See It Now The World through His Lens: Steve McCurry Photographs on view through December 31 The landmark exhibition The World through His Lens: Steve McCurry Photographs, will be closing December 31. McCurry has traveled the globe, finding the sublime in the everyday— from war-torn regions of Afghanistan to the sacred sites of Cambodia and from children at play in Burma to the triumph of the human spirit after devastating monsoons in India. While international in scope, the photographs in the Museum’s exhibition have been uniquely selected with the Mohawk Valley’s immigrant and refugee communities in mind. Stunning images of Thailand, Burma-Myanmar, Nepal, Afghanistan, Russia, India, and others resonate with our region. The evocative images in The World through His Lens reveal universal human struggles and explore diverse societies across the boundaries of language and culture. Portraits of Hope: Faces of Refugee Resettlement also closes December 31. These amazing images by local photographer Lynne Browne depict survivors of war, genocide, and political strife who came to the U.S. and settled in the Utica region after living in refugee camps in Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. The exhibition celebrates diversity, and confronts stereotpyes about resettlement, and explores the challenges and aspirations of local refugees starting over in a new land. Museum of Art EASTON PRIBBLE ARTWORK FOR SALE Original art is the perfect holiday gift. The Caldwell Gallery Hudson has for sale a selection of artworks by regional artist Easton Pribble (1917-2003), the former beloved MWPAI School of Art instructor. Pribble left the paintings and drawings in his estate to the Institute to be sold to benefit the Museum of Art acquisition fund and a scholarship in his name at PrattMWP College of Art and Design. After launching a successful career in New York, exhibiting at prestigious galleries such as The Pinacotheca and The Charles Alan Gallery in the 1950s, Pribble moved to Central New York in 1957 to teach painting and drawing at the MWPAI School of Art. His teaching career would span more than four decades. Pribble simultaneously maintained an active studio practice, employing Modernist stylistic methods to render landscape, architecture and still life, and he never stopped working to reconcile the concerns he held as an artist. “My work has been eclectic
because I love the contradictions in the world around me, and the richness of those experiences,” Pribble said. Dynamic regional scenes and colorful landscapes and cityscapes are available at the Gallery. Newly rediscovered works have been added to the inventory. To see a complete listing of available works, visit www.caldwellgalleryhudson.com.

Development REQUIRED MINIMUM DISTRIBUTIONS While establishing a retirement account is a smart way to save for the future, the Internal Revenue Service does not allow people to keep retirement funds in these accounts indefinitely. You generally have to start taking withdrawals from your IRA, SIMPLE IRA, SEP IRA, or retirement plan account when you reach age 70.5. However, Roth IRAs do not require withdrawals until after the death of the owner. The required minimum distribution (RMD) for any year is the account balance as of the end of the immediately preceding calendar year divided by a distribution period from the IRS’s “Uniform Lifetime Table.” These tables and a worksheet to help you determine your required amount
are available at www.irs.gov or from your personal tax professional. These withdrawals from your IRA will be included in your taxable income except for any part that was taxed before or that can be received tax-free (such as qualified distributions from designated Roth accounts). However, a donation to the Institute can count as your required minimum distribution without increasing your adjusted gross income. The donation needs to be transferred directly from the IRA to the Institute in order to be tax-free. If you withdraw it from the IRA first and then make your gift, you can deduct the gift as a charitable contribution, but the withdrawal will still be included in your adjusted
gross income. Please consult with your IRA administrator to explore the options they offer to facilitate a direct transfer. Your gift to the Institute can be designated to support any of the many programs offered each year, such as sponsoring a concert or exhibition, establishing or adding to a scholarship, or as an unrestricted gift to our Annual Fund to support the entire operation. To notify the Institute of a gift that satisfies your required minimum distribution or to learn more about sponsorships and scholarships, please contact Bob Mortis at bmortis@mwpai.org or 315-797-0000, ext. 2129. The information offered is not intended to be legal advice. For legal advice, please consult an attorney or other estate planning professional.
