Concerts in the Court Hosts Tribute to Jazz Legend Saturday, April 21 • 7:30 p.m. Two-time Grammy-winning Turtle Island Quartet brings Bird’s Eye View: A Tribute to Charlie Parker to the Concerts in the Court series 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21, in the Edward Wales Root Sculpture Court. This high-flying program pays homage to the legendary brilliance of jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker. The genius of his improvisations almost single-handedly catapulted jazz from pop style into artistic expression, indelibly altering the musical landscape of America. Parker classics including KoKo, A Night In Tunisia, and Dewey Square are juxtaposed with original responses by quartet members, and intertwined with other thematic pieces from the bebop era and beyond including Sonny Rollins’ Airegin, Miles Ahead by Gil Evans/Miles Davis, and Subconscious-Lee by Lee Konitz. Grammy-nominated composer David Balakrishnan contributes his newly commissioned work, Aeroelasticity: Harmonies of Impermanence. Turtle Island draws its primary focus and musical identity from the individual creative voices of the ensemble who are at home in folk, pop, and jazz. It continues to recalibrate the foundational parameters of the traditional string quartet form, in a sense coming from the other direction.

Museum of Art Exhibitions Your Land, My Land: Immigrant Artists in the United States Cardamone Gallery On view through summer 2018

Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute Museum of Art is primarily a collection of art of the United States. With the exception of people indigenous to this continent, we are a nation of immigrants. Many “American” artists, such as Thomas Cole, were actually born in other countries. In the arts, as in other areas of life, persons who have come to the United States have been inspired by their new home. This gallery is dedicated to showcasing aspects of the collection that reflect the rich tradition of artists who traveled to the United States as children or adults, developed their talent, and shared it for the appreciation of all. Kenzo Okada, (American, 1902 –82), Coral No. 8, 1955, oil on canvas, 77 3/8 x 44 in., Museum purchase, 55.59

Time Waits for No One!

Time in Art on view through April 29 Time in Art showcases works from the Museum’s permanent collection that are not often on view, including delicate works on paper that can be damaged from excessive exposure to light. As we contemplate art and the passage of time, we might marvel that the etching in the exhibition by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italian, 1720-78), Branch of the Aqua Claudia, 1775, was conceived in Rome at the same time as the onset of the American Revolutionary War, and that this piece of paper has been protected and appreciated from the time the image was printed until now.

Do not delay! Time waits for no one, and Time in Art closes on April 29.

The Clock is Winding Down

Jewels of Time: Watches from the Proctor Collection on view through April 29 Jewels of Time: Watches from the Proctor Collection showcases 80 watches that were owned by MWPAI founders Thomas and Frederick Proctor. Dating from the 16th to the early 20th centuries, these are beautiful pieces that tell many stories, including the history of timekeeping in Europe and the United States, changing tastes in decoration and ornament, and the collecting habits of wealthy gentlemen during the Gilded Age. The exhibition is divided into sections to showcase different types of materials and forms, from the early oignon watch to those in the style of the Renaissance Revival. Enjoy this last opportunity to marvel at exquisite craftsmanship, precious jewels, and charming objects. Sponsored by Citizens Bank 4

Saturday, April 28, 12:55 p.m. The 2017-2018 season of The Met: Live in HD concludes with Verdi’s Luisa Miller 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14, and Massenet’s Cendrillon 12:55 p.m. Saturday, April 28 in the Sinnott Family – Bank of Utica Auditorium. Sonya Yoncheva sings the title role opposite Piotr Beczała in the first Met performances of the opera in more than 10 years. Bertrand de Billy conducts this heart-wrenching tragedy of fatherly love.

Luisa Miller Following a stunning production at the Royal Opera in 2011, Massenet’s Cendrillon, his sumptuous take on the Cinderella story, makes its Met debut with Joyce DiDonato recreating the starring role. She is paired with mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in the trouser role of Prince Charming, Kathleen Kim as the Fairy Godmother, and Stephanie Blythe as the imperious Madame de la Haltière. Once again, Bertrand de Billy conducts Laurent Pelly’s imaginative storybook production.

Museum. Recently, I worked with student activities to set up a private screening of the movie Loving Vincent for PrattMWP students. I’m also a part of the student life staff as a residence assistant.

Did you live there until you came to PrattMWP? I’ve lived in a small town outside Pittsburgh my whole life.

Is there anything you like to spend time on outside of school? When I’m not in school, I spend my time hanging out with friends, seeking out museums, or working at AMC Theatres.

Why did you decide to major in painting? Sidney Namey, self-portrait I’ve always had an interest in visual arts, but I wanted to go into a field where I’d have a prompt to create work. Through experience, I’ve found that I tend to work better when I’m given guidelines and deadlines. Which particular area of Communications Design are you interested in? I’m concentrating in illustration because I like a more painterly style and want to continue to practice traditional methods and media as well as digital design. What campus activities have you been part of at PrattMWP? Not many students know about it, but I love the free film series at the

When you have completed your BFA, do you plan to stay in the Brooklyn/NYC area? I’d like to stay close to New York City because of the opportunities for design jobs, but, being from a rural area, I eventually want to live somewhere with more open space and hopefully a few cows. Any special interests? As well as visual art, I’m into music and theatre. I participated in seven plays and musicals in high school and have played piano, saxophone, and flute for years.

in collaboration with other students. However, I have to admit that I’m not very involved in the clubs created at the beginning of the year.

Did you live there until you came to PrattMWP? After my birth, my parents moved to the west side of France, Nantes, which I considered as my hometown. Until I came to PrattMWP, I’ve never lived anywhere else than France.

Is there anything you like to spend time on outside of school? As probably everyone here, I enjoy spending the rest of my time, especially when I come back home, with my family and friends, because I miss them a lot. Otherwise outside of school, I like being able to work more on my personal projects that I couldn’t do during class.

Why did you decide to major in painting? Since I’ve known how to hold a brush, I have always painted; it’s my passion and I can’t see myself doing anything else… even for a living.

Nolween Carfantan

Which particular style of painting are you interested in? These days I’m very interested in the modern realism’s paintings that have been creat- Untitled 1 ed since the development of abstraction in modern art. What campus activities have you been part of at PrattMWP? Most of the events planned for the students and artistic projects

When you have completed your BFA, do you plan to stay in the Brooklyn/NYC area? When I graduate, everything will depend on if I am able to get a job in the USA or to enter into another school for my MFA, because otherwise, for visa reasons, I will have to go back in France, which doesn’t bother me; either way is fine with me. Any special interests? I think that, thanks to my parents, I have a huge interest in the cinema; especially movies based on true stories or documentaries about historical facts. It’s a bit strange as an interest, but this is often what I love watching by myself.

INCREASE YOUR IMPACT WITH MATCHING GIFTS Many companies double, or even triple, the donations their employees make to nonprofit organizations such as MWPAI. For example, when a donation of $50 is matched by a $50 donation from an employer, the donor is providing a total of $100 in support to MWPAI. This can include memberships or donations to the

annual fund or specific programs. For people who also volunteer their time to MWPAI, some employers will make a financial grant to MWPAI in recognition of the hours of service. Matching Gifts can be a benefit for both current employees and retirees, depending on the company.

Matching Gifts are an important source of support for MWPAI and our programs. To find out if your employer has a Matching Gift program, contact the human resources department at your company.

COMING SOON - MWPAI MEMBER VOICES We often hear such wonderful stories about the significant impact MWPAI has had on our community that we’d like to collect and share these accounts through the members’ Bulletin.
