child Car Seat By Rebecca Needham Road Safety Officer (England) Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)

A car seat is probably one of the most important purchases you will make for your child, but with so many types and models of car seat on the market, it can be difficult to know where to start and which one to choose To ensure that your child is travelling safely, it is vital to choose a seat that is suitable for the weight or height of your child. You will also need to ensure that the seat is compatible with your vehicle, as not all seats fit all vehicles. Our advice is to always check the manufacturer’s website to ensure that the seat is compatible with your vehicle and to visit a reputable retailer with trained child car seat fitters. In many cases, staff will be able to help you

to correctly fit the seat in your vehicle. Remember, if the seat will be used in other vehicles, you will need to ensure that it is compatible with all of the vehicles that it will be used in. For more information, you can visit our child car seat fitting and compatibility hub: childcarseats.org. uk/choosing-using/child-car-seat-fitting-andcompatibility For a child car seat to be legally used in the UK, it will need to meet a set safety standard which will be shown by the bright orange label on the seat. It will either show that the seat conforms to the older testing regulations by displaying R44, or 30

the newer regulation which includes a side impact test and will display R129. Before buying we recommend that you have the following information to hand:

 Seatbelt incorrectly routed – When using a rearward facing car seat, the vehicle seatbelt needs to be routed through the blue guides, whilst on forward facing seats they go through the red guides. Make sure you are using the correct guides on combination seats that have both rear and forward facing capability.

 What is the child’s weight?  What is the child’s height?  What is the child’s age?

 What vehicle(s) will the seat be used in?

 Does the vehicle(s) the seat will be used in have ISOFIX points? These are the international standard for attachment points for child safety seats in passenger cars.

 Buckle crunch – the seatbelt buckle should be level with or lower than the car seat, it should not be bent and under pressure as in the event of a collision it might pull apart.

 Does the vehicle(s) the seat will be used in have underfloor storage? In many cases, child car seats with an ISOFIX base and support foot will be unsuitable for your vehicle.

 The child is not held securely in the seat – Children up to 18kg will normally be held in the seat by an internal harness. The shoulder straps should be adjusted so that they are level with the child’s shoulders, with the crotch strap below the soft tummy area. The straps must be tight so that you can just get your index and middle fingers between the strap and the child’s chest.

Once you have chosen a child car seat, it is vital to make sure that it is correctly fitted. Although it is very uncommon for parents to intentionally put their child at risk, surprisingly, up to 70% of children are using incorrectly fitted car seats. In some cases, this can be because the seat is not compatible with the vehicle or the child is outside of the seat weight or height limit. However, fortunately, many are minor faults that can be easily corrected. Common faults include:

 A rear facing seat can’t be used in the front with an activated airbag For further information www.childcarseats.org.uk or if you have a specific question RoSPA help desk can be contacted on 0121 248 2130 or help@rospa.com 31

Stay Water Safe on Holiday this Summer Family holidays are a great time to relax and have lots of fun at the swimming pool or beach. For maximum enjoyment it is also important for us all to be water safe, especially abroad, so we’ve teamed up with our friends over at Konfidence for their top water safety tips for parents. First and foremost, remember young children are attracted to water. Don’t take your eyes off them for even one second if they are near water. Supervision is the key to safety.

At the Beach – Safety Tips

 Parents / Guardians should take turns to supervise children who are in the swimming pool.

 Be aware of hazards – waves, tides, rip currents.

 Familiarise yourself with the beach flags. On the continent a ‘Red for Danger’ or ‘Yellow for Caution’ and a ‘Green Safe to Swim’ flag system is used, but often a bit on the liberal side. It’s better to be safe and swim only when the ‘Green’ flag is showing.

At the Swimming Pool – Safety Tips

 Don’t take lilos and other inflatables into the water – they can blow you out to sea and they may ‘pop’.

 If the children’s pool is adjacent to the main pool, weak and non-swimmers should be deterred from changing pools or using the dividing walls / features to walk on.

 At the beach, never play or swim near rocks, or near boats or other crafts.

 Weak and non-swimmers should not go out of their depth – even when they are using floatation devices.

 Always swim parallel to the shore rather than out to sea – and stay within your depth.

 Do not run around the pool, in case the surface is slippery.

 Make sure there is an adult with a child in the sea and someone on shore who knows you are swimming.

 Always swim in pools patrolled by lifeguards.

 Use a buoyancy aid or personal floatation device to be safe in and around the water. Konfidence say a big misconception is that parents with children who ‘can’ swim think they don’t need some form of buoyancy aid.

 Never leave a child alone on the beach.

And finally, explain and reiterate the four water safety rules to children:

“Most children love to play for hours in or at the side the pool – but they get tired. A personal floatation device, such as our Original Konfidence Swim Jacket, gives them enough buoyancy and you the time to reach them if they are in difficulty – it only takes a few seconds for you to take your eye off them, and especially if you are supervising more one than child in the pool. The hi-visibility yellow back on the Jacket also helps greatly.”

❶ Never Swim Alone ❷ Do not dive into unknown bodies of water ❸ Do not push or jump on others ❹ Learn and teach them where to get help in case of an emergency

Most of all have lots of family fun on your holiday this summer!

Food Allergies Explained What is Food Allergy?

Almost 1 in 12 young children suffer from a food allergy. Common culprits of food allergy responsible for causing 90% of allergic reactions include cow’s milk, egg, fish, peanuts, shellfish, tree nuts, soya, and wheat. Food allergies occur when your immune system becomes confused – instead of ignoring harmless food proteins, it triggers a reaction leading to the release of a chemical called histamine, which can cause hives or swelling. More severe reactions are called anaphylaxis, which can be life threatening.

How Do I Know If My Baby Has a Food Allergy? Food allergies are much more common amongst children with family members who suffer from allergy; this may include eczema, asthma, hay fever or food allergy. Babies who suffer from eczema are at a higher risk of having food allergies. If you have specific concerns about food allergy, look for consistent symptoms and discuss with your GP or Health Visitor.

Weaning and Food Allergy

The Department of Health recommends that high-allergenic foods (milk, eggs, wheat, gluten, soya, fish, shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, seeds) 37

Severe symptoms (anaphylaxis). These require urgent medical attention:

 Wheezing or chest tightness, can appear similar to a severe asthma attack.  Swelling of tongue and throat, restricting airways. This can cause noisy breathing (wheezing), coughing or change in voice/cry.

can be introduced from 6 months. Foods should be introduced individually, with three days in between each new food, making it easier to identify any food that causes a reaction (your child should be well at the time of introduction). Once your baby has had several attempts at eating the individual foods, you can start mixing them to increase the variety. Keeping a food and symptom diary may help identify any foods that have triggered a reaction. By 12 months at the latest your baby should have been introduced to all the major allergenic foods (where appropriate). If you have a strong family history of allergy or your baby has eczema, evidence suggests it may be beneficial to start weaning before six months (but not before 17 weeks old) when your baby is developmentally ready. For more information, please see our Weaning Support Pack (allergyuk.org).

 Faintness/dizziness caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure (hypotension)

 Babies and small children may become pale and floppy.

Symptoms of delayed food allergy:

 Eczema persisting despite being treated adequately with emollients and steroids  Reflux

 Poor growth

 Constipation and/or diarrhoea

 Back arching or raising knees to chest with tummy pain  Frequent distress and crying after feeding

What Are the Symptoms of Food Allergy in Babies and Children?

More information and support:

Food allergy can be confusing as symptoms vary. Immediate food allergy (IgE mediated) can present within minutes and up to two hours after eating food, while delayed food allergic reactions (non IgE) may present many hours or a day later.

Allergy UK’s Dietitian Service provides specialist information and guidance to parents of children 0-5 years old who are experiencing symptoms suggestive of food allergy and have not been referred to or seen by a dietitian.

 Mild to moderate symptoms typically affect the skin, the respiratory system and the gut.

If you would like more information regarding the Allergy UK Dietitian Service, please contact our Helpline on 01322 619898 or info@allergyuk.org

Symptoms of immediate food allergy:

 A flushed face, hives, red and itchy rash

 Mild swelling, particularly lips, eyes and face.  A runny or blocked nose, sneezing, watering eyes.

There is detailed information and guidance on food allergy in children on the Allergy UK website.

 Nausea and vomiting, tummy cramps, diarrhea.  A scratchy or itchy mouth and throat.
