Introduction to Hand and Machine Piecing

SCULPTURE
Introduction to the Welded Form
All Levels - must be 18 years and older TUITION: $250 LAB FEE: $70 Through this course you will have the chance to learn basic skills in metalworking and electric arc welding to produce a welded form. In addition, other aspects of creative metalworking will be discussed, such as forming, cold connections and finishing. Concepts on scale, kinetics and design will also be discussed to help in understanding limits of material. The student will come away from the class with a creation of his or her own design as fabricated by there own hands. BEGINNING JEWELRY
Beginners - must be 18 years and older TUITION: $250 / LAB FEE: $70 This course is designed for the beginning student with no previous jewelrymaking experience. Students will learn basic techniques through demonstrations and projects. Techniques will include sawing, piercing, texturing, riveting, soldering and bezel setting cabochon stones. COMBINED CLASS: ADVANCED BEGINNING JEWELRY AND INDEPENDENT PROJECTS/ INTERMEDIATE JEWELRY
Advanced Beginners/Intermediate - must be 18 years and older TUITION: $250 / LAB FEE: $70 ADVANCED BEGINNERS: This course is designed for students who have completed the beginning level jewelry class and are ready to learn a variety of new techniques. Technical demonstrations will focus on basic lost-wax and cuttlefish casting techniques, beginning enameling, surface development including etching, reticulation and fusing, as well as die-forming and hollow construction. Students will have plenty of class time to practice new techniques and make jewelry of their own design incorporating these techniques. INDEPENDENT PROJECTS / INTERMEDIATE: This course is designed for the self-motivated student with intermediate level skills to create projects of their own design, continue to expand skills and get practical advice from a professional metalsmith. Technical demonstrations will depend upon the needs of the students for their individual projects. CLASSIC CHAIN AND COLD-CONNECTIONS
Advanced Beginners and above - must be 18 years and older TUITION: $250 / LAB FEE: $70 In this class, students will learn to make several classic, unsoldered chain patterns, including Byzantine, Queen’s, single and double flower, and foxtail. Other patterns can be requested. The class will also offer students an opportunity to explore cold-connect techniques in jewelry making, including but not limited to rivets, tabs, alternative prong sets and wrapping. Beginning jewelry experience is helpful, but not required. Monday 1 to 4 p.m. September 10 through December 17 (14 weeks) Lisa Oristian Class limit: 15 AA106-4
MIXED MATERIALS JEWELRY
Advanced Beginners and above - must be 18 years and older TUITION: $250 / LAB FEE: $70 This class will explore ways to incorporate unusual or unexpected materials into metal jewelry. Examples are plastic, resin, epoxy, aluminum, wood, paper, fabric, leather, etc. Students are invited to bring in materials and found objects they would like to incorporate into their jewelry and class sessions will focus on design possibilities to make it work. This is a great opportunity for metals students to learn about cold connection, to explore ways to put color into their metal jewelry and to come up with ways to make their jewelry highly personal by incorporating personal artifacts into their work. PAINTING TECHNIQUES FOR BEGINNERS
Beginners - must be 18 years and older TUITION: $250 This course provides a structured program designed for beginning students. Projects focusing on composition and design, color mixing and essential painting techniques will be investigated. Acrylic paints are preferred. MULTI-LEVEL PAINTING (ACRYLIC AND OIL PAINT)
All levels – must be 18 years or older TUITION: $250 This is a hands-on class that explores painting through practical applications and experiences that relate line, form, texture, and color, while also investigating how these visual relationships relate to the artist’s intentions and the meaning of the work. LANDSCAPE PAINTING
All levels – must be 18 years or older TUITION: $250 This course will encourage students to work from various sources, including sketches, color studies and photographs in order to create landscape paintings. BLACK AND WHITE AND COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY
All levels - must be 18 years or older TUITION: $250 / LAB FEE: $90 This course is designed for students wishing to learn the art of traditional black and white or color photography. BEGINNING DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Beginners - must be 18 years or older TUITION: $250 LAB FEE: $70 This course is designed to help those wishing to advance their interest in the art of photography through the use of their digital camera, and the digital darkroom. All levels – must be 18 years or older TUITION: $250 / LAB FEE: $75 This course covers throwing and hand building techniques for beginners and experienced students. It will cover various throwing techniques, functional design and surface treatments. Advanced students may pursue projects of the own choosing with instructional guidance. MONOTYPE WORKSHOP
All Levels – must be 18 years or older TUITION: $130 / LAB FEE: $40 This workshop will be an in-depth exploration of monotype printmaking (one-of a kind prints) using a variety of water-based inks/paints. Student will create unique, “low-tech”, painterly prints in the school’s wellequipped, “ green” printmaking studio. An excellent class for painters! About the Saturday Morning Kids Programs
The School of Art Saturday morning children’s programs are designed to introduce youngsters to art through fun and educational projects in drawing, painting, clay and sculpture media that stimulate imagination and creative expression.
ARTBOX I & II
TUITION: $230 Youngsters attend art classes for the entire morning, 9 to 11:30 a.m., providing them ample time to work on creative projects and to experience several areas of art. It also means that parents get a full Saturday morning every week to pursue their own interests. Each ArtBox class is divided into two, seven-week sessions. One group meets with the drawing/painting instructors for the first seven weeks, while the other group attends the clay/sculptural media classes. At mid-semester, the groups exchange so that all students participate in each media. (Please supply your child with a snack each day). (ages 4 and 5)* *Students must be 4 by September 1, 2012 TUITION: $150 Student will learn the basics of art such as cutting, pasting, shapes and colors, in a safe comfortable environment. Activities will include collage, sculpture, painting and drawing. Due to the same lesson plan each session, children may only enroll in ONE session each semester. Students spend the semester with their classmates developing artistic abilities through creative instruction using various watermedia. PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT
For Grades 10, 11 and 12
TUITION: $250 LAB FEE: $75 This is a serious portfolio development course that will focus on building and improving drawing skills, an important criterion for art college admission. About the Dance Program
The School of Art provides a broad, community-based dance program with classes ranging from dance appreciation to a pre-professional curriculum. Classes for children, teens and adults are offered in ballet, jazz, tap and modern dance. A pre-ballet introduction to dance for younger students covers the basics of movement and music. Fundamentals of ballet and jazz give students the necessary foundation to begin pursuing more complicated and refined elements of dance. What to wear and other information on line at www.mwpai.org

Nutcracker Performances December 14, 15, 16 (NOTE: Annual Spring Concert 2013: NEW WEEK – May 28 – June 2, 2013) REFUND POLICY: •A full refund of tuition is granted only when the School of Art cancels a class or the Office of the Registrar receives formal notification, in writing, of withdrawal from a student prior to the first scheduled class meeting. •A 90% refund of tuition is granted when formal notification, in writing, is received prior to the second scheduled class meeting. A 60% refund of tuition is granted when formal notification, in writing is received prior to the third scheduled class meeting. If a student withdraws after the third scheduled class, no refund will be granted. •Class fees cannot be prorated for students choosing not to attend all class meetings. •If withdrawal is necessary, tuition cannot be applied to another semester. •Registration fees are not refundable. •Lab fees are not refundable after the 1st scheduled class. •This refund policy covers withdrawals for any reasons including injury, illness or family emergencies. Refunds take four weeks to process. Refunds are issued in the form of a check, which is mailed directly to the student’s home address. In case of credit card payment, refunds are applied directly to the credit card account.
