Folk Rock Master Performs Special Concert in the Court in Association with Father’s Exhibition December 13 • 8 p.m.
C
oncerts in the Court presents the classic folk rock of the Jon Pousette-Dart Band 8 p.m. Saturday, December 13 in the Museum of Art Root Sculpture Court. This concert will coincide with the Museum of Art exhibition celebrating Jon’s father, Absence / Presence: Richard Pousette-Dart as Photographer on view through January 4. Jon Pousette-Dart has built his four-decade career with a gilded tenor and a smooth hand on the guitar. The Pousette-Dart Band was a 1970s radio mainstay, a favorite on the college circuit, and became one of the busiest touring groups in the US, playing arenas from coast to coast. His engaging melodies, catchy hooks and heartfelt ballads are optimistic and accessible. He's a confident and gracious performer with a well-earned diehard following, and new fans with each passing year. Tickets for this performance and all Concerts in the Court are $37.50 for members, $42.50 for general admission, and $22.50 for students. Flexible subscriptions are also available. The Museum opens at 7 p.m. so patrons may view the current exhibitions, socialize and visit the Museum Shop. Concerts in the Court also feature a cash bar and special gallery talks at intermission. For tickets contact the Performing Arts Ticket Office at 797-0055 or 800-754-0797. Tickets are also available online at www.mwpai.org.
Please Note: This concert was originally scheduled for November 15. There is no need to exchange tickets with the original date; they will be honored at the door. If you are unable to attend on December 13, please contact the Ticket Office for assistance. Concert and Exhibition Sponsored by Series Sponsored by

Her holiday cards have decorative paper layers, two- or three-dimensional diecuts, ribbons and bows for that very special person on your holiday list. Museum Engages Community through Innovative Program
T
his summer Museum Education Director April Oswald launched an innovative new program that has already received national attention. Ms. Oswald engaged adult refugees and immigrants taking English as a Second Language classes in the Utica City School District Adult Learning Center at the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees and invited them to take their Thursday morning classes at the Museum of Art. These classes are part of a program called Shared Traditions, which received support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Art Works and M&T Bank/Partners Trust Charitable Fund. Each class spent an hour in The Golden Age of European Painting exhibition discussing the three major themes of the program: adornment, ritual, and place. These themes were selected to collectively consider wide-ranging cultural experiences, i.e., those of 17th-and 18th- century Europe, and those of present-day immigrants and refugees from Sudan, Myanmar, Nepal, Belarus, and elsewhere.
In Company with Angels: Seven Rediscovered Tiffany Windows
Hour two of the program was led by photographer Sylvia de Swaan, who discussed her work and the work of other photographers. As a refugee herself, de Swaan fled Romania as a child during WWII. This experience, and her subsequent travel, homes, and return to her birthplace, is the subject of her work. Program participants were given cameras and photographic assignments with themes similar to those discussed in the meetings.

he Museum of Art was awarded $100,029 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Core Collections Digitization & Dissemination Project. The grant will fund the creation of 2,000 new digital images of artworks in the Museum’s permanent collection and make them available online as an educational resource reaching the widest possible audience. “We are delighted to be a recipient of this IMLS grant,” said Anna D’Ambrosio, Museum of Art Director. “It will enable the Museum to make our renowned collections more widely accessible and known. The images will be viewed internationally and used by art enthusiasts, classroom teachers, and researchers, among many others.” Educational texts will accompany the digital images, and the grant will also help to fund a new program that will make the images and text available to anyone with computer access. “Our grants are highly competitive. The Institute of Museum and Library Services enlists hundreds of library and museum professionals throughout the United States to review grant applications and make recommendations on projects most worthy of funding,” said IMLS Director Susan H. Hildreth. “Receiving a grant from IMLS is a significant achievement, and we congratulate Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute for being among the 2014 IMLS museum grantees.” IMLS museum grants support a wide variety of projects that create learning experiences, strengthen communities, care for collections and provide broad public access.

Take Advantage of Year-End Tax Benefits and Support MWPAI
S
ince our founding nearly 100 years ago, Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute serves as the cultural and artistic center of our community.
We have always depended upon the generous support of our community. From our founding families through generations of members, generous Annual Fund gifts have made a very real difference in what we have been able to present. Consider making a tax-deductable Annual Fund gift. It’s a tradition worth continuing. Consider also a generous contribution of $1,000 or more, and become a member of the Fountain Elms Society, a circle of supporters who receive a host of special privileges. Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of your contribution is knowing you help enable the breadth and quality of the Institute’s programming which is an investment in the quality of life of the entire region. The Fountain Elms Society, now in its fifth year, boasts more than 130 members. Our goal is to double that number over the next three years. If you are already a Fountain Elms Society member, please bring a friend when you attend upcoming events and encourage them to get involved by joining at one of our many membership levels December is the last opportunity to make gifts to MWPAI and enjoy a charitable tax deduction for 2014. Gifts to the Institute can be even more beneficial to the donor by making a gift of appreciated securities. Such a gift enables the donor to take a tax deduction for the full market value of the stock on the day it is transferred to the Institute therefore avoiding any capital gains tax on the appreciation of that stock. You can further benefit MWPAI by making your holiday purchases from Amazon through Amazon Smile. Go to smile.amazon.com and select a charity by typing Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute in the search box. Amazon donates 0.5% of the purchase price to MWPAI. For further information regarding the Fountain Elms Society or to find out more about giving tax-wise gifts of securities or planned-giving options, contact Tara Sumner at 315-797-0000, ext. 2297. To donate to the Annual Fund, or become a Member, contact Anastasia Cass at ext. 2104.
