School of Art Dancers Present Holiday Classic December 19 • 20 • 21

T

he Holiday classic, The Nutcracker be will brought to life by the School of Art dance program 7 p.m. Thursday, December 19 and Friday, December 20 and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, December 21 at Mohawk Valley Community College. Guest Artist Nik Allen returns to weave the magic of this favorite story ballet as Drosselmeier, a beloved uncle to Clara. Drosselmeier presents Clara with an odd but enchanting Nutcracker Doll at the family’s Christmas Eve Party. When the party ends, Clara falls asleep in front of the Christmas tree with the wooden Nutcracker cradled in her arms. In her vivid dreams Clara witnesses a battle between the Mouse King and her life-size Nutcracker and his soldiers. The Nutcracker escorts her through a swirling winter wonderland to the Land of the Sweets where all the confections dance for her delight.

MWPAI Dance Program is pleased to welcome new guest artists who will perform alongside our students: freelance dancers Andres Neira, originally from Cali, Colombia will appear as the Cavalier with the Sugar Plum Fairy and young professional; Jean-Pierre Lemire will appear as the Snow King. Welcome New Museum Education Coordinator

C

lare Fitzgerald has joined the MWPAI staff as the Museum Education Coordinator. Clare is working with the Museum Education Department team on advancing the docent program and developing the 21st Century school and public tour programs. Clare is a Utica native who received her B.A. in Fine Arts and Politics from New York University. In May of this year she completed her Ph.D. in Art History at Emory University in Atlanta. Clare is passionate and committed to working and teaching with objects, saying, "I believe in the role of the museum in society as a place of education and inclusion. I am interested in finding ways to make the museum and the objects it houses more accessible to a larger audience, and I appreciate MWPAI's ongoing commitment to this goal." With her curatorial experience at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum; and museum education experience at the Brooklyn Museum and the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University, we look forward to the practical and scholarly knowledge Clare brings, along with her energy and passion for museum work. She will help the Museum Education Department position the Museum as a focal point for community members and as a destination for visitors. Clare lives in New Hartford with her husband, Trent Brunson.
