Memory and Miniature: The Art of the Italian Presepe

During this presentation, artist Margot Balboni and medievalist Professor Sarah Stanbury share their unique perspectives on Italian presepe, a traditional form of religious installation art that depicts the Nativity. A collaboration between Balboni and Stanbury, the exhibition The Italian Presepe: Cultural Landscapes of the Soul evolved from their research and passionate pursuit of presepi on visits to Rome, Puglia, Basilicata, and Naples. A light reception follows. Balboni and Stanbury will sign copies of the exhibition catalogue, available for purchase at the Museum Shop.

Participated, but not pictured: Rocco Pepe and Bella Pepe.

Originally from a town near Calabria, Italy, and later Brooklyn, New York, the Papandrea family has created elaborate prescepi for four generations. As a boy, Joseph Papandrea recalls moving out of his bedroom each Christmas season so that the family could create an elaborate presepe that took up most of the room. When the Papandrea family moved to Utica in 1958, they brought the precepe tradition with them. Villagers, animals, angels, and the Holy Family populate a landscape that is made from scratch each year. The Papandreas have generously recreated a smaller version of their family presepe to share with our community this year. Enjoy this local presepe when you visit the exhibition The Italian Presepe: Culture Landscapes of the Soul, on view through January 10, 2016. Thank you to our exhibition sponsors NBT Bank and Charles A. Gaetano Construction Corp.

The exhibition originated at the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery, College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass., where it was generously supported by: the Dean’s Office; the Committee on Scholarship at the College of the Holy Cross; The McFarland Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture; and the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery.

Thank You for Your Support WPAI relies on and appreciates the generous and committed support of members, donors and corporate sponsors. As the year draws to a close, we offer heartfelt thanks to you for your role in ensuring that we fulfill our mission to advance the appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of the arts. This kind of generosity, which began with our founding families and has continued through generations of community donors, enables MWPAI to offer exhibitions, concerts, educational programs, art classes, and so much more.

M

The year has been filled with extraordinary highlights. We have been so pleased to share Monet to Matisse: The Age of French Impressionism, one of the most successful exhibitions in our history, with art lovers who have visited us from across the United States. Keyboard Conversations with Jeffrey Siegel continue to delight new and returning audiences while the Concerts in the Court provided an intimate setting for such outstanding performances as the Marcus Roberts Trio and the Hot Club of San Francisco. The School of Art has added many new courses to the Community Arts Education program and The PrattMWP College of Art and Design welcomed its largest freshman class in five years!

December is the ideal time to make a tax-deductible gift to MWPAI that is, in turn, a gift to your community. There are many ways to join the circle of support that improves the quality of life that MWPAI endeavors to provide.

• A gift to the Annual Fund provides ongoing support of all of our endeavors. • An annual gift of $1,000 or more entitles you to membership in the Fountain Elms Society, where you can enjoy many exclusive benefits.

• Gifts of appreciated securities enables donors to take a tax deduction for the full market value of the stock on the day it is transferred to the Institute, therefore avoiding any capital gains tax on the appreciation of that stock – gifts that are beneficial to both the donors and MWPAI. • Exhibitions, concerts and other special programs offer sponsorship opportunities for individuals or businesses at different levels.

• Charitable Gift Annuities provide immediate tax benefits to donors accompanied by fixed annuity payments for life at an attractive interest rate. • A gift that will satisfy your IRA Required Minimum Distribution for the end of the year without generating taxable income.

The coming year promises to build on our recent achievements. Selected Shorts will return for another popular evening of live storytelling. The Root Sculpture Court will be transformed by the installation of Terry Slade’s meditative and colorful suspended glass creation, Earth Mantra. Our special summer exhibition will feature the vibrant, worldly images of acclaimed National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry. The School of Art will welcome even more students in both Community Arts Education and to PrattMWP College of Art and Design. We truly appreciate your consideration of a gift at this time and offer sincere thanks for your role in making MWPAI a community asset, a community gem.

To make a tax-deductible contribution or to learn more about gifts of securities or other planned giving options, please contact Bob Mortis at bmortis@mwpai.org or 315-797-0000, extension 2129 or Audra Acey at aacey@mwpai.org or extension 2104.
