Museum of Art EXHIBITION

Call & Response: Collecting African American Art Representing: Figures or Abstraction? Artists create from their intellect, skill, and emotions—from their humanity—and express a point of view that is both personal and universal. Because the Call & Response artists are African American, their work reflects the experience of living as a Black person in the United States during the last 70 years. That makes for a shared experience but by no means a monolithic one. Artists use the elements of art—scale, color, texture, composition—to create something that is visually satisfying and serves their meaning. In Call & Response the results are as varied as the individuals; the artworks on view express joy, wonder, curiosity, or anger about topics as wide-ranging as atomic energy, nature, civil rights, everyday life, the representation of women, and history. During the Civil Rights era, Black artists sometimes felt pressured to express the African American experience in direct, representational ways. Throughout Call & Response, visitors will find imagery by artists such as William E. Smith, Kara Walker, or Carrie Mae Weems, whose artworks might encourage, uplift, or bear witness to injustice. Artists like Norman Lewis, however, have felt inspired by an abstract visual language, which they feel is more universal and unlimited by a specific time or place.

William E. Smith (American, 1913–97), Lamp Post, 1938, linoleum cut: ink on paper, 11 1/8 x 7 1/8 in., Museum purchase, 94.10

Norman Lewis (American, 1909–79), Echoes, 1950, ink on white wove paper, 19 x 24 1/8 in., Edward W. Root Bequest, 57.173
