Cooking With Kids Time for some fun
M ost parents are reluctant to let their kids help in the kitchen or with cooking, mainly to avoid accidents. Yes, kids are messy, they love to turn any activity into a game, and in their eagerness to help, they don’t pay attention. streets were far more flavorful to the food served in the hotel! I began showing an interest in cooking and recreating dishes at a very early age, which was always encouraged. I recall being very young, sitting in our tiny kitchen in Hong Kong right next to my Mum as she was cooking and preparing dinner. As I sat and watched, I saw a symphony of beauty in the methodic masterpiece that was being created. At six years old, my sister taught me how to make cheese scrambled eggs. It was the very first thing I cooked and it started my many years of culinary experiments. When I was eight years old, I was alone at home and was getting hungry and could not see the
sense in waiting around for Mum and Dad to come home before dinner even got started. I browsed through the fridge and created my first four-course meal! I made a salad starter, soup, and roast chicken complete with steamed veggies and roasted potatoes, dessert, and I even tried making bread. While, I used no yeast and it was flat, it was very tasty regardless. With the table set perfectly, candles lit and a bottle of white wine chilling in the fridge; I called my parents at the office and told them to come home because it was “an emergency”. Of course, they dropped everything and rushed home. Delighted there was no “emergency” other than my stomach screaming in hunger, they were even more delighted with the aroma that greeted them, and the meal that was presented to them.
immediately, I decided to start by creating a blog and seeing how my recipes were received. I created the blog in May 2010 and I’ve had some great feedback. I can’t say I have a “specialty” or “signature” dish or cuisine because I tend to find myself going through stages; Chinese, Middle Eastern, Indian, Malay, Singaporean, it just depends on my mood, I guess. Growing up in Hong Kong, and traveling throughout the world, the cuisines of these places identify themselves in me. So when I revisit them in my dishes, I feel comforted and at “home”.
