n the early 20th century, Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. (1870-1957) and Thomas R. Proctor (1844-1920) led the way in the transformation of the Utica landscape, creating beautiful and naturalistic recreational spaces that provided escapes from the city and enhanced the quality of life for its inhabitants.

Through period imagery and contemporary art photographs, this exhibition will explore the development of the park system (concentrating on Roscoe Conkling and F. T. In the early twentieth century, the Proctor family and the Utica Improvement Board contacted the Olmsted Brothers Landscape Architecture firm to design green spaces in Utica. In this walking tour, Amanda Manahan and Katechen Cardamone discuss how Frederick T. Proctor Park, the “crown jewel” of the Utica parks, demonstrates a F.T. Proctor Park, 2013. balance of aesthetics, naturalism, Photograph: Richard Walker and functionality and how the landscape has evolved to reflect changes in society’s sense of aesthetics, function, and purpose. The tour will also highlight the continuing work of the Central New York Conservancy to restore and preserve this historic treasure.
At the heart of the story is the 1654 Dutch painting The Goldfinch by Carel Fabritius, and a 13 year old boy. Since its debut last fall, The Goldfinch received critical acclaim and fans of the author rushed to get their copies. The book release coinsided with a major exhibition of Dutch masterpieces (including the Fabritius painting) on view at the Frick Collection in New York City that drew record attandance. The book won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and was a contender for the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction.

Art Story: Every Picture Tells a Story An Early Learning Program for Ages 3 and up. August Hiatus! The Art Story program will be taking a break in August so staff can further explore and practice the Whole Book Approach (WBA) and Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) skills we use with this program to foster visual and verbal literacy. The WBA, developed by Megan Lambert at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, emphasizes reading with children rather than to them and looks at the entire book as a work of art. It encourages critical and creative thinking while carefully looking at the art in picture books. We also use VTS, which engages children with artwork in the galleries and in books by asking simple questions such as “What is happening in this picture?” “What do you see that makes you say that?” and ”What more can you find?” By employing these techniques while reading books and looking at art, children become an active part of the telling of the story and “reading” the art in the galleries. For more information on the WBA go to the Eric Carle Museum’s website, carlemuseum.org/downloads/Whole_Book_Approach.pdf
The tour will begin on the Parkway at the entrance to Sage Court. Park on Schoolcraft Rd. (north side of the Parkway opposite Sage Court)

After graduating from college Andrea taught English in a small Italian town, traveled throughout Italy and fell in love with the creativity and artistry of the people. By the early 90's Andrea was importing and distributing a wide range of Venetian Glass jewelry and gifts. After years of carefully selecting jewelry styles for her customers, Andrea started modifying some of the earrings and necklaces. She was responding to customers' requests for casual elegance, something unique yet versatile enough to be worn day and evening. She mixed Venetian Glass beads with sterling silver, freshwater pearls and other unique ornamentation to give jewelry a modern, updated look. Andrea loves the vivid colors of Venetian Glass and now surrounds herself with thousands of beads in her Pacific Grove Studio in California where she designs and makes jewelry. Andrea's jewelry is sold throughout the country in finer gift stores, galleries and museums. You will find her jewelry at some of the most prestigious museum gift shops in United States including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Baltimore Museum of Art. After years working in this field Andrea has found that jewelry transcends words, transcends borders, and speaks a common language of understanding to those who recognize and appreciate beauty. Please note the Gift Gallery as well as the rest of the Museum of Art is now open Friday nights until 8 p.m. Start your weekend fun at MWPAI.
